37th annual SAC. JAZZ FESTIVAL & JUBILEE

    May 28–31, 2010 – Memorial Day Wknd.

Wow, the Sacramento Jazz Festi-val & Jubilee is almost here! The office is filled with excitement, activity, and yes, even a bit of stress. It’s all for the good, though, as this year’s event has some exciting changes in store.

Let me take a moment to thank some key businesses helping to make this year’s Festival & Jubilee a success. First, thanks to our longtime sponsor, The Golden 1 Credit Union. Local and national businesses in our market have had to make incredibly tough finan-cial decisions in the past few years; our sponsors are no exception. We’re thrilled The Golden 1 is back as a spon-sor for our Festival & Jubilee in 2010. You’ll see the familiar Golden 1 ATM on location, again, in Old Sacramento. If you see someone from The Golden 1, be sure to thank them. Better yet, stop by one of their convenient locations and open up an account. Say hello to our newest sponsor, Drexel University. Their sponsorship adds a compelling new element: Drexel University’s Jazz Master Class, a lec-ture series about the significance of jazz music, dance, and related styles. Drexel University is located immediately adja-

cent to Old Sacramento, footsteps from several Festival stages. Check this year’s Festival & Jubilee program for exact times to catch the Jazz Master Class Series, held on location at the University. The Jazz Master Class Series will cover a wide variety of topics including rag-time, contemporary jazz, swing dancing, blues, and the culture and music of New Orleans. We’re proud that some of the most sought-after experts in their fields have offered to speak at the series.

The NorCal Ace Retailer Group, your friends at your local Ace Dealer, are helping the Jazz Festival & Jubilee in a big way: they’re selling tickets for us at their stores during the few weeks leading up to the Festival & Jubilee. When you’re in their stores, let them know we appreciate the support!

Try your luck at the California Lot-tery trailer. Lottery folks are on location, again, in Old Sacramento. Thanks to the Lottery for their on-going support.

Need a new car? Then check out another new sponsor: the Northern California Ford Dealers will be dis-playing a few of their newest vehicles

President’s Messageby Jim Roberson STJS . PRESIDENT

Holy Cow! The 37th annual Sacramento Jazz Festival and Jubilee is this month, and our staff and volunteers have been working like crazy to make it fabulous. It is time for all of our jazz friends who don’t yet have their tickets to buy their tickets. It is so much nicer when you buy your tickets ahead of the festival (skip the lines), and it really helps our jazz society with the old cash flow. With our great website, it’s so easy to learn all about the festival and buy your tickets right from the website at www.sacjazz.com/. Or if you prefer, you can call the jazz office and be well taken care of by our thoughtful staff and volunteers: (916) 372-5277, ext. 19. The website shows the music schedule for the weekend, so you can plan ahead. This will be one of our best festivals ever, and you all really need to be there or you will miss all the fun…I am serious!

Tickets are also on sale for our Thursday Night Kickoff Party at Freeway Gardens featuring two bands that are hand-picked for the occasion. Buy tickets online, at the Office or at the door. Details are on the Festival website: www.sacjazz.com/

Bob Williams wrote eloquently two years ago about all the good things jazz music does for us, including helping us live longer. Last month, Yvonne and I were in Palm Springs visit-ing musician friends and had the privilege of meeting the great vocalist Herb Jeffries. Herb sang with Earl “Fatha” Hines before he became a movie star and joined Duke Ellington’s orchestra in the 40s and became the band’s best known vocal-ist. He recorded “Flamingo,” which sold 50 million copies—and that was when 50 million was a lot—and is closely asso-ciated with the Duke Ellington hit “Satin Doll.” Herb is 96 years old, sharp as a tack, still performing, and still has that wonderful, deep-singing voice we all remember. More jazz music please! The dancers are “picking ‘em up and settin’ ‘em down,” and the crowds are showing their pleasure at Jazz Sunday. In March, we finally got the dance floor in the right place to prop-erly accommodate our dancers and our other jazz aficionados, and we received some nice letters telling us how much you like the new setup. Thanks for your patience while we figured out what to do. Credit goes to Charlie Gehlbach, Judy Hen-dricks and our Music Committee and Sound Crew.

Coming up on May 9th…Jazz Sunday…renowned So. Cal. boogie-woogie pianist Carl Sonny Leyland—really a fun performer! Why would you want to be anywhere else? 2

pattern, Leyland was inspired to go to the piano and begin trav-eling on a path that would become his life’s purpose. Within 3 months, he would be performing in public, and shortly after would become a member of a respected local group, the Bob Pearce Blues Band.

Initially influenced by boogie-woogie greats Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade “Lux” Lewis, Leyland went on to fully explore the piano blues genre, becoming an authority on early and obscure styles such as those played by Cow Cow Davenport, Little Brother Montgomery, Montana Taylor and Speckled Red (to name a few).

In 1988, Leyland had the opportunity to come to the USA. This initial visit to New Orleans inspired him to relocate to that city where he would spend the next nine years. During that time, he was active on the club scene, quickly gaining a reputa-tion for his authentic blues and early rock & roll stylings. Also, he toured with the Dallas-based band Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, whose line up included blues great Sam Myers.

In 1997, feeling the need for a change, Leyland relocated to Southern California. He joined Big Sandy & His Flyrite Boys (the well-known rockabilly and Western swing group), and toured with them for over three years.

By this time, his repertoire had expanded to include ragtime and early jazz styles, which enabled him to become part of the traditional jazz scene around Los Angeles and San Diego. In June of 2003, the Carl Sonny Leyland Trio was formed with drummer Hal Smith and bassist Marty Eggers. There was such a natural synergy between the three musicians that a recording of their first performance was good enough to issue on a CD (Broadway Boogie — now out of print). Their versatile combi-nation has proven successful over the years and delighted many large crowds. They have recorded six CDs to date (including a collaboration with Nathan James and Ben Hernandez) and continue to work steadily on the festival scene.

Leyland has also continued his involvement with the rocka-billy scene, and plays each year in the backing band at Viva Las Vegas (and more recently at the Rockabilly Rave USA). In this capacity, he has worked with such notables as Janis Martin, Ruth Brown, Billy Lee Riley and Carl Mann.

Whether playing solo or with his trio, Leyland’s playing dis-plays an infectious spontaneity, providing plenty of surprises for the listener. While he possesses the necessary vocabulary to pay tribute to the greats of old, he refuses to limit himself to this, and prefers to let each performance be an opportunity to say something new. We’ll be listening! 2

Mark your calendars for the Thursday Night Kickoff Party featuring two bands you won’t be able to see at the Festival: The California Honeydrops from San Francisco start the show with their infectious brand of jazz, blues and swing, fol-lowed by Aftershock, a local band whose high-energy music is sure to keep the party going. Great food, drinks and music—a truly wonderful evening to launch this year’s Festival & Jubi-lee. Tickets are $20, available at the door, on-line, or by calling the office: 916.372.5277.

Thanks to you, too. Without the help and support of our faithful members, great volunteers and wonderful sponsors, there would be no Festival & Jubilee. Thanks to all! 2

Election for STJS Board of Directors

The STJS election will take place on Sun., June 13, 2010. The fol-lowing nominees have each agreed to serve on the STJS Board of Direc-tors. Each would serve for two years. This involves a significant investment of time and energy for each elected member. The Elec-tion Committee believes this is a very strong slate of nominees, and any one of them would make a strong and conscientious Board Member. Placement of the following musician and non-musician candidates was determined by random drawing.

for STJS Non-musician Board Member — Vote for 3

  • 8 May 2010

We’re going to be quick like a bunny this month (or like a Cricket—it’s just a matter of scale). Need to make room for Candidate Statements so you have good info to support your voting choices for the STJS Elections on June 13.

We had two—count ‘em—two BIG bands on Sunday, and THAT was a matter of scale, too! We started the day with Feli-cia Greenwood’s students, the Syncopating Sea-Monkeys from River City HS in West Sac.; approximately 15 of them. (They didn’t sit still long enough to be counted, trading-off on various numbers). They received a warm welcome and had lots of dancers for their upbeat set. The second large group was the Ron Cunha Big Band, 17 mem-bers strong. Yes, they WERE all on stage at one time, but it took a shoe horn and acrobatics to manage that. Well worth it, though. They got a super response from the audience, especially with Guest Artist John Sheridan sitting-in on piano. (He loved it!)

That made three straight sets for the fabulous Mr. Sheridan. We weren’t surprised that he was willing to work that hard for us, and we weren’t surprised by the marvelous outcomes of those

three sets, but we certainly were grateful for same! Make a place in your Jazz Fest schedule (now posted online at the sacjazz.com website) to hear John with jazz legend Bob Wilber performing with the Arbors “Statesmen of Jazz.” Also, thanks to all three of his backup bands (listed on page 13).

The Main Stage had only four sets for the day because of the mechanics of getting two big bands on and off stage, but the Gold Card room had a full five. Thanks to GCR Chief Paula Dula, the room had a spring theme: yellow sign, lavender mums and vanilla Tootsie Rolls...and good crowds all day.

In spite of competition from Banjo-Rama, Three Rivers’ JazzAffair, the Masters on TV (and the incessant, pounding rain), we had a pretty good crowd. They certainly enjoyed themselves, especially Marty and Shirley—two days before her 78th birth-day; they danced and danced.

Speaking of Banjo-Rama, it was the 44th (and 50th anniver-sary of their sponsor, Sacramento Banjo Band). Our own Ned Poffinbarger was honored as one of the trio who “created” the Banjo-Rama all those years ago. Thanks to Gordon Machado for the copy of the handsome printed program.

Joy Skalbeck tells us that big congratulations are due to Member-ship Honcho Felix Smith, who is being honored at the National Meet-ing of the American Rivers Association in Utah some time in May.

Tailgate’s first set was particularly exciting. Trombonist Ian Ellis showed up at about 10:30 to be sure he got signed in, and then several members of the J St. Jazz Cats—Andrew Stephens, Scott Yamamoto, Evan Hamaguchi, Bryce Korte and Drew Thomsen—joined him for an exhilarating YOUNG set. When teenagers show up early because they really want to play OKOM, you gotta think we are doing something right.

Nolan Cyr was back with the Cyr Crew: parents Brian & Cherish, sister Shayla, and grandparents Christine & Doug Cyr. Maggie Hull introduced us to her granddaughter, Katie Guzman, and to Charlie Hull’s daughter, Sandra Shields (Katie’s mother). [See Maggie’s big smile in a photo, below.]

Bob Himebauch (Jubilee Grunt and STJS Sound Crew vol-unteer) was on hand just one month after congestive heart failure landed him in the hospital. Not allowed to string speaker cable, he folded all the printed programs, one of many small volunteer jobs that add up to a great Jazz Sunday. (Mark Kramer does the program’s graphic design.) Thank you all!

Not such good news from Bill Au. He is home after open-heart surgery to repair a valve. Glad that he seems to be recovering, though. He had to feel good to learn that son Gordon Au will be playing with Wycliffe Gordon and the Louis Armstrong Cen-tennial Band at Birdland in New York later this month. He also

played with Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks at Birdland earlier this month. Continued good reports from Roger Krum. He’s making progress after a really scary interval.

Benny Marcello identified Natalie Beleno as his “lady friend.” Benny contributed to a couple of hot sets in the TG and GC Rooms. Susan Phillips did the same. She said she’s retiring after 27 years with the State Housing and Community Develop-ment Dept. Maybe we’ll see her more often now.

Guy & Margie Weybright must have a conduit direct to the Funny T-Shirt Shop (as compared to Edd Burhans’ Jazzy T-Shirt Shop); Margie’s shirt o’ the day had a bird outline, and the legend “Raven Lunatic” (chuckle). Speaking of funny... Ira Greenstein watched the Set-Up Crew (same as the Sound Crew) scuttling around putting up “No Entry,”“No Exit,”“Use Other Door” signs and suggested we put one on the Men’s Room door. (Oh, puhleeeeze, Ira. How juvenile!)

Also funny (but too long to repeat here), ask Bob Newman about the night he and his friend, Locke Turner, sat-in with the Count Basie Band!

“Hie thee” to your friendly neighborhood bookseller for Get-ting the Pretty Back: Friendship, Family, and Finding the Per-fect Lipstick by Molly Ringwald, described as part memoir and part style-guide. Get your copy early, and plan (cont. on page 11)

on being in the crowd for her two concerts at Jubilee (Saturday at the Hyatt Ballroom, 4:00pm and 8:30pm).

Speaking of people in the news... According to the SacBee’s Bob Shallit, our own Steve Hammond (Head Honcho at the Sac-ramento Convention and Visitors Bureau, Jubilee Emperor Emeri-tus, and Ex-Officio Member of the STJS Board) went BALD—but in the best possible way: deVere’s Irish Pub in Midtown Sacra-mento organized the St. Baldrick’s Foundation “Shaving the Day” event, a fundraiser for childhood cancer research. Steve and his teammate, Michael Ault from the Downtown Sac. Partnership, were 2nd Place finishers in fundraising and are now proudly bald. I’ll stifle my amusement in favor of admiration when I see him.

Congratulations to Cheri Murphy for presenting her 104th Student Performance at the Red Lion Hotel recently. Cheri & Jerry began these free performances 28 years ago, introducing us to some fine vocalists backed by some of Sacramento’s finest musicians. One of her students this year will be auditioning for the Sacramento Opera Company in May.

I’ll see YOU at next Jazz Sunday with Sonny Leyland. (He’ll also be at Mather Field Straw Hat on May 5 (full sched-ule on page 11.) You can’t beat JB’s Lounge at the Red Lion on Sunday nights thanks to Vivian Lee and Glenn Hair (about 7 years now). For the Midtown Stomp schedule, call 221.1500 (or visit midtownstomp.com). And mark your calendars now for Morten Gunnar Larsen and the Ophelia Orch. on June 11 (see ad, pg.5); that’s a world-class orchestra in a gorgeous old building with great acoustics. Most importantly... the SAC. JAZZ FEST. & JUBILEE is HERE (almost). Over 70 bands at 24 venues over a four-day period, all for $110. Where else can you get so much live music with one badge? Enjoy!

I t was another wonderful Jazz Sunday, and you fantastic people brought in $331 for our kids. A huge thank you to all. Our incredible donors were: Bill Schoening (past Jubilee but-tons for a parasol) Carl Warmdahl, Bill Reiff, Tom & Paige Morrow, Mike Schneider, Jean Angel, Marty Mahoney, Bar-bara Davis, Elinor Hackett, Eureka-Redmond Jazz Fest.

Our lucky winners: Logan Rodgers (parasol), Jean Warner, Jean Slayton, Barbara Davis, Shirley Hofheinz, Marty Mahoney, Azaria McCualy, Guy Weybright, and Peter Kurtz.

Okay ladies, get those flapper dresses out for next Jazz Sun-day’s pre-pre Jazz Jubilee Party. See you all there, and remem-ber to keep on jazzin’! 2

Who is the longest-standing, non-musician member at STJS? Jim Roach is that person. Jim is a Charter Member of the New Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. He was there at the Orangevale Grange Hall on May 5, 1968 when a handful of traditional jazz lovers got together for the first time to play and listen to trad jazz. As a trad jazz fan, Jim says it was a fun time. It was very informal; refreshments were mostly potluck in the early days.

Jim was also involved with the Sacramento New Orleans Hot Jazz Society, called the Little Jazz Club (1972 to Dec. 1980), which was devoted to “moldy fig” type trad jazz fans and musicians.

Jim has been involved with many aspects of STJS and the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee. He served on the STJS Board of Directors in the mid 1970s. He was involved with record inven-tory and distribution when STJS sold records—records?—later tapes and CDs. He was with Jazz Express for a couple of years and later with the Membership Committee for another couple of years. During the past 12 to 15 years, Jim has been at the Admissions Table for the STJS Jazz Sunday concerts at the Dante Club.

If you have a traditional jazz question or just want to know some traditional jazz trivia, just ask Jim. He will load you down with more trad jazz trivia than you may want to hear, plus an old joke or two.

Jim Roach, congratulations on being the longest non-musi-cian jazz fan and member of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. You are one of a kind! 2
