Volume 19, Number 1 Spring 2008 Kistler family. Thirty years ago, those words applied to the children and grandchildren of Betty and Wayne. Those words still apply to the Kistlers. It’s the meaning of the word family that has changed. Kistler family has grown to include literally thousands of children, their parents, siblings, grandparents and caregivers that have benefited from the birth of the Kistler Center in 1978. After struggling to find appropriate rehabilitative care for Greg when he suffered a brain injury after he was hit by a car at 6, Betty and Wayne Kistler knew what lay ahead a decade later when their granddaughter, Michelle, was born with spina bifida. In the ‘60’s, Greg and his parents had to travel out of state to receive treatment. This time, the Kistlers decided, the treatment would come to Michelle. Betty and Wayne, along with Michelle’s mother, Jennifer, took on the task – and the system that said it couldn’t be done - of bringing to Fort Smith the premier pediatric rehabilitative center in the region. It opened in a single room at Sparks Hospital with one therapist using four pieces of equipment to treat their six patients that first year. Fast forward 30 years and you have nearly 600 children benefiting from a staff of 26 while receiving treatment in a 12,000-square-foot facility holding rehabilitative equipment valued over $300,000. The Center also serves as a clinical site for physical, occupational and speech- language therapy for more than 12 colleges and universities. The photos presented in this newsletter are just a glimpse into our family photo album. In loving memory of Michelle Kistler, the Board of Directors of TheGregory Kistler Treatment Center For Children, Inc., hasestablished an Endowment Fund. This endowment, through itsearnings, will be used to help fund needed therapy to more of ourspecial children so the Board of Directors can continue thephilosophy of never turning a child away for financial reasons.Additionally, as the Kistler Center’s Board directs, some earningsmay be directed to operational activities to sustain and grow theKistler Center’s ability to provide the most up-to-dateoccupational therapy, physical therapy, and/or speech-languagetherapy possible for children. Take that old cell phone out ofretirement and put it to work!Participate in the used cellphone drive.

Instead of throwing out that old printer cartridge, bring it intothe Kistler Center. Collect cartridges from your friends, familyor at work and help raise money for the Center.

The Kistler Center will receive a monetary donation for eachworking cell phone and printer cartridge donated. The betterthe phone, the more money we will receive. Older model phonesmay not generate any funds, but they will be recycled properly.We will receive $3 for each used printer cartridge donated (Dell,HP, Lexmark or Cannon). We are now able to accept lasercartridges as well.

To donate, please bring your used cell phone to the Kistler Center,Moore Dental Care, Rhodes Chevrolet, or Sutherlands.Don’t forget to erase the addressbook and any personal information.Please put printer cartridges in a bagto keep things neat and clean. Alldonations are tax-deductible. Consultyour tax advisor to determine thevalue. Thank you!
