Respect, Excellence, Community Volume 30 Number 06 7 May 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians We are one week away from the half-way mark in term 2, and what a term it has been! Teachers and student have found the delivery of our program a real challenge. This challenge has also been felt by parents who have supported our students at home, thank you. I have indicated to teachers to be mindful of the amount of work they are sending home as feedback, which has been generally very positive, has indicated that students are finding the work overwhelming. Teachers will concentrate on making sure studentswellbeing is looked after and will aim to reduce the amount of work given to students from year 7 to 10. Our academic expectations will remain high, but we also understand that the most important thing is to ensure we maintain a hopeful and positive frame of mind as we begin to think about the recovery from the current crisis. Whilst we have seen some students flourish under this new delivery, for some students this has not been ideal. It is important to us that families maintain an optimistic outlook to the current situation and that, after all of this is over, we continue to have a positive relationship with our family members and our community. To this end, Stawell Secondary College will be concentrating on cultivating our ongoing relationship with students and parents to help get them through this crisis whilst maintaining student academic standards. We, at Stawell Secondary College, would like to recognise your hard work and continued support to our teachers and community. Lets all maintain a sense of hope and a positive outlook for the future. WEEK 4 OF REMOTE DELIVERY Parents are reminded that week 4 of term will see the full set of subjects as per our schedule: Who do I contact if we have issues with technology? We intend to be able to support all families to access remote learning during Term 2. Any concerns can be directed to a students Homeroom teacher or Year Level Coordinators who will follow up with the family. Repairs and hardware issues can be done through the school by appointment on Monday 7:30 am to 12:00pm and Friday 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. There is now an email address that parents and students can access for support: [email protected] What if my child needs to attend school? Murray Hart has kindly offered to be available from 9:00 am to 11:00 am every day to deal with any issues parents may have in relation to student management -0408 588 318. In order to continue to support social distancing measures, school attendance is currently only open to students where parents cannot work from home, or students are deemed vulnerable. Students that do attend school under these categories should contact the school. Students will be provided supervision for the remote learning they have been set by their teachers, whilst also abiding by strict social distancing rules within class and during breaks. A reminder to parents that there will be no direct instruction while at school and that class teachers will be delivering content remotely and not in person for all students. Students attending school will be supervised as their content will still be delivered remotely. Students that are ill should not attend school. Parents/guardians will be required to provide notification on a week by week basis if a student is to attend the College as per DET requirements. Please complete this form if you have not done so and intend to send students to school: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdW04Pia_Gzu7wYIUnwwiE4kSGW3ChF_WtviNqpVDmVc0KGdQ/viewform? usp=sf_link Please Note: The College Admin will be operating in a limited capacity. Please call prior to visiting so that an appoint- ment can be made. The College Canteen will be closed until further notice. School buses will run as normal and adhere to Health guidelines as provided by PTV and DET From here on- It is unclear whether state and federal governments will agree on a return to school date. We will follow the advice given to us by DET, which at the moment seems to be that we will continue to deliver our program remotely. We would like to, once again, express our gratitude for the support and efforts parents have undertaken to support students learning from home. We do understand that there is fatigue setting in as the term is reaching the halfway mark. Stawell Secondary College School Council

HELP US, WE NEED YOU Dear parents, There are currently two positions available for Stawell Secondary College School Council. Why become a school council member? School Council enables parents to have a say on the values, mission and expectations that our organisation maintains in the education of students at Stawell Secondary College. It is a fantastic way of guiding our school to improve the way we operate. I would strongly advise parents to become members of school council as it is a rewarding and great way to make a difference to our community. Through school council parents are able to actively participate on the education of students and make a real difference. What are the commitments of school council? School council members are asked to attend one meeting per month and have the option to participate in a number of sub-committees that look at aspects in policy, facilities, finance and participation. These committees undertake much of the discussions and actions that make our school council meetings brief and succinct. Why we need parents? Parents are an invaluable aspect of school council. It is a real collaborative approach to the way we deliver our program. Having parents on school council enables us to get a different perspective on how we frame our outlook and gives our school a different perspective. Parent feedback is invaluable, and we want, now more than ever, parents to be involved. The recent crisis has shown our school can work with the community to benefit our students and their future. Parents are an invaluable asset in this process. What do I need to do? Please contact the school on: [email protected] We will contact parents who are interested and communicate with them as soon as we receive these nominations. We look forward to working with you.

VCAL – A great effort to engage in learning

We have been impressed with the enormous efforts of students, parents/guardians and VCAL teachers in setting up for online learning and communicating concerns and progress – your determination has paid off! Although some have experienced internet issues, teachers posted work home and everyone has the opportunity to continue learning, at their own pace. Most of our Year 11 and 12 VCAL students have been engaging in their learning and are having regular Webex meetings with their teachers – well done! Google classroom has also been a useful platform for accessing assignments and submitting work, along with our usual Xuno messages and lesson plans. There is always a solution, so keep making contact and ask questions when you are unsure or need some help. We are here for you.

We are looking forward to when we can work together again and VCAL students can do what VCAL do well – get out there and help our local and wider communities and environment (VCAL Projects). The day will come, but in the meantime, learning will continue, at home. Sue Macaffer VCAL Coordinator, on behalf of the VCAL teaching team.

Book of the Week If You Don’t Have Anything Nice To Say

Author: Leila Sales

We all want to be seen. We all want to be heard.

But what happens when we’re seen and heard saying or doing the wrong things? When Winter Halperin – a former spelling-bee champion, aspiring writer and daughter of a parenting expert – gets caught saying the wrong thing online, her life explodes. All across the world, people know what she’s done, and none of them will forgive her. With her friends gone, her future plans cut short and her identity in shambles, Winter is just trying to pick up the pieces without hurting anyone else. She knows she messed up, but does that mean it’s OK for people to send her hate mail and death threats? Did she deserve to lose all that she’s lost? And is ‘I’m sorry’ ever good enough?

Ni hao Chinese Language Learners of Stawell Secondary College

The Education Perfect Championships will start on Thursday 14th May! Join students from all around the world to learn languages, earning points towards awards (and even prizes!) for yourself, while helping our school to shine on an international platform. Last year, we performed outstandingly, with the below statement recording our result last year: “From last Tuesday (27/8) through to this Tuesday (3/9), all of the Chinese Language students had the opportunity to participate in the Education Perfect World Championships and we finished 16th overall in Chinese out of 1,039 schools, as well as FIRST for

Chinese in Australia for the 101-250 students’ category (by users) out of 198 schools!” Let’s see if we can keep our title two years in a row! Your Chinese teachers will give you details of the competition. Learn. Compete. Win. Let the Championships begin!
