Reminiscing with Colleen & Dee

Tuesdays &

Thursdays at 1PM

A Capella Version

The “Music for Hope and Inspiration” was thrilled to welcome our friends and fellow musicians, Colleen and Dee, as we reminisced through many wonderful songs from the past! Colleen and Dee guided us in singing, dance and conversation as we listened to songs such as “Rock Around the Clock”, “Peggy Sue”, “Put Your Head On My Shoulders”, “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You” and “Build Me Up Buttercup” which were all crowd favorites. MaryLou pumped the group up with her high energy dancing and Donna was able to identify the names of most of the songs as they played and let the group know those names. Thank you Colleen and Dee for leading this wonderfully engaging group with us and looking forward to your next class!

The “Music for Hope for Inspi rat ion” learned two new musica l terms today…. “a cappel la” and “ Improvi sat ion”! The group had a rea lly fun t ime thinking of songs and s inging such as “You Are My Sunshine”, “Row Your Boat”, “Sunshine On My Shoulders” and “Stand By Me”. We sang without mus ica l inst ruments therefore “a cappel la” and a lso came up with these songs wi thout any p lanning therefore “ improv isat ion”. Leah treated us wi th a beauti fu l so lo on “Here Comes the Sun” and we a l l enjoyed being super s i l ly as Co l leen and Dee led us on “ I f You ’re Happy and You Know It”. We a lso had a surprise guest , Fel ic ia ’s dog Gi lbert ! I t i s a lways fun and educat iona l to spend a mus ica l a fternoon with f r iends!

“Hot TopiX” cont inues to provide current information that indiv idua ls want and need to know about which was c lear during this g roup wherein indiv idua ls learned about and discussed the h is tory of Mart in Luther King and why we celebrate thi s day every year. We learned that Mart in Luther King as wel l as other indiv idua ls such as Rosa Parks helped to br ing community together through advocacy of the r ights of a l l people. The group enjoyed watching a port ion of the famous “ I Have a Dream” speech and Steve mentioned that he remembers watching that orig ina l ly on te levi s ion. We discussed that not only the words but the poetic way that Mart in Luther King spoke was very captivat ing. Donna reminded us that there i s a ho liday coming up to honor Mart in Luther King. The group a lso di scussed that people usua l ly do vo l -unteer projects especia l ly at th is t ime of year to honor the work of Mart in Luther K ing. Thi s i s being done at J i l l Court Day Habi l i tat ion this week wherein indiv idua ls a re des igning book marks that wi l l be then provided to the Somerset County YMCA to dis tr ibute to chi ldren in loca l publ ic schoo ls when they a lso receive book donations . Med Talk Our “MedTalks” programs are a lways so current wi th topics and what i s more current than learning about what a COVID test i s ? We were thri l led to have Rutgers Medica l Student f r iends, Joseph Hawes and Krysten Mayers , back today to prov ide education and a l i ve ly d iscuss ion regarding “What is a COVID nasa l swab test”! We discussed that COVID -19 i s caused by germs that come out of our nose and mouth as we ta lk and breathe which is why wear ing a mask over both

our noses and mouths and socia l dis tanc ing by s ix feet from others i s so important. Joe and Krysten showed the group what i t was actua l ly l i ke to have the COVID nasa l swab done and a few people whom have had thi s test done before re lated thei r experiences. It i s good to ta lk with f r iends about things such as these so that we feel more comfortable. The group a lso ta lked about ways that we can s tay

hea lthy and engaged dur ing thi s t ime such as go ing for walks and exercis ing in our homes as wel l as keeping busy with act iv it ies . Thank you Joe and Krysten and the whole group for making us feel much more comfortable with a COVID nasa l swab should we need to have this test done in the future!

Ind iv idua ls at JCATC honored Mart in Luther King through vo lunteer ism by des igning and creating bookmarks that wi l l be provided to chi ldren in the Bridgewater Raritan and Somerv i l le Schoo l Dist r icts . This co l laborat ion was through the Somerset County YMCA and Togetherhood Somervi l le.
