Auroral displays over the Antarctic plateau during the winter. Auroras are created when fast-moving, magnetic solar material strikes the magnetosphere producing a geomagnetic storm. Increasing interest is being shown by satellite manufacturers and insurance companies in modelling the interactions between the sun and the outer atmosphere to predict storms and limit damage to satellites.
