PREP AND YEAR 1 INCURSION ‐ BRAVEHEARTS ‘THE DITTO SHOW’ Children in Prep and Year One will experience the Bravehearts Personal Safety Education incursion, ‘The Ditto Show’. The Bravehearts program provides children with the basic principles of personal safety and tools to stay safe. The ‘Ditto Show’ is a live performance with ‘Ditto’ being the star attraction. ‘Ditto’, the Bravehearts’ mascot comes to life as the star of Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Education Program to ensure the show is delivered in a fun, interactive and engaging manner. The show portrays personal safety messages through specifically written songs such as ‘Private Parts’ and ‘Run and Tell Someone You Can Trust’. Children remember these catchy songs in the same way they remember common nursery rhymes. Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Program and resources are NOT SEX EDUCATION. Private parts are simply explained as the chest, between the legs, inappropriate kissing and the bottom. Topics covered throughout the show consist of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ feelings, The Body’s Warning Signs, Private Parts, Secrets and what to do if you feel unsafe or unsure. Each year level will view the show at two different times. Prep students from 11:30am ‐ 12:45pm and Year 1 students from 1:30pm ‐ 3:00pm on Thursday 10th August. For information regarding the show and what will be covered please, visit the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcW7McpnvGI

DEVELOPING READING SKILLS NEWS
The Skill of Inferencing – Interpreting the Hidden Messages Quite often, authors use the art of incorporating hidden messages and meanings within their stories. This strategy adds depth to narratives and prompts the reader to delve deeper into the story and connect the messages and meanings hiding within the text to their prior knowledge. The skill of inferencing begins to be developed within children at an early age, through reading and interpreting facial expressions and pictures. When children become more proficient at reading, the skill of inferencing becomes extremely important as it assists students to develop their higher order thinking skills, which are used across all areas of the curriculum. Below are a series of questions that you can ask your child at home to help develop their inferential reading skills:
What reason was there for the character to…? Predict what the character might do next. What was a different way the problem could have
been solved? What is your opinion of the character’s actions /
words? What was the author’s message within the story? Did the illustrations add to the meanings / messages
in the story? What questions do you have about the story? Why do you think the author chose the title? Can you
think of another title that would suit the story? How did the character/s change within the story? Have you read any other stories that are similar to
this one? Remember, reading at home with your child can make a big difference in enhancing his/her reading and comprehension skills.

There are only six weeks left to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge! The Premier’s Reading Challenge is open to all students from Prep to Year 10.
The Challenge aims to promote a love of reading and builds upon the literacy programs already in place at School, as well as providing a wonderful way for parents to encourage their child to read and improve their literacy skills. It is not a competition, but a challenge to each student. The Challenge also encourages students to read more frequently and more broadly, with a wide range of authors and books making up the booklist. Prep, Year 1 and 2 students are challenged to read or experience 30 books. They can either read the books by themselves, with someone else or be read to. All P‐2 classes at Bacchus Marsh Grammar will do the Challenge together as a class.
Students in Years 3‐6 must read 15 books to meet the Challenge. Two‐thirds of the books for all students need to be from the 2017 Challenge booklist. Logon details will be provided to Year 3‐6 students this week.
The Challenge ends on 8 September 2017. All students who complete the Challenge will receive a certificate from Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews.
Students who have returned an online Honour Roll consent form will also have their names published on the online Honour Roll. Futher details of the Challenge and the full list of books are available from the PRC website: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

Prep Project During the course of 2017 – 2018 the Prep Team are involved in the Prep Literacy Project. The BMG team and prep staff from a number of other schools have the privilege of working with Michelle Hutchison to focus on the pillars of reading instruction. These pillars are sounds, letters, phonological and phonemic awareness, reading strategies, high fluency words, handwriting and writing. On Monday 7 August it was our turn to showcase our school and host the program, in doing so we invited Senior School students that work in conjunction with Willam Angliss, along with the guidance of their teachers Laura Edwards and Belinda Lipscombe, to prepare and serve our prep project guests in the café. With a citrus theme, having collected lemons from our Staughton Vale Campus, the menu included an alternate drop of spiced orange chicken and lamb cutlets, followed by lemon delicious deserts. A huge congratulations to the hospitality team, as our guests were certainly impressed with both the standard of food and service and a big thank you from the prep team for the making our host day such a success. We look forward to hosting again in 2018.

Re‐enrolment forms for the Instrumental Music Program for 2018 will be sent home to existing students on 4 September. The re‐enrolment form must be completed even if you are wishing to cancel out of the program. This form MUST be returned to the Music Administrator Fran Raynor by Friday 13 October 2017 to secure your child’s place in the 2018 Instrumental Music Program or to cancel from the program. Students wishing to enrol into the 2018 instrumental program who are not currently part of the program, need to fill out an expression of interest form which can be found at the following link on the school website; http://www.bmg.vic.edu.au/_uploads/ppage/files/Music%20‐%20Enrolment%20Form%20Gen%202018%20SEM%201.pdf Formal letters of offer will be sent to parents in Week 5 of Term 4.
Please note that allocated teachers may change from year to year due to a number of factors. Every effort is made for students to retain their existing teachers, but this is not always possible.
In the instance that a student is enrolled in a shared lesson format and a suitable partner to share with is not available, students will continue to be enrolled in a shared lesson format but will receive a reduced private lesson of 20 minutes.
If you have any queries about enrolment, lesson format, instrument purchase/hire or any other general music enquiries please contact Dean Thomas on 5366 4800. Dean Thomas Director of Music DEBATING NEWS
ICCES Debating Competition On Wednesday the 2 August, BMG hosted the ICCES Debating Competition. We had two teams of junior students and a team of senior students battle it out amongst some very impressive competition. Our two junior teams managed to use the skills that they have learnt through the Monday night DAV competition throughout
Page 7 of 9 BMG News
the year, resulting in them winning all four of their debates and the junior section of the competition. Their debates on social media and sport were of a very high standard. It has been a pleasure to see them grow in confidence and ability over the year. Unfortunately, our luck was not quite the same with the seniors, and we went down by three points in each debate. The students however, still performed very well and should be congratulated on their efforts. The students who participated in the event were: Junior Team 1: Lloyd Slimmon (best speaker), Sophie Wall (best speaker), Mia White, Lily Trethowan Junior Team 2: Declan Xerri (best speaker), Yasmin Matthews (best speaker), Chantal Thomas, Indiana Bowden Senior Team: Sarah Hageman, Andrew Donohue, Victoria Sutton, Katelynn Condon, Jack Hurley Well done to all of these students for preparing for these debates, and presenting very well. Aine Murphy and Georgie Worland Legacy Public Speaking Competition On Thursday 3 August, four students went to Legacy Melbourne, on Swanston street, for the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award. The students‐ Aaliyah Moosajee, Samara Peel, Lily Trethowan and Jenna Franks‐ were selected at the end of last term, and have been working hard since then on perfecting their speeches and practicing their impromptu speaking skills. They were required to speak on the themes of comradeship, remembrance, community service or sacrifice, and they did this extremely well. Unfortunately, we did not place at this event, but all four students managed to meet the time limits in the impromptu competition, and come to logical conclusions, which we had been working on. Congratulations goes to these students for their hard work, and I hope to see them all put their hands up for competitions like this in the future. Aine Murphy Debating and Public Speaking Coordinator Wyn Speaking Competition Just a week and a half ago, I was heading to Brisbane to compete in the Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition national final, something I never expected I would be doing. When I was competing in the regional and state finals the idea that I might end up at nationals never even crossed my mind. But after four rounds of competition, that was where I found myself.
Throughout all the competitions I heard a multitude of speech topics, ranging from the reasons why comic sans is awful, to the refugee crisis, with many in between. The great thing about this is that you get to hear about such diverse opinions and interests, and consider viewpoints you would never have otherwise considered. As for the finals in Brisbane, I had so much fun! We got to climb Brisbane’s Story Bridge, do an escape room, and team up for a scavenger hunt around the city. It was so amazing to bond with people from all over the country, and learn new things from every one of them. The entire experience was absolutely incredible from start to finish, and I am very grateful that I was lucky enough to experience it. For me, public speaking is a way to express myself and make my voice heard. It enables me to escape my usual awkward self and feel comfortable with my own voice and thoughts. I recommend it to anyone, whether you think you are good or not, because the experiences you gain from it are irreplaceable.

“From the Gym” ICCES X‐Country
On Wednesday 3 August, Bacchus Marsh Grammar sent thirty‐six senior school students to Bundoora Park to compete in the 2017 ICCES Cross Country Championship. For the majority of the day it was overcast, with a gentle cool breeze and a dry track to run on making for perfect running conditions. There were two courses on the day; a 4km track for the Girls and Year 7/8 Boys, and 6km track for the 9/10 and VCE Boys, which was a little more demanding due to the distance and the undulating terrain. A number of students achieved outstanding results on the day, with Bailey Sharp and Sophie McMinimme blitzing the field to win their respective VCE events, Ethan McMinimme narrowly finishing 2nd in the 9/10 Boys, and Matthew Rosario and Jack Bidwell finishing 4th in VCE and 9/10 Boys respectively.
Overall Bacchus Marsh Grammar finished 6th on the day, only 5 points off 5th place. Congratulations to all the athletes who represented the school by participating on the day and a big than you to the staff that managed and coached our athletes. Mr Oldaker
