CRANBOURNE LIONS PROJECTSUPPORT PARTNERSHIP WITH SECASA – MONASH HEALTH.

Supporting Woman of sexual assault

Hi Trish Chandler here . As discussed at our zone meeting the topic of rape is such a sensitive topic and not one publically talked about for fundraised for. There is no government assistance for and a great need in all community's. I hope your club will assist our club by running a drive project through your club to help these women and yes men too. Due to the confidentiality of this area I am social worked trained and Kerry  is nurse trained we have been given concent through the sexual assault units to deliver the kits toforensic units which are securely located in 5 hospitals from mornington Frankston Dandenong Casey and a Cranbourne unit. The kits must be packed by us in Cranbourneand delivered by us. The cloths and kits can be of any brand. Financial donations can be placed into activities account under rape victims and donors surname.

Contact has been made with Michelle Scott’s one of the team leaders at “SECASA” (South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault) Monash health who is a forensic nurse and counsellor for both women 95% and men 5% who attend triage at a hospital presenting as being assaulted presumed Raped in which an intensive invasive examination takes place. It is after this process that the 2 locations where the forensic testing is carried out and the 5 SECASA hospital counselling hospital clinics require our help through service. This was the vision from one forensic nurses view at a local hospital

SUPPORT ONE

This is the underwear that no woman wants to wear. And it's notjust because it's a plain cotton sports bra the colour of Pepto- purple It's because this is the underwear we give to survivors of rape and sexual assault after we take their own underwear asevidence. We take their nice underwear, their favourite underwear, their cute underwear, their comfy underwear, their best-fitting bra, their 75-dollar designer bra, their weekend bra, their work bra. And we take it away from them while wearing gloves, and drop it into a paper bag, and seal it with evidence tape and write their police case number on the outside, and send it to the state crime lab, and they never see it again.

Page 8: Volume 22 Issue 2 – AUGUST 2020 · program that cares for them doesn't have -- or won't buy -- or can't buy -- clothes for them, or don’t have in their size, or family cant drop

But here's the kicker: That boring sports bra is WAY WAY better than what some survivors get when they're discharged. Some women have ALL of their clothes taken for evidence. Shirt.Undershirt. Pants. Bra. Underwear. Even their socks. And if the local forensic/sexual assault program that cares for them doesn't have -- or won't buy -- or can't buy -- clothes for them, or don’t have in their size, or family cant drop of any, they get discharged in hospital scrubs. Currently supplies are low. And grippy red hospital socks. And postpartum white-mesh hospital underwear. And no bra. Ever seen a woman who's just been raped, just had a three-hour forensic exam, just had every surface of her battered body swabbed and photographed and inventoried for the police, ever seen her walk out of a hospital wearing oversized hospital scrubs -- ---and her arms wrapped tightly around her chest, ashamed, because she doesn't have a bra to wear? I have. And I absolutely refuse to ever see it again.

Above is $150 of underwear from Kmart I bought this underwear myself for our patients, because i didn’t want to see another woman walk out of a south east hospital again with no dignity or clean clothes on. This was enough for 12 women. That’s $12.50 per victim Go to Kmart or Coles or Target or best and less, and buy clothes you'd feel comfortable in curled up,safe at home, watching TV. And donate them to Cranbourne Lions who will pack into sizes and distribute them to forensic sites most needed. We ask for new not second hand. tee-shirts and track pants that are about $30.00 per victim That’s New underwear, a comfortable bra, a comfortable pair of track pants, a soft hoody, squishy socks -- all of these things can help make a woman who has survived a violent rape feel like a person again. A person. Not a victim. Sizes 10 to 24 required Because it's a long walk down that hallway, out of the hospital, and back into the world. At least she can be comfortable as she takes each step. Pick up can be arranged locally or items can be dropped off to various addresses in Cranbourne, Narre warrenor Tooradin.

SUPPORT TWO When a victim leaves the forensic hospital often, they feel dirty and disorientated and just want to go home to feel safe. Sometimes they cannot return home and do not have money on them because police or an ambulance has brought them in.

Lions club would like to support these victims by supplying them with a Rape survival care kit. Kit contains • A cosmetic bag • Hand sanitizer • Lip Balm • Tooth Brush and tooth paste • Hair tie and comb • Chocolate • Face and body wipes • Pen and pad • Mirror • Tissues The cost of this survival care kit was $15 per victim. SEE SAMPLE BOX

A woman was at her hairdresser's getting her hair styled for a trip to Rome with her husband.. She mentioned the trip to the hairdresser, who responded:" Rome ? Why would anyone want to go there? It's crowded and dirty.. You're crazy to go to Rome .. So, how are you getting there?""We're taking British Airlines," was the reply. "We got a great rate!""BA?" exclaimed the hairdresser.. " That's a terrible airline. Their planes are old, their flight attendants are ugly, and they're always late. So, where are you staying in Rome ?""We'll be at this exclusive little place over on Rome 's Tiber River called Teste.""Don't go any further. I know that place. Everybody thinks it’s gonna be something special and exclusive, but it's really a dump.""We're going to go to see the Vatican and maybe get to see the Pope.""That's rich," laughed the hairdresser. You and a million other people trying to seehim. He'll look the size of an ant.Boy, good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You're going to need it..."A month later, the woman again came in for a hairdo. The hairdresser asked her about her trip to Rome"It was wonderful," explained the woman, "not only were we on time in one of BA's brand new planes, but it was overbooked, and they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine were wonderful, and I had a handsome 28-year-old steward who waited on me hand and foot. And the hotel was great! They'd just finished a £5 million remodelling job, and now it's a jewel, the finest hotel in the city. They too, were overbooked, so they apologized and gave us their owner's suite at no extra charge!""Well," muttered the hairdresser, "that's all well and good, but I bet you didn't getto see the Pope.""Actually, we were quite lucky, because as we toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder, and explained that the Pope likes to meet some of the visitors, and if I'd be so kind as to step into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet me.Sure enough, five minutes later, the Pope walked through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down and he spoke a few words to me""Oh, really! What'd he say ?"He said: "Who the F*** did your hair?"

IN THE GARDEN WITH LINDA

In temperate climates, August is prime potato-planting month. Seed taters can be purchased now, and those you’ve had in storage since autumn will have already 'chitted' (sent out new shoots). Toward the end of the month plant them into soil enriched with plenty of compost and rotted manure. Aim for a pH around 6–7. Potatoes are members of the Solanaceae family and like a slightly acid soil.

Also plant peas, leafy greens, salad greens, radishes, turnips, beetroot, carrots, broccoli, cabbages, broad beans, spring onions, leeks, globe artichokes and frost-hardy herbs.

Finish planting bare-rooted trees, shrubs and vines this month. Bare-rooted perennials such as rhubarb, asparagus and horseradish should also be planted before the onset of warm weather.

Try growing edible flowers as a colourful ingredients in salads. My favourites include Johnny Jump Ups (Viola tricolor), nasturtium, calendula and borage, though the flowers of almost anyedible herb can be eaten. If in doubt, check online or in a reference book as to a flower's edibility.

Olive trees are lovely plants to have in the garden and they’re widely adapted to climate zones throughout inland and southern Australia. An interesting way to combine the olive’s beauty and productivity is to grow a row of plants as a hedge. Choose a single, dual-purpose variety such as Manzanillo or plant a mix of varieties favoured for either oil or fruit.
