Thank you!The Circus Committee would like to thank everyone who helped

prepare for the 2020 Circus. We, along with many of you, were saddened for the cancellation of the Circus due to Covid-19. We are hopeful to have it back in April of 2021 and again will be counting on all of our nobles and ladies for help! Stay tuned for more information.

In the meantime, stay safe and well! We hope to see you soon!

Kora Shrine Circus Committee

FROM THE DESK OF THE POTENTATE by Illustrious Potentate Gerard “Sonny” Jutras

Well, this year so far has undoubtedly been a challenge. Who would have ever imagined what we are going through now with this pandemic looming over us? Most events canceled and more cancellations to come. Most parades also canceled. The most important thing, however, is that everybody remains safe.

Thank you to everyone that made donations to the circus even though we did not have one. Also, thank you to everyone for working in the best interest of Kora and working with your leadership to keep everyone safe.

The Potentate Cruise to Alaska has been canceled. We may reschedule for next year. Lady Diane’s Paint Night is still on June 3rd. Unfortunately, I have just received word that the Northeast Fall Field Days in Gananoque have is also canceled.

My understanding is that although the Ceremonial canceled, many will still be going to Bayley’s in June for fun and relaxation. That’s great; it will be great to see everybody. We will not be able to assemble in large groups and will have to maintain social distancing. Not sure what other restrictions there may be.

The Divan has been working on calling all of the nobility to check on everyone. One of the significant issues we are finding is that the contact information of many nobles is not up to date. Please update your contact information. You can do it yourself on Web Fez, or contact Recorder John Knox at [email protected].

Noble Crawford Perry has been contacting over a hundred nobles every month to wish them a Happy Birthday. The nobles contacted were thankful and appreciative of his efforts. Thank you so very much, Crawford!

The Divan has been meeting on Zoom every couple of weeks to stay on top of everything. I’m hoping that beginning in June; we can go back to having regular meetings at the Temple. I’m sure we will have to maintain social distancing for awhile.

Please Help support Lady Diane’s fundraiser by purchasing a Fezkerchief or charm. The net proceeds will benefit the Kora Foundation.

Our sympathies go out to the Clown Unit as they have lost one of their own.

If you know of any noble that needs assistance in getting through these challenging times, please have them contact a member of your leadership team or the Temple.

Yours in Faith, ILL. Sir Sonny Jutras

The Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic Board of Governors, has regretfully made the decision to cancel the 31st Annual Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic. We sincerely share in the disappointment that will be felt by so many, especially the selected premiere high school participants from throughout the State of Maine.

This extremely difficult decision involved exhausting all efforts in regards to maintaining and providing a safe atmosphere for all involved, including our week long training camps and throughout game day events, while also still maintaining State of Maine and the CDC COVID-19 guidelines in conjunction with directives set forth by the Maine Principals Association in regards to High School sporting activities.

Net proceeds from funds raised will be donated to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children in the name of the 2020 Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic and its Participants.

The Board of Governors will continue to recognize and honor the 2020 Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic football and cheer participants throughout 2020 and 2021.

We would like to thank all of those that have volunteered and worked tirelessly in gathering information, brainstorming solutions, and dedicating so much of their time and energy toward this great event that will continue to make a difference in the life of a child.

Also, a big thank you to our several hosts for their guidance and patience throughout the chaos: Foxcroft Academy, Thomas College, Thornton Academy.

Lastly, Board of Governors would like to again congratulate all of the 2020 Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic Football Players, Cheerleaders, and Coaches for being selected and are extremely grateful for the fundraising effort and energy put forth to date. We couldn’t do any of it without you.

“Strong Legs Run, So That Weak Legs May Walk”Sincerely,Joe Hersom, President, Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic

KORA SANDS SUMMER 2020

207-782-68314

FROM THE RECORDER’S DESK………by John R. Knox, P.P., Recorder

Greetings Nobles:Needless to say – 2020 will be a “Year to Remember” – or more

appropriately, one to try to forget. All organizations have been challenged in the past three months to “stay connected” to their members, individuals have been challenged with working at home or in many cases, not being able to work. As Masons and Shriners, we must stay connected to our obligation to “assist a worthy brother, so far as we can, without injury to ourselves.” Keep this in mind in our daily lives and with our interactions with each other and with the general public. Our Facebook postings tend to reflect the frustration we all are feeling – I can only urge everyone to be civil and mindful of others opinions, regardless of your own thoughts and beliefs.

I want to focus on two very important topics in this “shortened version” of our Kora Sands.

FIRST: Our Temple budget and finances. Our Treasurer, Ill. Barry Gates, continues to monitor our finances in this time of reduced activity, especially given the cancellation of our annual Circus. Basic operating expenses continue, with virtually no income to offset them. Fortunately, your Divan Leadership closely monitors the budget at our regular monthly meetings, and to date we are “holding our own”. This will become even more critical as we near the end of the year with our major fundraiser, the Feztival of Trees, being more important than ever. This year’s Feztival will necessarily see some changes implemented, and we will need our Nobles and Ladies to assist to make it successful. Look for more information on this soon. In the meantime, our Nobility can help in other ways. Annual dues statements will begin to be distributed by Shriners headquarters beginning in August via email, followed in September by mail. We can all make a difference by making a Donation to Temple Operations when submitting your dues payment. The payment portion of the statement has space allocated to donate to the Temple or the Hospital. Please consider making a donation when you pay your dues.

SECOND: Communications. Electronic Communication is more important now more than ever. The current situation has had an impact on our communications efforts – many groups have used Zoom electronic meeting platforms, our “Kora Konnections” and email communications from our Potentate have attempted to keep everyone informed and up to date - the Divan and Membership Committee have been calling to check in with nobles. BUT – we are finding our database of information – the WebFez System – needs to be kept up to date. Email works to the extent that people actually READ it. Telephone calls work only to the extent that we have up to date numbers – which we are finding many nobles have dropped your land lines and have not updated us with your new numbers. PLEASE take the time to log into WebFez, update your personal information. I realize there are still nobles who do not use email, but we are very rapidly moving toward an all-electronic communications system. I see a time in the not too distant future that ALL communications will be via email or some sort of electronic means. Please consider “getting connected”. We have members at Kora who are willing to assist and guide in if you need some assistance.

We continue to have much to be thankful for in our Fraternity – most especially the Brotherhood we share and experience every day. Until we can meet again,

Fraternally,John R. Knox, P. P.Recorder

KORA SHRINE CENTER FOUNDATIONA 501 C 3 Corporation by Barry Gates, P.P., President

The Kora Shrine Center Foundation completed another successful year in 2019. With the help and support of a lot of individuals and businesses (both Shrine and non-Shrine), and units and clubs, we continue to raise funds to complete the necessary work on our building. Thank you to all who continue to be a part of this important work.

The Foundation has updated the donor recognition plaque that hangs in a prominent place in the building; the first landing in the grand staircase.

The work of the Founda-tion continues. It is critically important to preserve, pro-tect and maintain our beau-tiful historic building. No gift is too small. All gifts will be recognized and added to our Recognition Plaque. This Recognition Plaque will be updated for new donors and for additional funds received from existing donors. The Kora Shrine Trustees of the Building Association have identified $1.8 million dollars of additional funding that is needed to bring our building up to current standards.

MissionThe mission of the Kora Shrine Center Foundation is to raise

funds to preserve, protect and maintain the historic Kora Shrine Center and its significant artwork.

The Foundation will raise capital to help underwrite the real estate related costs associated with maintaining and preserving the Kora Shrine Center.  All donations to the Foundation are tax deductible under IRS Code 170.  Donors will be entitled to declare their contribution as a charitable gift.  Please consult your tax advisor.

The Foundation welcomes gifts of cash invested securities such as stocks and bonds, real estate, collectables, and life insurance proceeds.  Multi-year pledge-giving is also an option for donors.  Please consider the Foundation in your estate planning. Example: pledge-give $1,000/year for the next 5 years, payable in lump-sum or installments.   Representatives of the Foundation are anxious to meet with Nobles, and or their families, to discuss these and other giving-options.

Contact Rick Olfene or Barry Gates for more information.

“KORA SHRINE”.

Items will be sold at Kora Functions throughout the year and online here:

She also has a small supply of bracelets to accompany the charm in two different qualities – one is $10, and the other is $80.

KORA SANDS SUMMER 2020

207-782-68318

The Feztival of Trees, along with some of its subcommittees, have been working very hard to ensure another successful Feztival this coming November. The Feztival Committee wants you to know that we are exploring every option to increase attendance and, at the same time, offer a family centered and a FUN & SAFE event which will be our 15th Annual Kora Shrine Feztival of Trees.

A number of significant changes were made in late April by the Executive Feztival Committee, to the 2020 Feztival, upon recommendation to the entire Feztival of Trees Committee in consultation with the Kora Divan.    The Crafters will not be at the Feztival this year.

Somewhere between 15 and 20 trees will be relocated to the first floor from the second floor.

The ACSC Turkey Smoker will be moved ahead one week, which will to allow us to open on Thursday night and continue to open to the public until Saturday the 28th of November.

We are working on a new foot traffic pattern for those entering and exiting the Feztival.

We are also looking at ways to ensure the safety of our attendees as well as our volunteers.

As we move towards the fall; there may be additional changes that will need to be made.

Please check out our new & improved Feztival of Trees flyer in this edition of Kora Sands.

I want to give a shout out to a couple of our committees that have been working to ensure that we are ready to go. Our Decorating Committee has been hard at work painting and working on the backdrop for this year’s Feztival theme, Santa’s Workshop. The fishpond toys are in and will soon be wrapped & ready for November.

In January, a new Feztival Communication Committee was created. Their tasks are to work on social media, TV, radio, newspapers, and other

UNITS COLONEL CORNERby Bob Doyle , Kora Units Colonel

I think we can all agree that this has been a challenging year, which none of us could have ever planned for. Illustrious Sonny and the rest of the Kora Divan continue to lead the Temple on the safest path for the

Nobility with the ever changing information provided from the State of Maine. We thank them for that.

Since most of the parades and festivals are getting cancelled or postponed, it is vital that we stay in touch with our Unit members and any other Nobles that we may know. This comradery will keep us going and make us even stronger when we are allowed to see each other again. The remaining scheduled events seemed to be modified on a daily basis. This is where I ask for you to make sure you are getting the email updates from Kora. The Potentate has been sending out direct emails to the Nobility through WebFez and the Communications Committee has been doing a great job with the Kora Konnections. If you have not been receiving both of these different communications, please reach out to your Unit Director, myself or directly to the Recorder, John Knox so that your information can be updated.

We will make it through this and will be sharing waves at the parades and festivals soon. It may be in a different format, different parade lineup and different crowd distances, but I guarantee when you see that first child smile and wave back at you, you will remember why you joined Kora Temple and became part of what we believe is the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy”.
