WINTER 2017Volume 2 Issue 2
Dr. Ardis Moe receives the NEVHC Visionary Award, presented by U.S. Congressmember Tony Cárdenas and
NEVHC Board of Directors Chairperson, Kurt Cabrera-Miller.
As we wrap-up a year filled with change, advocacy, growth and milestones, I want to share with you highlights of the last few months and a glimpse into 2018 at Northeast Valley Health Corporation (NEVHC).
We celebrated National Health Center Week in August with a visit from U.S. Congressmember Tony Cárdenas (29th District) and California Senator Robert Hertzberg (18th District) who joined us to dedicate the new Van Nuys Adult Health Center (VNAHC). As part of the dedication, we recognized Dr. Ardis Moe, Infectious Disease Specialist and Physician at the VNAHC, for her vision in initiating lifesaving Hepatitis C treatment services for our patients.
Additionally, we received the Health Center Quality Leader Award from the Health Resources and Services Administration for enhancing access to care, and we achieved Patient Centered Medical Home recognition from the Joint Commission. We are proud of the work accomplished by our programs such as The Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC), Champions for Change, Reach Out & Read and Project Dulce which are addressing food insecurity, childhood obesity, illiteracy and child abuse. These problems go hand in hand with poverty and create health disparities that health centers have long recognized and are working to improve.
This year, healthcare advocacy has taken center stage. NEVHC continues to advocate to protect the future of our community health centers and to help ensure that our medically underserved population does not lose healthcare coverage. Since January when “save the ACA” became our rallying cry, we have written letters; made phone calls to Congressional representatives; attended town hall meetings; used social media to get our message out; been interviewed by news reporters; and marched with other health centers in support of the ACA.
In 2018, we will celebrate our 45th anniversary of providing quality health care in underserved communities. We continue to advocate and expand healthcare services with the opening of the Newhall Health Center to patients in the Santa Clarita Valley. We also plan to open the Pacoima Women’s Health Center, and our Transitions to Wellness Homeless Healthcare Program will re-open on the newly remodeled campus of L.A. Family Housing in North Hollywood.
It is extremely rewarding to see the grassroots effort that started so many years ago flourish into one of the largest community health centers in the nation. We are proud to be a positive force in the healthcare system, and we are determined to keep working and raising the bar on ourselves for the betterment of our patients’ health and overall well-being of our communities.
Thank you for your ongoing support and may you and your family have a happy and healthy holiday season!
Sincerely,
Kimberly WyardChief Executive Officer

Dr. Ardis Moe, a passionate advocate for health equity, is the 2017 recipient of NEVHC’s Visionary Award which recognizes outstanding leadership and service. Dr. Moe serves as an Infectious Disease Specialist at NEVHC’s Van Nuys Adult Health Center (VNAHC), providing care for medically underserved and vulnerable groups, including our HIV and Hepatitis C patients. She is an excellent care provider who is deeply committed to improving her patient’s lives and our community’s health.
In 2015, Dr. Moe championed the cause of adding lifesaving Hepatitis C treatment to the cadre of services offered by NEVHC. It wasn’t an easy task. The cost of the drugs for a single patient was approximately $100,000 and for NEVHC’s uninsured patients the affordability would be out of the question. By piecing together patient assistance programs, county programs and Medi-Cal benefits, NEVHC created a plan that afforded services to patients regardless of insurance status. “Thanks to Dr. Moe’s leadership, 24 patients with Hepatitis C have been treated and cured, with many more on the pathway to healing and recovery,” said Kurt Cabrera-Miller, Chairperson of the NEVHC Board of Directors.
With gratitude and humility, Dr. Moe accepted NEVHC’s Visionary Award at the VNAHC Open House on August 16. In her remarks, she graciously acknowledged many of her colleagues at the
health center who have been and continue to be instrumental in providing support to our patients.
Not only is Dr. Moe admired by her colleagues and community partners, but more importantly, her patients love her. They describe how she has touched and transformed their lives through her professionalism and high-quality compassionate care. She takes the time to make personal phone calls to see how her patients are doing, particularly when there is a change in treatment plan or medication.

“Dr. Ardis Moe has been a shining star in my life, guiding me on my path towards physical, as well as mental health. She understands the needs and the obstacles most of her patients face in trying to get and stay in care. I am a very lucky man to have her beside me on my path.”
- Mark Stokes, VNAHC Patient
In addition to her work at NEVHC, Dr. Moe maintains a clinical practice at the UCLA Center for AIDS Research and Education. She has research interests in HIV dementia, complications of HIV and Hepatitis C treatments. Her enthusiastic energy and hard work are making a real difference in the lives of those she treats for infectious and chronic diseases.

Each August, Northeast Valley Health Corporation (NEVHC) joins thousands of health centers nationwide to commemorate National Health Center Week (NHCW) which raises public awareness about the value and impact of health centers. Community health centers serve as the primary medical home to more than 26 million people across the United States. They provide affordable, high-quality health care to America’s most underserved communities.
NHCW’s 2017 theme was “Celebrating America’s Health Centers: The Key to Healthier Communities.” NEVHC celebrated by planning an array of community activities which included the Health Education Department visiting the health centers to provide patient-centered activities and distribute health education materials.
On August 16, NEVHC hosted an Open House and Dedication at the new Van Nuys Adult Health Center (VNAHC), which relocated to a new state-of-the-art facility at 14624 Sherman Way in Van Nuys. The new site features exam rooms for both adult primary care and for specialty care for HIV and Hepatitis C patients.
Over 100 community leaders, healthcare partners and elected officials joined us to commemorate NHCW and to officially dedicate the new Van Nuys Adult Health Center. Keynote Speaker, U.S. Congressmember Tony Cárdenas, shared his experience as a patient
