“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted” ~ Aesop Thank You and Best Wishes Irene Powell! LAVA volunteers and the BESC staff gathered for a Hawaiian- themed party on Thursday, August 6, to fondly wish Irene all the best in her retirement. The ukulele group surprised Irene and per-formed a number of familiar songs, including “Goodnight Irene” (with personalized lyrics) – they sounded amazing! Irene has generously offered to continue as a volunteer, so it’s not goodbye, but instead it’s “see you soon Irene”! See Irene’s thank you displayed at both sign-in locations at BESC and at WRSC. Quilter’s Group Trip to Santa Fe and Albuquerque On July 22, members of the Quilter’s group traveled to Santa Fe and Albuquerque to donate quilts to the Youth Shelter and the Ronald McDonald House. The quilts are given to residents at the Youth Shelter and provide a wonderful homemade personal touch. Upon their arrival at the Ronald McDonald House, families are given a quilt as a gift. Both organizations expressed their deep gratitude to the quilters. LAVA would like to give special thanks to Dick Tatro for driving the quilters to Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The LAVA Quilter’s group meets every Wednes-day morning at the BESC, beginning at 8:30 a.m. HELP Drivers Ice Cream Social The HELP Drivers ice cream social at the BESC on July 27, proved to be a wonderful opportunity for some of the HELP drivers to get to know one another a bit and to meet Nan Phillips, the HELP coordinator. HELP drivers are volunteers who provide transportation to those needing a ride to Es-panola, Santa Fe or Albuquerque for medical appointments. If you are interested in becoming a HELP driver, or substituting from time to time for Nan, please contact Linda at 662-8923. BESC Reception Volunteer We are in need of a volunteer for reception at BESC on Tuesdays from 2:30 – 4:30. If you are able to help, please contact the LAVA office or stop by – we would love to see you! Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Volunteers Needed Saturday, September 12, is the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Los Alamos. Three volunteers are needed to sell raffle tickets and 6 volunteers are needed for traffic control. Please call Linda at 662-8923, or e-mail at [email protected] if you can help. County Fair and Triathlon Thank you to all of the LAVA volunteers who helped to oversee the exhibits at the Mesa Public Li-brary for the Los Alamos County Fair on August 7 and 8, and to the volunteers who helped with the Los Alamos Triathlon on August 15 – your help is greatly appreciated! Thank you all so much for the generous gift of your time!! - Linda

Tinkle of Ukuleles Returns in September! Have you ever wondered if you could play a simple musical instrument, but never had the chance? BESC continues to offer a unique opportunity for our senior community to explore and develop potential musical skills via this newly-popular old-timey instrument—the Hawaiian ukulele. Beginning Friday, September 25, instructors Kathleen Galbraith and Fran Chris-tiansen from the String Along Ukulele Band in Chama, will conduct 45-minute basic ukulele lessons for eight weeks. Class locations are in the BESC building, with sessions beginning promptly at 9:30 a.m. Following the basic class for beginners, and begin-ning at 10:30 a.m., a 45-minute “sing-and-strum session” is designed for students continuing from prior semesters. Prior musical experience is not necessary, and lesson materials provided are designed for serious beginners who have time in their personal schedule to practice for a minimum of 15 minutes per day between class sessions. Practice instruments are on loan from The Friends of Heron and El Vado Lakes State Parks. Students may check out these instruments for the duration of the class. Good quality budget ukulele packages will also be available for purchase from the instructors. In order to ensure that personal attention can be given to each student, the class size will be limited to ten pre-registered beginners. A materials and travel reimbursement fee of $40 will be collected at the beginning of the second class meeting. Ruth Lier is the local coordinator for this class and will provide further information and handle pre-registration. She can be reached at 505-662-7114, or [email protected]. Hope to see you there!
