We aempt to give honor to the cross by giving up chocolate, alcohol or tv me. And on the church calendar we aempt to give honor to the cross by adding -- events, more worship services, childrens programs, musical producons, leaving many of us to give up something else during Lent -- sleep. And somehow, for all of us, the things we subtract and the things we add during the season of Lent can make us feel just a lile less guilty about Good Friday and make us feel more worthy of Easter Sunday. I was struck recently when reading Jesuswords in John 12:44-50. Within this message, Jesus says to his people, I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness. But instead, Jesus is the light of the world, which makes his mission all about poinng the way to the Father. As I personally struggle to discover how best to lead others through Lent and towards the cross of Jerusalem, I read these words of Christ and realize that it is not our calling to take people anywhere. Doing so would simply turn our ministry into a tour guiding business, poinng to far off sighngs of Jesus that can barely be seen through the convoluon of complicated theology and Scriptural interpretaon based more upon cultural influence than the Spirits revelaon. No, our job is simply to point to the light within each person that we encounter so that he or she can see where God is already moving in his or her life. Our job is to point to the light so that he or she can find his or her own path to Jerusalem, a path that will look much different than yours or mine. Our job is no different than that of John the Bapsts, to declare loudly that we are not the light, but that we are poinng to the light. Lent is not about giving up anything, but rather, embracing the calling that each of us has to gain a beer understanding of how we are to point to the light of Christ. Lent is not about adding more events and services to the church calendar, but about being the church in the world instead of in the pew. Even in this dark season of the church, the me when the altar will be cloaked in black and we will remember the tomb devoid of natural light, we are called to show the world the reality of spiritual light. As is human nature, we have made Lent all about us, about our spiritual journey, about what we receive at the foot of the splintered and bloody cross. But if we will get up off our knees, and turn around to see the cross shining for the rest of the world, we will be able obediently to fulfill the mission of Christ and the mission of the church in poinng people to the light that will surely come, even aſter two days of darkness in the tomb. The Light of Lent

On Wednesday, March 6, we will gather at Seaside to receive the Ash of repentance on our foreheads. And thus we will begin the season of Lent. We all know what Lent is about, or we think we do. We boil it down to a sacrifice that brings scarcity into our lives, at its core just a time to give something up in order to make ourselves feel better about our excess the rest of the year. We attempt to give honor to the cross by giving up chocolate, alcohol or tv time. And on the church calendar we attempt to give honor to the cross by adding -- events, more worship services, children’s programs, musical productions, leaving many of us to give up something else during Lent -- sleep. And somehow, for all of us, the things we subtract and the things we add during the season of Lent can make us feel just a little less guilty about Good Friday and make us feel more worthy of Easter Sunday. I was struck recently when reading Jesus’ words in John 12:44-50. Within this message, Jesus says to his people, “I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness. If anyone hears my words and does not obey them, I do not judge them. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.” Right there, in black and white (or perhaps red and white if you have your old school Bible handy) Jesus tells us what he is, and what he is not. Jesus himself says that he is not the judge of the world, but the light of the world. You see, if Jesus were the judge of the world, it would make his mission about us. But instead, Jesus is the light of the world, which makes his mission all about pointing the way to the Father. As I personally struggle to discover how best to lead others through Lent and towards the cross of Jerusalem, I read these words of Christ and realize that it is not our calling to take people anywhere. Doing so would simply turn our ministry into a tour guiding business, pointing to far off sightings of Jesus that can barely be seen through the convolution of complicated theology and Scriptural interpretation based more upon cultural influence than the Spirit’s revelation. No, our job is simply to point to the light within each person that we encounter so that he or she can see where God is already moving in his or her life. Our job is to point to the light so that he or she can find his or her own path to Jerusalem, a path that will look much different than yours or mine. Our job is no different than that of John the Baptist’s, to declare loudly that we are not the light, but that we are pointing to the light. Lent is not about giving up anything, but rather, embracing the calling that each of us has to gain a better understanding of how we are to point to the light of Christ. Lent is not about adding more events and services to the church calendar, but about being the church in the world instead of in the pew. Even in this dark season of the church, the time when the altar will be cloaked in black and we will remember the tomb devoid of natural light, we are called to show the world the reality of spiritual light. As is human nature, we have made Lent all about us, about our spiritual journey, about what we receive at the foot of the splintered and bloody cross. But if we will get up off our knees, and turn around to see the cross shining for the rest of the world, we will be able obediently to fulfill the mission of Christ and the mission of the church in pointing people to the light that will surely come, even after two days of darkness in the tomb. Lenten Devotional & Sermon Series: Divine Friendship This year Lent begins on Wednesday, March 6th, Ash Wednesday. As a part of our continued Lenten Spiritual Formation Initiative, we invite you to journey with us through a devotional called Divine Friendship. During Lent Jesus invites us to spend time with him and to renew our friendship with him. This encouraging book reminds us that we are beloved children of a God who deeply desires friendship with us. The meditations help us realize that through friendship with God, we will satisfy our hearts’ yearnings. In addition to reading the devotional book as a congregation, the Sunday morning sermon

series will follow the book so that readers can receive an extra word from what they are reading during

the week. Also, there will be an option for readers to attend a discussion group each Monday morning to

unpack the readings and sermon from the prior week. We will offer the book for a discounted price of $7

and can be purchased in the church office during the week. Readings begin on Wednesday, March 6th.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." Proverbs 3:5-6 Thank you to the many who stopped by

our information table on Sunday, February 17th to learn about the exciting plans for a new organ. We are looking forward to raising the needed funds and then installing an instrument we and future generations can enjoy. If you want more information please see me or Janette Schroeder and we will gladly discuss the campaign with you. If you missed hearing the Joyful Noise Children's Choir in February they will sing again on Sunday, March 3rd. We have 14 fabulous kids who love to sing! I'm very proud of them! Ash Wednesday is March 6th and our choir and the Jubilee Handbells will lead the worship service at 7:00 PM. We hope you will join us as we begin our Lenten journey. Our small bell ensemble, the Seaside Belles, will share their music on Friday, March 8th with the residents of Arbor Landing. We always enjoy playing bells and visiting with this group. SAVE THE DATE: TICKETS FOR THE EASTER CANTATA WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THURSDAY, MARCH 21ST AT 9:00 AM. Our cantata, "A Journey to Hope" by Joseph Martin, will be performed on Palm Sunday, April 14th at 4:00 & 7:00. This cantata is based on spirituals and we are excited to partner with the choir of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church for this performance. The music is wonderful and the choir is enjoying learning these songs. Get your tickets and be ready for an uplifting "Journey to Hope".

Please extend a warm Seaside welcome to our newest members.

Why a new organ? Why now? Just like our cars, washer and dryers, stoves and other electronics……organs wear out. Our organ is between 25-30 years old and we are beginning to experience sound problems. It is time to upgrade our organ just as we do our phones and other devices that enhance our lives. Our organ was bought for the Fellowship Hall space when Seaside was worshipping in that area. With the addition of our new sanctu-ary, we can now house a larger, more advanced instrument to enrich our worship experience. Technology has changed greatly in the past 25 years and you would be amazed at the new organs and what sounds they can produce. We believe now is the time to be proactive in acquiring the funds needed before our organ breaks down. We are also blessed with 2 competent organists who believe a new instrument will not only attract new members but new musicians to our Music Ministry. Envelopes will be available for those who would like to donate or to take home as you prayerfully consider this campaign. Donations of $750 or more will be listed in our Memorial/Honorarium book. Please start praying with us as we undertake this bold new cam-

paign. There is an opportunity for everyone to contribute and “Build

An Organ”.

Getting To Know New Faces at Seaside

Nancy Camino Biography: I am Nancy Camino, the second of five children. I was born in Washington, DC and raised in Wheaton and Rockville, Maryland. I attended Catholic school through the 8th grade and then attended Robert E. Peary High School where I took commercial courses. My dream was always to become a wife and mother but I also wanted skills I could use to obtain a good job. After high school I worked for the pediatrician who took care of me and my siblings from the time we were born. I worked there until my son was 6 months old and then I became a stay at home mom. When I was expecting my daughter my husband and I moved to Texas where we lived for 7 years. After a failed marriage I returned to Maryland

and worked for an orthopedic surgeon. Six years later I met and married my wonderful husband Guy Camino and moved to Northern Virginia, we will be celebrating 34 years of marriage in June. In Virginia I worked for a mortgage company supporting the CEO and EVP until they were bought out and then I worked for various internet companies. In 2002 we moved to Sunset Beach and have been extremely happy here. One of the first things we did was look for a church to attend, a place that offered the opportunity to be active in a variety of ways and also grow in our faith. Seaside was the first church we visited and well I guess as they say “the rest is history.” I have been a member of the UMW, Golf With A Mission, facilitated WISP (Women In Study & Prayer) for 6 years, was the Youth Coordinator for 4 years, and my special joy is doing the Children’s Sermon at the 9:30 service. I have taken Disciple classes and attended a variety of bible studies. My new role at Seaside: Is Administrative Assistant which I am very excited about. My duties will include tracking weekly attendance and running reports; maintaining and updating membership information; following up with potential new members; maintaining a list of Worship Assistants; tracking Honorarium and Memorials; updating the online directory; directing the volunteer assistants; sell event tickets and books and coordinate other special projects. What I Do To Unwind: I enjoy reading, crocheting, golf, spending time with my husband and friends and relaxing in my recliner with our sweet cocker spaniel Grace on my lap. Something People May Not Know About Me: I love to dance! I started taking dancing lessons at the age of 4 and continued until I was 20. At around 10 years old I remember taking the train to Baltimore for an audition for the Mickey Mouse Club, the train ride was great, the audition, well…not so great! Choreography was my favorite part of dance which I did a lot of in high school for our school plays and variety shows.

Rick Burge

Biography: I am Rick Burge. I was born and raised in High Point, North Carolina. My wife, Kitty, and I have been married for 17 years. We have a blended family of 4 wonderful children and 7 grandchildren. My mother who is 95, still lives in High Point. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (GO HEELS) with a BS in Business Administration. I served 4 years in the Coast Guard. In 2015 I retired from the residential construction business. Kitty and I visited Sunset Beach many times and decided that it was the place where we would retire. We joined Seaside UMC in 2016. What is your role at Seaside: I am the facility manager at Seaside UMC. My duties include maintaining the

physical church and its grounds. I meet and consult with the trustees, pastors and other church staff. What do you do to unwind: I enjoy reading. John Grisham is my favorite author. We have recently started playing pickelball. I have always played golf and it is my favorite sport. Something people may not know about me: Most people don’t know that my given name is Rickey, named after Branch Rickey

the former general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Branch Rickey was responsible for breaking the color barrier in baseball

when he signed Jackie Robinson to a professional contract. My dad played with Jackie Robinson in Montreal.
