Our goal from the very begin-

ning was to perfect the paper, we set

out on a journey to become a more

serious, well crafted monthly

publication. Our

second goal was

to have those

who tagged

along to learn

how to work as a

whole, and how

to become

skilled writers

that will flourish in the college

atmosphere.

Along with those

who go beyond

that as well. As

the year ends we

watch or mem-

bers go home

and wish them

the best of luck,

and are replaced

with fresh new members. Those of us leaving ask ourselves the question,

“How will the next crew change the

paper?” But we know that any changes

are for the better and are built from the

ideas we offered. As a current senior

member for this years paper, I felt as

though it was only right, to ask the

B.T.S staff and teachers their over-

view and insight on the papers growth

and improvement.

Round Up of the Year

Coming Round the Hill

By: Michael H.

The 2009

through 2010 school

year is close to an end,

and as we approach we look back on the

“highlights” of the Up

on the Hill newspaper.

It has been an odd year

for the writing staff. For

starters we began this

project as A-North, and

are finishing it as Boys

Treatment Secure (other

wise known as B.T.S).

We left our home on the hill, and entered the

valley. For those who

are unaware, this is only

the second year our

publication has existed.

Our writing staff began

this year with only half

of the original crew. This for the teachers,

and senior writing crew, meant a new ex-

perience.

This paper has become for me and hopefully for others, a sign of pride and

accomplishment. It is a nice thing for those

who have been told they can not do any-

thing to hold a work of their own in their

hands at the end of every month. I myself

am very proud to be a part of this project,

and enjoyed the freedom. When writing an

article you were never told how to write

a story or exactly what to write, within

reasonable terms. But that was not all I

took from it, I took the education of knowing how to work with people. I

now am able to hear peoples side and

except their input. I hope that those to

come will also grow to have the same

appreciation for this publication. When-

ever I think of my progression in the

paper and how the things I learned will

carry on to the college life that I can not

wait to be apart of, but I also will miss

seeing the end result.

Marijuana

Why we should have legal marijuana

By: Ben I.

I think marijuana should be legal for everyone. The reason why I think that is, because if alcohol can be legal for people

over 21 then marijuana should be too, plus it is safer. Marijuana is a really popular drug, all around the world; it is also very re-

laxing for many people. Another reason why I think marijuana should be legal is because a lot of people enjoy it and it helps

people that have pain. It also helps people enjoy their food and makes things a whole lot more fun. It helps people when they get

stressed out and irritated. People don’t die from marijuana it is a lot better than alcohol and hard core drugs. More people die from alcohol and hardcore drugs than marijuana. It helps cancer recovery, migraine, pain relief, and to help AIDS patients. It has

been proven that marijuana has an enormous medical usefulness. In fact, marijuana can be useful for almost everyone.

Effects of Marijuana and Music

Places marijuana and music can take you

By: Dustin D.

I am writing a double article on marijuana, its effects on people, and why it should be legal. Part two is on music and its

effects on people and how it could be a healthy alternative instead of illegally smoking marijuana. I love music, all kinds of mu-

sic. I have high respect for people in the music business but I think that marijuana should be legal is because I feel it has no

negative effects. I think it is a huge stress reliever. It could be used for medical purposes as it is today but since it is not legal, I

have some advice for my other marijuana smokers, and its name is music. I have come to learn over the years that music takes me to the same place as the so called “Drugs” does and it is legal so you don’t have to go to jail like I had to. I think music and

marijuana also can be a very negative thing if you let it be. All the stories that if you smoke or listen to the wrong music you’re

bad or a criminal are wrong! It all depends on how you do it and what you do with it. But to all my fellow smokers just hold off

until marijuana gets legalized and use music because it is a great alternative to use. Since I have been in children’s village I have

learned that music takes me to the same place and makes me feel just as good. Music will never be a crime so dig in.

A Handful of Thanks to the Waterford Foundation

Support for the project “Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul part IV”

By: Wendy Cook

The Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul part IV project first started by listening to my students in all Language Arts classes as they desired to want to read more short stories and poems like the previous books in the series Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul. I believed that as

a Special Education Teacher it was my passion to help all students attending school in a detention building the ability to become interested in

reading. Finally, I decided to write a grant for a class set of the Chicken Soup for the IV.

Upon receiving the award, the students and I were able to read aloud the different stories and poems from that book. At the end of each section, students were able to choose their favorite short story or poem to reflect on. The reflection papers were amazing as each student had an opportunity to share what they learned and how they could apply different strategies to real life situations from reading “Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul part IV.” Each student also shared how amazed they were to believe that other teenagers faced the same challenges and

were able to overcome their similar situations. Some I learned statements were included in the CVS school newspaper.

Concluding this project, is student/teacher book that was created to say “Thank You to the Waterford Foundation” for supporting and

awarding Ms. Cook and her Language Arts classes a class set of the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul part IV.

Once again, thank you for supporting Children’s Village School Language Arts classes in J-Building!

Criminal Activity

Hard life

By: Emarion F.

Criminal activity is an ongoing thing everywhere. Any place you go more than likely

there will be some type of criminal activity going on. For me it all started in the sixth grade. I

used to manipulate people into doing things I did not want to do myself. The reason I did this

was because I used to fear the consequences, and I was selfish enough to put other people in

jeopardy.

I believe criminals take steps with their crimes. I was on that same road myself, now I

am at Children’s Village as a consequence to my crimes. Most criminals don’t get lucky as I did because I could have been

facing major consequences. I think about my mistakes every night, and I thank god for giving me another chance to turn on a

different road.

My lawyer gave me the good news about my situation and that’s when I decided to make a change in life. Criminals

do things to get attention and make their self feel higher than another person. And they get a good feeling when they feel like

they are in control. So, the two things that I think drives criminals the most are MONEY and POWER. Criminals think life

consists of money and power and nothing else.

But I will say this; money and power don’t mean too much if you don’t have freedom. I am taking this 9 to 12 months

to think about all of my mistakes and I am coming up with ways to prevent my self from getting in this position again. For ex-

ample I think about all the people I hang with and who’s real and who’s not. I also have a sheet that I look at everyday with my

life plans on it. So everyone who is a resident at Children’s Village that is reading this, I ask that you take some time to do the

same thing. The future is in our generation’s hands. What are we going to do with it?

It’s all about the Benjamins

Money on your mind?

By: Eli W.

There is a brand new Benjamin coming out! If you don’t know what a Benjamin is you must be crazy. Well, it is the

100 dollar bill. Guess when it comes out! Well do you wonder why they are making it? It is pretty interesting. Think about

some things that have to do with it. For example, think about what it is going to look like, and if there is more than a purpose to

it than you may have already heard. This might be an interesting topic to hear about. At least it should be if you love money!

The U.S. Treasury is where the new Benjamin’s are made and the Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is the person in

charge of the makings. The reason they’re making this new hundred dollar bill is to avoid counterfeiters from counterfeiting.

The Treasury Department is located in Washington. Benjamin’s face on the new bill will be released on February 11, 2011. It

will circulate until all the old bills can be circulated out.

Now it is time for the most interesting part! The most interesting part are the colors, designs, and effects! The color

will still be green, but it will have a turquoise tint to it. The design, well the liberty bell will be on the new Benjamin and it will

be disappearing and reappearing! The liberty bell will turn from copper to green when tilting the bill and it is inside an inkwell

and a blue security ribbon. The Benjamin will also have a Quill on it which is what the presidents use to sign papers with. The bills will have a 3-D affect to them too! What will turn 3-D when the bill is tilted? Well the 3-D will be the images and digits

on the bill. The bill also will show Independence Hall on the back and the time on the clock face is written incorrectly as IV

instead of IIII.

Do you find this interesting? I think it will be cool to have money look and be this way. The bill, as I said, will be out

on February 11, 2010. The Benjamin was unveiled on April, 21, 2010. Benjamin’s are also known as C-notes. Would you pre-

fer the old hundred or the new one? Well we will see if this new design is going to be a good or a bad thing. Does the govern-

ment having money to make this new money make you wonder where they got the money to make more money?

The Detroit Lions

Big Changes

By: Zack T.

I think with so many mock drafts being posted and

likely even more to pop up in the coming future we need to get

the best players in the draft this year. I think that it’s necessary

to make sure the football team in Detroit is on the same page

with who the Lion’s pick or traded this draft. Here’s where we

are at right now, this is a look at Detroit’s selection:

Round 1 - #2 (2)

Round 2 - #2 (34)

Round 3 - #2 (66) Round 4 - #2 (TBD)

Round 5 - #2 (TBD)

Round 5 - #15 from Denver (TBD)

Round 6 - #2 (TBD)

The Detroit Lions traded the seventh round pick for

Kevin O’ Connell Simpson. I feel that they should have kept it

that’s what I think he’s not all that good for that. The lions will

get another seventh rounder next year in 2011 for the KO trade.

That’s what’s going on right now, the Lions are getting seven

picks in the 2010 draft. I hope they make the right decisions

this year.

I think that there will be a lot of trades this year, be-

cause the Lions need whoever they can get .I know the trades

this upcoming year will have a lot of effects on all of the foot-

ball teams this season…Some people like myself think that it’s

a good thing that there first game is at home. I think that it’s

cool were not going to know,

until draft day, who were

going to pick up or trade. I

have been thinking about

how this football season go-ing to be for the Lions. I

think that it is going to be a

good football season….So

get ready for 2010,

GO LIONS!

NBA PLAYOFFS

Cleveland vs. Lakers

By: Joshua JT.

It’s the NBA Championship game. The best

two teams, That I think are going to the finals are

Cleveland and the Lakers. Whoever wins the most games out of seven will become the world champions of

the year. I think the Lakers are going to win the champi-

onship because they have a good team and they have

some of the best players on their team. Their star player

is Kobe. He is the star because he is a good team leader

and really knows how to play team ball. When the Lak-

ers win all players ill receive a championship ring. The

ring means that the team had a great season in the NBA. With a championship ring NBA players can get money by being

spokesmen or just asking for higher salary. I SAY GO LAKERS!

Up on the Hill: An example of Ms. Dutton’s dedication to students

When I first came to Children’s Village School in 2008, Ms. Dutton and I discussed new opportunities for the students. Something that had never been tried before: a school newspaper. Ms. Dutton has always been an avid supporter for students at Children’s Village School. She was extremely supportive of this project from the onset and dedicated time and effort to helping make it a success. The school newspaper helped students build their writing skills, learn to work as a team, problem solve, and create new leadership opportunities for themselves.

Up on the Hill is only one of many opportunities Ms. Dutton helped to create for students. I am sure what she’ll remember most about being principal here for 15 years are the great many relationships she established and how she helped not only foster, but create a positive environ-ment for students to live, learn and build real-to-life skills.

Ms. Dutton’s excellence and dedication to education is evident throughout our school. She will truly be missed by her staff, students and many others! Chris Burlingame, Adviser, Up on the Hill

Floyd Mayweather V.S. Shane Mosley

2010’s Best Fight

By: Emmanuel W.

This is what we have been waiting for, when Floyd

“Money” Mayweather finally finds someone who will give him

a good fight. Out of all 40 fighters that Mayweather has fought,

he won them all. The people know that he is one of the world’s

youngest, best fighters. But it seems like one of boxing’s old

school fighters wants to give him a run for his money. On May

1, 2010 Mayweather will face “Sugar” Shane Mosley for the

world title in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mosley has called out Mayweather to a fight. It seems

like Mosley wants to show Mayweather that he can’t hang with

the “big dogs.” Mayweather told Mosley he will take that offer.

Mayweather told Mosley that he is going to beat him and make

him retire.

Mayweather will be facing an opponent who will have

reach and size advantage over him. Also Mosley can match

Mayweather's speed, hit for hit. Mayweather is known for his

great ability to make mid-fight adjustments, but Mosley is

known for closing a fight strong.

Mosley will bring a lot of experience to the fight. It

will be the second time that Mayweather is faced with the chal-

lenge of fighting someone more experienced than him, on the

“big stage.” Mosley was telling the people in the world that he

is the best and he is going to show Mayweather that he is going

to have to take a lost on May 1.

Mosley was telling everyone that Mayweather don’t have the ability to stand up against him. Mosley who is 38

years-old and holds the record of (46-5) and Mayweather who

is 33 years-old holds the record of (40-0). Mosley who been in

the boxing industry since the late 1990s when he was a light-

weight. And Mayweather has only been boxing since 2005.

Mayweather was born in Detroit MI, and moved out

when he was 24 years-old. Mosley was born in Hollywood.

Mosley has been boxing since the age of 7 years-old. May-

weather has been boxing since the age of 5 years-old. I think

that Mosley has more ability and experience to win the fight

then Mayweather Does.

But you will never know until May 1, 2010. Who will

take home the welterweight title and who will be known for the

real best? Who are you going for? Me myself will go for the

best Mosley. May the best man win.

iPhone VS Droid

Which one is better

By: Cody C.

The iPhone and the Droid are very similar

phones both have a touch screen, and can browse the

internet at high speeds. Which one is better though? I

think its opinion based because they both have pros and

cons. Like the iPhone has a sensitive touch pad, and the Droid’s flat keypad makes it awkward to type on. The

iPhone is not all that expensive starting at $100 for the

iPhone 3G. And it’s only just a little more money for the

upgraded version the iPhone 3GS that features more apps

and memory. Some say the Droid has more apps and

memory but it’s a little more expensive starting at about

$150 to $200 with a two year plan. The iPhone doesn’t come with a plan package that’s why some people don’t like the iPhone

that much, and the memory isn’t the best. The Droid is almost like a handheld computer. It holds much more memory than the

iPhone. Most users of the smart phones said the Droid comes out on top. I wonder how long will the Droid last with the Google

phone coming out or all the new products coming out for Apple. The iPhone may just be a start.

It feels like a lie but this is the truth

Movie Review: Avatar

Respect for your surroundings

By: Jason B.

Avatar is the hottest movie of this year. I encourage

every one to see this movie. When you see this movie, think of

how it had an impact on you and make a connection to your

own world and if you can make a connection. Ask yourself are you any different than the

humans on Pandora? Think about it.

The reason that Jake was sent to the people of Pandora was to try and make an

agreement so that they can take their minerals so the military could make money. Once

he discovered their life style and how much they respect the nature and live off of it,

there was no way he could compromise destroying their land. But the humans did not

take no for an answer. So the human military invaded their land with all kinds of weap-

ons and destroyed their home. The battle continues on.

The avatar Jake tried to reason with Pandora’s native people and think of a way

to compromise over their land. With the disagreement not able to be solved, it led the

humans to take war upon Pandora’s native people. That made me think of what the

United States has done to Native Americans, and how we took them to war over their land and kicked them out. We as human beings should respect others life styles that are different than ours.

Not try to force other beings to live our lifestyle.

Favorite Horror Films

First of all I would like to tell everyone “thank you” for filling out my horror film survey and giving me a chance to

express their views and opinions. Especially to the people who, like me, chose A Nightmare on Elm Street. The reason I

picked A Nightmare on Elm Street is because it is original, had good acting, and was filmed excellently even though they were

working with a small budget. I’m looking forward to seeing the new re-make of this classic horror film. The results of my sur-

Eyjafjallajokul blew the top

Volcano that left the sky black

By: Joshua T.

Recently the Icelandic volcano

Eyjafjallajokul violently erupted. During this eruption it released huge clouds

of ash and gas. This eruption has had many impacts on the world, in many

ways.

The volcanic ash has hit the global economy very hard and very

quickly. For example the ash had caused thousands of flight’s to be canceled because the engines could not

handle all that dust and it would have caused the plane to crash. All these flights being canceled have cost the airlines 2.2 bil-

lion dollars. This has caused chaos all over the world.

This volcano had been dormant for 200 years. The volcano pushed house sized ice chunks into fields, flooded farm

lands, covered homes with ash, and turned the sky pitch black during the day. The cloud of ash covered most of Europe.

So overall, the eruption of this volcano had a big impact on the world. Hopefully the next time a volcano erupts it

won’t be as bad as this.

Bipartisanship

The buck stops here

By: Wyatt D.

Republicans or Democrats? Which party is doing more for our country? The truth is, both parties can’t come to any

type of compromise. President Obama is in head office, and is giving an ungrateful America health care. But with a long term

enemy working to undermine every thing he dose, our economy wont get better, it’s a faulty system. I believe that if this country

is to prevail in this recession our government needs to work towards a common goal. If they can’t quit this on going political

banter, it will be a long time before me or you will get any kind of satisfaction as American citizens. Will party leaders ever work together? I hope so, if not this country is heading down a dark road. The question is will Obama be the one to light up the

darkness? Or will he follow his forefathers steps and pass the buck?

Comic Strips

200 years in the making

By: Josh K.

Comic Strips, you see them in newspapers, magazines, and even in social studies textbooks.

A comic strip is a series of hand drawn pictures usually accompanied with words. There are two main

types of comic strips. The first type is political comics, which are used to persuade voters, or make jokes about current events

or politicians. The second type is for entertainment, these are the comics you see in the Sunday funnies, and are made to make

people laugh.

One thing most people don’t know about comic strips is that they’ve been around for over 200 years! The first comic

strip was called “Obadiah Oldbuck,” was printed in Switzerland in 1827, and was made to entertain. The first political comic

was drawn by one of the United State’s founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin. His comic was a picture of a severed snake with

the words “Join or Die” written underneath it. It was made to persuade the colonies to join what would become the United

States.

Since then, comic strips have become a lot more popular, branching into other forms of entertainment such as cartoons

or movies. An example of this is Peanuts, Peanuts is a very popular cartoon that has been made into several made for T.V.

movies. The main characters in Peanuts are Charlie Brown, a boy with a large round head, and his dog Snoopy. You may not

have known this, but this cartoon started off as a comic strip in newspapers in the 1950’s. Another example of a comic strip

being made into a cartoon is Garfield. Garfield debuted in 1978 and since then has been turned into a television series, and several major motion pictures. With comic strips being in almost every single newspaper it’s no wonder that their characters

are so well known. A few other well known comic strip characters are, Calvin and Hobbes, Blondie, Marmaduke, Dilbert, and

Ziggy.

Being an Editor

Editor of this newspaper

By: Giovontae J.

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the stories? I am going to tell you about being an editor. An editor does

a lot for the newspaper. This school year is when I first became editor of this newspaper. It is a hard job with a lot of responsi-

bilities, like helping people with stories, editing the newspaper, over seeing the paper when it’s done, creating the look or de-

sign, and taking stories out that should not be in the paper. Making a newspaper takes a lot of work from different people. But

being an Editor you have to always work hard. You also have to try your best to make an interesting paper for the people who are reading the paper. This is done by selecting the correct picture for a story. And helping create, develop, and edit stories of

this newspaper. When I first got this job I did not work as hard to make this a good newspaper. Now I try to work a little harder

to make this a good newspaper. And this is how it has been as an editor. I say being an Editor could be good for some people.

But for me I say being an Editor is alright. As an editor I try to make the newspaper a good paper, also I try to make people want

to read this paper. And that’s what I have done as the editor.

Look Who’s Talking

Would marijuana help the economy?

By: Doug P.

Diamond H. – “No, I strongly believe that if marijuana was legalized it would make the economy worse

than it already is.”

Monica P. – “Yes, because now that it’s a controlled drug, if you’re caught with it and not prescribed it you get in more

trouble than what you used. It’s costing the state more money to incarcerate people for possession of a controlled substance, then

to just legalize it.”

Crystal D. – “Yes I do, a lot of people use marijuana so a lot of people would buy it.”

Dillon R. – “Yes, because they could tax it. It would also take it off the streets and make it harder for teens to get. Alcohol

is harder to get, it’s easier to get marijuana because there is no age limit, and that’s a shame it’s easier to get illegal substances.”

Michelle H. – “Yes because things would be better, people would have money and jails wouldn’t be packed. Too many

people go to jail for possession. It should be legalized

Kimya T. – “No because people would abuse it, and try to make marijuana as an excuse for everything.”

students and teachers.”

- DiJan L.

there will never be a principal like you.

You are my everything. I had a huge

connection with you. You are my sec-

ond mother. When I was going

through something, you were there for

me! -Richard R.
