Sometimes - when you are angrywith someone, it helps to sitdown, take a moment to cool off,and think about the problem....

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we’re kids? Ifyou’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions. How oldare you... “I’m four and a half” ...You’re never 36 and a half...and you’re four and a half goingon five! That’s the key. You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back. You jump to thenext number. “How old are you? “I’m gonna be 16.” You could be 12 but you’re gonna be 16.And then the greatest day of your life happens...you become 21. Even the words sound like aceremony...you BECOME 21...YESH! But then you turn 30 ooohhh what happened there?Makes you sound like bad milk ... He TURNED, we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now. What’s wrong??? What changed?? You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, your PUSHING 40... stayover there, it’s all slipping away...You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, you’re PUSHING 40, youREACH 50 ... and your dreams are gone. Then you MAKE IT to 60 ...you didn’t think you’d doit!!! So...you BECOME 21, you TURN 30, You’re PUSHING 40, you REACH 50, you MAKE ITto 60...then you build up so much speed you HIT 70!!! After that, it’s a day by day thing. After thatyou HIT your 80’s you HIT. My grandmother won’t even buy green bananas: It’s aninvestment you know, and it may be a bad one. •

Myth #1:

The Medicare program is part of Social Security and administered by the Social SecurityAdministration. This is a half-truth. The Medicare program is closely associated in the public mind with Social Securityretirement and survivor cash benefits, and is authorized by the law called the Social Security Act.However, the Medicare program is run by a different Federal agency called the Centers for Medicare andMedicaid Services or CMS.

Myth #2I will not become eligible for Medicare until I reach my full retirement age (which is beyond my 65thbirthday) and collect my Social Security retirement benefits. This is not true. The age of eligibility for Medicare remained 65 even when the cash benefits full retirementage started to rise above 65. Therefore, a person can be 65 years old, begin to receive Medicare benefits, and yet not apply for or receive cash Social Security benefits until a later point. In addition, seniors whochoose to receive (reduced) Social Security benefits earlier than age 65 (“early retirement”) may bereceiving checks for several years before they become eligible for Medicare at age 65.

Myth #3Once I start receiving Medicare benefits, any other health insurance I may have becomessecondary. Medicare pays first and other insurance is supplementary to fill in gaps in Medicarecoverage. This is another half-truth. It is true that much of the private health insurance seniors have is “Medi-gap” innature and “wraps around” their Medicare coverage to reduce their out of pocket costs. However, thereare some kinds of insurance that are primary. These include employer-provided health insurance benefitsfor seniors still working, certain workers compensation benefits, and some amounts paid in connectionwith automobile accident liability claims. Medicare employs a coordination of benefits contractor whichcollects information to identify potential situations in which Medicare is the secondary and not the primarypayer.

Myth #4Medicaid covers health care costs for seniors who are poor and Medicare is for everyone else. The fact is that Medicare covers virtually all seniors when they reach 65, regardless of their financialcircumstances. Seniors who are unable to afford Part B premiums, deductibles and coinsurance underMedicare can have those costs met by Medicaid, which is a means tested program. Medicaid also coverslong-term care not as medically intensive as the skilled nursing care and rehabilitation care covered post-hospitalization under Medicare. Because long-term care can be so expensive, even middle class seniorssometimes spend down their assets to the point where they qualify for Medicaid long term care benefits.Medicaid is very different from Medicare not only because it is means tested, but also because it is aFederal-State program that differs significantly in coverage and benefits from state to state. Day to dayoperation of the program is up to state governments, which share in the cost. Also, much of the focus ofMedicaid is on providing benefits for low income women and children.

Myth #5Medicare limits the number of days you can be hospitalized, taking this decision away from yourphysician. This is widely believed, but not actually true. The Medicare payment rules do include a standardizedamount for a given diagnosis or procedure that assumes a typical length of stay for that ailment. However, this is an average and In some cases may require shorter stays while others longer stays. Yourphysician remains the best judge of how long you need to stay in the hospital. Hospital stays are generallyshorter now than in years past, no matter what type of health insurance is paying the bill.
