Want to be an HP coach? The Badger Region is taking names of coaches who would be

interested in assisting with the Badger Region High Performance programs.

Most coaches begin as evaluators at the HP tryouts and work their way up through the coaching ranks.

To be considered, please send your name, contact information and a brief resume to Brian Sharkey ([email protected]).

The calendar has been turned to 2016 and look out, here come lots of Badger Region program-ming opportunities. One of the most-anticipated each year is the Region’s High Performance Program.

Region High Performance Pro-grams are the regional branches of USA Volleyball’s National High Performance Program. Region HP Programs are operated by the USAV Region that sponsors the program in order to provide junior athletes with high-level training and skill development with some of the top coaches in that region.

Many regions (including Bad-ger Region) send teams to USA Volleyball’s High Performance Championships, providing more athletes across the country the opportunity to compete in the highest level junior tournament available in the United States.

The HP Championships will take place July 26-30 in Fort Lau-derdale, Fla.

Tryouts for both the boys and girls Badger Region HP teams will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2016, at the Wisconsin Center in downtown Milwaukee.

Cost for the tryout will be $35 for pre-registered (prior to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 10) and $70 for walk-up registration.

Online registration will open soon.

Boys HPThis season, we will be fielding

one Badger Region Boys’ HP team in the following division:

* “Boys’ National” (born in 1999 and after)

An estimated 20-25 boys will be chosen from tryouts for the Boys HP training teams. Players will participate in two training sessions, to be held at a site/location/cost to be determined. From the training sessions, one 10-person team (plus alternates) will be selected to attend the Badger Region HP Camp to be held July 16-17, 2016, at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. This 10-player roster will compete at

the USA Volleyball High Perfor-mance Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., July 19-23. Cost for trip will be determined and will include all hotel and trans-portation, tournament entry and related costs as well as a warm-up shirt that the athlete can keep.

Girls HPThis season, we will be fielding

one Badger Region Girls’ HP teams in each of the following divisions:

* Girls’ National Select (born in 2002 and after)

* Girls’ International Youth (born in 2000 and after)

The two 20-player Badger Region HP Training Camp rosters are populated through a tryout

process. Cost for the three-day camp will be determined and will include lodging and all meals, as well as an additional one-day training session in late July. At the conclusion of the camp, each staff of the two 20-person Badger Region HP Training Teams selects 10 players to their Badger Region HP Championship Team. This 10-player roster participates in a team training session on July 17 and competes at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Fort Lauder-dale, Fla., July 19-23. Cost for the seven-day trip will be determined and includes all hotel and trans-portation, tournament entry and related costs as well as a warm-up shirt that the athlete can keep.

Athletes converged on the Wisconsin center for last year’s High Perfor-mance tryout. This year, the tryouts are March 11.

High Performance tryouts set

* Adult/PVL: Orlando, Fla. (May 27-June 1)

* NCVF (College Club): Louisville, Kent. (April 8-10)

* Girls 18U: Milwaukee, Wis. (April 29-May 1)

* Girls: Indianapolis, Ind. (June 24-July 3)

* Boys: Dallas, Texas (June 29-July 6)

* High Performance: Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (July 19-23)

Upcoming USAV Championships:

By Jim MomsenBadger Ref Chair

The Badger Region Office recently received an email from

a fan asking if “…noise-makers such as cow bells or plastic bottles

full of coins/rice were legal at USAV tournaments?”

First, let’s look at a comparison. For high school volleyball

From the 2014-2015 National Federation of State High School Associations’ (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Book:

Rule 1, Section 8 MUSIC/SOUND EFFECTS/ARTIFICIAL NOISEMAKERS states, “The playing of music/sound effects shall only be permitted prior to the start of the set during war-mups, time-outs, between sets, and following the competition. The use of artificial noisemakers shall be prohibited.”

Ruling, not allowed at High School matches.

For NCAA women’s volleyballFrom the 2014 and 2015

NCAA Women’s Volleyball Rules and Interpretations:

Rule 18.2.6 Artificial Noise-makers and Bans states, “Noise caused by artificial noisemakers,

such as whistles or air horns, is not permitted in the playing and spectator areas.”

Rule 18.2.6.1 states, “Cheer-leaders may use megaphones in a non-disruptive manner. Fans are permitted to use nonelectric megaphones for voice amplifica-tion only.”

Ruling, not allowed at NCAA Women’s matches.

For USA Volleyball

While there is no rule in the USAV 2015-2016 USA Volleyball Domestic Competition Regu-

lations (a.k.a. The Rule Book), there is a section on Page 3 that addresses spectator behavior. It states:

SPECTATOR/PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT

I WILL:1. I WILL abide by the official

rules of USA Volleyball.2. I WILL display good sports-

manship at all times.3. I WILL educate myself on

the unique rules of this facility and abide by them.

4. I WILL generate goodwill by being polite and respectful to those around me at this event.

5. I WILL immediately notify the Event Director and/or Pro-gram Administrator in the event that I witness any illegal activity.

6. I WILL acknowledge that the spectator seating around the courts is for the primary use of those watching the match in progress.

7. I WILL acknowledge that spectators may rightfully choose to remain in a seat for an entire match without switching sides of the court when the teams switch.

I WILL NOT1. I WILL NOT harass or

intimidate the officials, including line judges and scorers.

2. I WILL NOT participate in any game or game-like activities

unless I have a current member-ship with USA Volleyball.

3. I WILL NOT bring and/or carry any firearms at any USA Volleyball event.

4. I WILL NOT bring, pur-chase, or consume alcohol at any Youth/Junior volleyball event.

Injury from flying objects in-cidental to the sport of volleyball may occur at this event. Attend at your own risk. Please pay close attention to your surroundings and be alert at all times, especial-ly during active play.

Ruling: So, while noisemakers are allowed at USAV/Badger Re-gion events, I would ask that you take a close look at item #4 under the “I WILL” heading and be respectful of others at the event.

By the way, these guidelines are posted at all Badger Region Volleyball sanctioned events. Each Badger Region club that hosts tournaments has been given a large banner containing the above guidelines. Look for them, under-stand them, and abide by them. If you don’t, you may be having a conversation with Event Manage-ment, and possibly be seen in an unflattering way on YouTube or some other form of social media. Please don’t be “That Parent” and embarrass your child.

Hope your season is going well. Stay warm and play hard!

Donations of volleyball items sought for HaitiActing locally, thinking globally. That’s what one 15-year-old playing for

Capital Volleyball Academy is doing.Abbey Maier, who is in her fourth year at

CVA, contacted the Badger Region before the start of the club season looking to make a dif-ference, and not only on the volleyball court.

Her goal: Share volleyball with the people of Haiti, where she visited not too long ago.

“My family and I decided to share volley-ball with these people because we all love that sport,” Abbey wrote in an email to the Badger Region. “Personally volleyball is one of my favorite things to do, and having the oppor-tunity to bring it to Haiti so that they can be involved in this amazing sport just makes my heart skip a beat.

“Volleyball is a great way to get everyone

involved and makes it a bonding moment. And that is what I want to do: to simply bond with our new friends and be able to have a moment like that. A moment where you are all a team and you work with each other to succeed.”

To help in Abbey’s endeavor, the Badger Region will help collect items such as shoes, nets, balls, poles — whatever a club or indi-

vidual would like to donate — at the 2016 Badger Region Championships. The dates of the Badger Region Championships are March 12-13 and March 20-21.

In addition to collecting volleyball items on site, Abbey has set up an online store where customers can purchase Singing Rooster coffee, cocoa and other products that will benefit the people of Dondon, Haiti, that she is looking to support. To make a purchase, go to www.odidsports.weebly.com. (Shipping costs $6 per order.)

The tournament in Haiti will take place July 14-19, 2016 in Dondon.

The organization overseeing this is called ODID Haiti (www.dondonhaiti.org.). For more information, email [email protected].

Fans: Wear your sportsmanship with pride“I love to watch you play.”They’re the six most important

words you can tell your son or daughter about the sports they play. It sends the whole mes-sage: Enthusiastic, Supportive, Positive.

And to help spread these good words, the Badger Region Vol-leyball Association has come up with a way of rewarding fans who elicit the true meaning of having sportsmanship in the stands.

You may see wristbands around our region with the ESP program’s message (Enthusiastic, Supportive, Positive). We have one for you, if you can live by these three words as you cheer for teams, coaches and officials in our region.

As a matter of fact, we have two of them for you; one for your wrist, and one to give away when you catch a different team’s fan using ESP. In fact give them both away, we will get you another one. Or two.

How does this work?A handful of tournament

directors from the Badger Region have requested a specific number

of wristbands the Region has on hand to give out (it’s a finite number here, people, not enough for every parent or fan).

They will hand out the wrist-bands at their tournaments to the parents and fans they see mod-eling themselves in an “Enthu-siastic, Supportive and Positive” manner.

They will receive two wrist-bands, one for themselves and one for some that parent or fan deems worthy of ESP wristband.

People who show up to the Badger Region Championships wearing the ESP wristband will receive a special gift for being a positive role model for the young athletes in the gym.

Just don’t make us have to take the wristband away from you. That would be embarrassing.

These wristbands are for fans, not players. Let’s take our cheering and our region up a few notches:

* Get a little crazy.* Go the extra mile.* Support your team with

positive cheering.* Recognize the good in your

teams and others.* Get way off the chain and

clap when the other team makes a great play.

* We need good opponents to get better. Be that good opponent.

Put away the in-your-face cheers, actions and yelling, and

hold others to the same standard. For more information about

the program, contact Badger Region Volleyball Associa-tion Board Member BJ LeRoy (Northeast Rep/Adult Rep) at [email protected].

Club directors can contact Brian Sharkey ([email protected]) to request a few of the remaining wristbands for the 2015-16 season.

3CThe ESP program is the sister

program of another initiative started recently by the Bad-ger Region known as Coaches Coaching Coaches.

This program uses Badger Region Mentor Coaches to work with and assist club coaches be-come better with at their jobs.

This program allows expe-rienced coached the chance to share their knowledge, see new coaches in action and guide them with proven methods. The pro-gram is free for Badger Region clubs to participate in, too.

Relax your arms for better passingWorking with two of his passers, University of North Carolina coach Joe Sa-

gula talks about why it’s so important in volleyball to keep the arms wide when readying for a dig or a pass. As he points out, it takes patience. But the payoff is that you’re less likely to swing your arms and shank the ball.

ART OF COACHING TIP OF THE WEEK

Adult teams prepare for seasonThe adult volleyball

season begins in January and will feature a handful of tournaments through-out the Badger Region for adult players looking to compete.

One of the first things adult teams in the region need to do is fill out the “Adult Team Info Form” available on the Badger Region website.

This season, we have also created an area for play-ers looking for teams and teams looking for players, similar to what is available for the junior membership.

During the 2016 season, the Badger Region will sanction one tournament a month leading up to the Badger Region Champi-onships for adults in May. Teams that want to receive the stipend for nationals

must participate in three of these tournaments and the Badger Region Champion-ships.

PVL tryoutsThe Badger Region’s

Men’s PVL team is having a “rolling tryout.” This means that anyone interested in playing for the team can tryout by participating in a minimum of one adult tournament the team plays in leading up to the PVL Championships in May. Athletes will play at a tournament and then be considered for the team by Program Director Brian Sharkey and other athletes and coaches in the Bad-ger Region’s Men’s PVL program.

For questions, email Brian Sharkey at [email protected].
