WASHINGTON STATE REP’S RANT!!

Well, believe it or not, I’m back, just like a bad penny, you can’t get rid of me. It’s because I care about UMCI. I know all of us are struggling trying to keep things together and I know that if we work together we can revitalize UMCI.

That’s why I took the International Rep’s position as well as, the Washington State Rep and the Columbia Basin Rep. I am going to give my 100% to all of these positions, and we together, will get interest back in the group as well as revitalize our membership. Word of mouth and display-ing our UMCI patch on your coat, vest or motorcycle, is great advertising for UMCI.

On our way down to the International this year we stopped at an RV Park for the night and saw other motorcyclists, so I went over to speak with them. They were intrigued about UMCI so I handed out our cards. They were from Idaho, so I gave the information to the Idaho group in hopes they might hook up with them.

The other motorcyclists were pulling trailers and they didn’t know there was a group of riders that do the overnight rides so maybe something will come of that. We are unique in that most of us go for the overnight campout be it trailer, RV or Motel it, as long as you’re able to hook up with other people that love to ride like you do.

So when you see a group that might be stopped eating lunch or dinner, engage in a conversation with them, you never know. Dan Magee sent out really well made up brochures and business cards that you can put your information on and invite someone to your next breakfast or upcom-ing rally. If you need some please let me know, I’ll get my hands on them.

I have set up the Washington State rally for July 6th 7th and 8th for 2018 at Pine Near R.V park in Winthrop. It looks like a great place to have a rally and the management there said they have had several groups have their rallies there. More information to come but the date has been set.

I will be calling on all of our group here in Washington and trying again to get to your breakfast. Please bear with me, it might take some time but I will be there.

Again, I will do my best to get our club interested and riding again.

Thanks

Kevin and Kevi Besel!!!

Our regular meeting was held on the ninth of September, at Bob's Café, in Moses Lake at 8:00 AM. The October meeting will start at 9:00 AM.

There were about 12 of us at the meeting. Good to see some familiar faces, back for at least breakfast. We had a couple of riders but not enough, but I’m hoping that I can get back next Sunday if doctor releases me on my shoulder. It has been a long time since I have been on a ride with the group and I am certainly looking forward to that.

I told the group that I had set (since I’m also the Washington State Rep) the Washington State Rally is July 6th, 7th and 8th, at Pine Near RV Park, in Winthrop. It looks like a great place to hold a rally and within walking distance to the main street of Winthrop, so that is done for 2018.

I explained to the group what I was after with the survey that was sent earlier. They un-derstood what I was trying to get to. No one in the group wants to see UMCI in Moses Lake or any other area stop functioning, but there are a lot of concerns about how to get us going and some think that lowering the joining age might work for us but who knows.

I told everyone that our best sale is word of mouth and one on one contact with other rid-ers that maybe interested in our style of riding. We are trying to revitalize the Columbia Basin Group and I will do my best to do exactly that. I told the group that it is their club; all participation is welcomed. It was nice to have one of our older members come up to me at the meeting (Larry Pearl) and tell me he would do anything it took to help me get us fired up. I will definitely take him up on that offer.

Our next meeting is October 8th, at 9.00AM. Bobs Café, Moses Lake WA. If you have someone that you feel might like to see what it is we do, bring them with you they are more than welcome.

In the meantime Ride Safe Ride Lot's and most of all have a ton of fun.

Kevin and Kevi Besel!!!

We had an extremely small turnout for the September meeting. So much so that all business was tabled until next month and we enjoyed breakfast and typical chatter. Various reasons for the lack of members in attendance were that Rich is in the hospital for tests, Charlie, John and Tracy are in Tygh Valley for the annual gathering there and the fact that it fell on Labor Day week end so many were doing other things. We certainly all wished Rich the best and hoping he'll be back to 100% in no time. Certainly by the time this sees print. That being the case for official UMCI business to report, I'll take some time to report other "monkey business." Petey and I made two trips to Toad Rock Motorcycle Campground this summer. The first for "Nothing

Happening" in honor of Canada Day the end of June through early July. The second trip was for the Bigfoot Sidecar Club Rendezvous the third week in July. Both were fantastic trips, both made on the FXDWG with the Spalding sidecar. Which meant we packed light and didn't tow the little trailer. Only drawback to that was I didn't have a cabin reserved for the first trip because I'd been planning on taking the trailer and large tent. When that didn't happen, I packed the little Diamond Free Spirit tent that Barb and I used to camp with before our Kwik Kamp days. We were con-siderably younger then. Crawling around on all fours to drive and retrieve tent pegs or to get dressed inside the tent were not as enjoyable as it once seemed. I was able to get a cabin for the Rendezvous however. The final one available. It is called

the "Egg" and is a tiny little camp trailer set permanently on the ground. It was fine- room to stand up and a bed up off the ground. The reason for making both trips on the Dyna were that my long time favorite ride was in the shop at Vintage V-twin receiving an S&S 111 cu. in. engine. We'd been at the Toad for all of ten minutes when my cell phone rang. It was Bill at Vintage. "Hi!" he said, "Your bike is ready." Ha! I couldn't have ridden it to the Toad or towed the little trailer with it anyhow, had to do some break in miles first. But.... it's a joy to ride now!! In the owners manual with the new engine, under break in procedure, it states "short bursts of speed are OK." I believe that's a slight understatement. It should read, "Short bursts of speed are una-voidable." Here's hoping everyone has had a happy summer and been unaffected by the fires. We've all been dealing with the smoke but we're better off than those dealing with flames and loss of property. And... we're far better off the those in the path of Harvey. -Tom Wells

10 October riding destinations in the Pacific Northwest

Summer 2017. It was a good, long, dry one. But all those fires didn't help and made for some blaz-A riding days. Octo-ber may be a great month to make up for some of that if you can swing a few days here and there.

Of course with fall settling in, so are colder temps. We sug-gest a Gerbings heated jacket as your primary liner, a pair of Gerbings heated gloves as your primary hand covering. As for camping - that may be a bit less fun than it was - say in September, but if you're insistent consider a few nights in the tent mixed together with a few nights at a motel or re-sort to shake the chill off.

The rain is going to come in any day now - right? So we've picked 10 great places to tour out to here in the Pacific Northwest in consideration. Five are along the coast, and if the yucky marine rain pattern is in, we've got five to the east of the Cascades as a backup.

1. Vancouver Island, BC - Starting with Victoria, Vancouver Island makes a grand touring destination. You could pull together anything from a 2 to 5 night stay over and tour out to places like Port Ren-frew, Tofino and Gold River. And imagine what the Butchart Gardens look like in early fall!

2. Olympic Peninsula Culinary Tour, WA - You like good food - right? Take a few days to tour the Olympic Peninsula and feast on its bounty of great food places along the way. Check out the details at Seattle DINING! Caution: Some places close up for winter about this time so be sure to call ahead.

3. San Juan Islands, WA - The tourist season is officially over. Saddle up the bike and explore one is-land a day figuring a day to get to the first one and a day to get home. Use a Benchmark atlas to find your way around.

4. Kings Valley, OR - If ever there were a place we'd want to return to year after year, the Kings Valley between McMinnville and Philomath is the cat's meow. Grab a copy of our guide to Motorcycling Through Western Oregon and seek out these awesome roads.

10 October riding destinations in the Pacific Northwest, continued . . .

5. The Oregon Coast, OR - Any monkey with a paper map can figure this one out, only now the RV population is greatly reduced. Be sure to add in a few interesting side trips off the beaten path, like Applegate Valley or the Vortex House of Mystery.

6. Road 31A - Kaslo to New Denver, BC - This road goes down in the books as one of the most stun-ning in Canada. It's such as great road it's even awesome in the rain. But it's not gonna rain while you're there! Getting to and from will be your adventure.

7. The Cascade Loop, WA - It's your last chance to ride Highway 20 before they close it up between Mazama and Ross Dam. But do you know the entire route when done in full includes a ride down Whidbey Island. Get the official map at: http://www.cascadeloop.com/.

8. The Palouse, WA - Brisk sunny mornings, deep blue waterways, the last wheat cut of the year, a corn maize or two. There's nothing like a few sunny days in the Palouse to wrap up a grand year of riding. Be sure to make the trek up to Step Toe Butte, enjoy the fresh seal coat along the Starbuck Highway, and if you do your homework you can cross several of the dams on the Snake River that have been closed since 9/11.

9. Cour d' Alene, ID - Grab a room in town and do some exploratory day rides up to Sand Point, down to St. Maries and all points in between.

10. John Day Fossil Beds Tour - In the fall, the walls of the monument glow during the hours around sunrise and sunset. During the day the roads here are some of the best riding in the Northwest. Shaniko, Fossil, Condon, Heppner. These names cause any rider who's been to them to start salivating just upon hearing their names. Grab a copy of our Motorcycling through Central and Eastern and Ore-gon guide and go tear it up!
