years older then The last thing she wanted was her younger brother hang-ing around But John as little broth-ers are wont to do had no qualms of bugging his older sibling

ldquoI remember Martha going to our mom and saying lsquoMom make John leave us alonersquo You know the usual classic stuffrdquo Lucas said

One of Martharsquos friends had brought a stack of comic books Now you must understand Johnrsquos parents disap-proved of such reading To them it was garbage Typically Johnrsquos only op-portunity to peruse them was at the doctorrsquos offi ce So that move on behalf of Martharsquos friend was a stroke of ge-nius John left his sister and her pals alone Thumbing through the comic books he encountered typical fare fa-miliar faces like Superman

Then he gazed upon Katy KeeneJohnrsquos 7-year-old eyes could not

look away She was the most beautiful woman hersquod ever seen On the cover she appeared to be emerging from a rose and wearing a strapless evening gown The title for the edition was ldquoKaty Keene Spectacularrdquo Turning the pages John discovered a typical story for the character promoted by Archie Comics as ldquoAmericarsquos Queen of Pin-Ups and Fashionsrdquo The young starlet was aching for her big break in show business

ter a woman in the rsquo50s Katy was on her ownrdquo Lu-cas said ldquoShe was beautiful obviously and she was having fun And she would talk to the audience like lsquoWhat do you think of this So and so sent this de-sign and Irsquom going to use this in a movie productionrdquo

Keene Bill Woggonrsquos indelible creation who made her debut in 1945 through Archie Comics has evolved over the years with Lucas around for a con-siderable portion of the ride When fans speak rev-

erently of the comic-book character they do so not just of Woggon but Lucas as well

Now the character has her own TV show on the CW network starring Lucy Hale (ldquoPretty Little Li-arsrdquo) as Katy and conceived by ldquoRiverdalerdquo creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa whorsquos also chief creative of-fi cer at Archie Comics The fi rst episode which de-buted Thursday Feb 6 envisions Katy in a world thatrsquos a mix of ldquoThe Devil Wears Pradardquo ldquoAmeri-can Idolrdquo and ldquoA Chorus Linerdquo It depicts Katy and her pals as 20-somethings pursuing their dreams in New York City whether it be fashion music or Broadway

Lucas is not directly involved in the show How-ever he was contacted by individuals connected to it during pre-production He sat down with The Beacher to discuss everything Katy Keene and his own personal journey in relation to the character during a brief break from his work as offi ce man-ager for Access LaPorte County

Katy Keene made her debut in the summer of 1945 specifi cally in Wilbur Comics No 5 then in popular comics with Archie Jughead Betty and Ve-ronica She scored her own title in 1949 as well as specials like ldquoKaty Keene Pin Up Paraderdquo and ldquoKaty Keene Fashion Book Magazinerdquo Readers could sub-mit drawings of outfi ts and accessories which often were incorporated into the comics the individuals given credit within that edition Paper Katy Keene dolls in costumes often appeared in issues

The general thrust of the character Lucas says was that she was ldquoalmostrdquo there on the cusp of suc-cess That big break was like the proverbial carrot dangling just within reach

And for Lucas the son of musically inclined parents James Clyde and Mary Jane Lucas Katy Keene was the gateway to securing their acceptance of comic books in their home Music you see was

In the late 1970s Marilise Flusser a buyer and fashion coordinator for Saks Fifth Avenue wanted to use Katy Keene comic-book covers as the back-drop for window displays Lucas says she wrote to 500 of her favorite individuals who contributed de-signs to the series About half of them wrote back one of which was longtime Katy Keene fan Craig Leavitt who would serve as editor of the Katy Keene Fan Magazine from 1979 to 1983 Lucas was a fre-quent contributor

By that point it should be noted Lucas had al-ready forged an unexpected friendship with Katy Keenersquos creator Wanting to express his gratitude for Woggonrsquos legacy Lucas simply contacted direc-tory assistance and obtained Woggonrsquos information

His fi rst call land-ed with Woggonrsquos wife who said her husband was out golfi ng mdash his favor-ite pastime mdash but please call back later Lucas did That night Wog-gon did not disap-point The conver-sation and ensuing friendship for Lu-cas was a dream come true In fact it was Woggon who suggested Leavitt get in touch with Lucas Woggon felt Lucasrsquo style was similar to his

With the fan magazine herald-ing a resurgence in Katy Keenersquos pop-ularity she was reborn through Archie Comics in 1983 The fi rst four issues Lucas says were reprints of Woggonrsquos original art The next four were generated by various artists

ldquoFans started writing to Archie (Comics) saying lsquoWe love the fact you are bringing

ldquoMy parents did not want me to get into comic booksrdquo he said ldquoBut when I got them they found out I was quiet and I read them And then my mom starting reading them saying lsquoOh these are pretty good Oh look at these shoesrsquo So Mom kinda got into it

ldquoDad didnrsquot like it because it was a lsquowomanrsquos comic bookrsquo but then he found out it was created by a man named Bill Woggon who owned a horse ranch out in Santa Barbara He said lsquoOh OK this is OKrsquo I said lsquoDad shersquos good lookingrsquo He said lsquoWell yes she isrsquordquo

Comic books also spoke to Lu-casrsquo love of draw-ing that emerged at a young age The family didnrsquot have a lot of mon-ey so he would frequently doodle on the inside cov-ers of books Often his parents bought him a ream of typ-ing paper to keep him busy That passion fl ourished later at Ball State University where he was a double major in art educa-tion and advertis-ing art That was the springboard for a successful career as an art director for companies such as Bick Advertis-ing Odegard Ad-vertising and Tay-lor-Chalmers

And for Lucas Katy Keene never left the picture even by 1961 when her comic books were discontinued a victim to tele-vision and the core audience having moved on to other things To him she was forever that visionary dream a young starlet courting success

Turns out plenty others shared his enthusiasm

So thatrsquos how Lucas became involved with de-signing all the fan club paraphernalia including pens membership cards and T-shirts

Then came the offer Lucas didnrsquot see coming Ar-chie Comics wanted him on board as a regular Katy artist He was thrilled and terrifi ed but reassur-ance from others including Woggon that he was a natural fi t eased those jitters

ldquoBill said in a letter lsquoI am so glad you are doing Katy You understand the character You have an in-nocent sexiness with her that worksrsquo

ldquoI wanted to make sure I did right by Billrdquo Lucas continued ldquoI wanted him to help me He said lsquoGo with it Have fun I want to play golfrsquordquo

Indeed Lucas felt a sense of duty to Woggon and the character to make her sexy but not trashy Pre-serving her dignity was of utmost importance

Lucas would continue with Archie Comics until the early 1990s when the character again was re-tired However he continued to design Katy Keene Christmas cards and paper dolls books

When ldquoRiverdalerdquo debuted on the CW in 2017 and with characters like Archie Jughead Betty and Veronica reinterpreted in a darker noirish setting Lucas had a feeling another Katy Keene revival this time on television was just around the corner Internet buzz certainly fanned the fl ames Then he received a call from Kimberly Jago a respected tal-ent manager in the entertainment industry specifi -

cally through Jago amp Associates She represented actress Ashleigh Murray who plays Josie McCoy on ldquoRiverdalerdquo and who would go on to play the same character on ldquoKaty Keenerdquo Jago wanted to know as much about the character as possible and an Inter-net search had revealed Lucas as her go-to guy

ldquoShe wanted to know everythingrdquo he recalled ldquoShe said lsquoTell me the storyrsquo So I told her what I

could and she was fascinated by thisrdquo(Another bit of serendipity Jagorsquos family name is

Lucas had the chance to see the fi rst episode and wasnrsquot surprised by the many modern tweaks Katy Keene after all must evolve with the times That she lives in New York working at the fi ctional Lacyrsquos department store and has yet to fi nd success is true to the character Hale may be shorter than the character but those big eyes those full lips Lu-cas says are Katy Keene all the way

Flattered as he is by such comments Lucas be-lieves the show embraces the spirit of the character Her appeal he stresses is timeless

The Odd Becomes Endearing in ldquoTimmy Failurerdquoby Andrew Tallackson

ldquoTimmy Failure Mistakes Were Maderdquo is about an 11-year-old boy on the cusp of leaving elemen-tary school for the treacherous terrain of middle school He lives in a fantasy world running a detec-tive agency that investigates menial tasks with a dutiful if imaginary polar bear by his side

In educational circles Timmy would be described as ldquoon the spectrumrdquo The movie however is not interested in psychologically dissecting him

Nor are his eccentricities sentimentalized where Tim-my is perceived as an oddball saint which is why the fi lm now streaming on Disney+ is so refreshing This is a family pictures that celebrates those who march to different beat while also suggesting there comes a point when embrac-ing the real world is essential

The movie is based on a se-ries of books by Stephan Pas-tis of which I was not aware Pastis cowrote the screen-play with actor-turned direc-tor Tom McCarthy who took home an Oscar for the excep-tional 2015 newspaper drama ldquoSpotlightrdquo What these two have created is a most unusual tale that not only defi es expectation but categorization It is a com-edy with elements of drama and fantasy and with no mushy payoff

Timmy (Winslow Fegley) lives in Portland Ore with his single mother Patty (Ophelia Lovibond) Dad abandoned them years earlier Timmy does not live in the moment Speaking in the direct clipped tone of a 1940s gumshoe detective he never answers with a ldquoyesrdquo but an ldquoaffi rmativerdquo Rather than own up to his mistakes he replies with ldquomistakes were maderdquo He has friends a boy with a most unfortu-nate last name Charles ldquoRollordquo Tookus (Kei) and the adorable Molly Moskins (Chloe Coleman) who fi nds Timmy ldquofascinatingrdquo which is elementary school code for having a crush on him

Timmyrsquos misadventures range from the death of the class hamster to being convinced local hip-sters are dangerous Russians to the introduction of Momrsquos new boyfriend Crispin a proud-as-punch meter maid played by Kyle Bornheimer with enor-mous good cheer

All of this sounds painfully cute and contrived but ldquoTimmy Failure Mistakes Were Maderdquo has a sneaky way of growing on you taking on more weight The outcome of Timmyrsquos missions is less

crucial with each passing day The meat of the fi lm is the notion of a child so fearful of change he re-treats into a more comforting world where he calls the shots where he can control the outcomes

Under lesser hands ldquoTimmy Failurerdquo would esca-late to a maudlin close where Timmy miraculously ditches all his quirks and advances to middle school Instead we are introduced to the school guidance

counselor Mr Jenkins who has sly ways of mak-ing Timmy briefl y release his grip on fantasy tak-ing baby steps into reality The character is played by the last person one might think could pull this off Craig Robertson that playful goof from ldquoHot Tub Time Machinerdquo and ldquoThis is the Endrdquo How-ever the actor is remarkably restrained offering ldquoTimmy Failurerdquo its most affecting moment when he plunks down next to Timmy on the school play-ground tenderly suggesting he can grow become a better person by learning from mistakes not dis-missing them

Everyone in Timmyrsquos world in one way or an-other is different and the lesson of the picture is thatrsquos OK Thatrsquos what makes life fun

I wasnrsquot sure at fi rst what to think of ldquoTimmy Failure Mistakes Were Maderdquo Now after some thought I admire it

The group will learn how to identify trees and shrubs in the winter at 1 pm EST Saturday Feb 22 at Lydick Bog Nature Preserve The bog is not on the HCHrsquos trail however it contains a variety of habitat types including wetlands interspersed with high ridges and islands of upland forest Many plant-species characteristics of bog habitats have been identifi ed there with the preserved site pro-tecting much of one of Indianarsquos last remaining bogs

Lydick Bog is located just west of South Bend at the northern edge of North Chain Lake 25898 US 20 The entrance is about a half mile from Quince Road The two-hour hike will cover 14 miles of moderate hilly terrain The leader is Doug Botka stewardship technician at Shirley Heinze Land Trust and an Indiana Dunes State Park resource management technician

termittently dullThe second year

with no host the evening was shape-less the entertain-ment pointless fi ller In an evening where few key categories recognized women and people of color the opening musi-cal number featur-ing Janelle Monaacutee and Billy Porter and the mid-show rap recap by ldquoPitch Perfectrdquo alumnus Utkarsh Ambudkar felt like jumbled last-ditch attempts at inclusivity Why not just open with a rousing montage of the yearrsquos best fi lms and performances Short and sweet then get to the nightrsquos fi rst batch of nominees Or there was that performance of ldquoInto the Unknownrdquo from ldquoFrozen 2rdquo that featured not only Idina Menzel but also singers from various countries Why not open with that re-vealing how the magic of Hollywood speaks to audi-ences across the globe

Wellthat didnrsquot go as expectedNow in its fi fth year The Beacherrsquos annual ldquoBeat

the Editorrdquo Oscar contest yielded my worst slate of predictions to date Only four out of eight correct and those were the givens the acting categories

Then again few might have predicted the his-toric night awaiting Bong Joon Horsquos ldquoParasiterdquo The South Korean fi lm a pitch-black comedy about a desperate familyrsquos invasive behavior among the wealthy was an awards steamroller fl attening com-petitors through surprise after surprise during the 92nd annual Academy Awards on Feb 9

Best International Film and Best Original Screen-play No shocker there But Best Director and Best Picture too Stealing all the one-take thunder from Sam Mendes and his World War I epic ldquo1917rdquo Few saw that coming ldquoParasiterdquo now stands as the fi rst foreign fi lm to snag Best Picture let alone during the same night it also won Best International Film

That ecstatic embrace has been heralded as a tri-umph for the South Korean fi lm industryand it is But was it the right move to have ldquoParasiterdquo take Best Picture and International Film Letrsquos explore that in greater detail

ldquoParasiterdquo is a good fi lm A very good one Social satire so dark and acidic yoursquore curious to see how Bong Joon Ho as writer and director tops himself scene after scene He gleefully skewers expecta-tions You shouldnrsquot like the storyrsquos near-destitute family Theyrsquore pathetic leeches at best But there is something wickedly humorous about how they orchestrate their attacks and their devotion to each other oddly touching The end though is too extreme Brutally bizarre in a not-quite-satisfying way I may have to watch it again distanced from the hype to see if my opinion changes

A win for Best International Film however is fi ne by me And Original Screenplay Fiendish inge-nuity should be rewarded

But Best Picture and Director A fi lm that takes the nightrsquos top two prizes should be one that will be remembered years from now that will stand the test of time We still talk about ldquoTitanicrdquo ldquoFor-rest Gumprdquo ldquoSchindlerrsquos Listrdquo ldquoThe Silence of the Lambsrdquo ldquoTerms of Endearmentrdquo ldquoRockyrdquo ldquoLaw-rence of Arabiardquo ldquoOn the Waterfrontrdquo ldquoCasablan-cardquo You catch my drift Movies that work their way into our collective cultural consciousness Whose appeal is not dulled by time

ldquoParasiterdquo is sharp no question but years from now people will still be discussing how Sam Mendes pulled off ldquo1917rdquo with what appeared to be no ed-iting Or the love-hate affair we had with Martin Scorsesersquos ldquoThe Irishmanrdquo Or the old-fashioned up-lift of Greta Gerwigrsquos ldquoLittle Womenrdquo Time will tell I suppose if we treat ldquoParasiterdquo with the same rev-erence beyond how it shattered barriers for South Korean fi lmmakers

LaPorte County Parks AwardsThe LaPorte County Parks staff board and foun-

dation revealed their annual community awards during the Feb 4 Park Board meeting

Organization of the Year went to the LaPorte High School Building Trades class of 2019-2020 Kurt Lawson the building trades board and stu-dents provided most of the labor to construct the new Luhr County Park shelter

Outstanding Park Service Award went to Bob Goethals who became the maintenance and con-struction supervisor two years ago In 2018-2019 he oversaw a majority of the construction oversight portion of the LWCF Grant at Luhr including de-signing and constructing the new shelter He also has coordinated and supervised the LaPorte Slicer building trades class along with its instructor

LCA Teen Arts CouncilHigh school artists are invited to an open house

about Lubeznik Center for the Artsrsquo Teen Arts Coun-cil from 11 am to 2 pm Saturday Feb 22 at the LCA 101 W Second St

The council connects teens from the region with professional arts experiences to deepen their under-standing of contemporary practices the roles art-ists play in society and their own creative voices In a typical year events include visits to artistsrsquo stu-dios and trips to Chicago art exhibits Members can show and sell their work on multiple occasions in-cluding the LOK Wishing Tree Young Artistsrsquo Expo in June and the annual Lubeznik Art Festival in August opportunities free to participants

Participants also receive assistance in developing their college admission portfolios and portfolio re-views by top national art schools Senior TAC mem-bers have been offered more than $453000 in schol-arships this year from colleges and universities

Open house attendees can participate in silk-screen printing and button making or contribute to a collaborative mural Snacks and drinks will be provided Current TAC members will share their experiences

ing workshops titled ldquoDrawing Toolboxrdquo

Fantuzzo will touch on a different topic each month providing techniques and tips to effective-ly improve drawing skills Each session is from 10 am to noon Saturday with a 30-minute break for lunch Students can take a bag lunch or step out

And thatrsquos my intro to this tale of actually two tales The main characters are FBI and CIA agents sometimes working together sometimes working at cross purposes Work in some shady dealings and greed on one side re-venge and family secrets on the other and while it all sounds a little like cookrsquos stew it kept me up fervently reading the night away Work in some individuals with mental telepathy and the action becomes nonstop

This is my fi rst Coulter book and No 26 in this FBI Thriller series She also has a series called ldquoA Brit in the FBI Thrillersrdquo written with JT Elli-son Now on to this latest offeringhellip

FBI Agent Lacey Sherlock Savich is on her way home when she is broad-sided by an SUV that runs a red light As her car swirls around the street she catches a quick glance of a man rolling over the hood of her car Where did he come from

Sherlockrsquos husband Agent Dillon Savich is called by the hospital and told Lacey suf-fered head wounds that could affect her memory Sure enough when she comes around she doesnrsquot know Dillon or much of anything else

Imagine losing your memory of ever having a hus-band and son How frightening that must be And yet as Dillon shares the events of the accident with her tries to explain who she is and what she does for the FBI mdash both agents are part of the Criminal Apprehension Unit mdash small memories come back Her mind automatically switches into FBI mode and she starts asking pertinent questions wanting to get into the investigation

The woman driving the SUV is Jasmine Palum-bo security engineer for the Bexholt Group a com-munications security company The CIA recently accepted a bid from the company to install a spe-cialized fi rewall for a project

The man hit by Sherlockrsquos car disappears but blood on the windshield provides DNA that iden-tifi es him as CIA analyst Justice Cummings now MIA It becomes obvious he was running away from someone but who and why Could be it has some-thing to do with the damning information he found about Russia on the Dark Web Cummings hasnrsquot

shown up to any local hospital making Savich sus-picious and fearful for his life Closed-circuit TV cameras and witnesses at the scene show two peo-ple were chasing Cummings but disappeared after he rolled over Savichrsquos car and ran into an alley

Now it starts to get very interestinghelliptoo many questions and not enough answers and the laby-rinth begins to show its twists and turnshellip

Meanwhile the action turns to Gafferrsquos Ridge a small town in Virginia FBI Special Agent Grif-

fi n Hammersmith is spending some downtime hoping to reconnect with friends Jenny and Rose who run the popular Jennyrsquos Cafe in town A short walk down the streets of the town takes him to the outskirts where he hears the faint cries of a woman in trouble coming from a nearby house He enters in time to fi nd Carson DeSilva in a struggle with Rafer Bodine Griffi n breaks the manrsquos wrist and Carson gives Rafer a swing of a pipe to the back of his head Crisis averted Carson says she heard Bodine talk about the murder of three young women in the area It sounded to her he was implicated in some way He then kidnapped her and locked her in the basement of the house

They contact the sheriff Booker Bodine who just happens to be Raferrsquos uncle and a member of the most powerful family around And no one wants to cross the sheriff rsquos sister-in-law who is supposed to have psychic powers

The sheriff doesnrsquot believe the story Griffi n and Carson tell nor that Griffi n is an agent although he shows FBI credentials and tells him to call the local FBI offi ce The sheriff promptly puts the pair in jail but not before Griffi n sneaks in a call to his superior That brings in the cavalry in the form of a cadre of FBI agents who announce they are now in charge of the missing three girls When Savich hears of his friendrsquos troubles he heads down to Gafferrsquos Ridge The sheriff is not happy neither is his brother who is the local bank president and Raferrsquos father

Meanwhile back in Washington DC bodies are starting to pile up and Sherlockrsquos accident is head-ing in a whole different direction

Coulter has combined these two stories into one intelligent and complex book The characters are believable and the stories move along at breakneck speed mdash therersquos no unnecessary prose just a well-paced read
