Comptroller CombsRecognizes El Paso

Community College forTechnical Education;

Honors Local Governmentsfor Financial Transparency

Texas Comptroller Susan Combsmet with college leaders and localofficials in El Paso today torecognize achievements made intechnical education and praisefinancial transparency efforts fromlocal governments. The Comptroller has awarded theEl Paso Community CollegeDistrict a total of $107,025 fromthe JET (Jobs and Education forTexans) Career and TechnicalScholarship Fund, which providesgrants to fund scholarships forstudents enrolled in approvedtraining programs. For the currentschool year, the college has$53,513 in scholarship funds to usefor students preparing for severalhigh-demand occupations where acertificate or an associate degree isa basic prerequisite. “Students in the El Paso area areamong thousands benefiting fromJET funds to earn the certificatesand degrees that will enable themto better provide for themselvesand their families,” Combs said. In December 2009, the TexasComptroller’s office issued $2.26million to 13 institutions in the firstround of Job Building Fund grants— a program with a total of $10million in grants to award — tohelp finance equipment purchasesfor new career and technicaleducation programs that support

fast-growing industries throughoutthe state. El Paso CommunityCollege received $52,445 in grantfunds for the automotivetechnology program to helppurchase and install adynamometer that will enhancehow students are trained todiagnose and repair automobiles. “This is the first time that El PasoCommunity College has had adynamometer, which is used to testengines and transmissions undersimulated driving conditions,”Combs said. “The investment willbetter prepare students looking foremployment as many auto repairfacilities in El Paso look formechanics trained to operate thenew high-tech equipment.” Also in 2009, Project ARRIBA(Advanced Retraining &Redevelopment Initiative in BorderAreas) in El Paso received$500,000 in Launchpad Fundsfrom the Comptroller. A matchinglocal government investment willhelp Project Arriba, a jobs-trainingprogram, serve students in theUpper Rio Grande Valley withlong-term, high-skilled trainingand counseling services necessaryto access jobs in hard-to-filldemand occupations.
