Special Note - As most of you know, I have been elected to
the Divan as your High Priest and Prophet for 2015. I thank each of the nobility for placing your trust and confidence in me. I shall remain in the additional role of Chief Chaplain until a new Chaplain is named. One does not have to be a clergyman or even religious. What is needed is a dedication to Shrine Masonry and Sahib Temple, good speaking and writing skills and a sincere belief in Deity, however you celebrate it. Training will be provided. If you want to serve Sahib and the nobility in a unique, wonderful and powerful way, contact me at the email address above and I will forward your name for consideration.
The Month of Love - The month of February is the heart of winter; bitter cold in Western New York, New England and the Great Lakes region. It gets dark early and the days are blustery and short but February’s saving grace is that it is the month of love! Yes, February 14 is St. Valentine’s Day when we celebrate our highest and most selfless emotion - love.
Just who was St. Valentine? Historically, we really do not know. The Catholic Church believes he was Valentinus, the Bishop of Terni, a town in Umbria in Central Italy. He was arrested for teaching and preaching Christianity and while under house arrest developed dialogue with his Judge, Asturias. The legend tells us that Judge Asturias found Valentinus teachings and faith interesting and struck a bargain with Valentinus. If his faith could heal his blind daughter then he would escape execution and be freed. Valentinus laid his hands on the daughter’s eyes and her sight was restored.
The judge asked what he should do. Valentinus replied that he should break all the idols of the pagan Gods in the house and should fast and then be baptized. The judge
agreed and as a result freed all the Christian prisoners under his authority. So far so good, but once a preacher, always a preacher and Valentinus continued to proselytize which was very illegal in Third Century Rome and was taken before the Emperor himself and ordered to renounce his faith or die.
Valentinus refused, thus attain-ing martyrdom by strangulation on February 14, 269 AD. There is little fact in this official version but the lesson is the point. We really do not know who Valentinus was but his story is a lesson in faith, healing and love of others above self and fidelity to an oath. These are bedrock Masonic values and thus we learn from religious figures without necessarily practicing that creed or faith.
How did February 14, the legendary day of Bishop Valentinus’ death become St. Valentine’s Day? Moreover, why does it symbolize romantic love with cupids, hearts, gifts and greeting cards?
It is thought that it all began in Medieval England when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote of St. Valentine in his poem “Parliament of Fools” and extolled the delights of romantic love. The truth probably lies in the fact that February 14 is the deepest and coldest point in winter. In medieval times without central heat or electric blankets, it was darn cold in peasant huts and even in the Duke’s draughty stone castle. Cuddling was the favorite indoor sport of the time and the result was that February was the beginning of many a November birth. Without good old St. Valentine’s rowdy feast day on February 14, many a babe would not have been born. Thus, we associate him with regeneration of life, romance and love.
Isn’t February grand! It is cold up North, but perfect down here. We celebrate the good old Saint at the beach but for the young and young

Potentate’snotes
Nobles and ladies,
Wow! I did not think, in my early years on the line, that it would be such an honor to be the Potentate of such a great Shrine. Sahib is the best place to be. Never any cold weather. When it turns warm by noon, it is time to put the shorts and short sleeve shirts back on.
The Potentate’s Ball is almost upon us; from what I hear there are some great guests coming from the Imperial. Imperial Sir Jack Jones and rumors that Imperial Sir Doug Maxwell may be here if he does not have other commitments. It will be a great time for Sahib and all their guests from other Shrines.
Be sure to call Marylou about your reservations for Valentine’s Lobsterfest at(941) 366-4449 ext. 320. Bring your sweetie to the Shrine for a great dinner and entertainment.
Hospitals Days will be this month and Sahib has always done a superb job in its effort for the hospital. Be sure to wear your Fez and bright yellow vest.
Respectfully,
Connie Jacobi, Potentate

Chief Rabban’s notesby Carroll G. Scribner, [email protected]
Recorder’s notesby Ed Firquin, [email protected]
As Installation of Sahib Shrine Officers and leaders of the fraternity are now completed, we are all looking
for an exceptional year in 2015. There will be many activities, social events and meetings where decisions for our beloved Shrine will need to be addressed. As in the words of an old rock song, “times are a changin.” Working together as a team will be our charge, as Ill. Sir Connie Jacobi will guide us. As Shrine Masons, let us step out on the left foot that leads us to the position of a Master Mason and lend a hand when needed. Thinking not what you can get from Sahib but what can you do to help Sahib Masonry continue in our community.
Social events will be abundant this year so let us get started in February. The Potentate’s Ball was a magnificent affair, the activities over the weekend were wonderful and the experience was first rate. There is a Stated Meeting on February 12 at 12:00 p.m. after the Luncheon, a Club/Unit Head Meeting scheduled for February 14 at 10:00 a.m. Presidents please attend or send a representing officer to the meeting. Our Shrine needs each club and unit president or officer at each meeting to advise and consent for direction of Sahib Shrine’s present and future.
The evening of the 14th finds the Valentine’s Day Lobsterfest in the Main Hall. I understand there will be unforgettable entertainment; it will be an incredible evening. Contact box office for ticket reservations.
The Motor Corps Spaghetti Dinner on February 15 is always an experience with great food and friendship, so buy your tickets and bring the family along with your friends. This month there are many Masonic Organizations using our facility: Grand Lodges of Maine and Indiana, Indianapolis Scottish Rite and Rhode Island Shriners. When you see these brethren welcome them to our facility and Shrine. Keep an eye out for entertainment coming soon.
The Sahara Restaurant and Lounge is a place to find the best food, drink and prices in the area. If you have not visited lately, Noble Ed Shauan and his staff are extending a personal invitation to try the cuisine. Prime Rib Friday Night with a full salad and soup bar with other specials on the menu are treats to behold. Monday night may find pizza soon, along with hotdogs and tacos. Special Wednesday Night Dinners. Thursday nights find Hillbilly Club members preparing the Hillbilly country fixings. Daily lunches are served during the week and specials are made from scratch by Head Chef Bob, Chef Kevin or Chef Phil. Sure to please any palate. Try the Sahara you will enjoy the fare. Remember to call for reservations for Wednesday and Friday nights so your experience will be the best it can be. I will see you at Sahib, remember that child within and let it out as often as possible. 6
Greetings to all. Once more into the gap. Another year, a new Potentate and renewed hope for an
active and involving year. If we all work together, we can begin a new era of progress and growth for Sahib. Lets all vow to join in support of our Potentate and Divan as they begin their new offices.
For your information, I am publishing a brief summary of the funding of the FEZtival of Trees income from all sources. A complete report is available on request. Income - $16,800; Expenses - $7,204; Net Profit - $9,596. Not bad for the first time out and no cost to Sahib.
Ill. Sir Connie Jacobi has approved the FEZtival of Trees for 2015 and we are currently building a team to make it happen. At this point, many of our tree contributors have signed on and we have most of our
craft tables signed up. My goal for this year is 40 trees and $20,000! We have discussed our plusses and minuses as we have met as a committee and we are adjusting our approach to correct these areas of weakness. I will need your support to pull it all together in November.
I will be working closely with Ill. Sir Connie this year and look forward to a well organized, planned and carried out program in all areas of Sahib needs. Our new Divan members are getting their feet wet with assignments in all areas of our operations. I know they will be a credit to you and Sahib.
Ill. Sir Connie Jacobi has planned a number of fun activities that should please all members of Sahib and I urge you to join in the fun! Enough for now. I will keep you posted as the year progresses. If I can help, give me a call at (941) 488 4363. 6

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Bill Balkwill, [email protected]
It is an honor to be your Assistant Rabban for 2015. Remember nobles we are all in this together. If there
is anything I can do during this year, please let me know and I will try to help in any way that I can. We must work together and make Sahib Shriners bigger and better for 2015. With Ill. Sir Connie Jacobi at the helm, I see some exciting and new beginnings for us.
February will be a very busy month. Pancake Breakfast, Potentate’s Ball, Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance along with Groundhog Day, Valentine’s
Day (nobles do not forget this one) and Presidents Day.
We need everyone’s support for the 33rd Annual Shrine Golf Tournament at Bobby Jones Golf Club on April 4. We will need door prizes, hole/cart sponsors and volunteers along with golfers. Let us all make this a big fundraiser for the Shrine. Contact Tom Cunningham, John Sholtis, Ed Firquin or myself. Let us have some fun! Remember support the Shrine and keep a child in your heart. 6

It is February already. The Potentate’s Ball is only days away. However, we are also only two weeks from
Valentine’s Day. Did you know that St. Valentine’s Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named “Saint Valentine” Valentinus? Moreover, that the day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. Not until 18th-century England, did it evolve into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery and sending greeting cards. Actually, I have another way for you to express love for your sweetie, but I will get to that in a few paragraphs. You knew this was coming, didn’t you? First, some recent Motor Corps news.
First, we can report on our Motor Corps Member of the Year for 2014. The recipient of this year’s award is now Past President Scott Steelman (Gray Fox). He was recognized for this honor at our annual Holiday Party in December. Scott is a Pennsylvania native, having been born to a prominent funeral director in Honesdale. After graduating from Wilkes College, he joined the U.S. Army where he served in the Infantry and the Military Police. He retired after thirty-one years with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Scott then accepted a position as Supervisor of Budgeting and Accounting at the National Drug Intelligence Center where he met his wife Joni. He is a member of Venice Lodge No. 301 where he currently serves as Junior Warden.
He is also a member of the Tampa Scottish Rite and a Past President of the Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association. He has two sons, Scott and Jeffrey. When you see “Gray Fox” extend your congratulations to him for this well-deserved honor.
There were several other presentations to our members at the Holiday Party. In addition to his honor as Member of the Year, Scott also received his Past President’s Plaque. Wally Lacey (Red Dog), who is stepping down from his position of Treasurer of the Motor Corps for the past 12 years received a plaque for his loyal and devoted service. Incoming President Dave Bell (Jetfoot) was presented a membership in the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels by Kosair’s Past Potentate Gary Fields (JP) who is also a member of the Sahib Motor Corps.
On New Year’s Eve Day, the Motor Corps along with several members of the Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association said goodbye to 2014 by holding the Second Annual Steve Weatherly Memorial Ride. The route to Sebring was planned by Road Captain Eric Bock (Speedtriple). Twenty riders and six passengers made the nearly 200-mile trip in overcast weather.
The Installation of 2015 Shrine Divan, Unit and Club Officers was held on Friday night, January 2. The Motor Corps was represented with the following officers being installed: President Dave Bell (Jetfoot) and Secretary Giles Light (G-man). Motor Corps member Ken Shipley (Doc) was installed as Sahib Treasurer for 2015.

How is this for an opener? I think it makes sense. “I thought a thought. However, the thought I thought
was not the thought I thought I thought. If the thought I thought I thought had been the thought I thought, I would not have thought so much.” If this does make sense to you then you are seriously in need of help!
Your Scribe has been out of town for two weeks so some information may not be included and this article may be somewhat shorter than usual. Do I hear cheering?
The Holidays have come and gone once again. North Port Shrine Club hopes all had very happy, healthy and safe celebrations. Next up will be Valentine’s Day. I hope for the sake of all nobles that you have procured the appropriate words of “amore” for your lady.
Our North Port Shrine Club Christmas Party on December 14 at Plantation Golf and Country Club was a smashing success. Beautiful venue, excellent food, beverages and entertainment by Bill Millner. All thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Kudos to newly elected North Port Shrine Club President Bob Somerville arranger and MC. Soon to be, Past Potentate Rocky Kearney was presented with an honorary membership in North Port Shrine Club. Noble B. John Ross was presented the Masonic Lifetime Award and he celebrated his 92nd birthday.
Not all news is good; some of our folks are ailing. Lady Betty Hamilton, Noble Larry Hedmark and Noble Joe Harrington are in our thoughts and we pray they will soon be back with us.
Incentive program: December 2 - Chris Depass, December 9 - Bill Long, December 16 - Dwight Ridgeway, December 23 - Bill Batten, non-winners. Each week
with no winners makes the pot bigger. Our incentive conductor Jack Watson is looking for a volunteer to take his place, not everyone jump up at once. By the way, did you notice Jack’s bandaged finger? At who or what was he pointing? Obviously someone or something that did not take kindly to being the pointee.
Still no new evidence has surfaced regarding the missing banner. Where is Sherlock Holmes when you need him? Somebody has to know something!
A hearty North Port Shrine Club welcome to new member Cliff Nicodemis, a retired PA, State Police Officer and member of Jaffe Shrine, Altoona, Pennsylvania. Congratulations to our member Mike Tirpak, W.M. - elect of North Port Masonic Lodge #406.
(Bits and Pieces) Really hungary? A London restaurant offers what it claims is the most expensive burger. The “Glamburger” is made with venison from New Zealand, Kobe beef, topped with Iranian saffron ($250 per ounce), white truffle from Italy ($1,500 per pound) Russian Beluga caviar ($3,000 per pound) and finished with a 24-karat gold leaf. Yours for a mere $1,800 each.
(Quotable Notable) As of this writing, no one identified Julia Child who said, “The only time to eat diet food is while you are waiting for the steak to cook.” For March guess who said “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” The first non-member who correctly names this notable and responds to the above email or calls (941) 426-0743 will receive a breakfast for two as guests of the North Port Shrine Club. 6

SHRINE UNIT NEWS
The New Year’s celebrations have come and gone, but the Clowns Unit would like to send best wishes
to our newly elected Divan and especially to our new Potentate Connie Jacobi for 2015 and beyond. In addition, we want to say thanks to our Past Potentate, Rocky Kearney, for a job well done for his leadership in 2014. The clowns had a very busy November and December starting with the Venice Christmas Parade on November 29. The Sarasota Christmas Parade was the next Saturday and the spectators lined the streets, sometimes six and seven deep, with lots of excited children waiting to see Santa. Of course, the clowns provided many laughs for the young and the old to help
the mood of excitement. Not to be out done, the North Port Parade was soon to follow with many people lining the streets excited about the season and the clowns with their bag of tricks were well received showing their Christmas spirit. Each year for the past twenty-eight years the clowns have participated in the “Flight to the North Pole” for area handicap children. It is a day of activities of all types for the children to view and participate. Of course, the clowns are there each year to help provide a few laughs and bring some smiles to these very grateful children. After pictures, face painting, HD hammer projects, pony rides, eating and here comes Santa

Kentucky Colonelsby Col. Robert L. (Bob) Rodd, President, [email protected]
I do not know about you but to me each year it seems like the year is going by faster than the prior year. We
hope all that attended our January get-together enjoyed being back at the Tara Golf and Country Club after their months of renovations. We will be at Tara Golf and Country Club for most of our upcoming monthly get-togethers, which take place the 4th Tuesday of the month from September through May. However, our March get-together will be at a different location. I will let you know later where that will take place. Officers for 2015 are:President Colonel Bob Rodd (Kathy) (941)776-0937Vice President Colonel James “Jim” Fleming (Donna) (414)350-6061Secretary Colonel Charles “Bud” Glidden (Carole) (941)358-2285Treasurer Colonel Donald “Don” Clements (Mary) (941)755-3655Chaplain Colonel David Hauraney (Shirley) (941)750-6823 We would be very happy to have more of our current
Kentucky Colonels come to our monthly get-togethers. I know a few have some situations that prevent that and we appreciate that you still pay your dues and like to know what the unit is doing. If the reason you do not come is that of transportation issues, please let one of the officers know and we will try to remedy that. If you are a member of Sahib Temple and not yet a Kentucky Colonel please give me a call and come to one of our get-togethers. We only meet once a month, usually on the evening of the 4th Tuesday. For those of you who are already members of the Kentucky Colonels kindly think about your fellow Shriners. Be they from Sahib or elsewhere, be they residents of Florida or snowbirds and you believe they would be a great Kentucky Colonel and enjoy an evening of fun, good food, wonderful fellowship and superb entertainment. Be sure to invite them to join our festivities. That could be one of the reasons for joining Sahib. If you would like more information, please call (941)776-0937 or email me, or any of the other officers. Look forward to having you with us soon. 6

Proper Flag Retirement. Most Sahib nobles and their families know that the Sahib Legion of Honor has
for many years now had an ongoing project to accept USA flags and State/Military flags for proper retirement when your friend is torn, ripped or faded. But what happens to your old friend after you have dropped him off at Sahib Shrine Temple? Where does he go? What happens to him? How is he retired? We currently work with a group of South County funeral homes who accept such flags and own their own crematorium. Your flag to be retired is driven by me personally weekly to a collection point in Englewood, Florida and they transport your flag to North Port and their crematorium. Sahib Shrine is now known as a major contributor to their ongoing good work. Your flag will only be draped over the container of either an honorably discharged or an honorably retired male or female soldier of any of the USA’s five
military services or of an Allied Military Force. Your flag will join many other flags to completely cover the (normally heavy-duty cardboard box) of the (normally) not embalmed soldier. Your flag will cover and guard your unknown soldier in flames and temperatures of 1,400F to 2,100F degrees and depending on the weight of the soldier, the process usually takes ninety minutes to two hours, with larger bodies taking longer time. When all is said and done, your old friend will still be guarding the ashes of the soldier and will weigh approximately four pounds for an adult female soldier and six pounds for an adult male soldier. When the ashes of the cremated soldier are returned to the next-of-kin, your flag has been properly and legally retired and your flag will forever guard the ashes of an unknown soldier in honored rest and glory. Now you know! 6

Oriental Bandby Jim Austin, [email protected]
I have finally figured it out. What you ask? Why we have about half of our little band of musicians either
from Germany direct or of German descent. Why, it is our love of beautiful music of course! Where else would you go to join, when all the great music is provided only by this group? Still, we have room for a few more great musicians. Come join our happy throng as we go into the New Year.
The Oriental Band has voted to abandon the old uniforms and go in another direction. We will no longer be Arabs but Chinese peasants starting the next time we perform for anyone. We are currently going through our options for dress uniforms and decorations for our float.
Our subject for this month is that great drummer, Richard Kramss. He was born in 1928 in Hanover, Germany. His father was a treasurer for Standard Oil. The family was transferred to Koenigsberg in 1936, and then moved to Cranz on the Baltic Sea. This is where he was captured by the Russians in 1945 and then was
sent to Siberia by train. It was summer and he was put to work in a coalmine. The Russians sent him to the gulag at Chelyabinsk to work as a machinist after a huge loss of life from typhoid fever in the Siberia camp. He estimates that about half of the population of that camp died that summer.
He worked in the Hanover area as a machinist for a while and then tried his hand at the Border Police. He applied for immigration here in 1956 and was accepted. He left Bremen aboard a liberty ship being used as a passenger vessel. They had a reputation as being rather flimsy so sure enough, a big storm came up and everyone thought they would not make it here, but they did, anchoring in Stamford, Connecticut. Tried a new job in sheet metal fabrication and rose to supervision while working at this for about twenty years. He married Erika in 1957 and moved to the beach here in 1992. As mentioned earlier, he joined the Oriental Band in 2006 and is helping in producing beautiful music wherever we go. Hoping all is well with you and yours.6

High Priest & Prophet’s notesby Rev. Noble Dorè Patlian, [email protected]
I want to express my appreciation to the nobility for electing me your High Priest and Prophet for 2015.
Being elevated to the Divan is the fulfillment of a dream and I do thank you all. Membership is a major focus of my role this year but I cannot do it without your active assistance. Each noble must become the de facto membership chairman in his neighborhood or community. You are the eyes and ears of Sahib in the greater Sarasota/Manatee area and Sahib will be depending on you to ask your friends and acquaintances who are good men and true to become Shrine Masons. Make sure you have petitions with you in the car and in your home so that you can offer one to a friend or neighbor whom you feel would be a credit to the Craft, to Shrinedom and to Sahib in particular. That which is not growing is dying. Sahib is not dying, we ended net even in membership for 2014 but we are not growing. The Greatest Generation, to which so many of our family proudly belong, (those who grew
up in the depression and fought WW II) one by one are being called Home to gather around the Trestle Board of the Great Architect in the Celestial Lodge. These nobles and Brethren made Shriners International the great fraternal and philanthropic organization that is known around the world and has become the “public face of Freemasonry.” We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude. We continue to need their counsel and talents. Their work must continue for the children and for the perpetuation of the Craft in all its branches. Now the Boomers and the generations behind us must take up the baton and run the race. We can do it. I see in my mind a significant net gain for Sahib in 2015 and since everything that exists began in a mind, the Architect’s, or ours, it will happen with your help. See me or email me for petitions and let us get started! Are you on board? 6

Oriental Guide’s notesby Dell Hyland, [email protected]
As 2014 comes to a close, we reflect back at the year that has so quickly come and gone. We remember
all the joys and sorrows throughout the year and wonder where the time went. I hope that you had a great year and we now look to 2015. I want to first thank all the nobles for electing me as Oriental Guide as it is a great honor for Lady Sandra and me. It is going to be an honor to serve the nobility at Sahib Temple and the children in our hospitals. We look for many new and exciting things to happen in the upcoming year, as well as ensuring that the old ways always remain. I think that it is going to be a great year here at Sahib and look forward to serving in any way that I can. I also want to thank Noble Frank Albertson for nominating me. As we look to 2015 and the end of a great year by Potentate Rocky Kearney and his Lady Wendy, it will
be a tough act to follow. We want to thank Potentate Rocky and Lady Wendy for a great year and all your guidance. As we transition to Potentate Connie Jacobi and Lady Deanie, we will take the challenges of 2015 head on. We are looking forward to a great year and a major focus on growth and helping the hospitals and the children. I think you will continue to see some pleasant changes as the facelift on the grounds continues. I look forward to getting to know all of you more over the next year and please feel free to ask me anything. If I do not know, I will find out and we can learn together. I hope that I can be an asset here at Sahib and look forward to a great year. Lady Sandra and I want to again thank you for electing me. In addition, we want to thank all those for their time spent to help make Sahib what it is. Let us have a great year!6

at heart the romance is just sweet and November is a banner month at Sarasota Memorial Maternity!
May we remember that love is our most noble and magnificent emotion. It takes us out of ourselves and raises our consciousness to higher things. We give just for the joy of giving. We love without keeping books and expecting return. We become our higher selves, the people we were born to become.
May the Great Architect bless you and keep you warm, happy and safe all the days of your life!
Do not miss the Lobsterfest on Valentine’s Day, February 14. If you like love, or love lobster, you do not want to miss this! Get your reservations at the box office now. 6
Ô . . .continued from page 13Motor Corps
The Motor Corps is currently selling raffle tickets on its booze wagon. Winning ticket gets the recipient a Harley Davidson wagon full of top-shelf liquor. Tickets are for sale at selected Shrine events. Drawing is Sunday, March 2 at the Pancake Breakfast.
Now, as to how you can show your love for your sweetie. How about taking her to the Motor Corps Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, February 15 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $11 at the door. We are expecting a big turnout, but are prepared to serve everyone. This is an all you can eat spaghetti and meatballs, our famous Italian salad, dinner rolls and wine. Wally Lacey (Red Dog) will once again be directing this year’s performance so do not miss this event. How many of you were planning to take your lady out for dinner with wine on that day anyhow?
Sahib Marshal Ron Enger has indicated he is looking forward to the Motor Corps participating in as many parades this year
as possible. Historically, the first parade of the year is the annual Arcadia Rodeo Parade. The date for this year’s parade is Saturday, March 14. If Sahib Shrine participates, we expect to have a good representation from the Motor Corps, even if the ride over and back is longer than the parade!
This article would not be complete without recognizing our members who have birthdays and anniversaries in February. We have seven members and ladies with birthdays this month: Lady Beverly Brown and Gary Fields (JP) on the 2nd, Al Dahlberg (Big Al) on the 4th, Lady Nicole Crimi on the 11th, Lady Rita Bell (Sweet Pea) and Giles Light (G-man) on the 16th and Steve Helin (Varmint) on the 25th. We have three anniversaries this month: Al Dahlberg (Big Al) and Lady Jan on the 2nd, Ken Shipley (Doc) and Lady Beatty on the 24th, Norm Cyphers (Stormin Norm) and Lady Amanda on the 26th. 6

arriving with his helicopter. Then there is real excitement as Santa gives high-fives and prepares to give out presents to each of the children. The program is held at the airport fire station and sponsored by the Manatee Sheriff Association. It should be noted, that before 9/11 all of the participants actually took an airplane ride thinking that they were going to the North Pole. On December 21, the clowns closed their year in high fashion at their Christmas Party held at Heritage Oaks Country Club. During happy hour, the clowns and their guests were provided the opportunity to talk about happenings in 2014 and to view a display of the clowns’ past year books, previous pictures, old Ringling programs (one had a picture of a guest) and awards. The display was planned and set up by Butch “Sparky” Power. Speaking of guest, we had Gary Schweinshaupt Editor Emeritus and Lady Bobbi, Ringling Clowns, Karen Bell, Robin Eurich, Jackie Le Claire and Chuck Sidlow. Each of the clowns have a history
of clowning accomplishments that could fill a book. It should be noted that Karen and Robin work with our clowns as we prepare for the Shrine Circus. Each year we are entertained by our very own Faino Blevins and what a great job he did. He kept us clapping, singing and laughing with his country guitar and jokes. Do not ask Fanio what happened to his red nose! We could not close this party section without showing our appreciation to our clowns’ widows that mean so much to our unit and their attendance. Attending this year were Bessie Mitchell, Eileen Mackenzie, Hobbie Trefrey, Barbara Raesly, Jean Courtney, Peggy Cloutier and Terry Strickland. As we close 2014, we give thanks to our Boss Clown Ian Grant for a job well done. We look forward to our newly elected Boss Clown Rick Taylor for new and bigger things for 2015. He will give us leadership for our first scheduled project, which will be the Paper Drive. Until we meet again, remember the children. 6

Ladies and nobles, I want to share with you all two very special occasions, which I had the privilege
of being involved. My first experience happened on December 17 when I had the honor of giving the obligation to a candidate who was in a rehabilitation facility. Judy Olson was to be brought into our Order at our November Ceremonial. She was unable to be initiated as she was admitted into the hospital. You can imagine her disappointment at not being able to be at the Ceremonial in which she would become a Daughter of the Nile. It was voted at our Supreme Session that in special circumstances that the Obligation to enter our Order may be given to the elected candidate. After Judy took the obligation, she commented to us that she had received the most beautiful Christmas gift. When I asked what it was, she stated, “I became a Daughter of the Nile today.” As you can imagine, there was not a dry eye in the room.
My second privilege was to deliver five large storage bags and one large box of toys to the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Tampa on December 23. There were so many children being processed through the outpatient area this day. A presentation was made to the Development Director of the Hospital, Alycia Argiz-
Lyons, with a very special patient at my side. Cameron was so happy to be with a lady who had so many toys with her and was wearing a fairy princess crown. After several photos, Cameron chose his special toy (a blue truck) that he would be able to take home. His smile just brought happy tears to all of us. His mom could not thank us enough for the help we have given by our donations from the Daughters of the Nile.
Through our help and that of so many Shriners, it has made it possible for Cameron to receive the much-needed treatment to enable him to walk. My year as Queen is coming to a close, I have so many beautiful memories of my year in office but I will remember these two forever.
Ladies and nobles, Daughters of the Nile is a Masonic related organization for women. We are dedicated to the children of the Shriners Hospitals and to supporting our nobles. Not a Daughter of the Nile yet? How about taking the step toward our organization. I include the nobles as they can encourage their ladies to join us. I have a petition in my handbag so give me the opportunity to complete it with your lady’s name. Let us work together for the children. 6
Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America started the New Year welcoming two new members to the class
of Graceful Swans. We are proud to have these ladies join in our goal of supporting the Shriners Hospitals for Children and our Sahib Shrine organization. Our ladies enjoy working in many ways to meet this goal through L.O.S. and the other groups that share our objectives.
Our annual Fashion Show will be on Valentine’s
Day, Saturday. February 14. Kay Neary has done a wonderful job of organizing the event. It will be held at Tara Country Club where a delicious luncheon will be followed by the showing of fashions from Damon’s and Draper’s Department Store.
I love this quote from Ophra Winfrey, “I define joy as a sustained sense of well-being and internal peace – a connection to what matters.” 6

Albert Pike’s lecture for the Fourth Degree, Secret Master, is a good follow-up to the theme of the Fellow
Craft Lecture. It discusses our duty to continuously learn and educate ourselves. In the Fifth Degree, Perfect Master, Pike advises us “to sleep little and to study much, to hear and to think much.” In addition, in the Fifteenth Degree, Pike tells us “knowledge is the most permanent wealth. Let thy books be thy best friends.” Ah, books and reading - in and around our commitments to our necessary vocations, families, spiritual and civic lives, not to mention numerous Masonic functions, we probably need to read more; to read the great books, to “take counsel with wise men,” as Pike counseled. What constitutes a great book? The late Professor J. Rufus Fears suggests great books challenge us to make value judgments. They have three characteristics: (1) they are concerned with themes and issues of enduring importance. (2) They are written in a noble language, a style that elevates the soul and simulates the mind. (3) They are universal, addressing the values and ideas of one age and transmitting a legacy to future generations. Great books endeavor, by conscious choice or omission, to provide guidance for one of four basic
concerns in life. First, what is the nature of the Divine and our relationship with Him? Secondly, why do things happen? Are we “victims of fate?” Is life predetermined or do we have the ability and free will to affect events? Thirdly, a great book will address questions of good and evil, right and wrong, morality and relativism, virtue and vice. Finally, we learn from great books how to live, individually and as members of society. Great books teach us about duty, virtue, good conduct, morality and responsibility. A book that helps address one of these enduring questions, in a noble language, will speak timelessly across multiple generations. Such books we call “great.” They are worthy of our attention. The themes of many great books have found their way into the ritual of the Blue Lodge and Scottish Rite. The great books of Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Dante, Burke, Kant, Milton, Tennyson, Plotinus, Plutarch and Homer appear in those theatrical productions we call degrees. Notably, perhaps the greatest book, the Volume of Sacred Law, provides the founding legend of our fraternity. We can learn a lot from our degree work, but we all could read more. Great books? Our best friends can teach us a lot.
Masonic Digest
The month of December was a very busy one. The Florida Masonic State Association held their 52nd
Annual Convention. We inducted two new members Bill Dunning and Jim Fleming into our club. Learned from Brother Phil Billard a lot about collecting coins and paper money from around the world. Held our monthly auction and more. We also elected and installed our 2015 club officers. There is much coming up in January of 2015 but as I am writing this on December 29 of 2014, I cannot tell you all what took place but I can just about guarantee you would have enjoyed what took place. If you are already a member bring another Master Mason and his lady, if he has one, and let them see the enjoyment and fellowship that takes place. If you are not a High Twelve yet and would like to be part of Cortez Masonic High Twelve Club No. 538, please come. If you are a Master Mason, that makes you eligible to be a member of High Twelve. Also, please know that your lady is always invited to come with you. In addition, if a widow of a former Hi-12 member would like to attend she is most welcome. Also, you may bring your friends and relatives to visit with us, whether a Mason or not and maybe that will help prompt them to
join our great fraternity. Come, meet our members and see whom you already know as well as see new friends that you will be making. Several of our members come down for the winter from Canada. We meet most Mondays from November through April at Duff’s Original Buffet. Located at 6010 14th Street (Route 41) at the corner of Route 41 and 60th Avenue West in Bradenton, Florida. Arrival time is between 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to socialize. Then we eat at 11:00 a.m., while continuing to socialize and then start the rest of the day’s program around 11:45 noon. We usually finish between 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. depending on what we are doing for the day. As we mainly are a social organization, there is no ritual to learn but we definitely have a purpose, in fact several. We support the three Masonic youth groups (DeMolay for boys, Rainbow Girls and Job’s Daughters for girls). We also support the Florida Masonic Home in St. Petersburg, Florida. Our main philanthropy is the Wolcott Foundation that supports graduate students who attend the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and go into government service. Come and learn more about this great program. 6

beashrinernow.com continues to attract quality candidates. To date, more than 1,200 men have inquired about Freemasonry or becoming a Shriner. While the numbers of those interested are impressive, we really need more mentors to ensure candidates receive the attention they need and deserve. Consider joining the more than 1,150 Shriners who are already virtual mentors.
As a virtual mentor, you will be paired with a candidate in your area who has similar interests. Communicating by phone, email or in person, you will have the opportunity to share your knowledge and enthusiasm about Masonry and about being a Shriner. You will answer questions or concerns, help find the Lodge best suited to the candidate’s interests, and help him with his journey to become a Shriner. You will also have the opportunity to make a new friend.

Donor Relationsby Robert L. (Bob) Rodd, Chairman, [email protected]
I want you all to know what an honor it is to be the Donor Relations Chairman of Sahib Temple having
a hand in raising funds for the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Tampa. As for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, I personally feel we, as Shriners, family members of Shriners, Master Masons, their families and friends as well as the businesses and merchants we do business with should be offered the opportunity to help our children. When I say our, I mean that all Shriner children are “our” children so we take care of the needs they have. Remember that regardless of the patients’ or their families’ ability to pay, Shriners Hospitals for Children will treat a child if it is something we do, such as orthopedic, burns, spinal, cleft palate, etc. Since I took over the Sahib Plaque Program, about three years ago, 56 Plaques have been issued and over
that time between $9,000 and $10,000 has been raised. Some of those plaques were started by businesses and some by our nobles, their ladies, Masonic organizations, etc. Some were in memory of a loved one or someone they wanted to honor with a Plaque knowing the funds received would be helping our Shriner children. Remember donations are fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Get a Plaque started today by completing the form below, attach check and mail. Make checks payable to Shriners Hospitals for Children -Tampa and give it to me or drop it off at the Sahib Office. You can also send it to Sahib Temple, c/o Noble Robert L. (Bob) Rodd, Donor Relations Chairman, 600 N. Beneva Road, Sarasota, FL 34232 or mail it directly to me at my home address at 12527 25th Court East, Parrish, FL 34219. As most of you know, many businesses have some kind of collection boxes on their counters, so why not one of ours?
Call the Sahib Office at 366-4449if you can arrange a placement.

MARCH
The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum
pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of August 31, 2014, they have collected 101,525 lbs., for a total of $53,232.02 for the Shriners
Hospital for Children in Tampa.
Call: Laura Burgess (941) 758-9196 or Marylou Ellis (941) 484-0089 or Chickie Johnson (941) 966-2678 or Connie Lawson (941) 758-8274 or
Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun!Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS
1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib.
2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds
worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are
delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit loca-tion) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children.
