In recent years we have heard from parents that students are spending more and more time at home doing school

work with their family computers. As part of the EPS 5-Year Instructional Technology Plan, next year’s 6th-8th grade stu-

dents will receive an individual Chromebook for educational use next fall. The district is finding that much of our education-

al content requires access to technology, and Chromebooks allow us a cost-effective way to assure that students have this

access when it is needed.

As part of this initiative, Parents of 2019-20 Elkhorn Middle School students can attend an orientation either dur-

ing Back to School 101 or Open House in August. The exact dates for these orientations are not yet set, but the district

wanted to begin communication with parents.

Students at EMS will have an important stretch of standardized testing beginning April 2nd. ALL students will be taking

the state reading test (NSCAS-ELA), state math test (NSCAS-M), and a series of tests known as MAP. Eighth graders will

also be taking the state science test (NSCAS-S). The following is a summary of the testing schedule:

April 1—5: ALL students at Elkhorn Middle School will take the state reading test (NSCAS-ELA).

April 8—12: ALL students will be taking the state math test (NSCAS-M).

April 15–18: 8th Grade students will take the state science test (NSCAS-S).

Apr 29—May 10: All students will take MAP. This is the second administration of the MAP test this year and will show the

growth of each student from fall to spring.

These are all very important assessments that truly allow us to measure the academic growth of each student. Please

assure that your child is getting plenty of sleep and eating breakfast each morning. If you have any questions regarding

these assessments please contact Mrs. Garrison or Mrs. Owens.

Elkhorn Public Schools Policy 507.13—Internet Safety Policy was written in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act. Tech Savvy Parent tips are intended to inform and educate parents of technology that may be available to their students. Tips may feature apps that are educational as well as those that may be a cause for concern to parents.

Currently, both Apple and Android provide reporting features on the usage of a device in the form of Apple’s “Screen Time” report and Google’s “Digital Well-Being” report. Both options provide parents with an opportunity to better understand their child’s device usage, from a broad report detailing the amount of time spent on the device, down to the number of minutes spent on a specific app. In addition, both platforms also allow the ability to limit time spent on specific apps, and the ability to create downtime by setting specific times of the day where the device is unable to be used for anything other than the specific requirements you put in place.

Fore more information, check out Common Sense Media’s breakdown of “Screen Time” and “Digital Being” by following the appropriate link below.
