This special annual event will be held at our Burr Ridge location on Tuesday, February 21st from 8:30am-4:00pm. Lunch will be provided and the event is free to any current student teacher or interested college student. For many years, this event has helped young teachers-to-be with some very valuable information to help during their first year of teaching.

Students will spend time with members of the QF Repair Staff learning some basics of woodwind, brass, and string

development course on tenon replace-ment and advance oboe repair techniques for NAPBIRT-the National Association for Band Instrument Repair Technicians.

QF was honored and delighted to host several music retailers from China spon-sored by Yamaha during the Midwest Clinic too. It is interesting to learn and share with those in similar situations in other countries. The group visited QF repair facilities, learned about the history of the Midwest Clinic, and why the US model for Music Education is unique in the world.

By George Quinlan, Jr.

As each year wanes and a new year be-gins, it provides opportunities for us to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. Each year has very positive events and opportunities, but also times of great sadness with the loss of some dear friends.

We mourn the sudden loss of longtime QF rep, Bob Garcia, who joined QF in 1994 and retired in 2015. Bob’s career in the music began in high school as a brass repair apprentice at Frank Graham Music in Chicago. His journey in the industry then ventured to Purdom’s Sub-urban Music in LaGrange, where he moved from repair to school service representative. For decades, he faithful-ly served hundreds of local Band and Orchestra directors, primarily in the St. Charles, Geneva, Mannheim, and Westchester school districts for QF.

Did you notice a new “wrinkle” present-ed at the VanderCook Concert at the70th Annual Midwest Clinic in December? I enjoyed the concert which featured sev-eral guest conductors including Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, Jerry Hoover & Brian Logan along with Stacey Larson Dolan & Dr. Charles Menghini. As I turned the pages of the program, my eyes land-ed on the roster of the performers. VCM has a wonderful percussion studio with 15 percussionists in the band. This year, all of them performed on a secondary instrument for this performance! Bril-liant...what a great opportunity for these future Music Educators!

We love hosting events and the last few

months have been very active. Profes-sors Jim Yakas & Kevin Lepper taught a MECA course at QF-Burr Ridge in late fall focused on Percussion instrument repair.

I am excited to co-present a session at ILMEA with Doug Adams of Hickory Creek MS-Frankfort on Thursday, Janu-ary 26th. The Frankfort band has long been noted for a large and strong low brass section. The event will also pay tribute to Doug’s co-worker, Dana Ruff, who passed away suddenly last year. The session is entitled “Recruiting by the Numbers (and other secrets to recruiting more low brass)”. Together, we will explore the recruiting techniques that have yielded these positive results for so many years.

Happy New Year!

2017 Chicagoland Outstanding

Music Educator Awards

It’s often said that being recognized by your peers for outstanding work is the ultimate compliment. Have you often wished you had a special way to thank an important mentor or colleague who helped you advance in your career? Do you wish to recognize an up and coming “superstar” in your area? Now’s your chance...nominate that person for this special award. Recognizing excellence in the music education profession since 1989, we proudly announce the opening of nominations for this prestigious award. Since the inception over 150 of your colleagues have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to Music Education. You will find a nomination form above. You can also use our website, and e-mail your nomination to us

([email protected]). Take a moment and complete the nomination form before March 1st. Your nominations will be sent to a selection committee for final selection that comprises previous award winners (see the list on page four). In addition, this committee will select a winner of the John Paynter Lifetime Achievement Award, which is dedicated to our first guest speak-er at the 1989 awards program, Mr. John Paynter of Northwestern University.

Please take time to nominate an important colleague or men-tor for this worthy recognition. With the QF expansion in Indi-ana & Michigan this recogni-tion program was expanded beyond the Chicagoland area with the inception of the Michiana Outstanding Music Educator Awards recognizing Indiana and Michigan music educators. Winners will be announced in the Spring issue of Quarter Notes and presented at an awards ceremony in June.

during the development phase. The nature of my work puts me in some incredible moments such as the development of the Marquise bow. Jeff Van Fossen is an aero-space engineer. Paul Phillips is a CSO first violinist. Listening and watching Jeff communicate with the “player of the bow” about the intricate nature of the player ’s experience was astonishing to observe. Jeff is enough of a musician to be able to perceive tonal variances comparing the prototype bow to the player ’s favorite Pernambuco bows. But, where I was most impressed was his ability to communicate with the player concerning the player ’s physical experience. The tonal experience is materials. The physical experience is using engineering to understand the experience of the player. This is where I had question after question for Jeff and I held on the specifics of Jeff’s answers to me as best I could – whew! Learning more about the physics of the process of the bow producing sound was revealing. Having lived through it, it is clearly understandable to me why CodaBow has been so successful. It’s as real as it gets. Jeff ’s goal was to better replicate the warmth of a Pernambuco bow in a high performance carbon based bow. Fantastic work Jeff! Great bow!

Lloyd Palmiter, our String Specialist, brings extensive knowledge to our company stemming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and cello; serving as a clinician and consultant for Conn-Selmer; and, from his experience as general manager of the William Harris Lee Workshop. Remaining active as a clinician and teacher, Lloyd directs the Silver Strings Ensemble that consists of adult learners of the stringed instruments and has per-formed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. One of his specialties, orchestral workshops tracing the elements of the making of a stringed instrument and associating those to the elements necessary to produce quality tone on a stringed instrument, have become very popular with our Illinois and Indiana teachers. To schedule a workshop or step-up day, call his office at our Burr Ridge location. THE MARQUISE EXPERIENCE

C o m i n g S o o n . . . M AR QU ISE GS

T HE P LAY ER'S BO W Inspired by centuries of tradition and decades of fine bow making experience, the MARQUISE GS is the standard -bearer of carbon fiber master bows. Designed by the pioneers of advanced bowmaking, the GS delivers exquisite handling and expressive sound once reserved only for the finest bows. Both advanced and organic fibers expertly blended bestow natural response, sensitivity, and beauty. Debuting through violin shops March 2017. Starting at $1,295. As stated in the paragraph above from Coda Bow, this March QF will debut a new master -level CodaBow. The MARQUISE GS is born out of CodaBow’s decade experience crafting, together with master bow maker Roger Zabinski, bespoke master bows for private musicians. The MARQUISE GS is a both a tribute to tradition and a testament to technology. Incorporating the most innovative materials, technologies, and methods, the MARQUISE GS offers players the expressive sound and organic sensitivity formerly claimed by only the finest traditional Pernambuco bows.

Because of its advanced and refined nature, the Marquise lends itself to only limited production. Quinlan and Fabish was involved in the experimental phase of the development of this bow (and the cello bow which will be released in the future). Because of our association with CodaBow, we are included among the dealers being offered bows for first trial. Please let us know of your interest in trying this bow once it arrives in March. We anticipate much interest

in the bow based on our initial tr ial

The All-Illinois Junior Band was founded for the express purpose of creating a premier musical experience for the state’s finest middle school band stu-dents. As the first statewide middle school honor band in over half a century, membership in AIJB is determined solely through competitive blind audi-tions. Its goals are to provide an opportunity for middle school students to perform excellent literature with a mature ensemble and distinguished con-ductor, to interact with similarly dedicated student musicians from around the State of Illinois, and to encourage and inspire these outstanding young musi-cians to continue their musical studies.

Noted Educator, Performer, and Composer, Doug Akey will be the guest conductor for the two-event at Rehearsal and performance in the world class Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois—January 13-14

Kane County Institute Day - March 3, 2017 - Geneva HS

Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance Workshop From the appearance of the National Standards in Music to the recent National Core Arts Standards, teachers have been asking: "How can I teach more comprehensively? How can I demonstrate to administrators and par-ents, in a language they can understand, a curriculum with clear outcomes that are not only skill-based but include critical and creative thinking, a wide range of knowledge, and a strong affective dimension? And how

can I actually plan, teach and assess all of this and still prepare students for high quality performances?" Created by Wisconsin teachers in 1977, Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) has been helping teachers choose quality repertoire, focus their outcomes, develop strategy-enriched rehearsals and create meaningful assessments. It is not a curriculum or methodology, but a model for teacher planning that puts students at the center and works for any music teacher, regardless of grade level, back-ground, or school setting. It is both philosophical and practical, and over the last several decades has proven to be transformative for both veteran teachers and novices. This program will address General Music, Band, Choir and Orchestra teaching using the CMP Model. After a quick CMP overview, people new to CMP will attend a demo presented by a master teacher. For those who attended the Kane County Institute Day in 2015 or 2016 (or even one of our full CMP Workshops), this day will offer new material and the opportunity to expand your knowledge and potential applications, specifically focusing on the area of music selection and analysis. The session will provide an overview of the CMP model along with personal stories relative to the potential for success of students and teachers. Specific "Demo" sessions will put a CMP plan into action, with participants playing the role of a student ensemble over a multi-week rehearsal sequence focusing on Analysis, Outcomes, Strategies and Assessment. Sessions will also highlight helpful con-nections with the Danielson model. Repertoire sessions will examine literature, focusing on Music Selection. Participants will also learn of how to further sharpen their skills and knowledge of the CMP model at full length CMP workshops. The event, sponsored by Quinlan & Fabish Music Company, will be hosted by the Kane County Regional Office of Education at Ge-neva High School. Registration opens on February 1, 2017. Please visit the Kane County ROE website to register

New from Vandoren are the V16 S-Plus alto saxophone mouthpieces. Designed to provide a more focused and dynamic sound ideal for lead alto playing, the S-Plus refers to the chamber size of the mouthpiece. As the name suggests, the chamber is somewhere between a small and medium, allowing for a great deal of versatility and flexibility of sound. These high quality ebonite mouthpieces are available at Q&F for $139.99 and are definitely going to be in demand. In following up on their highly successful “mix” cards, Vandoren has added the Alto Sax Mix Card, which is comprised of 4 reeds typically used by

classical saxophonists (one traditional, one V12 and 2 of the new V21). Instead of buying a complete box, this is a great way for a player still trying to develop

their own sound to decide on what reed is best for them. Many moons ago, the Charlie Parker Omnibook was a staple for all young jazz players. This book contained dozens of solo transcriptions which could be used as a reference tool, to develop dexterity and to be played as jazz etudes as young students learned the jazz language. This model has proven to be quite successful and now there are a multitude of Omnibooks now available, including Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane and Wynton Marsalis. All of these, with the exception of the Marsalis book, are available in all keys. Of course, nothing will ever take the place or provide the benefit of transcribing the solos yourself, but these books are great to have from an analysis and

reference point of view. QF is now officially a dealer for Jakob Winter cases. These lightweight and “green” cases provide great protection for your instruments while being comfortable to carry and surprisingly affordable. Currently, we have stock of the many of the saxophone and violin cases. As we are now in the beginning of winter, all reed players will be dealing with the drastic humidity issues that can affect cane. It’s important to whatever possible to maintain a consistent humidity level for our reeds. Both D’Addario and Vandoren have products that help tremendously in regards to humidity control. All Q&F locations should be well stocked with both the RVCASE04 from D’Addario ($22.99 qf price) and the HRC10 & HRC20 from Vandoren ($35.99 QF price). Best of luck to everyone as we enter contest season!
