Gifts and Talents St. David’s will be launching a program in Gifts and Talents beginning this fall. The goal is to teach spiritual disciplines that will enable individuals to clearly discover and embrace their passions and character traits, and then match those with some of the particular Christian spiritual gifts presented in the New Testament. NURSERY HELP NEEDED!

Greet ings from EpiscoTOTS!

A few of our adult nursery volunteers are stepping down from their faithful service in the infant and toddler rooms, so we find ourselves in need of 3 new adult caregivers to serve in those rooms once a month beginning this Fall. We need volunteers during the 9:00 a.m. service, during the Sunday School hour, and during the 11:15 a.m. service. We have many ―lead‖ caregivers in these rooms with several years of service who are pros at training new volunteers and nurturing these little ones! This ministry is a wonderful way to share Christ’s love with our littlest St. Davidians, and to offer their parents an opportunity to worship in peace. Please contact Sarah McVay, Ass’t to the Rector for Infant and Toddler Care, at [email protected] or at 770-993-1094 x123 if you would like to be added to the nursery rotation schedule.

MINISTRY FOR WILLS

September, 2015 Dear Parents of Young Children, Do you have a will? If your answer is yes, how long has it been since it was reviewed and updated? You are the one to provide for your family’s financial stability in the event of your death. What if you die without a will and you are survived by minor children? Harsh results, great stress, and financial loss often develop as a result of failing to prepare for your death with a thoughtfully considered will. In my 50 years of law practice, I have seen minor children placed with ill-equipped guardians. I have seen families quarreling over property, unnecessary expenses of law-required procedures, child support arranged by the court and other conflicts. All of these could have been avoided by a properly prepared Will or Trust.

As my service to our church family, to parishioners of all ages, and on a strictly confidential basis, I offer my legal training to you. This includes the preparation (and review) of your will, assistance with trusts and related estate planning documents. I do not charge for my work. The only cost will be $75.00 for the paralegal portion of the document preparation. Please contact me or one of the clergy if you have questions, or wish to explore how my ministry may be of service to you. My phone contact is 700- 993- 4879 or you may reach me at [email protected]. In Christ, John H. David, Jr. Parishioner and Attorney at Law

The Church Office will be closed on Monday,

Sept. 7 for the Labor Day holiday.

TrebleMakers Chi ldren’s Choirs Begin August 23 rd! By Susie Clements, Asst. for Children’s Music

Children and music go hand-in-hand, and worship and music go hand-in-hand. So what could be better than to put the two together to serve ―God and church‖! All children and youth in PreK through high school can be a part of St. David’s Music Ministry. The three choirs that collectively make up Treble Makers are:

The RSCM program, or Royal School of Church Music, is the curriculum for excellent choral singing and liturgical interpre-tation sponsored by the Episcopal Church. ―PATH TO SHINE‖ NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

August 19, 2015

This is a ministry from our Diocese that inspires under-served children to achieve hope-filled dreams. They meet here at St. David's weekly, on Wednesday afternoons, with mostly children from Mimosa Elementary School next door

to us. This program is in need of volunteer mentors and snack time helpers. The Roswell-Mimosa connection is the newest affiliate which began last spring. a wonderful collaboration of St. Aidan's and St. David's Episcopal Churches, and the administration at Mimosa Elementary.

Last May the program leaders said, "Everyone agreed that the time just flew by! Nine weeks came and went, relationships were formed, commitments made, and we can't wait to start back up in September." The children in the group were of Hispanic, Caucasian, and African American descent, and were specially chosen by their school counselors. We would love to take on one or two more students but we need more volunteers to do that. Call Dee Greenwood if you can help at 404-316-4781.

Starting September 13

at 10:15 a.m.

Sunday School for all ages

EfM (Education for Ministry) is a great opportunity available at our church on Monday nights for learning more about the

Bible, theology, and Church History in a small group setting. The program is administered by the Sewanee (University of the South) School of Theology. Since its founding in 1975, this international program has assisted more than 80,000 participants

in discovering and nurturing their call to Christian service. EfM helps the faithful encounter the breadth and depth of the Christian tradition and bring it into conversation with their experiences of the world as they study, worship, and engage in theological reflection together. For more information, contact Steve Cunningham (mentor) or Carolyn Powers (third year student). Steve's email is [email protected] and Carolyn's is [email protected].

Class starts September 14 and study materials need to be ordered, so contact Steve or Carolyn soon!

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDIES

The Li fe of Moses —

―Turning Wanderers

into Worshipers‖ Come join Moses and the Hebrews as they begin the Exodus from Egypt and journey to the Promised Land. This fascinating story traces God’s people through their wilderness wanderings. Learn how God delivers them from bondage, covenants with them, and guides them into a fresh understanding of Himself. As we observe the leadership of Moses, Aaron, Joshua, and Caleb, we will realize God’s plan for His people—redemption and a special relationship with Him. Watch the incredible transformation as God turns complaining wanderers into reverent worshipers!

Beginning Sept. 10 Every Thursday morning

10:00 am—11:30 am Grace Parish Hall

Call Kim Freeman 770 442-3128 for details.

―Voices of Fai th‖: The Psalms Join us for a lively journey into the richness of the Psalms of the Old Testament! Please come every Wednesday morning beginning on September 9th, 11:00 a.m. – 12 noon in Grace Parish Hall for “Voices of Faith”: The Psalms. For additional information, please contact Anne Elizabeth at [email protected]. The Psalms reveal Israel’s passionate willingness to talk frankly with God using unflinching speech about the whole human range of experience: anger and pain, confession, gratitude, fear and hope. The Psalms reflect the voices of faith that have found God to be their rock and refuge, strength and joy. We will pray with the Psalms every week, look at key expressions of faith matters, and explore the reference of the Psalms that fill the gospel of Christ.

VESTRY NOMINATIONS

St . David’s Vestry

Nominations Begin

September 13 St. David’s has been very blessed with an abundance of God’s gifts provided by a loving parish. These precious gifts enable our community to continue to grow and spread the love of God not only in Roswell, but around the world. This is only possible through strong spiritual leadership, teamwork and clarity of vision.

The Vestry of St. David’s is the vehicle by which our parish achieves this vision. The twelve Vestry members are elected as parish leaders to work closely with the clergy and take an active role in fulfilling God’s plan for the church. Each year, our parish nominates 4 candidates to become members of the Vestry. This year, nominations begin on September 13 and close on September 20. This should allow all members of St. David’s the opportunity to vote for these very important vestry positions. The following are the requirements for serving on the vestry according to the Diocese of Atlanta Canons & Constitution, Canon 31, Section 6, (d).(1): ―Those qualified for election to the office of Vestry Member shall be as follows:

Any confirmed communicant in good standing of the Parish who is not less than eighteen years of age,

a regular attendant at the services of the Church in the year preceding election,

and known by the treasurer to have made and fulfilled a stated financial commitment for church support.‖

Other qualities the Vestry is looking for:

Demonstrates generosity in time, talent and treasure

Demonstrates strong leadership qualities (principled, comfortable voicing concerns, considerate of other’s opinions)

Responsible, caring and willing to forgive Do you know someone who demonstrates these qualities? If so, please consider nominating him/her by submitting the name to a member of the clergy, the Vestryperson of the day, or you may email your choice of nominee by visiting www.stdavidchurch.org, clicking on Our Church and then Vestry, and choosing which member to send your email.

Vestry Nomination Forms will also be available at a designated table in the mailbox hallway before and after Sunday services and also in the church office during the week of Sept. 13.

For more information, please speak with any member of the Vestry or clergy.

Put your thinking cap on

and start considering

candidates!

SMALL GROUPS UPDATE

The Joy of Small Groups in a Large Congregation

submitted by Ron Bagwell

About 6 years ago I moved to Alpharetta from a very small Episcopal Church. I was concerned about being "lost" in a large congregation of 3+ services each Sunday.

Early on I was asked to be part of the leadership team that was being organized for St. David's seniors. I immediately had a small group of people that I would know, work with, and have as friends. When the monthly 59 & Holding meetings started, I had a larger "small group." Then other opportunities emerged - Foyers, Bible Studies, etc. I felt completely at home at St. David's because of these small groups.

In years past I had been part of what is called a Small Group Reunion where 4 of us met weekly for lunch and shared our journeys with Christ and the successes and failures we encountered each week in our walks. We held each other accountable, listened to each other without judgment, prayed for each other and trusted each other's confidence.

This year, St. David's will focus on discovering our gifts and talents and how those can be used in the numerous ministries St. David's offers. All these ministries are small groups!

If you are interested in knowing more about how to get involved in a Small Group Reunion, please contact me at [email protected] or 803.240.7203.

The following is from the August 7 Forward Day by Day: We all have blind spots about ourselves and about reality. We only see

in part. That is why being a humble, lifelong student of Christ is so

important. And we can't travel this journey alone. Community is

crucial. In community we learn more about ourselves (and God) as we

pay attention to the voices and other perspectives in our lives. When we

judge without pity or compassion, we see our errors reflected in the faces

of others. In these instances, we have friends and family who will pick us

up and love us back into right relationship.
