By Keith Ansell September 20 & 21, 2014 Join us on this weekend trip with lots of great cars, good people, fun tours, lots of fun and some great food. Saturday is a car show ($10 entry) in Detroit Lake with a fun evening around a campfire (weather permitting) or at the restaurant. Sunday will be a new tour back to the Port- land area that takes in many mountain roads, a lunch break and finishing about 5 PM in Oregon City. Last year a group of 11 cars travelled to Detroit Lake for a wonderful weekend of car people, a fun drive, good food and a fun evening! We're planning on doing it again this year and hope many more will join us. We will do the same run on Saturday morning as we need to get to Detroit Lake by 10 AM, leaving Oregon City at 8 AM. The route is the same as last year but the “fun” will be different (NOTE: The Harouns will start with a penalty of 9,926 points as they won just too much last year!). The City closes down about two blocks at the center of town (Almost the whole town!) on Saturday for the show. Cars, trucks, tractors and motorcycles are parked on both sides of the street. The city has a raffle and many great gifts for the entrants. Most of the sports car people eat at the Steel Wheel Room at the south end of the show area. This restaurant has a motorcycle theme with many artefacts on display. They gave us this room last year and say they'll do it again. A wonderful prime rib dinner is available on Satur- day evening for a very reasonable cost and was yummy. We'll have room on Saturday night's dinner for about 30 people. There are two hotels in the town with rooms from $60 to $270! The Lodge is right on the main street through the town, right were the show is! Membership The Columbia Gorge MG Club was formed for and is

active in the promotion and driving enjoyment of MGs. All MG enthusiasts are welcome to join and share infor-mation and fun. The Columbia Gorge MG Club is affili-ated with the North American MGA Register, and the North American MGB Register. Membership dues are $25 per year, $12.50 after July 1st. See the Vice President.

Chad’s Cheesy Chatter By Chad Cansler

Dominic Daly has resigned as President of Columbia Gorge MG Club, effective July 27. He feels that he did not have the support of the club membership in a number of situations. Our Bylaws state that the Vice President shall serve when the President cannot. I have agreed to take this responsibility for the re-mainder of Dominic’s term. The closing statement in Dominic’s res-ignation email was “you get what you deserve.”

It is my goal in the next 5 months to be ‘what you de-serve’. I recognize all too well that a business owner has a very fine line to walk. There is no room in the club for even the appearance of bias toward one business or another. In my heart I’m just a stubborn mid-Western guy and refuse to take part in the power struggle that is putting people at odds and causing disengagement in club activities and meetings. I feel that I can keep my business and leadership of the club separate, and focus on the purpose of the club – to have fun with quirky cars from Abingdon England!

Back in Oshkosh Wisconsin the Fox Cities British Car Club was able to buy a building so members could work/maintain/store the cars and have social functions as well. I’ve heard the Hawaii club has different members host tech days at their non-business home addresses. All these things

would create more unity and get members more actively engaged with their car ownership. You could say we are

spoiled to have so many specialized shops that work on these cars. Back in the Midwest you were on your own and it forced people to work together for a common goal; keeping your car run-ning! All I care about is British cars, MG’s in specific and the joy that people experi-ence while driving them. I want to en-courage members to come back to ac-tivities to feel that joy once again. I want to encourage members to come back to Club meetings and enjoy talk-

ing about our adventures driving our cars. I want sunny days and good roads ahead.

My goal in the last few months of this year is to get the new updated bylaws passed. Then this club can function more smoothly and emphasize that Board members should just be there to carry out the wishes of the membership, no personal agenda nonsense. . Gene Nunn and our bylaw committee worked really hard to help this club deal with the multitude of issues we have come across the past few years. You will hear more about this at the September meeting. I look forward to completing what has been set in motion and then turning it over to NEW, ENTHUSIASTIC Board Members for 2015.

Gorge Tour Recap By Peggy Oliver

AWESOME DAY!!! Tops down, sun in our faces and wind in our hair.

Fifteen cars collected at the 122nd K-Mart parking lot-we had a multi-selection crowd. Ron & Tom in a Black Miata, Jeff and Annette in a Charcoal Miata, Peggy and Jim in a White Miata. Mike and Judy drove their White 1956 TR3, Barry and Beth were in their red MGB. David and daughter Grace drove their Black TR3, Tom and Estelle were in their BRG MGB and continued on page 5

This happened to an Englishman in France who was totally drunk.

The French policeman stops his car and asks the gen-tleman if he has been drinking. With great difficulty, the Englishman admits that he has been drinking all day, that his daughter got married in the morning to a French man, and that he drank champagne and a few bottles of wine at the reception and a quite few glasses of single malt there-after.

Quite upset, the policeman proceeds to alcotest (breath test) him and asks the Englishman if he knows under French Law why he is going to be arrested.

The Englishman answers with humour: "No sir, I do not! But while we're asking questions, do you know that this is a British car and my wife is driving... on the other side!!

Christmas Party Raffle By Sue Stose

This year the raffle will be a little different. Sue Stose and Becky Hanenkrat will be organizing the raffle. The club will purchase a few items with the raffle money we have collected this year, plus we are going to go to some businesses and see if we can get some gift certificates do-nated. If you know of any business that we might be able to contact to get a donation from please let us know. Also if anyone would like to put together a basket to donate, or if you have a vacation home, or tickets to a show, etc. The raffle will be smaller this year, but we are looking for qual-ity items. Please contact Sue Stose at [email protected] or call 360-601-7002, Becky Hanenkrat at [email protected] or call 360-260-4509.

Gorge Tour Recap from page 3 Sondra and John were in their BRG MGB. Taunya and Bob in their red Spritgette, Margaret and Dominic in their or-ange Austin panel van with Marianne and Ed following sweep in their white MGB GT.

We all headed East up the gorge with view spots along the way. We traveled over the Bridge of the Gods with some of us "paying if forward at the toll booth" THANK YOU!! Just before we turned for Carson, Tom and Estelle were having engine problems so John, Sondra, Ed, Marianne stayed behind to review the problem. After ex-changing the distributor cap, Tom and Estelle and John and Sondra headed back home.

The rest of us continued on our adventure-up and over hills, down into canyons, along rushing waters and some viewpoints that were breath taking. For lunch a delicious feast enjoyed by all at a Mexican restaurant with food, beer, margarita's in Goldendale, Washington.

Afterwards we headed back down the hills and over the Hood River bridge (again some paying it forward) to enjoy a beer at a local brew pub.

After a terrific hot, sunny day we were all tired and headed home. What a ride!! Thank you Ron and Tom from all of us!

Clinic—September 17: Ignition, Distributors, Coils, and other Shocking Stuff

Gas by itself won’t get you running; you need proper ignition. This evening, we will start with how the ignition works. We will cover the timing, the distributor, coil, points, condenser, and the wiring involved. Stock/original equipment has worked for about 90 years and will do the job when properly working. We’ll cover how to set up and replace the points and how to time your engine.

We will look at the many improvements in the equip-ment for the iginition system. After we examine how the distributor works, we’ll get out some new parts that will improve performance and miles per gallon. Always the Wednesday after the Club Meeting

Bylaws Committee Report By Gene Nunn

The Bylaws committee has very nearly completed its work. Most of changes bring the bylaws into alignment with the way the club currently does business. In addition there are a couple of things that will make the club work more smoothly going forward.

The changes will be described in next month's An-nouncer and will be presented at the October membership meeting. The vote to approve them will be held at the No-vember Membership meeting.

The complete set of changes will be available to mem-bers after next month's Announcer article. Both the Com-mittee and the Board think you will agree with the changes and recommend your approval.

It’s About Branding By Glen Enright

My vote goes to none of the logos as they stand. They are all professionally done and in and of themselves well drawn, with some exceptions to legibility of name. The reason I cannot vote for any is because they are generic. They could be any MG club, anywhere in the world, but they do not say Columbia Gorge MG Cub, except in words.

This is a branding issue and I think more time is needed to have the artist re-think the design that reflects more closely the heart of the Columbia Gorge and Oregon.
