There are so many moving parts that have to fall in place before we can start acting like a real club again. I doubt if we will see much of it by the magic May 1 st date. We continue to plan “no contact” events for May even though the offshore tournament is still a go. Our longer-term plan is to cram in as many activities as we can once all the parts fall into place, so stay tuned. I know everyone is getting cabin fever and I encourage all of you to get outside and on the water if you can do so safely. Pat and I have had some great days on the water and sand with some great weather and catches. Not much boat traffic down here and no one on our beaches makes for a pleasant day out. If Flagler parks and beaches are still closed, consider driving all the way to Volusia for a day. Our beaches are open to fishermen and women and my neighbor is on the beach everyday catching fish. The city parks on the west side of the ICW in Ormond and Holly Hill are open for a picnic lunch, a stroll and there are fishing piers open at the Granada Bridge and the east end of LPGA Blvd. If you can find a spot on the shore along High Bridge or Walter Boardman Road, anglers are catching reds and trout and the snook sharpies are on the bridge every day. Bait shops at High Bridge and Granada are open and have live bait. Finally, if you need a destination, stop at the Copper Bottom Distillery on Beach Street in Holly Hill and pick up some hand sanitizer for a small donation. There is light at the end of the tunnel, so stay with us as things start to improve and as always, I ask you to stay safe and be careful. Up till now we haven’t lost anyone to this terrible disease and I would sure like to keep it that way. See you all on the water. By the time you read this, “stay at home” may be history and we will be in the “new normal,” whatever that is and some of us may even be back at work. There are so many moving parts that have to fall in place before we can start acting like a real club again. I doubt if we will see much of it by the magic May 1st date.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHTSPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

The Sponsor of the Month is Hammock Bait and Tackle on A1A across from Bings. They are a new Annual Sponsor of the Club and are working to serve all fishermen in the area by having live shrimp, mud minnows and fiddler crabs. They have a variety of frozen bait and bait for offshore as well. Hammock Bait and Tackle provides a lot more than bait such as Rod and Reel repair and all tackle needed for fishing. Stop by and check them out.

May Fishing ForecastCapt Jim Britton

saltytalesfishingcharters.comWow! That is all I can say about the state of the world right now. Looking back at several of my forecasts, I have been reminded of difficult times which have befallen our community. Tropical storm force winds and near misses by hurricanes have tested our resolve in the past. The current pandemic has done much more than that, however. The one constant, throughout all of our recent challenges, is that our community continues to stand up and act appropriately. I would like to thank everyone reading this message for doing their part in supporting our community, our local businesses, and of course our fishing club. Together we will weather this “storm” also! Fortunately, we have been able to fish throughout this event and finally we can get back to surf fishing as well.Offshore anglers should have no problem bringing home the meat, this month. When the weather permits make a run out to 80 – 120 feet of water… the mahi bite will be on fire! Troll naked ballyhoo, plastic skirts, or a combination of both for the best success. Make sure to drop one or two long lines with a cedar plug or dark skirted lure for tuna also. The bottom bite will continue to be hot for mutton snapper, trigger fish and cobia also. When available drop live sardines for the best

action.Hopefully, the beaches remain open for our surf anglers. If so, May will produce some quality pompano, whiting, bluefish, and sea trout. Most of these fish will not be able to resist a live sand flea. If sand fleas are difficult to find, try a double rig with shrimp on one hook and a strip of Fish Bites on the other (I prefer the crab scented orange strips). If we return to normalcy and the piers open in May, bring out the big gear, as the tarpon and kingfish will start to show up also.Early May mornings will be a great time to get out on our inshore waters and cast topwater lures. Several large sea trout, snook and redfish will be around structure looking to ambush easy prey. Target grass edges, docks and submerged oyster bars at high water. If the water is low, work the edges of the ICW (especially those with high shell banks) for the best success. As the day heats up switch over to a soft plastic bait on jigheads and target the bends in our numerous creeks. Fan cast the complete bend to find where fish are holding. For live bait fishing substitute a live free lined mullet for a top water bait and live shrimp or mudminnows for the soft plastic baits.

Weighmaster Report for May

March’s Fish of The Month was seatrout, won by Jeff Fehrenkamp. I haven’t heard back from him yet to determine which of our sponsors he would like to receive his $50 gift certificate from.

April’s Fish of the Month was Pompano.

May’s will be Amberjack to go along with our monthlong offshore contest.

If you ever have a problem weighing in at one of our weigh stations you can call me and come by my home, if I am available.

The overall species leaders and full point standings are updated at the end of each month on our website http://sportfishbase.com/members/, and in the latest Chum Line publication delivered by e-mail.

Thanks for everyone’s support, and if you have any questions, please let me know. Chuck Radloff, Weighmaster - (386) 569-1584
