Tom Hinchman
HHS President
Welcome Hinchman nation! I hope all of
you had a blessed Easter with your families and
friends. I always think of Easter as the beginning of
spring, but Mother Nature can’t make up her mind
this year. 80 degree weather one day and then frost
the next! I’m sure some of you wish you were
dealing with frost instead of snow!
Can you believe that it is almost time for the
25th Anniversary Hinchman Heritage Society
event this year in Troy, Ohio, just north of
Dayton! Please join us for this milestone get
together from Wednesday, June 20, through
Sunday, June 24. Just come for a day or so if you
can’t be there the entire time! Fill out the
registration material included in this newsletter and
send it in. If you haven’t done it already, call the
Comfort Suites in Troy today and make your
reservation. Remember the special rates end on
May 30. Hosts Sam and Christie Brown are
working hard to make this Silver Anniversary HHS
event something to remember. Make it part of your
family vacation this year! Remember, to help with
expenses, the cost of your banquet meal on
Saturday evening will be refunded by the HHS if
you:
1. Are an up to date paid HHS member and
2. Attend the business meeting Saturday right
before the meal
I was saddened to hear about the passing of
Tom Gibson, one of the charter members of the
HHS. He is survived by his wife Joan, and
daughters Alicia Kimmel, Bonita Taggart, and
Christie Brown, our host this summer in Troy. He
and family have been active members over the years
and he will be missed. When you see the long list
of Hinchman deaths in this newsletter, you realize
how short life is and we are not guaranteed
tomorrow. All the more reason to get together and
fellowship as often as we are able!
It is with mixed emotions that I announce
that Mary Hinchman will be retiring as Editor of the
Hinchman Heritage Society Newsletter. Mary has
been the editor as long as I can remember and has
lovingly and tirelessly worked to share and
communicate with us the heritage and current news
of our family. We all need to thank Mary
Hinchman for all the hard work she has done
putting together the newsletters, social media
communications, making calls, sending letters, etc.
She is irreplaceable, but we will be needing
someone to assume the duties as Editor. I know
there is someone in the family that has the skills and
gifts to take over. Please be in thoughtful
consideration and email Mary at:
[email protected]. Or you can email
me at: [email protected]
In the meantime, continue to email Mary with any
current events, family news, etc. and also let her
know how much you appreciate what she has done
over the years!
As we say down south, see y’all in Troy in
June! Be there to wish our matriarch Esther a
Happy Birthday at 103.5!! Safe Travels!

Don't Be Just a Copycat
When you see genealogical information on the Internet about one of your ancestors, do you just say "Wow!" and
copy that to your family tree? When other family members offer their research, do you just say "Wow!" again?
Information like this can give direction to where you can find "facts" and "sources", but it can't replace the actual
sources like marriage, birth, and death records, as well as other important certificates, deeds, wills, immigration
records, etc. A personal example follows:
Family Tradition and Some Facts: According to family tradition, my great-grandmother Elizabeth Steffan born
5-28-1836 in Bavaria came to America from Germany with her father and married George Wilhelm on 8-26-1858.
The 1870 census showed the Wilhelm family living in Mercer Co., Ohio. Included in the household was a Charles
Stevens [Karl Stephan] born in 1800 from Bavaria.
These Must Be The Facts, Right? Many years ago a distant cousin genealogist who was a Mormon with numerous
records available gave information to me about our great-grandmother Elizabeth Steffan. According to my cousin,
Elizabeth was the daughter of Karl Philipp Stephan who married Henriette Caroline Dreher on 12-20-1832 in
Evangelisch, Kirchheimbolander, Pfalz, Bayern. Philipp Stephan and his wife Caroline Dreher christened a daughter
Elisabeth on 5-15-1836 at Evangelisch, Kirchheimbolander, Pfalz, Bayern. Included in the Wilhelm household in
1870 was Charles Stevens [Karl Stephan]. George and Elizabeth’s second son was named Charles and their daughter
was named Caroline Ellena. All appears good!
Searching and Finding New Information: Actually Elizabeth, the daughter of Karl Philip Stephan and his wife
Carolina Dreher, remained in Germany and married 4-10-1860 Alexander Tiesse. Carl Philip Stephan, the husband
of Carolina Dreher, did not come to American, but died in 1860 and was buried in Bayern, Germany.
New Information: Recently I located Karl Stephan 50 and Elise Stephan 22 who arrived in New York City from
Havre (France) on the ship Galena on 8-9-1858. My great-grandparents married seventeen days later on 8-26-1858.
Further research shows Elizabeth was most likely the daughter of Carl Stephan and his wife Elisabetha Eiler who
was born 5-28-1836 [exact date of my Elizabeth!] and baptized 6-5-1836 at Evangelisch, Odernheim, Pfalz, Bavaria.
Carl Steffen [s/o Christian Steffen] and Catharina Elisabetha Eiler were married 5-31-1830 at Evangelisch,
Odernheim, Pfalz, Bavaria.
Much of the above information was obtained through Ancestry.com www.ancestry.com and the Mormon Family
Search www.familysearch.org. You may copy the research that others offer, but each person needs review what
they have and find sources for each bit of information about their ancestors and / or family members. You may
find similar names, dates, and places about your ancestors including that from The Hinchman Family in America,
but they may only be theories until proven differently. Someday I may even find something different about my
Elizabeth.

Cincinnati Chili - ingredients
2 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons cumin
3 tablespoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 tablespoon salt
1 medium onion, finely chopped
4 cloves garlic, crushed
1 can (12 ounce size) tomato paste
1 can (15 ounce size) tomato sauce
4 cups water
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce (optional)
4 bay leaves
1 ounce block unsweetened baking chocolate
1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper (optional)
Cincinnati Chili - directions
Add olive oil to a large (4-6 quart) pot over medium high heat. Add ground beef and the next 8 ingredients. Stir while
cooking until meat is lightly browned. Add the tomato paste and tomato sauce along with the water, vinegar, Worcestershire
sauce, bay leaves and chocolate. For more "fire", add the ground cayenne (careful).
Bring to boil then reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Stir, occasionally to prevent sticking. Serves
six to eight with listed accompaniments.
Cincinnati Chili - cook's notes
This is a delightful spin on more traditional Chili recipes. This type of chili was originally developed by Greek immigrants.
The Cincinnati Chili parlors (Empress, Gold Star, Skyline, etc.) are ubiquitous institutions of Cincinnati and Indianapolis.
There are no beans in this chili and it is usually served over spaghetti.
To Serve: Cincinnati chili lovers order their chili by number "3, 4, or 5-way". Make this a fun meal; cook spaghetti, shred
some cheddar cheese, chop some onions, open a can of kidney beans. Let your guests (family) create their own final product.
3-Way. Serve chili on deep sided plate or shallow bowl over cooked and drained spaghetti. Top with finely shredded cheddar
cheese. This is called a three-way.
4-Way. Sprinkle chopped raw onions on chili before adding cheese.
5-Way. Add cooked kidney beans to the top of the chopped onions before adding cheese.
History: Macedonian immigrant Tom Kiradjieff created Cincinnati chili in 1922. With his brother, John, Kiradjieff opened
a small Greek restaurant called the Empress. The restaurant did poorly however, until Kiradjieff started offering a chili made
with Middle Eastern spices, which could be served in a variety of ways. He called it his “spaghetti chili.” Kiradjieff’s “five
way” was a concoction of a mound of spaghetti topped with chili, chopped onion, kidney beans, and shredded yellow cheese,
served with oyster crackers and a side order of hot dogs topped with more shredded cheese.

Clendenin died on September 14, 1851. Dr. Ulysses, William’s son, is the ancestor of Sharon Tebben.
“Rich Creek, VA, July 21, Robert A. Clendenin Esqr., Cass County Michigan, Silver Creek PO
Logan County VA, July the 19th 1851
Dear son & daughter, after our best respects to you and Children this will let you know that at the present time we
are in tolerable Health, thank the giver of all good for continued favors to us and I hope this will find you and
family well, altho I have little reason to hope from the reports I hear that all is well, for I am told there is no doubt
but Robert has the Consumption and if it is so I think it is seldom cured.
I began this the 19th and this is the 20th and tomorrow is mail day, therefore I am trying this morning to write, but I
am hardly able to set up and I am forced to make my letter short, but will tell you there is more Sickness here than
ever was in one summer and there is a great many Deaths. I think the friends is all well as far as I know at this
time. Ulysses gets a plenty to do. He has this spring and summer wore out one good Horse and has nearly wore
out himself, he has more sick to attend to than he’s able to attend.
I would often write more but my situation is such at this time that I cannot. My hand trembles so I must conclude
at this time. I want to hear from you how you are and how you are doing and direct your letter to Rich Creek post
office, Logan County Virginia. This from William and Nancy Hinchman - to Robt. and Amanda Clendenon.”
