I m very excited to serve as your 2019 WSH President. For those that do not know me, my name is Emma McLaughlin and I am the daughter of Dale and Jessie McLaughlin from the Northeast Zone. I have been a member since birth riding in the Games Division and most recently, my mount includes a super -cute registered Paint named Truly a Autograph a.k.a. Paisley that I co-own with my grandmother, Sharon Kelsey. I served as the 2017 WSH Queen and in 2018 was asked to oversee the royalty pro- gram. I grew up in the Youth Merit program and had the opportunity to deliver speeches from 2006 to 2015, also receiving several high point awards throughout my tenure. I am a music education stu- dent at Eastern Washington University after graduating from SFCC this past year. As a reminder...Memberships are due now. Please reach out to your club secretary (if you have not already) to renew your membership. If you are not part of a club, the membership forms for non-club are available on the WSH website. From Division Director, Lisa Gardner, “Happy New Year! Convention was busy and successful . We

have several new Ranch Riding classes. These classes were well attended on the east side and at the

Camp Bow Wow Show. I am excited to see a new set of classes being offered. The Working Rancher

count for your English RO M. The new WSH YEA signup form will be going to the web page and

GAMES DIVISION

From Division Director, Melissa Stockman, “It’s been an interesting few weeks but 2019 is

quickly approaching and with it, the hopes of a great year. Show dates will be coming in soon

so watch for them to get them onto your calendars. This year’s officers are Melissa Stockman

(Director), Kimberlee McCoul (East Vice), Mike Rickert (West Vice), Jessie McLaughlin

(Secretary), Jodie Field (Treasurer) and Tracy Crotsley (Times Keeper). Additionally, the Rules

Committee is made up of Tracy Crotsley (Chair), Sue Dillman, Scott Howe, and Sharon Kelsey

(Alternate). THANK YOU to each of you for your continued support of our Division.

We can’t offer the fantastic awards we offer each year for the Washington State Championship

Show without the help of our members reaching out to find sponsors. The 2019 form should be

up on the WSH website in the next week or so. Please begin your search now so that we can

begin thanking these sponsors early!

Judges and Timers - If you are looking to renew your cards (although they are good until March

31 with a 2019 WSH membership) please text a request to 509.434.4555. We need each and

every official to help make our shows (and our season) successful. A 2019 WSH membership is

required in order to update your official’s card.

Remember that WSHGD was the original tiered (4D) system with room for everyone to ride and

achieve their own personal goals. Invite your friends to join us this year and let’s make 2019 an

even bigger year! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at stockmansad-

[email protected] or via phone at 509.220.9099. I am looking forward to a great year with you.”

DRESSAGE

Congratulations to one and all - to those whose names are on the "winners list" and to those of you who rode the good ride with all the expenditures of time, money, and energy that it involves. I hope that your participation has been a good experience and that you are looking forward to competing in 2019.

Those riders who belong to the Lower Puget Sound Dressage Club will be presented their WSH awards at their annual awards banquet on February 2nd at the Canterwood Golf and Country Club. LPSDC members voted to become their own GMO. They will no longer be a Chapter of the Oregon Dressage Society. LPSDC is planning to host a series of clinics this spring. Clini-cians will include Jen Verharen, Joan Darnell, and Debra Spence.

Director Bonnie Schuchman reported

the following information from the

ABRA Convention -

In 2019, points may be searchable

online if we can obtain and implement

the program required on the website.

Currently judges can be searched by

State, affiliation, etc. and that is a pre-

view of what is to come in the future for

our members.

A new division was added in 2018 to

become effective in 2019 allowing older

children to remain in walk trot classes if

they are not yet comfortable loping in

the ring. Walk Trot 11-18 will mirror

Amateur Walk Trot classes and rules.

We realize that not everyone grows up

riding horses so to require a beginner at

age 12 to lope in order to show is too

restrictive and this should help charter

clubs attract more riders to their shows.

It was suggested that ABRA eliminate

its white rule as some other registries

have done so, but our mission to uphold

the integrity of the buckskin color and

pedigrees on record would be vulnera-

ble to devaluation and we cannot see a

good reason to abolish our rules on

white hair at this time. White is the

absence of color, not the addition of

color and we are a color breed.

Green division will be added to all

ranch classes following the same crite-

ria as any other Green clas.

An additional day has been added to the

World Show format for 2019 as growth

in the mules and ponies division has

been well received.

The buckskin bred program will imple-

ment the qualification extending to the

granddam or grandsire, this will also

make all buckskin bred registered hors-

es eligible for the Color Breed NSBA

classes including Color Breeders Futuri-

ties.

Positive growth and progress continue

to flourish with a progressive board of

directions.

SHOW GROOMING FOR HORSE AND RIDER BY KATHY NORTON

First, let us remember that it is a HORSE show, not a fashion runway. By that I mean, it is the performance of your horse (or you, if it is Equitation or Showmanship) that we are trying to watch and judge. This is very difficult to do when we are blinded by the amount of rhinestones and glitter on your clothing and tack. There is not a thing wrong with wanting to be noticed, and in fact, your tack and attire are responsible for that to a certain extent. However, it is your horse’s performance (or yours) that we are trying to evaluate, not the amount of bling you can afford.

Start with cleanliness—you and your animal should be clean and not dusty, sweaty, dirty, etc. We understand that after a long day of showing, you are going to be all of those things, but don’t go into the ring for your first class looking like both of you just got out of bed! That means your horse should be freshly bathed and brushed, all straw or shavings removed from mane and tail, hooves polished (or at least clean), nose wiped, and any gloss or shine applied with SUBTLETY. It’s not necessary to have the face oil drip-ping to be effective. If you band your horse’s mane, make sure the sections are of equal size and the rubber bands are tight. If you use a fake tail extension, please be sure it is attached firmly and invisibly. If you are braiding for a hunter class, either a French braid in the mane or a braided tail, make sure the braid is tight, neat, and securely fastened. If you cannot manage to make it look neat, then skip it. You will look much better just going natural. Be aware of your breed rules. Arabians are NOT allowed to use any grooming materials that alter the natural color of coat, mane and tail or hooves. They are also not allowed to use any “artificial appliances”. This means NO rubber bands in the mane or forelock EXCEPT in hunter or Show Hack classes, and NO artificial tails at any time. You may use hoof polish, but you may not alter the natural color of the hoof. That means if your horse has white feet, you must use clear hoof polish. If they have a black or partially black hoof, you may use black or brown ONLY on the black or brown area of the hoof. You may NOT use cornstarch or other substances to whiten socks or other white areas on the coat. Only clear grooming materials of any kind are allowed. Please do not use body glitter, no matter how cool you think it looks on the coat or the hooves.

All right, now that your horse is bathed, brushed, and groomed to natural brilliance, don’t forget your tack. Silver is nice but never required. Clean, polished tack even without silver is always preferable to dull, dirty silver and leather no matter how much you have. Tack gets dusty just like people and horses and it’s a good idea to keep a rag handy for wiping it off a few times during the day. Polar fleece works well for this as it has a nice nap that gets into the cracks and tooling. Clean your tack before every show! It will last longer, require less effort, and extend the life. Tack today is a major investment for many and it only makes sense to take care of it. Your horse will thank you also. Who wants to wear sweaty, dirty tack? Wipe down the insides of your headstalls and reins with a damp cloth and then a lightly oiled rag at the end of the day. Hang your blankets and under pads or English pads in the open to dry and brush off the accumulated dirt and sweat from the bottoms. This goes for girths and cinches too. Sweat and dirt will rot your leather or fabric and dirty fleece can cause galls. Neoprene is great—just hose it down and let it dry. Wipe the dried slobber off your bits and chinstraps or chains, and the reins at the attachment points.

Finally yet importantly, we come to personal grooming and attire. Different breeds and different riding disciplines all have differ-ent requirements. Be aware of the rules and plan your outfits accordingly. For Saddle Seat English classes, a saddle suit is re-quired. Day coats are allowed in most classes as well, but pick colors that flatter you and your horse and be sure it fits correctly. Make sure that your tie is neatly tied and that your collar lies flat and covers the tie at the back of the neck. A collar bar or button-down style is the most practical. Many people choose to wear short-sleeved shirts because they are cooler but if you are allowed to ride without jackets due to weather conditions, you must have long sleeves. Long sleeves also give a more finished look and make it easier to slip into or out of said jacket. Pin the bottom edges of the jacket back over your leg to show off the lining and to keep the skirts out of your way when posting. Wipe your boots and be sure your under-heel jod straps are down and fastened. Your hair should be in a bun with a hair net—short hair is fine if it is neat. PIN YOUR HAT on. The large oversized bobby pins work well. DO wear some kind of makeup, both for sun and wind protection and to complete the picture. At the very least, wear lipstick and a little blush. Remember that the judge is going to be looking at you from a distance and your face is going to be little more than a blur. Try to make it an attractive blur. Keep your jewelry subtle. Stud earrings in silver, gold, or small jewels look nice.

Hunter Seat classes have gotten bolder over the years but understated will never go out of style. Under NO circumstances are black, navy, burgundy or patterned breeches appropriate or legal. (I have seen all of these more than once.) Stick with the classics. The lighter brown/tan/sand colors look nice with most color of horses and jackets. Hunter is still very conservative compared to the other disciplines so skip the bling on your clothes. Many people wear dickies under their jackets but again, if you ride without a jacket you must have a long-sleeved shirt. Your jewelry should be small and not distracting. Again, makeup is a good idea but not as dramatic as saddle seat. Tall boots make up most of your picture so be sure they are clean and dust/mud free. Again, be sure your tack is clean and dust free and oiled/conditioned. If you use a pad with number slots, wipe them down so they are not clouded or dusty. Again, clean the dust and dirt off the bottom and set the pad somewhere it can dry at the end of the day. A dressage pad is NEVER appropriate for hunter classes!

The Western division has the most color and style and the widest range of both. Once again, cleanliness should be your number one priority. A little bling goes a long way, so please do not feel the need to dress like your are going to a Hollywood premiere. (I have seen a lot less bling in red carpet photos than some show outfits!). The most important part of your outfit should be the color and style. Both should flatter both you and your horse—then you can start adding some tasteful accents. Always keep in mind that we as judges are trying to see your horse and your body position in eq and this can be very difficult when we are blinded by a literal ton of jewels and overdone designs on your clothing. Too much bling is very distracting and unnecessary.

Horse showing is fun. Why else would we be out there in all kinds of weather riding around in circles? It’s not necessary to take out a second mortgage on your house to afford nice clothes and tack. Do your homework and train your horse at home. Let his awesome movement and transitions make that essential impression. A gorgeous outfit can accent great performance but it will only draw unwanted attention to a bad mover or sloppy horsemanship.

To sum up, it is nice to have pretty clothes and fancy tack but all of that is wasted on a poorly groomed horse and rider. Save the elaborate stuff for important occasions and a horse and rider who are ready to shine no matter how they are dressed! If you know your horse can wow the judge in a plain shirt and jeans and work tack, THEN go ahead and add some bling.

Join Washington State Horsemen for 2019 and then contact your Zone Youth Merit Advisor and they can help you get started. If your Zone does not have an appointed Youth Merit Advisor, please contact (depending on which side of the mountains you live on) one of the following:

East Side - Jessie McLaughlin / 509.434.4555 / [email protected] West Side - Cheryl Hayward / 360.280.4933

We would like to thank Jane Rodriguez for her work as West Side Chair over the past couple of years. We will miss her help in Youth Merit but look forward to seeing her in other roles on the Zone and State level. Thank you, again, Jane! Cheryl Hayward has agreed to serve in the role and her name will be submitted to the WSH Board in January for ratification. Cheryl is from the Prairie Zone and has also agreed to review the work-books for correctness with an emphasis on updating the horse show division questions. We will be publishing the two essays delivered at the 2018 Convention in the April issue of the Canter. Connor McLaughlin spoke on War Horses and Courtney Stockman spoke on Agriculture as part of the 2018 speech theme of “Horse Power Through the Ages” fo-cusing on the use of horses in the yester year. The 2019 speech theme is “Horse Power Today” which focuses on the use of horses today. It appears that three Youth Merit mem-bers will be eligible for this opportunity - Anna Rodriguez, Connor McLaughlin, and Josie Beck. If you would like to reserve your topic, please contact Jessie McLaughlin. Did you attend the 2018 Convention? Don’t forget to log your points into your workbook (available for download on the WSH website)! If you actively attended meetings through-out that weekend, you can easily have 25 points that will count towards your 2018 / 2019 point totals. For youth new to the program, this could help you be halfway to the goal of the first award (Participation Plaque). We hope to grow our numbers in 2019 so please submit your registration form as soon as your 2019 membership dues are paid so that you can begin earning points towards some great awards!

BYLAWS CHANGES

The following change was made to the WSH Bylaws at the 2018 Convention.

ARTICLE V – OFFICERS AND DUTIES

The Zone Director from each zone shall be elected by members of their own zones along with other zone officers prior to October 15 of each year. The name of each Zone Director shall be brought forth at the Annual WSH Convention by that zone’s president or representative for WSH general membership to “Ratify” the election of each elected Zone Director. No new names may be introduced from the floor. Upon ratification, the Zone Director shall be recognized by other members of the WSH Board of Directors as dully elected members of said board and award-ed all honors, liabilities and responsibilities as other members dully elected to their position by the general assembly. There shall be no term limits on Zone Directors and a Zone Director may hold more than one office within their zone (i.e. Director/President, Director/Treasurer, etc.) and may hold more than one position on the Board such as “Zone Director/Committee Chair”.

From Willie Hansen, “My report for 2018 was submitted to the new WSH Secretary at the 2018 annual conven-tion and it stands as reported. I just wanted to take this time to thank all of the WSH members that have helped and supported me in the last 8 years of my chairmanship. It has been a true pleasure and I would urge every-one concerned with this organization to become involved and take an active part in your organization. We are as strong as our weakest member. Don't be that weakest member! My support and assistance is always available to the new Bylaws Chair. Thank you.

WORKING HORSE DIVISION

At the 2018 Annual WSH Convention this year, it was decided that due to a lack of interest and participation, the Working Horse Division would be dissolved, and parts of it would be picked up by other Major Divisions including Horse Show and Trails and Pleasure. Should interest be ex-pressed in the future, the Division may be reinstated. This action will be voted upon by the Board at the January meeting and will come for ratification at the 2019 Annual Convention.

TRAILS AND PLEASURE DIVISION

Due to extenuating circumstances and the resignation of the 2018 Trails and Pleasure Director prior to Convention and the absence of any submitted rule change proposals, the division would like to put forth an addendum to the Board of Directors at their January meeting to allow us to work through this year, and have the new proposals ratified at the 2019 Annual Convention. Prior to discussing the proposed rule changes, we would like to thank Glenna Eilers for her time and effort and for obtaining the 2018 yearend awards for the Division. We wish her well in her new interests.

In response to the inactivation of the Working Horse Division, the WSH Board will vote upon moving “Extreme Trail” into the Trails and Pleasure Division. The name of this “subdivision” would be Mountain Trail to distinguish it from pleasure and competitive trail. Because this will be a competition sport within the Division, it will have its own separate sign-up, score cards, and awards, administered by the Trails and Pleasure Division. A member who is currently active in this discipline has agreed to help form the guidelines for our participation in this new part of Trails and Pleasure during 2019. In the meantime, WSH will be following the IMTCA Rules for this event and only those events approved by IMTCA will count toward WSH Mountain Trail yearend awards. We will be using their rulebook, course layouts and scoring. If you attend oth-er events not recognized by IMTCA, it would be the same as going to a “schooling Show” or playday, and could be counted for “Zone Only” points (depending upon the Zone’s desire to ac-cept these towards points), but will not count toward WSH yearend awards. There will also be a separate signup fee for this portion ($25.00), along with your regular $15.00 signup for Trails and Pleasure, and participation will require each member to report their score card (signed and dated by the event secretary) to the Trails and Pleasure Director within one week of each event for their scores to count.

We are proposing some housekeeping to the language as well, making it a straight 4 miles per hour for our distance calculations for in hand and mounted distances and 5 miles per hour for trails and pleasure driving times. This will eliminate the 10-minute increments. Ponying of a horse will NOT be counted as time for that horse. The rest of the rules will stand as written. The current time sheets will be used and must be submitted to the new director in a timely manner.

Once these proposals have been put forth at the January Board meeting and are approved, we will post new information to the WSH website (as soon as I can have someone show me how to post things). At that time, entry forms and score sheets will also be available.

At Convention, we held an election and it was decided that I would become the new division di-rector / points keeper. Please send all times to me (Willie Hansen) at 12016 Broson St SE, Tenino WA 98589. I can be reached via e-mail at [email protected], by home phone at 360.264.4043, or by cell at 360.790.5419. If I’m at home, my cell is turned off so please leave a TEXT message on the cell and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Please do not leave a voice mail and I do not check my e-mails all that often, either. Looking forward to great things in Trails and Pleasure this year...be sure to join us!

We would like to congratulate George Chick’s gelding and longtime WSH Horse Show Division competitor Image In The Rain, aka Dudley, into the Washington State Horse-men Horse Show Division’s Hall of Fame.

In every horse organization there are horses filling a variety of different roles within the competition history. Some find their role as a Games Horse, Trails and Pleasure Horse, and a horse participating in the Horse Show Division. Their roles provide growth of the organization through their success as a competitor and then provide off spring that con-tinue the legacy. Then there are those horses that contribute through their growth as well as the growth of their handler/rider. Dudley has been just that horse.

Dudley has been a consistent competitor in Washington State Horsemen for the last 13 years. Starting out as an eager yearling in halter to western pleasure, trail, ranch riding and now beginning to spend time with a 4-year-old as his showmanship and leadline mount.

Dudley came to George in the fall of 2005 as a gift from his Mother-In-Law and Father-in-Law, Jole and Albert Birdsell, and wife, Jole Sue. After several years of sharing hors-es, it was time for a horse of his own. Dudley was the perfect match and when intro-duced, it was love at first sight. Since that sunny October day, they have been insepara-ble. 2006 to present has been a wonderful journey of companionship while actively competing in Appaloosa (ApHC), Washington State Horsemen (WSH), and Northeast Zone (NEZ) approved shows. Dudley’s resume of accomplishments with George speaks to the dedication of a man and his horse.

#1313

Make Time For Me or “Nanny” number 1313 is a 22-year-old solid paint mare who showed in the youth all around events at Washington State Horsemen B Sys-tem shows. In 2015, she and I won Washington State Horsemen yearend awards for both the Mariann Bon-well Walk Trot Trail 10 & Under and the Walk Trot Eng-lish/Western Pleasure 10 & Under. I showed her in almost every event there was to offer at one point or another. 2017 was the best year of her show career. At the 2017 Washington State Horsemen convention we won the all around equitation 17 & under perpetual trophy. In 2017 we started showing in ranch riding and won the yearend award for Canal Zone. Nanny’s main events were ranch riding and showmanship however she was also very good at the English events. Nanny is the sweetest mare I have ever met and even though she may be the smallest horse in the barn, she has the biggest heart ever.

SWF Maximus was purchased after the loss of our VP Mighty Shai gelding in 2002. Starting out only showing in Halter and Trail in Hand, this gelding showed a hunger to learn. Although at times his over exu-berance would get the best of him, with some fine guidance from Harlan Blumenthal, I finally got him to collect himself and get serious about his work. The intent was for him to only be a Western Pleasure horse, however after the loss of my beloved Tarrbask, and the encouragement

of several friends and my husband, I tried English Pleasure with him. Although he did not have the knee action desired in Saddle Seat horses, he was a consistent performer. Most importantly, he loved the job. The only time he ever was tacked up English was at a show. It was like a reward for him to get to move out, to move with impulsion after being in Western tack all week. SWF Maximus showed competitively in WSH and Northeast Zone approved shows from 2002-2013 when he suffered a career ending injury. During his career he earned his ROM’s in Halter, English and Western. He also achieved his Superior Buckle and was just 101 points shy of his Supreme Performance Buckle. He earned wins on the Homer B. Splawn Perpetual High Point Arabian Gelding, the Lombardi Perpetual Trophy for High Point Arabian Performance Horse, Region V High Point Awards and induction to the Horse Hall of Fame. The que de gra of his accomplishments with WSH was being in the Top 5 for 2 con-secutive years, which is a difficult feat for a horse that only attends shows in Eastern Washington. Maximus’ accomplishments in the NEZ show an amazing effort and career for a horse that was only supposed to be a Western Pleasure Horse. Gus Strohmeire High Point Arabian, Rhea Ship-ley High Point English Horse, NEZ High Point Western Horse, Four Sea-son’s Horsemen Versatile Pleasure Horse, Ring Leader High Point Horse and NEZ High Point Amateur Horse. SWF Maximus’ resume is rounded out with multiple year end Awards from the Arabian Horse Association open Incentive Program and the Palouse Empire Appaloosa Club Awards for the other than Appaloosa Division. While this gelding was never a contender for a President’s Cup award, his resume of accomplishments still shows a horse that was an ambassador for Washington State Horse-men, an organization for all breeds. Maximus now spends his days in happy retirement with his full brother Bobbi, and they are better known at Ballentrae Farm as “#Crème Puff Brothers”. He is about to become a large

part of my recovery from a serious injury that has left me sidelined for 2018.

QUARTER HORSE REPORT BY ANNA RODRIGUEZ

Hey there, my name is Anna Rodriguez and I am the 2019 AQHA Director for Washington State Horsemen. I have been a WSH member since 2012. 2018 was my first year showing AQHA and I fell in love with it. I have three horses, Belle, Reese, and Nanny. Belle and Reese are both Quarter Horses and Nan-ny is a Solid Paint.

AQHA has so much to offer for their exhibitors and I think that is what makes it so great. Do you show in Western Pleasure? How about Ranch Riding? AQHA has it all! There are many great AQHA shows held in our state where you can pick up points. Show season is right around the corner so start plan-ning your show schedule now! Washington State Quarter Horse Association hosts many great shows and has awesome year end awards! My favorite thing about AQHA is the people. This year was my first year showing at the WSQHA shows and all the youth girls made me feel so welcome there. I made great friends this year with all the other youth girls. You can become an AQHA member today! Sign up at www.aqha.com/membership. Here are the 2019 AQHA approved Show dates for Washington State Quarter Horse Association: No Silver No Sequins / March 21- 24 Trophy Circuit / May 24-27 Region One Novice Show / August 8 AQHA Region One Championships / August 9-11 Northwest Emerald / September 5-8 You can find more information at www.wsqha.com.
