Auld Lang Syne

By George Quinlan, Jr.

As each year wanes and a new year be-gins, it provides opportunities for us to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. Each year has very positive events and opportunities, but also times of great sadness with the loss of some dear friends.

We mourn the sudden loss of longtime QF rep, Bob Garcia, who joined QF in 1994 and retired in 2015. Bob’s career in the music began in high school as a brass repair apprentice at Frank Graham Music in Chicago. His journey in the industry then ventured to Purdom’s Sub-urban Music in LaGrange, where he moved from repair to school service representative. For decades, he faithful-ly served hundreds of local Band and Orchestra directors, primarily in the St. Charles, Geneva, Mannheim, and Westchester school districts for QF.

Did you notice a new “wrinkle” present-ed at the VanderCook Concert at the70th Annual Midwest Clinic in December? I enjoyed the concert which featured sev-eral guest conductors including Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, Jerry Hoover & Brian Logan along with Stacey Larson Do-lan & Dr. Charles Menghini. As I turned the pages of the program, my eyes landed on the roster of the perform-ers. VCM has a wonderful percussion studio with 15 percussionists in the band. This year, all of them performed on a secondary instrument for this per-formance! Brilliant...what a great op-portunity for these future Music Educa-tors!

We love hosting events and the last few months have been very active. Profes-sors Jim Yakas & Kevin Lepper taught a MECA (Continuing Education) course at QF-Burr Ridge in late fall focused on Percussion instrument repair. We are

delighted to announce the first EVER VanderCook MECA class at QF-Mishawaka. This same percussion class will be held in Mishawaka on April 8-9th.

We recently hosted another professional development course on tenon replace-ment and advance oboe repair tech-niques for NAPBIRT-the National Asso-ciation for Band Instrument Repair Technicians.

QF was honored and delighted to host several music retailers from China spon-sored by Yamaha during the Midwest

Clinic too. It is interesting to learn and share with those in similar situations in other countries. The group visited QF repair facilities, learned about the history of the Midwest Clinic, and why the US model for Music Education is unique in the world.

Thanks to brew masters Bill Rank, Bill Goetz, Kevin Schoenbach, Sarah Whitlock, Dr. Robert Sinclair, Ed Fitzgerald, David Eccles, Eric Well-man, Nathan Sackschewsky & Steve Shires for making Q-Brew a highlight of the QF reception at Midwest!

As a member of the board of the Music Achievement Council, we were delight-ed to co-sponsor “Bridging the Gap” session at IMEA-Ft Wayne with Marcia Neel. This session explores the best practices of retaining music students at the critical juncture of Eight to Ninth Grade. Great session!!

Happy New Year!

during the development phase. The nature of my work puts me in some incredible moments such as the development of the Marquise bow. Jeff Van Fossen is an aero-space engineer. Paul Phillips is a CSO first violinist. Listening and watching Jeff communicate with the “player of the bow” about the intricate nature of the player ’s experience was astonishing to observe. Jeff is enough of a musician to be able to perceive tonal variances comparing the prototype bow to the player ’s favorite Pernambuco bows. But, where I was most impressed was his ability to communicate with the player concerning the player ’s physical experience. The tonal experience is materials. The physical experience is using engineering to understand the experience of the player. This is where I had question after question for Jeff and I held on the specifics of Jeff’s answers to me as best I could – whew! Learning more about the physics of the process of the bow producing sound was revealing. Having lived through it, it is clearly understandable to me why CodaBow has been so successful. It’s as real as it gets. Jeff ’s goal was to better replicate the warmth of a Pernambuco bow in a high performance carbon based bow. Fantastic work Jeff! Great bow!

Lloyd Palmiter, our Str ing Specialist, br ings extensive knowledge to our company stem-ming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and cello; serving as a clinician and consultant for Conn-Selmer; and, from his experience as general manager of the William Harris Lee Workshop. Remaining active as a clinician and teacher, Lloyd directs the Silver Strings Ensemble that consists of adult learners of the stringed instruments and has per-formed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. One of his specialties, orchestral workshops tracing the elements of the making of a stringed instrument and associating those to the elements necessary to produce quality tone on a stringed instrument, have become very popular with our Illinois and Indiana teachers. To schedule a workshop or step-up day, call his office at our Burr Ridge location. He visits all store locations regularly and is available by appoint-ment to individually help you and your students find just the right instrument. You’ve see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Violin Society of America, and at the International Exhibition of violinmakers in Cremona, Italy, where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments available

from all over the world!

THE MARQUISE EXPERIENCE

C o m i n g S o o n . . . M AR QU ISE GS

T HE P LAY ER'S BO W Inspired by centuries of tradition and decades of fine bow making experience, the MARQUISE GS is the standard -bearer of carbon fiber master bows. Designed by the pioneers of advanced bowmaking, the GS delivers exquisite handling and expressive sound once reserved only for the finest bows. Both advanced and organic fibers expertly blended bestow natural response, sensitivity, and beauty. Debuting through violin shops March 2017. Starting at $1,295. As stated in the paragraph above from Coda Bow, this March QF will debut a new master -level CodaBow. The MARQUISE GS is born out of CodaBow’s decade experience crafting, together with master bow maker Roger Zabinski, bespoke master bows for private musicians. The MARQUISE GS is a both a tribute to tradition and a testament to technology. Incorporating the most innovative materials, technologies, and methods, the MARQUISE GS offers players the expressive sound and organic sensitivity formerly claimed by only the finest traditional Pernambuco bows.

Because of its advanced and refined nature, the Marquise lends itself to only limited production. Quinlan and Fabish was involved in the experimental phase of the development of this bow (and the cello bow which will be released in the future). Because of our association with CodaBow, we are included among the dealers being offered bows for first trial. Please let us know of your interest in trying this bow once it arrives in March. We anticipate much interest

in the bow based on our initial tr ial

Modern Multi Tenor Book

Rudimental Cook Book (Row-Loff)

Progressive Steps to Syncopation (Alfred Pub)

Stick Control for the Snare Drum-mer (Alfred Pub)

Snare Drum for Beginners (Hal Leon-

ard Pub)

Any of these would be a wonderful addition for your percussionist’s library, at any level!

For many, it’s Solo & Ensemble Season! This could mean many things for your percussion section. Everything from music, methods, tuning, and even all those little “Toys” that you may have never heard of! Below I’ve suggested a few things to consider. Your snare drummer doesn’t necessarily have to use what he used in the fall. There are some specialty solo sticks for rudimental solo’s. Same goes for multi tenor players as well. As far as keyboard mallets go, it all de-pends on preference of tone & feel. Don’t be frightened by some prices, as these days the higher quality mallets use a much more durable material that can many times outlast the cheaper choices by an extra pair. Make sure your drum heads are up to snuff. If your drums have the same heads from last August on them, don’t short change your students going to con-test. Put a new one on it! They want to sound the best they possibly can, so help them make that happen! REMEMBER...Just because your equipment’s drum heads are not broken, does NOT mean they don’t need to be replaced! Heads can have a pretty long shelf life, but there is a limit. Once the mylar loses it’s elasticity, tuning is pret-ty much a waste of time. If you have wisely invested in quality equipment, be sure to maximize it’s potential for quali-ty sound. A new snare head, or new timpani heads, can make a HUGE differ-ence in sound quality, as well as ease of tuning.

Dan Hough is our percussion specialist in Ft Wayne. A former percussionist and drum major with The Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps, he often consults with various high school bands and conducts Drum Major workshops. Dan specializes helping directors make wise choices for the percussion needs...and golf!

The Percussion Room

Winter Season Variety:

In the Indiana Region, winter brings a wide array of percussion activities. The world of Indoor Percussion (Movement AND Concert Class) continues to grow and evolve. This often times opens up some debate over validity, necessity, and or justification. Not to mention available budget and funding. Although it’s not the answer for every program, in the right setting it can be a tremendous outlet for participation. Being competitive is not the only option either. Simply a “Winter Session”, with a couple basket-ball game performances, can easily keep musicians involved & connected. In addition to cultivating existing percus-sion section skills, it often generates ac-tivity with students outside your music program. Student musicians who are not able to schedule a music class can still feel connected to their musical roots, if given the opportunity. Former clarinet players often times transition to being a great bass line player, and a former flute player may make a tremendous Marimba player. A guitar player who always wanted to be involved, could find his place as well. The key is remaining open minded to the laundry list of possibilities. Positive ones, and not just the “why we can’t do it” approach. As stated before, worth debating at the very least. Lastly… I can never stress this enough: As always, don’t forget your ear protec-tion…. And don’t forget to remind our students too!!! Etymotic ear protection is available at all QF stores. Not just for drummers, but ALL musicians. I hope you heard me! www.etymotic.com

Quarter Notes Flashback

As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary of our school music newsletter, Quarter Notes, we will share some of the original

content from our first year of publication

Some of the members of the Independence JHS band of Palos Heights, directed by

Rich Cullen, proudly dis-played their American patriot style new Stanbury uniforms

in our first issue. At that time, QF was the Stanbury repre-

sentative for the Chicago area.

We also introduced a JHS Concert Program Exchange.

QN would publish concert programs

submitted by local schools for sharing with other directors.

Among those featured in that issue was Lemont Dist 113 band, directed by Ken Marx

Greetings from Shires Shop Chicago and QF-Montgomery! We hope you had a happy holiday. We’ve had a lot of excitement recently. In November, we were delighted to par-ticipate in the Northern Illinois Universi-ty Trumpet Day, featuring S.E. Shires artist Vincent DiMartino with special guest John Foster.

While in town, Vinny and John were nice enough to work with the students at St. Charles East HS-directors Jim Kull, Jim Stombres & Gil Wukitsch as well has help several students choose their custom S.E. Shires trumpets here at the store. What a unique opportunity for all of the students involved! Be sure to try out the newest from S.E. Shires at ILMEA in Peoria later this month. The new Q Series Trumpets and Trombones represent an extraordinary value and are available on our 1st Chair plan, making virtuosity affordable for young musicians and their families!
