“Lord, who will not fear [reverently] and glorify your name [giving You honor and praise in worship]? For you alone are holy. All the nations will come and worship before you because your righteous acts [Your just decrees and judgments] have been revealed” (Revelation 15:4, CSB).

We worship God when we …

PRAISE His name!

“Praise and worship music” is a phrase commonly used by churches to denote musical style. In Old Testament Scripture, however, the two words are not synonymous. Ancient Jewish thought conceived worship as an active response to revelations of Divinity’s majesty and character. (Recognizing Yahweh as the one true God—the great I AM. [See Exodus 3:14]) Moreover, our modern word worship comes from the Old English form “weorþscipe” (denoting “worth”) and from the Middle English “worthschipe” (conveying that which is highly treasured). Early on, worship could take the form of vocal or instrumental praise, but it also found expression as a silent attitude of the heart, a gift given; a heartfelt prayer or thanksgiving (See Genesis 12:8); as well as a lifestyle of obedience (See Psalm 112:1; 135:20). To know God and approach His throne—praising His holiness while worshiping Him with awestruck humility, devotion, and love—was to confess His unique worthiness.

The Bible speaks of worship in its very first book (as far back as Adam’s grandson), tying adoration to a reverencing of God’s name: “A son was born to Seth also, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord” (Genesis 4:26, CSB).

According to Scripture, at the end of time God’s name will be extolled. Revelation 15:4 declares: “Lord, who will not fear and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All the nations will come and worship before you because your righteous acts have been revealed” (CSB).

In sum, God’s Word makes it clear that we are to …

PROCLAIM His name!

“The whole earth will worship you and sing praise to you. They will sing praise to your name” (Psalm 66:4, CSB).

PERSONALIZE His name!

We are to live a praising life. Thanksgiving should be our dialect.

“I exalt you, my God the King, and bless your name forever and ever. I will bless you every day; I will praise your name forever and ever” (Psalm 145:1-2, CSB).

“I will bless you as long as I live; at your name, I will lift up my hands” (Psalm 63:4, CSB).

In addition, we are to live a praiseworthy life. In other words, our praise should be nonverbal. Someone once said, “Preach the gospel. If necessary, use words.” Holding court in Nebuchadnezzar's great Babylonian palace, Alexander the Great was presented with a Macedonian soldier who had cowardly fled the scene of battle. Asked his name, the boy rather timidly and ashamedly answered, “Alexander.” His renown military commander responded by throwing the young man to the ground in disgust and saying, “Change your name, or change your conduct!”

Those of us who call ourselves Christians must match our words with Christlike character and actions.

“He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear; and they will trust in the Lord” (Psalm 40:3, CSB).

Jesus said,esus“‘By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another’” (John 13:35, CSB).

Always remembering …

“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you demonstrated for his name by serving the saints — and by continuing to serve them” (Hebrews 6:10, CSB).

God Leads Us AlongThis is a 20th-century song that reflects ancient musical lyrics: new verses added to/echoing Psalm 23. In both contexts, our heavenly Father is seen as leading us …

AS A SYMPATHIZER,

In Psalm 23, King David depicts a sympathetic, protective, and caring, needs-attentive Yahweh. The phrase “I have what I need” (v. 1) says it all! God’s provisions for “the led” preclude intimate knowledge of the best, greenest “pastures” as well as restful, “quiet waters” (v. 2). Insists the Bible’s famed songwriter: “He leads me along the right paths”1 (Psalm 23:3, CSB).

This is divine intervention, greatly surpassing a “mere survival” lifestyle. The psalmist’s declaration, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need” (Psalm 23:1, CSB), presages the “life abundant” concept found in John 10:10.

AS A SAVIOR,

In the New Testament, Jesus tells the parable of the lost sheep (Matthew 18:10-14 and Luke 15:3-7). This is a story whose setting is, to His hearers, familiarly pastoral, while its plot leaves no doubt about the willingness to take life-threatening risks that typifies a shepherd’s heart.

In “God Leads Us Along,” George Young echoes Davidic shepherding imagery, describing God’s love for us as salvaging. Shepherds are rescuers (“Away from the mire, and away from the clay”2), restoring their threatened or harmed flocks to a safe, peaceful, healthy existence.

AND AS THE GOOD SHEPHERD!

Unshakable certainty, voiced here. Confidence in God’s merciful, beneficent character, underscored.

Not surprisingly, in John 10:7 the Lord describes Himself as “the gate for the sheep” (CSB). His very DNA is goodness! Young insists that even “flood[s],” “fire,” “sorrow,” weariness, “evils,”3 and “in the valley,” “darkest of night” experiences result in good. (Romans 8:28, validated!) Grace conquers! Foes are defeated! The “weary one’s feet” bathed in “the water’s cool flow”! Exclaims the psalmist: “He renews my life” (Psalm 23:3, CSB).

Purposeful agency is evident. “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows” (Psalm 23:5, CSB).

Joy reigns, regardless of circumstance. God’s presence is a present reality. And the glory of “Eternity’s day”: our guaranteed future!

“Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live” (Psalm 23:6, CSB). Forever!

“Green pastures” all the way!

Please pardon a personal addendum: When I was a young boy, my father, Reverend Nathan Adams Jr., served a church near Boston, Massachusetts. A gifted and trained tenor, Dad was a “singing pastor.” One day he took me with him to visit an elderly lady in a Roxbury neighborhood. He knocked on the inner-city apartment door and was welcomed in by a sweet, grey-haired saint whose Christian experience radiated on her face and in her smile. She sat in a rocking chair next to a lace-curtained window while talking with us. As the end of our visit neared, she turned to Dad and requested that he sing “Some Through the Waters.” As my father beautifully complied with her request, I saw her wipe tears from her eyes. Afterwards she exclaimed, “Pastor, that was beautiful. But you should have heard George sing it!” When Dad and I were on our way home, he said, “I hope you’ll always remember today. That dear lady was Mrs. George Young. Her husband wrote that song!” The great hymn has been special to me ever since.

Silent Night

“How silently, how silentlyThe wondrous gift is giv’n!

So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heav’n.”1

The SILENCE For centuries, a yearning nation held Isaiah’s messianic promise close to its wistful heart. Those who had endured the Babylonian exile “wept, when [they] remembered Zion.” They hanged their harps upon willow trees when their captors asked them to sing “one of the songs of Zion.” The enslaved found voicing praise “in a strange land” to be impossible (Psalm 137:1-4, KJV). Even now, as Caesar’s garrisons prowl Israel’s streets, trying their best to minimize what Rome considers to be the Jews’ rebellious spirit, Bethlehem’s citizenry endures the humiliation of harsh and oppressive occupation. In many a village hut, secretively silent and somber prayers are offered to Yahweh. David’s ancient cry finds resonance in souls that have become used to heaven’s seeming silence: “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far from my deliverance and from my words of groaning? My God, I cry by day, but you do not answer”2 (Psalm 22:1-2, CSB). Where is Jehovah? Has He forgotten His own? Nothing now but day-after-day, year-after-year, decade-after-decade, way-too-long silence!

The SETTING The tiny village of Bethlehem seems a least likely birthplace for Scripture’s promised King of kings and Lord of lords. True, King David was born here. But Jerusalem is now the seat of ecclesiastical and political authority. The inhabitants of Bethlehem know few comforts, for it is an agrarian society largely comprised of lowly sheepherders—men whose families live at the bottom of Israel’s societal totem pole, trying hard to survive. The small hamlet’s surrounding hillsides—and nature itself—seem hushed this night. All is quiet, save for the occasional barking of dogs, the bleating of sheep, the crackling of campfires, and the quiet fireside chats of shepherds “on watch.” Many of their comrades are asleep, together with their prized lambs, inside the rock outcroppings that afford caverned shelter. No one could know that such an inconspicuous, still, peaceful, unassuming, rural, and remote village, and its serene surroundings, will soon surprise the world with God’s human incarnation!

The SONG The beauty and order of the cosmos can be seen in nocturnal skies overhead. Just as “the morning stars sang together” (Job 38:7, CSB) on creation day, so too, unexpectedly, the heavens will soon erupt with supernatural praise whose content is eternal. Its source “foreordained before the foundation of the world” (1 Peter 1:20, KJV). Suddenly, the lonely silence is broken by a strange, ethereal sound that crescendos from high up in starlit worlds overhead! The shepherds’ ears have been tuned to detect the dangerous snarls of preying wolves. Now, instead, they are hearing music! Angelic voices! Heaven’s choirs descending to earth on wings of majestic “Alleluias”! The God-sent chorale is singing lyrics that shatter both the hillside quietude and ancient, heretofore unanswered messianic longings. “Good news”! The best news ever! As the surprising sky-carols crescendo far beyond hints of the melodic, this auditory phenomenon pronounces supernatural deliverance for God’s people, while revealing to men His love for man in the form of a baby! The God-man incarnate! All the shepherds are awake now, and their joy cannot be silenced. Their hearts, too, feel like singing! The song that was given to Mary when she heard that she would give birth to the Christ child finds new verses in the souls of Bethlehem’s humblest servants. (In their families’ hearts and homes, as well): “My soul praises the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Luke 1:46-47, CSB). Heaven’s child has changed everything by coming to earth to experience everything! And the good news of salvation is a song that will never be hushed! All of God’s children will someday sing, with the angels, “the song of … Moses and the song of the Lamb” (Revelation 15:3, CSB), who is our “good shepherd” (John 10:11, CSB) in that wonderful land where there is no night! Jehovah’s presence, supernaturally and permanently realized! Silent longings, silenced forever!

*NARRATOR: Light possesses an amazing quality: No matter how pervasive the darkness or how small the light, light always overwhelms darkness. (music begins) At the first glimmer, darkness has to flee. It cannot overcome the power of light.

So it was that first night. Though unseen by most of the world, the Light of God made His first appearance in a place filled with night. A new star in the East was seen by wise men. A host of angels made the announcement to a band of shepherds. The smallest light was shining in a manger in Bethlehem, and the darkness would not be able to overcome Him.
