corrosion. This can corrode theperiphery of the tank base, theweld area and the lower wall. Itcan also cause crevice corrosionin the underside of the tankbase.This will lead to metalloss, perforation and structuralproblems. The concrete annuluscan also spall and degrade andany seal initially installed tothe base of the tank at the time ofconstruction can degrade by theaction of weathering or becomeirreversibly displaced/compressed/debonded by the cyclicmovement caused by emptyingand filling the tank. Corrosion of the steel,degradation of the concrete, andloss of an effective seal can createa route for the ingress of water tothe underside of the tank causingdamaging and unseen corrosion tothe external base of the AST. This can be particularly likely ifthe external periphery of the ASTdoes not drain properly. Thesolution is the Denso SteelcoatTank Base Protection System. During a recent visit to thisimportant UAE customer to lookat two new Denso SteelcoatTank Base Protection systeminstallations, the original 2013application was inspected andproved to be in excellent conditionafter four years tough service.

Two more tanks are now protected withthe Denso Steelcoat Tank Base ProtectionSystem applied in March 2017.

They havebeen used for many years tomeasure temperatures inlaboratory and industrialprocesses, and have developeda reputation for accuracy,repeatability, and stability. This

The coating scope of workwas that the entire block valveand pipe spool assembly wasfirst abrasive blasted to aSSPC-SP10 Near-White Metalwith a 2.5 to 5 mil profile. DensoProtal 7250 Spray Epoxy wasthen applied at 25-35 mils DFT

over the entire below ground section of the block valve and pipe spool assembly. The RTD sensor was then attached to the surface of the pipe. The entire area was then coated with a thin layerfor Denso Paste HT™ (Photo 1). Then the RTD is encapsulated with a layer of Densyl Mastic™ (Photo 2). Thiswould assure there were not any voids or cavities left around the RTD. Denso Hotline Tape™ was then appliedwith a 55% overlap around the entire circumference of the pipe (Photo 3). This would ensure the long termsealing of the area around the RTD. The entire area was then wrapped with Denso Glass Outerwrap™ to give mechanical protection to the entireassembly (Photo 4). The entire valve assemblies were then ready to be shipped to site for final installation(Photo 5). The End User that required these block valve and pipe spool assemblies appreciated the fact that Denso NorthAmerica was able to offer the entire solution for coating these RTDs.

The weir is a 60 year oldreinforced concrete structurethat was upgraded to ensureirrigation and stock and domesticwater continued to flow to theWangaratta region. The projectnot only extended the weir’s life;its innovative upgrade alsosaved about $1.25 millioncompared with the cost ofreplacing the weir. A stainless steel protectiveshell was retrofitted to theexisting structure. DensoSeaShield Splashzone UWEpoxy™ was used to seal alljoints prior to filling withDenso 311 Epoxy™. Professional Diving Serviceswas commissioned to assist withthe refurbishment works fromthe design phase through tocommissioning. ProfessionalDiving Services ensured theinstallation methods andmaterials were feasible foruse underwater.

Tea Garden Creek is situated approximately 260 kilometresfrom Melbourne, Victoria. The weir is managed byGoulburn-Murray Water. It was established in the OvensRiver in the 1960s to supply irrigation and stock anddomestic water down the Tea Garden Creek.

The contamination of oil andgrease was so severe that theconcrete had to be degreasedand Acid Etched in excess ofthree times to ensure the surfacewas suitable for coating. Deep downtowards the centre of the mill lies the Dry Pulp store whichhas a conveyor system inside which aids in the packaging ofthe dry pulp. Below the conveyor is a concrete floor whichhas been exposed to over 20 years of oil, grease and othercontaminants which has left the area looking terribly untidyand has made maintenance of the concrete a tough task.

These replace the masonrybeach huts that were destroyedin a Valentine's Day storm in2014. The new beach huts arebeing constructed from pre-castreinforced concrete units to formfour individual terraces totalling250m length. Each terracedsection of huts is formed froma culvert placed on its sidewith an open front. The sealantin each culvert section willplay an essential role inensuring longevity.

Raymond Brown Construction Ltd has started to install 119new concrete beach huts at Milford on Sea. Infrastructureworks include a concrete promenade slab, access rampsand steps, and pedestrian walk-way surfacing.

Densostrip™ used to SealNew Concrete Beach Huts

Denso’s widely used Densostrip™ sealant was recommended to Raymond Brown Construction by MerchantSuppliers, Resapol of Southampton. Apart from its track record, the immediate availability of Densostrip in 20mmx 25mm sections was also an advantage to the contractor. Densostrip is a compound rubber and bitumen jointsealing strip for precast concrete units to provide a permanently flexible watertight seal when compressed

between joint faces previouslyprimed with Densostrip primer.As well as water and sea waterit is resistant to chemical andbiological attack. In addition to being an effectiveseal for precast concrete boxculverts, other uses includemanholes, inspection chambers,shafts, tunnels and pipe sections.

A large US oil pipeline, storage and transportation companyhad been experiencing numerous coating failures with theirexisting internal tank linings and was looking for a solution.

Archco 476P applied over the Archco 400 primer to provide excellent chemical and hightemperature resistances.

Other key factors that playedinto the decision to switch toDenso were the company’ssuccess with several otherDenso buried pipeline coatingsand the valuable technicalservice provided by Denso.

The internal tank floor and twofeet up the sidewall were blastedto a near white finish (SSPC SP-10). The Archco 400 primer,which is a two part epoxy withsuperior wet-out propertiessuitable for sealing heavily pittedfloors, was easily sprayed witha single leg (68:1) airless sprayunit. The following day theArchco 476P was applied usinga plural component airlessspray unit. This allowed for the tank to bereturned to service very quickly(8 hours at 75°F / 23˚C). TheArchco 476P is a 100% solids,two-part, high-temperatureresistant, epoxy phenolic-novolacsystem designed for internaltank linings. The owners can expect aservice life of 20+ years withthe Denso Archco Tank & PipeLining Systems.

To meet various operatingconditions at the Isle of GrainNational Grid site the Denso TankBase system was chosen togive effective protection. Following surface preparation,Denso Hi-Tack Primer™ andDenso Primer D™ were applied.Densyl Mastic™ was then appliedin the gap between the tank andthe base. This not only provides asealant between the concrete andtank base to prevent entrapmentof water but also a smooth profilewhen applying the following DensoHi-Tack Tape™. A single layer ofDenso Ultraseal RT Tape™ wasapplied and then finally a topcoat.
