Week 2 Term 3 2020 Although it is still early in Term 3, student life inside and outside of the classroom is in many ways returning to its usual levels of diversity and energy. Given there is greater separation of parents from school activities, at least in the physical sense, I encourage you to remain connected and aware in other ways, including the main GSLC Facebook page or Instagram (gslc_principal) and the Facebook pages for specific curricular and co-curricular areas. Even a brief skim of recent posts, shows students engaged in class and in the range of returning co-curricular teams and ensembles. As has been necessary over recent months, we will continue to review a range of activities and events planned for, or postponed to the second half of this year. We are keen to find ways for as many of these to occur consistent with existing or revised guidelines and advice. There are events and activities that may need to occur differently and as has been the case, there may be some events that are unable to occur in 2020. Although changes are more frequent than usual, the College Calendar, accessed through the website, is the best point of reference for the status of specific events. We thank parents for your ongoing understanding and cooperation where we are not able to do things as we would usually. Some of the restrictions, particularly around parents engaging with school activities and the campus, are not natural for our community. As we look to other regions in Australia we can also be thankful that we are currently able to be close to normal in many ways. From the Head of

Junior Years

Busy, busy, busy!

I’m sure you’ll agree that last semester was tremendously busy and now, quite suddenly, we’ve reached the start of Term 3 – how time flies! I convey my thanks and congratulations to the students, staff and parents of the Junior School for all that has been achieved particularly during this Covid period. Semester One reports were emailed out at the end of last term and I thank all parents who gave us feedback on the Zoom Parent Teacher Interviews. These were by all accounts, very successful and allowed a real international flavour to the interviews, with parents working overseas and in other areas of Queensland able attend the interviews - certainly something for us to consider as we move forward. With the reports and interviews, I encourage you to reflect upon your child’s successes, areas for growth, and to have meaningful conversations for what the rest of the year might bring. We have much for which to be thankful. At GSLC, we’re very fortunate to have teachers who have a passion for teaching and learning. They believe, as do I, that they make a difference in the lives of young people, and in our community. I often talk with parents, teachers and students about the importance of positive relationships. At GSLC, we’re blessed to have a community committed to working together and creating positive relationships based upon trust, co-operation and respect. Every day I see wonderful examples of students, teachers and parents working together to create the best possible outcomes for all involved. As always, we have an ‘open door policy’, and as such, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to discuss any issues that may arise throughout the year.

Cyber Safety

I am appealing to our parents to monitor your children’s cyber activities. Recently we have had to deal with some inappropriate comments made of others via social media. The power of social media in connecting people is wonderful; however, it too can bring harm to others. Your support in monitoring your child’s social media access is greatly appreciated.

Prep Enrolments for 2021

If you are considering Prep for next year can you please make sure you have contacted Sharon Odore [email protected]. We are now moving to a

waitlist for Prep and we are assuming all GSLC siblings have contacted the College and filled out an application. If this is not the case, please contact the College ASAP.

Grooming and Uniform Standards

Parents are reminded of the need to ensure that grooming and the wearing of uniforms are in line with the school expectations. Particularly, we would draw your attention to the following areas: Uniform must be in good condition and of the

correct size. It must be worn well and in its entirety at all times – including to and from school and when in public.

Socks worn up over the ankle. Jewellery or fashion accessories are not permitted

except for a watch and a discreet chain with a Christian cross.

Hair is to be neat and tidy, clean, off the face/eyes and conservatively styled and coloured.

Coloured fingernail polish is not permitted. A College hat must be worn during all outdoor

activities, further the College hat must also be worn at all break times, as well as before and after school when students are in the grounds.

Students are strongly encouraged to take additional protection against the harmful effects of the sun during periods of extended exposure to the sun (slip, slop, slap).

Boys’ Grooming & Uniform Boys’ hair should be short (number 3 minimum) and

kept off the collar. Girls’ Grooming & Uniform Girls’ skirt should be knee length or longer. Girls’ hair should be neatly tied up or in a ponytail if

long enough to do so using plain hair clips or white, maroon, navy, gold or College checked scrunchie/ribbons. Flowers and other decorative adornments are not permitted.

Girls may wear a maximum of two plain gold or silver sleeper/stud earrings in the lower lobe of each ear.

Our students have a responsibility to uphold the ethos of the College, and to show pride in their College by wearing the uniform correctly – both at College and when in the community. Your support in this regard is greatly appreciated.

SHEP is now a firmly established aspect of music learning in Queensland, bringing together young people from all over the State, in regional centres and Brisbane to share their passion for making music.

Social Media Watch - Omegle

Concerns over popular site

Is your tween or teen using the Omegle website? Recently, the College has become aware of the website, which has gained increasing popularity with teens. Omegle.com also has similar apps available on Android and Apple under the names Omegle and Omega. Omegle is what is called a “chatroulette” website, it hooks you up with a random stranger to chat. If your tween or teen has a phone, chances are they are using any number of social media sites and apps that you may not know anything about. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram may be the main ones, but there are MANY more so it’s important to know the ins and outs of what your teen may be dealing with. What is Omegle?

Omegle is a chat website which promises to help you “talk to strangers”. You do not necessarily need an app to use this on your phone or tablet. You can use it easily through your internet browser. According to the Omegle website site home page, “Omegle is a great way to meet new friends. When you use Omegle, we pick someone else at random and let you talk one-on-one. Predators have been known to use Omegle, so please be careful.”

That last sentence says it all…! How does Omegle work?

You just start chatting with strangers by putting in a topic and clicking either Text or Video. That will take you to a new screen where you start chatting. The website will then connect you with a stranger to start talking straight away.

What Parents need to be aware of

You are supposed to be over 13 to use Omegle. However there is no date of birth input. If you are under 18 you are supposed to use it only with a parent or guardian’s permission. It encourages chatting to strangers – it’s the very objective of the site. The video chat allows people to see each other – I’m sure we can all see the risks and concerns associated with this. Moderation is imperfect. Omegle is moderated, however the website itself says “moderation is not perfect.” Tips for Parents

Have a look into the site yourself. Have a conversation with your teen about internet safety. Discuss concerns about the risks involved with talking to strangers online. The College has blocked the site, so students should not be able to access Omegle through their school laptops. For more information please see CyberWise’s web article: https://www.cyberwise.org/post/2018/07/31/is-omegle-ok-for-kids-what-every-parent-should-know or the eSafety Commissioner’s post: https://www.esafety.gov.au/key-issues/esafety-guide/omegle If you have any further concerns, please contact your child’s relevant Year Level Coordinator.

Yr 12 Retreat

What a wonderful day for our Year 12s on the last day of Term 2, when we held the inaugural Year 12 Retreat. The purpose of this event was to encourage our Year 12 students to reflect on the importance of connecting and lifting each other up through positive interactions and communication. This was the underlying message of the presentation from UPP (Unleashing Personal Potential) at the start of the day.

Our encouragement is for our Year 12 students to finish strongly, and we look forward to continuing to support them through their last few months here at GSLC. We are very proud of the resilience and strength they have shown during this year, and know that this will hold them in very good stead for this final stretch.

Mrs Karen Lunn Head of Senior Years Students

The Battle of the Houses sessions which followed saw plenty of friendly, fun competition, and it was wonderful to see our students so engaged with making a graduation gift for one of their peers, which will be included in their graduation pack at the end of the year.

Vocational Pathways to Success

Year 12 students Jana Capiaghi and Harriet Wilson have successfully completed their Diploma in Beauty Therapy after 18 months of study through Demi International as part of their senior schooling studies. Jana has already secured casual employment as a now qualified Beauty Therapist and Harriet has opened her own salon with hopes to build up her business upon graduation from school later this year. Congratulations to both Jana and Harriet on their commitment to balancing both senior studies whilst successfully completing their Nationally recognised Diploma level vocational training. The girls were photographed with their teacher at a recent graduation ceremony and Harriet writes about why she wanted to train in this field. By Harriet Wilson Year 12

I was able to learn these skills by practising on real clients on a Thursday afternoon when the College would turn into a clinic. Learning facials was my favourite, as I enjoyed learning about the skin structure and performing the facial treatments was very satisfying. This course has provided me with the skills to be able to achieve my dream of opening up my own business. I now run my business on the weekend and after school and am beginning to build up my clients. I am excited to be finishing grade 12 as a qualified beauty therapist with my own business up and running. I would highly recommend to any students who are considering doing further training whilst at school to do it because it is 100% worth it and it is so rewarding to be finishing school with a qualification.

School Based Traineeships & Apprenticeships

Congratulations to both Grace and Levi on their strong work ethic and for impressing our local employers.

Felix gained experience with Noosa Electric Co. fitting powerpoints, stripping cables

and changing downlights during his time working alongside qualified electricians. When asked what he enjoyed most about his placement, Felix explained that it was the variety of job tasks across the fortnight, experiencing the differences between commercial and residential workplaces, chatting with local customers and getting to use his keen problem solving skills. Felix loves that there is much still to learn and is keenly building his experience in the hopes of gaining a school-based apprenticeship within Electro-technology. A big thank you to Noosa Electric Co. for providing this experience for Felix.

Hairdressing Work Experience opportunities across various fields are appreciated.

We also celebrate with Grace Stuart Yr 11 who has secured a school-based traineeship within Certificate III Hospitality this week. Grace impressed her employer so much that she was snapped up for further training.

Levi Herriman Yr 11 has also been offered a school-based apprenticeship within a Certificate III Electro-technology, following a successful work experience placement.

Year 11 student, Felix Webster, has also demonstrated a strong work ethic opting to spend two weeks of his school holidays gaining work experience in his chosen field, despite a busy term 2.

After wanting to start my own beauty therapy business, it led me to enrolling myself in Demi International, where I commenced a Diploma of Beauty Therapy over 18 months as part of my senior schooling. Each Thursday I attended the Maroochydore campus to learn beauty treatments, this involved learning massage, facials, makeup, waxing, tinting, manicures and pedicures.

Plastic Free July

A global movement to reduce plastic waste

Plastic Free July aims to encourage people to make small changes in their lives to reduce plastic waste. In 2019, 250 million people from 177 countries took part in this challenge, helping to save 825 million kg of plastic waste. Below are just three small changes you can make today, to reduce your families plastic pollution: Switch shower products in bottles to bars of

soap, such as shampoo and face washing bars. Buy food in bulk to help avoid single use plas-

tics, while limiting shopping trips. Use containers or wax wraps for lunch box items

instead of aluminium foil or cling wrap. It is said that every single piece of plastic ever made still exists today. So while these steps seem small, your actions will help contribute to a vision that sees a world free from the harmful effects of plastic pollution. Senior Jersey 2021

There has been a real buzz in the SA2 office with Yr 11 students trying on the sample Senior Jerseys for sizing. A reminder that the order form and payment for the Senior Jersey for 2021 is due on Friday 14 August at the Business Office. This is an optional uniform item for Year 12 students only, and can be worn with the sport or house uniform.

We will need to send our order off before the end of term in order to ensure that the jackets are ready for distribution at the end of the year. Unfortunately, late orders are unable to be processed, so students will need to be definite about their decision as to whether or not they would like a Senior Jacket in 2021. Students are asked to pay a deposit of $25 by Friday 14 August 2020, with the balance of $69 to be paid early in November. Many thanks to the Senior Jersey Committee for their time and effort in coming up with the design for next year’s jersey. Mrs Karen Lunn Head of Senior Years Students

Year 11 Formal Dance Lessons

Year 11 students have commenced their ballroom dance lessons with Mrs Kay Hansen, who has been sharing her expertise with GSLC students for many years. Last week, she taught our students the Tango and Progressive Jive, with our students picking up these old favourites very quickly.

There was certainly an air of excitement in the HPE Centre on both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon with our students enjoying their first lessons together, and we look forward to having Kay back next week to teach some new dance steps.
