A&M - a class company - Joe Summers The record business became a part of Joe Summers when he was seventeen as a ware- house worker for Capitol Records in Detroit. He went on to work in a local record store, returned to Capitol as an inside salesman and finally hit the road with Decca Records at the age of nineteen. Sum- mers graduated quickly in the business. From salesman to assistant branch manager to branch manager to regional manager and finally to national sales manager for Motown. Summers took the job of national sales manager for A&M (Canada) two years ago. He believed that Canada, only a stone's throw away from Detroit (Windsor) was very similar in the marketing of records. He learned very quickly that this was a com- pletely different market. He was asked what he found that was different in Canada: SUMMERS: I think probably the thing that hit me most was the lack of excitement and enthusiasm. It was almost like a sin to get excited about anything. RPM: Did you find they didn't trust you because you were an American? SUMMERS: No ...I think they thought he's just another American. I remember my first trip to the west and when I got back someone asked me what I thought. I said thank God I've only got two strikes against me - I'm an American and I'm from eastern Canada. If I'd had three strikes they'd prob- ably have shipped me back in a box. MONTREAL DISCOSHIGH ON O.C. SMITHThe power of Montreal discotheques hasbeen felt with the "incredible" sales pictureof O.C. Smith's newest Columbia single,"La La Peace Song". Radio play for thesingle hasn't been too exciting but as oneobserver put it "If we had discos in the restof Canada like we have in Montreal, we'dhave more beat music on the air. Discos areso powerful in Quebec province they canforce radio play and actually demand thatstores stock the product."Smith is being given stiff competition in theU.S. by the Al Wilson release on the RockyRoad label. Canadian distribution is handl-ed by Quality Records. The Smith single was -produced by JohnnyBristol who co -wrote the "Peace" songwith L. Martin.

QUALITY & BROADLANDHIT COUNTRY TRAILQuality Records: publishing arms, Shediacand Qualrec have combined their marketingexpertise with country producer/performerGary Buck's experience in the countrybusiness and have come up with Canada'snewest country label - BROAD LAND. Where is Canadian country music going??????Somone once said that the greatest progressis the desire to progress. Another indicationis the degree of the desire to progress. For years, the Canadian country industry

has had the desire to progress. Just howgreat that desire is is another question. It doesn't do anything for the industry tosimply wish something would happen. Youcould ask what progressive steps have beentaken to create a strong Canadian countrymusic industry in Canada. I wonder if any-thing really solid has been done to move

". . . the prophets of doom, the messengers of

mediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the new genera-tion of competent, creative, confident artisans andby all those of preceding generations who havealready demonstiated their freshness of mind, theirtalent and their capacity for inspired leadership."

ahead. In what is to be a "do or die effort", RPMis holding Big Country to bring togethercountry people and to help bring aboutthe truth of what the problems are, andto allow the country industry to find theanswers if there are any.Four years ago, the country music industryin Canada was given a unique opportunityto find itself. Canadian content on AMradio was regulated to 30% Canadian con-tent. In the past four years there has beenlittle to show for that opportunity, otherthan a number of artists who have beenable to make a living at country music, but little more.Lacking leadership, togetherness and aunity of purpose, the industry sometimesshows very little life. It has been referredto as a loud, vocal minority of complain-ers.Somewhere, progress must enter the pic-ture, or the industry will go on believingthat the country industry in Canada isover -glorified, over -rated and "a waste oftime".The nose count will take place on Novem-ber 22nd and 23rd at Big Country. Justwhat and who is the country music indus-try in Canada should emerge during thosetwo days. It could be so small that it isn'tworth worrying about, or it is an industrythat wants to progress and prosper.

There is no talent in Canadian countrythat is big enough to cure the problemsof country music. There is no Canadiancountry hit that will bring the Canadiancountry music indUstry to the fbrefront.

Although the direct authority of the Queen -in Canadian affairs lapsed with the estab-lishment of parliamentary government, aconsiderable degree of personal influencehas been sustained through public affectionand respect. Today the Queen's officialrole is limited to participation, in personor through the Governor-General, in suchceremonies as the opening of Parliament, the assent to bills and the granting ofhonours. Essentially, the Queen now is thesymbol of the unity, continuity and trad-itions of the Commonwealth. In Canada the title of Her Majesty is:"Elizabeth the Second, by the grace ofGod of the United Kingdom, Canada andher other realms and territories Queen,Head of the Commonwealth, Defender ofthe Faith." Canadian country people look to Nashvillefor inspiration. Little do they realize norcare, about the unity of purpose thatcaused the progress of Nashville and theNashville artists. Little are they aware ofthe problems that face them as a groupand seldom do they sit down and roll uptheir sleeves to find answers. The Canadian country music scene is noth-ing but a sad imitation of what is beingdone in Nashville. The Canadian countryindustry lacks originality and unity, andsuffers from a lack of genuine purposeand progress.Big Country won't have all the answers, but it will be a unique opportunity toface the problems, and from this couldcome the answers.Last year's Big Country was a baby stepon the way to building something inCanada. This year's Big Country will bethe acid test. We either get together toget it together or we take a closer look atCanadian country music - and the Cana-dian country music industry - and makeup our minds one way or another. It should be a historic two c14/s.

rock writers so frequently use to describea SRO situation - fantastic outasight in-credible far out red hot ridiculous mons-trous unbelievable sensational dynamitetremendous - have been battered to im-potency in the acres of print excess of re-cent times, to the point where none ofthem is really effective when applied tothe 1974 Elton John Tour, which mightcorrectly be termed the most successfulNorth American tour ever by a Britishartist. The impact quite literally has beendevastating. It is above and beyond theconventional cliche. It must be viewedfrom a perspective of its own.As much as one must distrust those tritelittle labels that become attached to cer-tain acts, Elton's prominence in the late'74 rock scene is so pervasive that it's dif-ficult to avoid comparisons with theBeatles. Certainly no act since the Beatleshas been able to whip up such box officeand performance fervor. Attendance re-cords are being smashed regularly andevery gig thus far has sold out withinhours. All over America, nobody is hotterthan Elton John.Prior to this year, it was generally agreedthat Led Zeppelin was the top British actworking Stateside. And time may welldemonstrate that Zep's decision not totour here this year was a turning point intheir career. While Page and company stay-ed at home working on a new double albumentitled "Physical Graffiti", Elton went onthe road to the roar of mass momentum. His popularity, enormous before the tourbegan, has surged even higher to a levelwhere it is doubtful if even a re-formedBeatles could overtake him. As RonnieHawkins observed recently, Elton JohnIS the New Beatles. Unlike the old Beatles,Elton came up the hard way.Graphic proof of this rise can be found inattendance figures at almost any majorstadium in North America. In Toronto, forexample, Maple Leaf Gardens' AttractionsManager, Peter Larsen, reports that in hislast appearance there, in early October1972, Elton drew some 13,000 people. Two years later, 19,000 tickets - the ca-pacity of the Gardens - were snapped upin less than two hours by fans who'd stoodin line all night. That's the equal of thedrawing power of any musical act ever tohave performed at the Gardens. Larsen, who's now urging Elton to play a secondconcert, says that the man could have soldout four shows with no trouble. "In Toron-to", claims Larsen, "Elton John is as bigas anything in contemporary music. He'sthe King".We're going to be hearing much more ofthis Elton John v. the Beatles stuff.Which adds more irony to the fire of El -ton's recent involvement with John Lennon.Elton's contributions to John's new single,"What Ever Gets You Through The Night",were a considerable boost and it's shaping

up to be Lennon's biggest hit since thedemise of the B's. In return, John troopedoff to Caribou Studios in Colorado to addcomposer's authenticity and backgroundvocals to Elton's forthcoming single, "LucyIn The Sky With Diamonds". The flip side

Elton John

of the single, to be released in a month orless, is Elton's rendition of Lennon's "OneDay At A Time" from the "Mind Games"album. You can't avoid the fact that thismarks the first time that Elton has record-ed tunes not written by Bernie Taupin andhimself (with the exception of "HonkyTonk Women" on the "Live" album.Maybe it's that old musical mutual admira-tion malady.

BACKSTAGE AT ELTON'S GIGHere we are backstage at Vancouver'sPacific Coliseum, presently occupied bysome 17,500 Elton John freaks patientlylistening to Kiki Dee and her band. Thingshave settled down again after the distur-bance caused by the unexpected arrivalin the heart of the stadium of seven silver

ALBUMREVIEWS

BRUCE COCKBURNSalt, Sun And TimeTrue North TN 16-HUnfortunately Canada lacks a star system, but we would like to nominate as one ofits shining stars and one who almost de-mands international recognition - BruceCockburn. The Cockburn talent is incom-

parable and here, producers Bruce An-thony and Eugene Martynec have captur-ed Cockburn's lyric, music and vocalmagic in the same simple, and seeminglyeffortless manner in which a Cockburnconcert is presented. Although Cockburnis thought of as a folk artist, he gives ussamplings of his guitar virtuosity with jazzand abstract pop. Two instrumentals ofparticular interest are "Router Sa Bosse"with Jack Zaza on clarinet, and "SeedsOn The Wind", with Eugene Martynecon synthesizer. A package of pure Cock-burn - no frills and no detractions.

POINTER SISTERSLive At The Opera HouseBlue Thumb BTS8002-MFor those of us who tend to think of thePointers as a fad, this album comes as some-thing of a shock. "Live at the Opera House"is four sides of solid music, reaching numerouspeaks -including "Let It Be Me" and "YesWe Can". Programmers should sift throughthe fifteen tracks with great care, there aredelights to be found therein.

RANDY NEWMANGood Old BoysReprise MS 2193-P

Given the kind of lyrics Newman comes upwith, by rights he should be a huge culthero. But he's not and it will take advent-urous people indeed to spread the gospel ofRandy. "Good Old Boys" is a co-ordinatedverbal attack on prejudice and inequalityof opportunity which hits its eloquent peakwith "Rednecks" ... "Maddox may bea fool, but he's our fool". So he is, so he is.

FRANK MILLSSonogram LSG72005Mills may never be remembered for pushingback the musical frontiers but he is a con-sistent source of well produced MOR mater-ial with professional polish. This albumshould be a source of delight to programmers

looking for quality instrumentals with aCanadian content factor. For some reasonthis collection sounds to us almost like amovie soundtrack, a job which Mills coulddo admirably.

DORY PREVINWarner Bros BS 2811-P

As in her past albums; Dory makes noattempt at commercialism, preferring insteadto concentrate on getting out her own exper-iences. The result is a strange blend alter-nately vocalizing companionship and lonli-ness. There is probably little of interest hereto anyone but free formers. Sales will dependalmost completely on FM airplay and wordof mouth.. "Lover, Lover, Be My Cover"and "Atlantis" best exemplify Miss Previn'sstyle and message.

JOHNNY RODRIGUEZSongs About Ladies And LoveMercury SRM1-1012-Q

A relatively unknown, Rodriguez posse'ssesa powerful and sincere voice which is put touse here on a well chosen set of compositionsranging from the country flavoured "I JustCan't Get Her Out Of My Mind" to thatold standby, "I Can't Stop Loving You".Back-up is consistently strong and tastefulthroughout making this a good libraryitem for good music stations and countryoutlets seeking a healthy touch of sophis-tication.

VAN McCOYLove Is The AnswerAvco AV 69002-MA solidly produced instrumental set onwhich Van McCoy and the Soul CitySymphony serve up some good music chest-nuts like "Touch Me In The Morning" alongwith black oriented tunes such as "BackStabbers" and "You Are The Sunshine OfMy Life". A particular delight is the rendi-tion of another chestnut, "Proud Mary". Astrong instrumental album which could fitnicely into any softer sound format.

TIM BUCKLEYLook At The FoolDiscReet ps 2201-PThere are a lot of influences at work here, everything from early sixties protest singerto Booker T and the MG's. The result isconfusing to say the least, Out of the chaoscome a couple of choice morsels including"Tijuana Moon", with back up a la IsaacHayes and a soaring vocal boost from Ven-etta Fields, Clydie King and Sherlie Matthews. In total the album is often dischordant, sometimes aggravating, made palatable onlywhen all the elements unite properly, atwhich time the result is praiseworthy indeed.

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACKThe Hard Part BeginsA&M SP 9016-W

One of the first quality conscious Cana-dian soundtracks to come down the pike- and it happens to be country to boot. The flick has already made a hefty impacton the public and the soundtrack shouldadd to the importance of this rare venture.A&M have culled a couple of singles fromthe set - Cliff Carrol's "The Way Of Life"and "Prospecting For Jesus" and a mostimpressive duet by Louise Rockwood andZeke Sheppard on the title song. Unfor-tunately the Rockwood solo of the titlesong is being touted as the "A" side - weprefer the flip. It has more balls - and itmakes more country sense.

DISCO ACTION RESTRICTEDTO LA BELLE PROVINCEThere has been much talk in recent weeksabout the importance of the discothequesin the U.S. but as far as Canada is concerned,Quebec province is the only market that'simportant for this type of disc play. Thereare more than one hundred active and success-ful discos in Montreal and hundreds moresituated throughout the entire province. They came into their own about five yearsago and it's only recently that it was dis-covered that Quebec discos really influencethe sale of records.RCA's Ed Preston has found that "there isalways larger audiences and better exposurein radio, but disco action is increasing, especially in Quebec where we had greatsuccess with 'Rock Your Baby' by GeorgeMcCrae. He broke heavy through discoaction."A&M's national sales manager, Joe Sum-mers, is exceptionally high on the Quebecmarket and the disco business in particular. He noted: "We moved more than eightthousand pieces of the last Nino Temposingle in Montreal alone and it was due mostlyto the popularity of the single in the discos."The big bugaboo for successful discos inOntario is the stringent liquor laws. Thereare a few active discos in Toronto, one whichinvested in a five thousand dollar system.Scott Richards, national promotion mana-ger for MCA Canada is of the opinion thatthe eighteen to thirty-five crowd are lookingfor good beat records and that discos con-centrate on this type of record. Says Rich-ards: "If there were more discos in Torontowe'd sell a lot of records, because peopleare interested in music and they'll pick it upfrom the discos. One of the things that dis-courages club owners from going into cannedmusic is the misunderstanding of the LiquorBoard. I think discos can be very important. We used the recent Martha Reeves singleas a disco work record and it worked butit would have worked much better if therewere more discos."Larry Green, national promotion managerfor WEA, says: "Exposure in Quebec discosis tremendous, especially for danceablemusic. Any additional input to stimulatesales is of value. I think that discos willespecially reach the 18-35 demographics."Peter Taylor, promotion for United Artists, finds that "Record exposure is very good indiscos in Quebec, especially funky sounds.Toronto, and Ontario, in the last two orthree years, has shown improvement in expos-ing records in discos, although it's still not

. as good as in Quebec."There's apparently going to be some relaxa-tion on the Ontario Liquor Laws, but howthis will effect club owners going intocanned music isn't known at this time. Ifthey did become involved in canned musicthey would have to restrict themselves tothis form of entertainment. The Musician'sUnion frowns on the mix of "live" andcanned music.

GROWING MARKET FORCAPITOL'S STEVENSCapitol/EMI Canada recently released a newsingle by Suzanne Stevens, "House Full OfWomen", a Norman Gimbel/Charles Foxcomposition. The song was originallyrecorded by Lori Lieberman and is includedon her second Capitol album, "Becoming".Bill Bannon, national promo for Capitol, reports good initial action for the single, particularly in Quebec Province. Pdp pro-grammers from coast to coast are showinga definite liking for this bright new talent.

A &M continued from page 1

to our customs and method of marketingrecords and tapes?

SUMMERS: I'd say it took me a year to findout where everything was. When I first camehere people told me that Canada was differ-ent. I really didn't believe it. I didn't acceptit. Today I agree, it's different. You have somany different regions and different waysof working each region. The basics are allthe same but Canada is very regionalized.

RPM: How do you think you can changethis situation or bring them together?SUMMERS: I think we have to have peoplewho are more knowledgeable of the business.Just like Gord Edwards said in his recentinterview with you. Canada needs more pro-fessional people in the record business. Inpromotion, record people, rack merchandis-ers, buyers ... everywhere. I read a lineonce - "We need record people instead ofpeople in the record business". I think it'sgetting there but there is such a void com-pared to what it should be.

RPM: Do you push new product more thanyou do the established artist?

SUMMERS: No ... you try to lay differentplans for product that goes to differentavenues. Obviously with a hit act you getbetter distribution. But with a new act youhave to create a demand to the consumer thanget -that mass distribution everywhere.RPM: How come A&M has had so muchsuccess with the non -established Canadianartist?

SUMMERS: I think our company has recordpeople in it and they do have an excitementabout the business. Our people know whatthey're doing. We have this built in enthu-siasm ... drive and energy.

RPM: How do you get the fire lit underyour people? Do you give them a pep talk?SUMMERS: Everyone kids me about thenumber of memos I send out. I just hopethey'll pick something out of the memothat they can work on. We don't have tohave pep talks ... just keep them informedof what everyone else is doing. It's a matterof keeping the lines of communication openand letting them know that head office isbacking them. I want to know what they'redoing and what the industry is doing generallyRPM: Do you work very closely with thepromotion department?SUMMERS: Very closely.RPM: Do you think that salesmen should bepromotion men as well?SUMMERS: No. I think it's really difficultfor a man to do an effective job as a salesmanthen try to wear too many hats. We regardour salesmen as record merchandisers. Tome, a record merchandiser (salesman)should be able to walk into an account andhelp him sell more product.

RPM: By helping the retailer sell moreproduct, you don't mean with discountdeals?

SUMMERS: We don't have deals. We haveprograms. It's the total concept of trying toreach the ultimate goal, whether it be to theconsumer or to break an act or whatever.Unfortunately some people believe that apromotion is to buy at a cheap price andsell for $1.99. That's not a promotion. Tome it has to be a total concept program.

RPM: Your policy on singles is pretty looseisn't it?

SUMMERS: We own every single out thereuntil the consumer buys it. They all comeback to us, if they're not sold. Every record

we sell is guaranteed. Every record, singleor album, sitting in a warehouse because itdoesn't sell, eventually ends up back herewhere it's scrapped.

RPM: You mean you don't deal in deletes?SUMMERS: We scrap every record. Nodeletes at all.(A&M.is one of the few companies thatdestroys all unsold product. Gerry Lacour-siere, Director of the Canadian operation forA&M, began this policy when he opened inCanada and it has since become a policywith their parent company.)

RPM: Do you have your salesmen call onthe accounts serviced by rackers?

SUMMERS: We're trying to do it moreand more. We've just completed a programin the Maritimes just like that. Where ourregional marketing man, our salesman, branch manager and our promotion manspent several weeks servicing rack accounts. It was so successful that we have appointedDavid Brodeur as regional marketing mana-ger. As an example he would go into Sask-atchewan and take rack inventory. He doesmarket research and passes his informationback to the local sales rep so that he can gointo the rack account and point up whathe believes would bring him more sales. Ithink we have to get more involved in thatend of it. Sometimes we make money inspite of the jobbers or the accounts. Whenwe can get past that point of maybeit's a lack of communication and, when we can prove that we can all makemoney, we'll be into a new ball game.RPM: Do you put on a special effort tohave product available when an act is play-ing in a certain area?

SUMMERS: Definitely. That's what it's allabout. Take the Nazareth tour for instance.I've personally called almost every majorrack user in the country and told them ...'Look, I need your distribution. I needNazareth in every location, otherwise whatgood is our tour and what good is my adver-tising. Give me that distribution. Let theconsumer decide if he wants to buy therecord.'

RPM: The Nazareth happening is veryinteresting. I thinkthat's what the business is all about. If youhave the product, be it a Nazareth, KeithHampshire, Gino Vannelli, or you're tryingto get Lorence Hud off the ground or what-ever ... there's a certain pride in that' I didsomething.'

RPM: A&M has now graduated into a com-pany that has something for everyone ...pop, folk, rock and country. Do you find thisposes any problems for your salesmen whomight prefer a certain form of music overanything else?

SUMMERS: Yes, that's human nature.Again, you have to have that fine degree ofbeing a professional and doing a job withwhatever you've been given. Music is veryemotional so you have to have your prefer-ences. If everyone likes one thing it's a loteasier to go out and sell it. The challengecomes when you can do a good job onsomething you're really not tuned intopersonally.RPM: Do you foresee any major changes in

The ProgrammersA WEEKLY FEATURE OF RPM DESIGNED FOR CANADIAN RADIO PROGRAMMERS.MAIL, PHONE, OR TELEX YOUR INFORMATION TO REACH US BY 5PM TUESDAY.

More country for Toronto-CHOOTorontonians living in the core of the citycan now enjoy the sounds of country. CHOORadio, located in Ajax, fifteen miles east ofthe city, have changed their pattern (fromsunup to sundown) and are now crankingtheir 10,000 watts into most of Toronto. The pattern, in fact, has introduced them toa potential audience of 3.2 million. Theyalso cover a good portion of the GoldenHorseshoe, north to the most northerly tipof Lake Simcoe and east to a point severalmiles east of Cobourg.

Justin McCarthy, the thirty-seven year oldpresident and owner of Community Corn-munications Corp. (CHOO Radio), hasdiscovered the excitement and listening pow-er of country music and completely revampedhis twenty-four hour programming format. With the exception of a couple of hoursallowed for religion and ethnic programming,CHOO is now a country convert.Heading up the programming staff is PaulScott as program director. Scott was for-merly with CKFH in Toronto. He also doesthe drive show (4-7PM). Brian Barker does

/"My Kind Of Country" host Bill Johnston

the wakeup chores (6-10AM) followed byBrian Perkin (10AM-1PM). Andy Parkslooks after the 9PM to midnite show withNeil Sutherland doing it all night frommidnite to 6AM.One of the powerhouses for the weekendis country performer Bill Johnston who hosts"My Kind Of Country" a laid back FM typeof show. Johnston has been associated withcountry music for the past fifteen years '

and fronts a group known as Second Step. The power of CHOO was recently felt inOshawa when the station went on a threeday on -air promotion for Oshawa's HomeWeek - using only Canadian talent. It wasobvious by the thousands of country fanswho showed up for the big country showthat Oshawa and surrounding area weretuned into country - and CHOO.CHOO Radio is now programming an aver-age of 40% Canadian content but both Scottand Johnston have found a serious shortageof Cancon product over the past few months. There are some record companies, not yetaware of the importance of the station.

CHOO program director Paul Scott

record company approaches?SUMMERS: I can't foresee any changes. Iwould like to see companies educate theirpeople so it's of mutual benefit right downthe line. I think there should be greatercommunication between all the accounts. You know, there's no secrets in this busi-ness - everything always comes out -everyone always knows what's going on.I'd like to see more people, more dedicatedto what they're doing. I'd like to see themspend more time feeling out their markets.RPM: What value do you place on charts?SUMMERS: Well, as a sales tool ... theonly way you're going to sell records ishave a number on a chart, which is veryfrustrating in itself. I've always worked onthe basis of ... you get it played on theradio and let the consumer get exposed toit - yo0 get the record in the store and letthe consumer make the decision. If itdoesn't sell, you take it back. It's veryfrustrating to walk into an account and tellthe guy that a certain record is on the airand he asks you if it has a number. You say'No, but it's on the air.' He says, sorry, weonly have thirty baskets and if it hasn'tgot a number we don't buy it.RPM: Can you see this attitude changing?SUMMERS: A bit, but not enough.RPM: Are discotheques selling records foryou?SUMMERS: I think they will. I don't find itnow. In Quebec it's a different story. We cansell records strictly through disco play. Onerecord that received very little airplay, soldmore than eight thousand copies in Montreal, primarily from disco play. It's not happen-ing in Toronto yet, but I think it will.Toronto will follow the trend. It's becom-ing the fashion in the States and I thinkdiscos can become very important to therecord business.

RPM: You mentioned Quebec ... do youthink the English Canadian market will evercome up in sales to that of the FrenchCanadian market?

SUMMERS: The Quebec market is a veryexciting market. That's wh.t excitementis all about, and it reminds me of some mar-kets in the States where people get excitedabout a record and things happen and thingsmove. I would like to see the same thinghappen in English Canada, from a retail level.RPM: Why do you think there is so muchexcitement in Quebec?SUMMERS: It could be the emotionalismof the market itself. The general feeling ofgetting excited, being excited ... a genuineexcitement. There's a difference between afalse excitement that doesn't mean anything, and a real excitement. I think they reallyfeel the excitement of the business.RPM: They obviously have a star system. Doyou think English Canada will develop theirown star system?SUMMERS: I think we will have one. I thinka lot of people are trying to do the rightthing. There are a lot of dedicated peoplewho are genuinely trying to do somethingfor this business, and I think we will getthere eventually.

You mentioned the RPM interviewwith Gord Edwards. He felt that record com-panies were out of touch. How do you feelabout that charge?SUMMERS: I think some record companiesare out of touch. There are other companiesthough, who are really on top of what's going

on and there are those who are trying to bemore in touch. If we're going to be in therecord business and be successful and con-tinue to grow we have to become moreinvolved.RPM: Is business good?

SUMMERS: Business is excellent.RPM: Has the vinyl shortage caused anyreal problems for A&M?SUMMERS: Our problem hasn't been vinylas much as it has been production schedules. It seems there aren't enough presses to pro-duce all the records we need.RPM: How's the tape business and whatpercentage is it of the business?

SUMMERS: Tape business is excellent. Itruns anywhere from 25 to 30% of thebusiness. Cassettes are still behind 8 -trackof course, but it still looks like it couldbreak open. The increase in tapes has beengood and if the Quebec market ever catchesup with the rest of Canada on tapes, it willprobably equal Ontario in total dollar value.RPM: Is A&M into long boxes?SUMMERS: No, but I think that's the aven-ue of merchandising tapes. I've looked intoour own long box with the option of puttingit out and giving it to other people. Payingthat much money for tapes, people want totouch the product. I wonder, and I'm openfor facts and figures, I've always gone underthe premise that if you're going to lose 2%in pilferage, if you do more business you'restill going to lose 2%. It doesn't go up to80%. It's more dallars but it still comes outto 2%, and I welYome the racks and theaccounts saying let's put it out and let's tryto sell some product, rather than hiding itin a locked cabinet.RPM: Does the future look good for Canadain the record business?

SUMMERS: I'm very optimistic on the futureof Canada as a whole and the record businessin general. I think there's no limit as to whatwe can do up here.

The fleet of limos were inadver-tently directed into the wrong end of thestadium and they had some notable dif-ficulty in reaching the backstage area.Starship One waited at the airport whereauthorities for once had been hip enoughto undertake customs and immigration in-spection on board the aircraft. Then it wasinto the limos and a motorcycle escortdowntown and right into the wrong door. Now secure in his dressing room, the manis looking a picture of good health andwell being, dipping the cheese biscuits in-to a tasty green concoction on a tableabundantly stocked with imported Per-rier mineral water from France and Dom

Perignon champagne. He is comfortablyattired in blue denim highheeled shoes, yellow lurex sox, jean overalls, a T-shirtand gold pendant, topped off by an Ori-ental -influenced vest adorned with blackfeathers. The omnipresent glasses haveyellow lens in blue frames.

I remark that Elton does not have thetypical squashed -out appearance of manyof his rock contemporaries. "I'm different.I don't stay up all night," he laughs. "Iget up early and play tennis".The chat soon gets around to Elton's newsingle, "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"."I haven't heard the mix yet but I'm look-ing forward to it. We had a lot of fun mak-ing it".The next Elton John album will be a"Greatest Hits" package planned for No-vember release, "to catch the Christmasmarket". MCA, his U.S. distributors, arecontemplating the re -issue of Elton's firstalbum, "Empty Skies", which is relativelyunknown in this part of the world. "But notyet," insists Elton. "I'll have so much pro-duct on the market that people will be sickof me".Although over -exposure would hardly seemto be a threat to his career (the public hasdemonstrated an insatiable appetite for hismusic), MCA is holding off on the release ofthe next studio album, "Captain Fantasticand The Brown Dirt Cowboy". The trackswere put down at Caribou Studios in Color-ado: the thrust of the LP, in Elton's words,is "the story of our rise to success, fromthe beginning until now".Elton appears to be delighted with JohnLennon's return to the chats. "It's great, isn't it," he says. "The single looks like beinghis biggest in a long time. I'm very pleasedabout it".Elton is hustled off to his private dressingroom to prepare for the show. Outside, theaudience is gripped with anticipation. Fifteenminutes later, a grinning Elton emerges, bop-ping around in a black vinyl jumpsuit andmatching skull cap equippped with scores ofmetal spikes holding luminous coloured balls.Welcome the Rock Spaceman. The messageis flashed to the stage, the lights dim, theroar begins. It has fanatical intensity. EltonJohn is on.The white spots zoom into the red stage, the roar is renewed, Elton sits down at hisSteinway Grand draped in a black velvetcover with sequin embroidery and slamsthat left hand into the keyboard. The soundsystem is superb built to overcome theprecarious accoustics of such concrete cav-erns. It was the finest stadium sound I'veever heard.Dee Murray, Dave Johnstone, Nigel Olssonand Ray Cooper continue to be one of themost underrated bands in rock - their in-dividual recognition has been slow in reach-ing a fitting level. They are absolutely firstclass, the ideal complement to Elton's songs. The extended instrumental workouts ontunes like "Burn Down The Mission" werebrilliantly tasteful. The show is Entertain-ment with a capital E.Elton John is in fact, one of the few real en-tertainers this music has produced since itsearly days. He is a showman, singer andmusician par excellence. Of a class uniquein rock 'n' roll. His concert was a dynamicexercise in poise, precision, and perfectionattained. One veteran deejay commentedthat it was the best concert he'd ever seen. The problem remains that it's difficult tofind fresh words sufficiently free of the pol-lution of hyperbole but still meaningfulenough to emphasize Elton's uniqueness.
