After all expenses were paid, the race had a net profit of approximately $400. Gary Droze – The Maclay pole vault pit is in need of replacement. This pole vault pit is used by all the high schools, not just Maclay students. Gary informed the Board that the cost of replacement is $10,000 and asked the Board for consideration of matching whatever funds Maclay boosters can raise which he believes will be around $5,000 After discussion among board members, a motion was made to donate up to $3,000 to this project and in exchange, it was asked that over the next two or three years, all students using the pole vault equipment volunteer at GWTC races. The motion was seconded and approved. Bill Hillison – Bill presented the proposed budget for the 2015 Bowlegs 5k. A motion was made to approve the budget, seconded, and approved. THE FLEET FOOT Page 7 Volume 40 Issue 1 Presidents column - Thank you! Thank you to GWTC for having the confidence in me to serve as your president for 2015. I have had so many of you express your confidence in me that I am starting to believe that I can actually pull this off. I have big shoes to fill. Thank you to our returning board members, our new board members, our outgoing board members and those who ran for the board and we're not elected. Please rest assured that I will be reaching out to all of you for help. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered or plans on volunteering your time to the club. Whether it is working one water station at one race to being Bill Lott, the amount of time and effort put forth by our club members never ceases to amaze me. Thank you to my family. While I have mastered self doubt and worry, they managed to convince me that I can do anything. When I was deciding whether or not to put my name in the hat for the GWTC president I asked each of them if I should do it. Ann said yes. Tony said yes. Andrew, our youngest, said no. I asked why he said no. He replied that he just wanted to vote against his brother and that he really thinks I should. Finally, thank you to Felton Wright for being a great role model in more ways than I can say. This is going to be a fantastic year. As usual we get it kicked off with the usual variety of GWTC races that offer something for everyone: Swamp Forest marathon, half marathon and 6.5 miler on January 3, Bowlegs 5k on January 10, and GWTC 30k/15k on January 17 (plus a whole bunch more – check out the calendar). If you are not quite ready to race but are itching to get some serious training then check out the latest Tempo Group being headed up by Manny Gutierrez at 6pm Thursday nights at McCord Park. No one is too fast or too slow for this group, just remember to wear reflective clothing. Tony Guillen

The Bowlegs 5K Run for Scholarship is Saturday, January 10.

In addition to supporting a great cause of providing scholarships to needy returning full-time undergraduate students at FSU (the race has provided over 150 scholarships of $500 to date), you will benefit from running the race in several other ways. First, you will qualify for the GWTC Running Series Extreme Challenge. To succeed the Challenge, you must run all the GWTC races for 2015, the Bowlegs being the initial race of the year. Second, you will be eligible for the hundreds of dollars of door prizes given to those runners in attendance just before the announcement of the awards. Finally, you will work toward keeping that New Year's resolution of getting back to more serious running. To learn more visit the Calendar at the GWTC website or to register go to EventBrite.com.

THE FLEET FOOT Page 13 Volume 40 Issue 1 How They Train Eric Laywell Age: 50 Did you compete in high school XC or track? Both, as a senior at Huron HS, Ann Arbor, MI. Did you compete in college? Both, as a freshman at Alma Col-lege, Alma, MI. How many years have you been running? 34 How many miles a week do you typically run? These days, 35-45 miles/week. What are some of your lifetime PRs? 400m 0:51 800m 1:56 Mile 4:11 5K 15:10 10K 31:29 15K 49:12 HM 72:24 Marathon 2:38:02 What are your training goals? I don’t really have specific training goals anymore. I just enjoy running with friends or my dog, and putting out a hard effort in occasional races. What does your typical week of running look like? Monday: No running. 60-75 min. of weights. Tuesday: 6-7M including 10 x 800 on grass at anaerobic threshold pace (10K race effort) with 90 sec. recovery. Wednesday: 8M; relaxed pace. Thursday: 6M; relaxed to moderate pace, followed by 10 x 100m strides. 60- 75 min. of weights in the p.m. Friday: 5-8M; moderate pace. Saturday: 5-7M including 4 x 1200m at max VO2 pace (about 5K race effort) with 4 min. recovery. Sunday: Long run of 1:45 to 2:30, depending on time of year. Relaxed, aerobic pace. How does your training vary over the course of a year?

It’s relatively consistent. My long run in cool months is 15+M; 12M in summer. Do you take recovery or down time? I usually take one day/week off from running, but I don’t plan any extended breaks during the year. What time of the day do you normally run? Almost always in the early morn-ing How much sleep do you usually get at night? 6-8 hours. What injuries have hampered your training over the past year? I’ve never been seriously injured. Occasionally I get some tendinitis, which clears up with reduced training or short layoff.

What type of running shoes do you prefer? I’m fortunate to be able to wear almost any kind of shoe. I look for something cushiony, flexible, and on the clearance table. I do occasionally splurge for Hoka’s. It’s twice the cushioning at triple the expense, but I would eschew pavement entirely if not for them. Do you race in a different type of running shoe? For a road race, Hoka Rapa Nui. For trail or XC races I have a variety of shoes, but I don’t know what they’re called. Do you use weight training? Yes! How often and for what muscle groups? About every third day, cycling through three different workouts. I focus on bench, incline and shoulder presses, pull-ups, rows, curls, back and knee extensions, squats, and lunges. Almost all exercises are done with barbells or dumbbells rather than machines, and the weights are moderate to heavy. Do you stretch? Very seldom. What are your favorite running routes? Trails at Phipps and Maclay Gardens, Old Centerville Road and Alford Arm in winter What running resources do you like that would benefit someone else? The best thing to do is read a lot and experiment to find what works for you. If I had to recommend one, single resource it would be Heart Monitor Training for the Compleat Idiot by John L. Parker The principles are sound,

Ithel Jones Childhood ambition: I grew up in Wales, a country famous for its sheep farms, castles, and rugby prowess. So, as a child my ambition was to be either a sheep farmer or a rugby player. Proudest running memory: I had knee surgery in 2006, and my leg was in a brace for almost 2 months. At that time I thought my running days were over, and so my proudest running memory was 12 months later when I finished the 50K at the Tallahassee Ultra Distance Classic. A close second was helping my daughter train for her first ever half marathon last year. Current occupation: I’m a Professor in the School of Teacher Education at FSU. If money were no object, what profes-sion would you choose? If money were no object I would have a smallholding with livestock and I would grow organic produce. Indulgence: Strong coffee and strong ales …not at the same time!

Non-running hobby: At home, I enjoy spending time with my family, and lis-tening to, and playing music. I also enjoy visiting different countries with my family. Favorite books: Anything that’s not an academic paper or text! I especially enjoy reading bi-ographies and historical books. Running inspiration: Right now I’m in awe of Mo Farrah. He is the current Olympic, World and Euro-

pean champion in the 5000 meters to 10,000 meters. I’m also inspired by Sebas-tian Coe who held three world re-cords (800m, mile, and 1500m) at the ten-der age of 22! Perfect day: For me the perfect day involves spending time with people I care about, good food, and an awesome location. Biggest challenge: My main challenge is time! There’s never enough hours in the day. My other challenge is staying injury free.

simple, and applicable even if you don’t use a heart rate monitor. How has your training changed over the years? I used to run 3000+M / yr. Now I run 1800-2000. I’m no longer compulsive about running each day. I still enjoy running hard workouts and occasional races, but have little interest in what the clock says. What examples can you give of specific training methods that have produced results? Without a doubt: anaerobic threshold running.

(Continued from page 13) Longish intervals at about 10K race effort with relatively brief bouts of recovery. 3 of my favor-ite examples include 20 x 400m with 30 sec-onds rest, 10 x 800m with 90 seconds rest and 2 x 2M with 3-4 minutes rest What advice do you have for beginning or experienced runners to help them with their training? You don’t improve by training hard. You improve by recovering after you train hard. Editor’s Note: Read Eric’s full “How They Train” narrative on the GWTC web site!

THE FLEET FOOT Page 15 Volume 40 Issue 1 Megan Jones Childhood ambition: When I was in elementary school, I always said I wanted to either be a balle-rina, an interior designer, or an author. Proudest running mem-ory: Finishing my first ever half marathon last February! I remember when I ran my first one mile race at age 9 and I thought it was never going to end, so it's amaz-ing to think that I went from that to running a half mara-thon and actually enjoying it! A second would be when I won the 1 mile race at the St. George Island Sizzler. Current occupation: I'm currently a senior in high school and will be going to university next year. I'm trying to figure out what I want to major in; I think I want to go in to the field of international relations or public policy/law, possibly focusing on public health. If money were no object, what profession would you choose? I would be one of those people who gets paid to travel around the world, taking photographs and writing about my experiences. Indulgence: Anything involving chocolate. Non-running hobby: I play the piano and I also play the violin in

my school orchestra, and I spend a lot of time organizing and partici-pating in projects for service clubs that I'm involved with at school. I also really enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, and traveling. Favorite books: I have always loved the Harry Potter series! I enjoy when I have time to read any books for pleasure rather than required reading for school, al-

though one required summer read that I truly did enjoy was The Poisonwood Bi-ble. Running inspiration: My dad (Ithel Jones) is my running inspiration, because if it wasn't for him I never would have started running in the first place, let alone continued with it. He has always trained with me and encouraged me, and he taught me how running can be enjoyable even though it's challenging. Perfect day: Actually having free time (i.e. no college applications, homework, or studying for exams) and being able to spend time with my family and friends. Biggest challenge: Having enough time in a day to do every-thing! It's difficult to balance all my school work, working on college applications, extracurricular activities, running, and finding time to relax.

Christmas Tale

At this time of year it is patently clear That the males are the ones who are blest.

Thoughts like "goodwill to men" we hear time and again And we find them quite hard to digest.

As we women all know, men think they run the show, And sometimes we allow them this pause.

But it gets on our nerves, like too many hors d'oeuvres When we want to get at the main course.

Many times out of mind the same problem we find, Leaving plans to the menfolk is risky.

Christmas spirit they think is some kind of a drink, Such as vodka, Bacardi, or whiskey.

Since we carry the load, men keep out of our road, We are ready and willing and able.

For it's perfectly clear, that the stuffed turkeys here Are not always confined to the table.

The traditional way is now rather passe, Let’s give credit, where credit is due.

Then you’ll see, man or boy, in return you’ll enjoy The fruits of OUR goodwill to you.
