Pat Via was received into mem-bership by transfer from Messiah Lutheran, Wesleyville, on Sep-tember 9, 2018. She was bap-tized, confirmed, and received her first communion on Trinity Sunday in June of 1960 at Au-gustana Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C. She then took her newly minted faith to Denver, San Diego, to Bethany Lutheran in Erie, and to Messiah in Wes-leyville. Now, she lives next door to us at Barnabas South in Brevil-lier Village. The air smells like grapes

In his poem “October”, Robert Frost reflects on the transient beauty of autumn: “O hushed October morning mild,/Begin the hours of this day slow…/Slow, slow!/For the grapes’ sake, if they were all,/Whose leaves already are burnt with frost,/Whose clustered fruit must else be lost--/For the grapes’ sake along the wall.” The poem is not just about grapes, of course; it is also a meditation on the fleeting nature of this mortal life. There’s something about the shortening days, the brisk winds, and changing colors of October that inspires these sorts of thoughts. In these parts, this is also grape harvest time. Some of you are working long hours picking and processing the fruit. I think that most of the grapes around here become grape juice and grape jelly, but some also becomes wine, and a smaller portion of the harvest is sold locally as table grapes. I know one woman who drives up north to visit her family in Erie every year, and returns with baskets of Concords to share with her friends—and to enjoy them herself. She miss-es that very particular flavor and mouth feel of the fresh grapes; it tastes like home to her. Several of Jesus’ parables take place in vineyards—which would have been a familiar set-ting to his listeners. Jesus also must have known that smell of grapes in the air as harvest time grew near. Vineyards can be a metaphor for the kingdom of God, and sometimes, vineyards are a metaphor for the people of God. In the book of Isaiah, God sings a sad love song to his vine-yard. God had labored hard and lavished tender care on his beloved vineyard, but instead of a good harvest of righteousness, it yielded bitter wild grapes of injustice and bloodshed. In the gospel of John, Jesus is the true vine, and we are the branches. We can only bear good fruit when we are connected to the true vine. When we are not connected to that source of abundant life, we wither. But every time we receive the bread and wine of Holy Communion, we are nour-ished and revived and re-connected, so that we can bear good fruit in our lives. Whenever you breathe in that smell of grapes, whenever you snack on some fresh Con-cords, whenever you put some grape jelly on your toast, whenever you enjoy some local wine, remember: We are God’s beloved vineyard. We are the branches, and Christ is the vine. As his abundant life flows into us, we are able to produce good harvests of justice and mercy, all for the sake of this heartbreakingly beautiful world that God so loves. Your sister in Christ, Pastor Jean

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2:00 P.M. AT FAITH

All creatures great and small are welcome! This simple service will include scripture, prayer, a

song or two, and an individual blessing for each animal in attendance. We will gather outside on

the lawn, weather permitting, or inside the building in case of rain. All animals should be leashed,

crated, or otherwise appropriately contained.

The Lutheran Church is often known as a “singing church” by the gathered people of God. We have a rich tradition of history, brought to life by the music and art of the church. Al and I have enjoyed the PBS Series of Ancient History through art and mu-sic of early religions, which recently aired. Last year the Refor-mation was presented on TV and films during Sunday School here at Faith. Music was transformed during that time and Martin Luther certainly spearheaded freedom in the hymnody of that age. I can just imagine the joy and freedom people felt. Of course if you have seen the films, movies, etc., you know the Reformation was not only about the music and art of the day, but had many hardships for Luther and populace as well. “We do well, therefore, to integrate music and art from many times, places, and peoples, moved by the same Spirit, to observe the Reformation on October 28.”

This is the time of year that time seems to speed up, the leaves turn to beautiful colors, the smell of the grape vineyards is awesome as one travels along; squash, pumpkin pies, and fruits of this bountiful season find itself on our tables. It is also a time of gorgeous sunsets and fall flowers. Preparation of Music from the choir, organ, guitar, piano, and congregation all fill the sanctuary. Committees plan, confirmands learn about their church, new experiences. Come be an active part of Faith Lutheran. Come, by this same Spirit, be alive.

CONFIRMATION MINISTRY AT FAITH

FALL ANNUAL MEETING

Everyone is encouraged to attend and participate in selecting church council mem-

bers and nominated representatives at one of our annual fall congregational meetings

the weekend of October 20 and 21 following each worship service. Members

elected to these positions will represent you in making significant decisions concern-

ing the mission and ministry of the church.

Also on the agenda for the meeting is the presentation and vote on the proposed

2019 Unified and Debt/Capital Improvement Budgets. These proposed budgets act

as a blueprint for ministry for the upcoming year. All members are encouraged to

review and vote on these budgets. Those wishing to review the budgets prior to the

meeting may call the church office and request a copy.

Just a reminder, only voting members may vote for the nominees or on the budget.

The church constitution defines a voting member as a confirmed member who has

communed in the congregation and has made a contribution of record to the congre-

gation during the current or preceding calendar year.

The Secret Keeper – by Kate Morton – Monday, October 8, 2018 @ 5:30 PM (2 books) During a picnic at her family’s farm in the English countryside, sixteen-year-old Laurel Nicolson witnesses a shocking crime, a crime that challenges everything she knows about her adored mother, Dorothy. Now, fifty years later, Laurel and her sisters are meeting at the farm to celebrate Dorothy’s ninetieth birthday. Realizing that this is her last chance to discover the truth about that long-ago day, Laurel searches for answers that can only be found in Dorothy’s past. Clue by clue, she traces a secret history of three strangers from vastly different worlds thrown together in war-torn London—Dorothy, Vivien, and Jimmy—whose lives are forever after entwined. A gripping story of deception and passion, The Secret Keeper will keep you enthralled to the last page. The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club – by Gil McNeil When her husband dies in a car crash--not long after announcing he wants a divorce--Jo Mackenzie packs up her two rowdy boys and moves from London to a dilapidated villa in her seaside hometown. There, she takes over her beloved Gran's knitting shop--a quaint but out-of-date store in desperate need of a facelift. After a rough beginning, Jo soon finds comfort in a "Stitch and Bitch" group; a collection of quirky, lively women who share their stories, and their addiction to cake, with warmth and hu-mor. As Jo starts to get the hang of single-parent life in a small town, she relies on her knitting group for support. The women meet every week at the shop on Beach Street and trade gossip and ad-vice as freely as they do a new stitch. But when a new man enters Jo's life, and an A-list actress moves into the local mansion, the knitting club has even more trouble confining the conversation to knit one, purl two. Anything Is Possible - by Elizabeth Strout – Monday, November12, 2018 @ 5:30 PM Here are two sisters: One trades self-respect for a wealthy husband while the other finds in the pages of a book a kindred spirit who changes her life. The janitor at the local school has his faith tested in an encounter with an isolated man he has come to help; a grown daughter longs for mother love even as she comes to accept her mother’s happiness in a foreign country; and the adult Lucy Barton returns to visit her siblings after seventeen years of absence.

Oh yeah...we will also have a Halloween party too! With so much fun it is hard to think we have any time to do any learning, but no wor-ries....we are already learning so much. The preschool is getting better with scissors and printing our names. We have been working on sorting and colors too! Pre-K is already working on printing letters and the sounds they make! Both classes are learning to work together, following class rules and being kind. A very special thank you to Carolyn F. for all her school donations!! We will miss having her as a substitute teacher, but we are so happy for her. God Bless you all, Debbie Bemis

Local churches, organizations and individuals will be descending up-on service agencies across Erie County, October 13 to complete projects both inside and outside. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish in one four-hour shift from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. This is a great opportunity for two things to happen: first, it’s a way to meet a tangible need in our city and show people in the neighborhood what it looks like to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Secondly, it’s a great way to introduce someone to Jesus. This event can be approached as an inviter opportunity to encourage someone to serve with us who does not know Jesus. Both ways, God is glorified and lifted. Register at serverie.com! Keep up with ServErie on Facebook for the latest information about upcoming projects.
