THE 39th OHMC ANNUAL OPEN SUMMER CONTESTwas held at Pymatuning Lake the weekend of July 13th & 14th,2009. This was the send year in a row that the members voted tohave this event at Pymatuning. As always the event was open tothe public. Headquarters was set up at the main beach Pavilionnear the causeway. Special thanks to the park management forallowing us use of the Pavilion instead of renting a tent. Thisworked out very well for us. Saturday started us out with a nicemorning and afternoon but by early afternoon the wind picked upclouds unleashed a good drenching upon us. Sunday was nice allthe way thru the awards ceremony. We hosted 56 muskie anglersFrom Ohio, Pennsylvania and even a few from West Virginia, inpursuit of the mighty muskie. Attendance was down this yearunderstandably with as tight as things are right now for a lot ofpeople. There were no huskies caught this year which was a sur-prise for this lake, but the fishing were down overall too. I wouldhave thought we were all going to tear them up with the stormsthat rolled thru. But most attendees had a hard time of finding thefish. There were only 16 muskies turned in total with a fewanglers registering multiple muskies. The three winners in theSportsman Division received a trophy award. I would like to con-gratulate everyone on good releases to let these fish be caughtagain in the future.

New Banquet Site for 2010By Fred Lederer OHMC President

After much thought, the Board of Trustees has decided tomove the location for the OHMC Annual Awards Banquet to beheld in March of 2010. After many years at Zanesville, we decid-ed it was time for a change. We hope that you and your familieswill find the new facilities more pleasant, upscale, and offer moreopportunities for fun. Hopefully this new change will appeal toyou to bring your entire family. The new facility for 2010 will beCherry Valley Lodge in Newark, Ohio. Newark is about 30 milesto the West of the Zanesville Ramada Inn, so location is very sim-ilar to years in the past. A private survey was conducted on ourmessage board but very little participation was offered up by themembers. After a month, only 10 people participated in the sur-vey while only even 65 read the questions. By comparison twiceas many people read a post entitled “Happy Holidays” or simply“Email”. I was very surprised how poor of a response we actuallygot from the survey. After talking to the trustees, six of them hadparticipated in the survey which means only four membersoffered their opinions. We really wanted to hear your thoughts onthis. So, the Board made the decision on this matter yet still con-sidered the information from the survey. And now what the newbanquet facility will be like.

Cherry Valley Lodge (www.cherryvalleylodge.com), in addi-tion to offering the basics that we need, like a banquet facilityand meeting room, also offers some world class food at a reason-able price. Unfortunately it will not be a buffet as the price didnot fall within our budget. Prices for a buffet would increase thebanquet price to around $45 per adult, but if the members feeldifferently about this, we are willing to listen. All meals for 2010will be the same for adults and will be a sit down dinner. Mean-ing someone will bring your food to you. The actual meal will bedecided by the Board at our next Board meeting in November. Atthis time we estimate the meals to be around $30 per adult.Slightly more than the previous $25 at Zanesville Ramada Innfor the 2009 banquet (Ramada Inn also wanted a 38% priceincrease for 2009). But here is where a big difference comes into

place. Younger members of your family will get a discount, almost half the price of an adult meal at Cherry Valley Lodge.Very young members of your family may purchase a cheeseburger or chicken tender meal for a much reduced price com-pared to paying the full price for a meal as in the past, about $10.Cherry Valley Lodge is more expensive on their rooms comparedto the Ramada Inn but in line with most decent hotel chainsacross the state. Attendees reserving a room at the Lodge willfind they are offering a discount for the event from their normalprices. Each room is very clean and comfortable with modernamenities like a plasma TV. They have several room styles to fityour needs. They have a nice stocked pond to walk around (sorryguys no muskie or fishing in general), a rustic stone fireplace inthe lobby, a very nice restaurant, but is quite upscale. There is aday spa that the wives may find especially appealing and a fullservice lounge near the banquet hall to enjoy time with friendsduring our social hour, between the business meeting and thebanquet.

Oh yea, they also have another amenity that may appeal toyour family, like an onsite water park! I’m talking water slides, pools, a lazy river, a supervised area for the younger kids, alounge inside the water park for the adults. And the Lodge is alsooffering OHMC members a $5 discount off their normal waterpark admission price of $20 in addition to the room discount forthose that may want to make the banquet a nice weekend getaway.

I visited Cherry Valley Lodge in April to check out the facilityand was very impressed by the friendly staff, coordination of the3 weddings taking place on the same day, the food quality, thecleanliness of the water park and rooms. It was overall a very niceexperience and I hope that the membership finds this an excitingnew change for our banquet. Some of the details still need to beworked out and full details will be in the February newsletter asusual. I hope to see a lot of new faces at the 2010 banquet. I alsoencourage you to visit their website to see photos of what you canexpect at Cherry Valley Lodge.

OHMC 50th AnniversaryBy Fred Lederer OHMC President

For those of you that may not be aware, OHMC will soon becelebrating it’s 50th anniversary in 2011. That is quite a mile-stone for a group such as ours. Something else to take pride in,is that as best we can find out, OHMC is the second oldestMuskie club still in existence, in the United States. We have onlyfound one other club, The Wisconsin Musky Club that is olderthan OHMC. They were founded in 1953 as opposed to OHMCbeing founded in 1961. Some things to keep an eye out for willbe some special 50th anniversary items available from our list ofclub merchandise items. If you have any suggestions for these50th Anniversary items, let me know and the Board of Trusteeswill consider what items will be best for the club at our Novem-ber meeting.

Another way we would like to celebrate the event is to have a“memory lane” of older OHMC items, memorabilia, photos, tro-

phies and such to have on display at the 2011 Banquet. Severalmembers have already donated or loaned us items from theiryears of membership with OHMC. We will accept just aboutanything of interest, related to the club, musky stocking, ormusky hatchery program. We will carefully handle your originalitems you wish to loan to the club and we will be equally happyto accept any duplications you could offer us for the event. Soplease take a little time and see what you might have in your tro-phy room or file drawer at home, talk to your parents or grand-parents that may have gotten you started musky fishing in thefirst place. Anyone wishing to help us with items for this displayplease contact me so I can start putting together a list of items sothat we can avoid duplications. Let’s see what kind of interestingitems we all can come up with and then piece together a real nicewalk down memory lane thru “50 years of hunting 50 inchers!”

The annual OHMC Nite Bite was held August 15th & 16th,2009 at Leesville Lake. The water temperature was 83 degrees. The air temperature was 90 degrees to start the event at 6:00 PMSaturday evening and dropped to 65 degrees just before sunriseon Sunday morning. It was a cloudless night and with the starsshining brightly it was a beautiful evening to be on the water. There were 27 anglers whom fished the event and there were 4muskies caught and released. We had no Huskie Muskies caughtand the fishing was slow for all but a few anglers. Even with thetough fishing, everyone had an enjoyable event.

Thanks to those club members who helped make the event asuccess, Jerry Rice, Jeff Ferjuitz, and Dave Hammond. Thewinner of the 50/50 raffle ($27.50) was Gordon Seldon ofBolivar, Ohio.

al fund. His trophy will be awarded at our annual banquet to beheld in March of 2010.

Dave Hammond of Chillicothe, Ohio continued his strangle-hold on the lead for overall fish caught during club events bylanding a 32” muskie.
