Last week I spoke about the importance of having parents involved in the school. It is a well-researched fact that having a strong and consistent partnership between families and the school increases children’s learning success. Did you know that parent attendance at last year’s mid-year Student Led Conferences, as measured by the Parent Teacher Online bookings was at 38% of Leanyer families? This is clearly of great concern to the school. However this term’s Parent Teacher and Student meetings recorded over 75% attendance – a huge increase. We need your involvement to do a good job and your children need your involvement to support them in their learning. This is how schools work today which is very different to when you and I went to school. If you didn’t make this term’s meetings please ensure that you arrange to be available early Term 3 for the three way Student Led Conferences as these will be really important for your children’s learning progress. Parent Participation in Children’s learning. Last week I spoke about the importance of having parents involved in the school. It is a well-researched fact that having a strong and consistent partnership between families and the school increases children’s learning success. The student desks and mobile tote trolleys from Modules 3 & 4 are being offered to parents for a $5 donation. Please make payment to the front office and we will organise collection for you.

From the Assistant Principals Professional Development Day On Monday our staff started our Action Research journey. This is very exciting for the Leanyer Community. International research is telling us that innovation in schools floats on a sea of inquiry and that it is a school’s purpose to create the conditions where curiosity is encouraged, developed and sustained. That we open up our thinking, continuously improve practice and create dramatically more innovative approaches to learning and teaching (Timperley, Kaser & Halbert, 2014). Our staff spent the morning with John Dyden who is the Principal of Braitling School in Alice Springs. He has extensive knowledge and experience utilising the power of Action Research in both public and private sectors including running a Consultancy in this field. We then worked on Deep Democracy strategies with Karen Cieri from the Centre for School Leadership, CDU. Focusing on how to get the best out of teams and embracing the true power of the people we work with. In the afternoon we spent time working and kick starting our Action Research. The topics we are starting with include:

• Student Engagement • Early Years • Our Community and Beyond • Curriculum Maths • Curriculum English • School Wide Positive Behaviours • Digital Citizenship

This work focuses on Building Better Futures for our students and we are all looking forward to where this takes us. Road Safety A huge thank you to all the families that are working with use to make our children safe. Feedback from the crossing is that many families and children are coming to school happy, friendly and safely. It is important that we all continue to model how to be safe on and near the road. Kids Safe NT provides the following advice:

1. Supervise your child at all times near traffic, particularly when crossing roads. 2. Teach your child how to cross roads safely. Children must first stop at the kerb. Then they need to look and

listen for traffic, and then decide whether it is safe to cross. (“STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK”) 3. Make the trip to school together along the safest footpaths and use safe crossing places as an example

for your child to follow. 4. If you are unable to be there, arrange for your child to be supervised on the way to and from school and

during after school activities. As if your school has a walking school bus program. 5. Explain words like “fast”, “slow”, “near” and “far”. Talk about signs and traffic lights and the safe places to

cross. Point out dangerous places and where not to cross – near curves and where things might hide children from view. 6. If you are picking children up from school, have a safe meeting place, then cross the street with them. Never call them over from the opposite side of the street. 7. Continue to make sure children get in and out of cars on the kerb side. 8. Ask at your child’s school what traffic safety programmes are taught.

Students at Leanyer School use Learning Goals to improve their learning and achieve success. Students work with teachers to identify, explore and develop personal learning goals and strategies to achieve them. They monitor and reflect on their own development and celebrate their achievements. Learning Goals are meaningful to each child and are achieved at different rates and times of the year.

Defence School Transition Aide (DSTA) This Saturday 21st March there will be a National Parade for ADF members who deployed on OP Slipper and to say thank you for their service. The parade will commence at 10am and finish around 12pm. There will be food stalls, entertainment and activities which will cease around 2pm. The Leanyer Primary School Defence students and their friends have been busy over the last three Tuesdays making two banners for this parade. It would be great to see as many students and their families representing Leanyer School and help hold up the banners and to say thank you to the troops. Your banners will be along both sides of the road along Knuckey Street. There will be media present; TV and newspapers coverage so you and your child may end up on TV. 1 Brigade would like the kids and banners to have a presence. The REDLO, Annick Beyderwellen, will be there in a black DCO shirt and orange DCO cap (so tell kids to look for the lady in the orange cap). WHERE to meet: If we could meet out the front of the old Woolies (opposite the entrance to the mall) with banners and make that the gathering point for kids and their families at around 9.30 am. Have a great week, and don’t forget Apple Slinkies every Tuesday and Wednesday at morning recess times. Regards Greg Grace Defence School Transition Aide (DSTA) Leanyer Primary School
