A message from your Director“Practicing thankfulness is one of the most powerful ways of thinking to bring about a change in our circumstances,” says Mary J. Lore, author of the award-winning book Managing Thought: How Do Your Thoughts Rule Your World?

Thankfulness is one of the quickest and most powerful ways to create a change in our circumstances. Lore says being thankful raises us to a new level of consciousness, giving us the ability to see possibilities, discover what we truly want, receive ideas on what to do next, and realize a vision for the future.

Lore offers advice to practice thinking thoughts of thankfulness. She says that practicing just one of these things brings dramatic improvement in your spirit, relationships, creativity, and in your life.

Alaska Chapter #197The Alaska Chapter has started off with a BANG. We had our Annual Planning in August and set the plan for the next year and we’ve started off early with meeting our goals.

We had six members of our chapter attend the Annual Meeting and Educational Conference in August. Each of those members came back renewed with energy.

Each year our largest fund raiser is helping the Alaska Associated General Contractors with the Alaska AGC Conference and particularly the AGC Family Fun Night. The AGC Conference committee has changed the theme of this year’s event to “Pirates” so many of the items need to be redone. We have painted the back drops and we are working on the other items for fun

about 30 volunteers to man the booths and games for the evening.

Plans are in the works for our Annual Holiday Party in December where we will raise money and gather clothes for Clare House and toiletries for STAR as

Although we still have members that have not renewed we are still hoping that they will have a change of heart and renew and we are working on building our membership with new members. We had a booth at the BP Energy Building dedication and are preparing to have a booth at the AGC Conference.

There is a lot going on in Alaska as we are also preparing for winter. I am so

and what we are thankful for. I am especially thankful for my NAWIC family. Recently, I sent an e-mail to six of our national board members and every one of them replied within 24 hours. That’s NAWIC.

The same level of excellence and support is found in our local chapter and from our board members abroad. The chapter board members have been busy planning meetings and following up on lots of details in order to have successful meetings, and I would like to thank them for their efforts. The Puget Sound chapter remains active in sharing NAWIC’s message to our community; this month, Sue Z. Hart will be representing NAWIC at the 5th annual Pierce County Career Day.

Judy Jewell has been instrumental in contacting many of the members who still need to renew their membership for the 2012-2013 NAWIC year. Judy’s efforts have helped the chapter to grow the past several years despite the recession.

The chapter has fabulous “Girls Rock” t-shirts in two colors (pink or gray) available for purchase that advertise our organization and the construction industry. Thank you Gwyn for all of your t-shirt efforts! Lily Iftner has agreed to join the board again this year, and she is continuing to create the newsletter each month, which is a great conduit to others in the industry.

Brenda Molner has agreed to get us started on the sponsorship drive. Our goal is to raise funds through sponsorships, which will allow our members to attend educational conferences and enable us to offer scholarships to worthy students through the NFSF.

Since the core purpose of NAWIC is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry, NAWIC strives to provide stellar educational programs at each meeting. This is achieved by leveraging quality guest speakers and information- rich members who provide the latest industry information at our monthly meetings. Gayle Hoffman is presenting again this month. She and Lindsay Taft will provide a basic introduction to the M/W/DBE regulations.

What a dedicated team! I am so thankful to all of these women for everything that they do for NAWIC. I have found that leadership in NAWIC is a team effort, because the members are so supportive. Those are great traits to emu-late in our lives and in our jobs.Happy Thanksgiving!

Tacoma Chapter #187Fall is here and the new NAWIC year is off to a running start. Last month the Region 9 Annual Planning Conference was held in Suquamish, WA. The speakers were informative, the venue was breathtaking, and the company was invigorating.

I always seem to leave these Regional events with an excitement and enthusiasm that propels me forward into the year and inspires me to do more to forward NAWIC and my place within it. Is it the speakers providing

company of women from all walks of the construction industry and NAWIC hierarchy?

Maybe it’s the combination of all of these that inspired our small chapter to host this event and persevere in spite of our limited resources, dared me

made me believe that I could run for Director in the upcoming year. Maybe that is the spirit of NAWIC, the core values we rely on.

As we go forth into this year, I hope you all will attend every event you are able to, and allow it to boost you into achievement for yourself, your chapter and NAWIC as a whole.

BELIEVE. PERSEVERE. DARE. ~ NAWIC Core Values

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families!

Spokane Chapter #143Our new year started with our chapter annual planning meeting for 2012-

our committee sign-up. I want to thank all the volunteers. We have room for more volunteers and would love for you to join us on one or several committees. The committees will soon be posted on our website: www.nawicspokane.org for your convenience. If you have any questions about the committees please do not hesitate to call me.

We had six members attend APC at the Clearwater Casino on Bainbridge Island. We all had a wonderful time. The Tacoma Chapter did a wonderful job organizing and planning the event. We sent out our verbal invitation to invite everyone to Spokane for forum in the spring. We handed out Peanut Brittle from the Davenport, postcards and several other brochures on Spokane.

Our November meeting topic will be a presentation from the Smith’s Drivers Safety Training.

Elephant Gift exchange and a charitable contribution related to Cancer.

January we will have a guest speaker on Fitness in the Workplace.February we will have our very own member Erika Grubbs from Winston & Cashatt presenting on Sexual Harassment.

Take care ladies and hopefully we will see you all soon.

Tri-Cites Chapter # 192Chapter 192 started the 2013 NAWIC year with another successful Construction Career Day! We had 450 local high school students attends this year event. Much thanks to Cathy and Erin for their continued help and efforts!! With renewal numbers down, we are looking to new ways of bringing in new members! We are currently working with local high schools promoting the CAD competition. Chapter 192 has wonderful woman willing to make this year the best!!

In light of the recent events on the East Coast and the constant up-to-date media coverage, it feels like the devastation effected all of us.

If just for a moment, I ask that you stop and think about your families, love ones and friends. As like myself, some of you may have family back east who are in the midst of the aftermath and still without power, water and simple comforts like heat. Our thoughts go out to them and the months of recovery ahead to hopefully return to a normal life.

Brewfest was successful thanks to the efforts of Cara Hattrick and Amanda Wilson. It was fantastic to see so many members and their companies supporting NAWIC.

Marilyn Morrison and Jenny Browne for selling the little ribbon tied bags! Our chapter will be donating a portion of the proceeds to NEF and NFSF.

Our Region 9 APC was held in Suquamish, WA. What a beautiful backdrop for our conference; the Clearwater Resort and neighboring Bay area. The weather broke and the sun shined. The Tacoma chapter put on a good show with outstanding events, speakers and really made everyone feel welcome.

Thank you Tacoma chapter and Director Dalene for all of your planning efforts and programs. Not to mention that we had eight chapter members in attendance. Very proud of Portland for showing their continued support for NAWIC.

In closing, I want to thank all my chapter members and their companies for continually fostering the growth of Woman in Construction. Without our members participating, we would not be as successful as we are today, we are

Salem Chapter #198The Salem Chapter has such a diverse and amazing group of women and we are starting on what I hope to be a great adventure this year. We got off to a great start with four members attending APC at the beautiful Suquamish Resort. Thank you to Tacoma for hosting this event at such a peaceful and relaxing location.

NAWIC Education Foundation Expresses Gratitude

NEF was busy during the recent NAWIC Annual Meeting and Educational Conference held in Denver, Colorado. Many attendees took advantage of the adult education course books and

treasure chest of goodies were hot items too. Ladder Club contributions were numerous. Close to $25,000 was raised in the mile high city which will help continue the K-12 and adult education programs of NEF. The successful fundraising efforts were made possible by the many generous members, chapters and companies that donated items and contributed monetarily to the social mixer event. Thank you! The attendees at the AM&EC opened their wallets and helped make the NEF fundraising year quite successful. Thank you! All of your efforts are certainly appreci-ated!

As we start a new year, please remember to keep NEF in your plans. Have a chapter fundraiser or gather loose change at your meetings and budget for the chapter’s ladder club contribution.

With gratitude,Pat Walker, NEF President 2011-2012Frances Jackson, NEF Mixer Chair 2012 Christine Parsons, NEF Fundraising Chair 2011-2012
