Letter from the President

When I was growing up in Cleveland I used to take the bus to my Saturday flute lessons. Usually I sat right by the door, which meant everyone passing at the exit could see my music bag and flute case. One day something happened which has given me a lasting memory. An elderly gentlemen came to the exit, widened his eyes, smiled broadly, and spoke to me.

“Ah, a flutist!” He may even have repeated that. “You must remember this: practice your Andersen études! Always practice your Andersen études!” By

now he must have descended to the bottom stair. “Don’t forget your Andersen études!” He disappeared… and I soon learned what Andersen études were!

I share this story with you, my fellow Rochester Flute Association flutists, because the serendipity of a long-ago 15-second event holds so much: the desire for a man (unknown to me forever) to share something, to teach even. Could such a short

encounter have been seen as camaraderie among flutists, a sage master advising his student, or perhaps was it simply that someone found an opportune moment to share a valuable lesson of his own?

Whatever the motivation, it remains a sweet little tidbit of a story. I mention it because it is such a good example of the best of sharing. As I begin my term as president of the RFA, I will watch for us all to continue sharing -- whatever our ages, levels of flute playing, or musical favorites. There are, of course, more things to remember to do in flute study than Andersen études. There are multitudes of études, practice exercises, and, of course, music that we practice. Let us all allow our interactions to keep us open to life-long learning and enjoyment of music.

The RFA is a strong organization, built up over the years by and for its members, our families and friends. Joanna Bassett, leaving her second stint as RFA president, has done a marvelous and competent job of keeping our mission forefront. We all wish her well as she takes a significant position with the National Flute Association. I look forward to being at the helm and continuing the good work of the RFA. Our “mission” states it, and we should carry it proudly: promote the enjoyment and appreciation of the flute, assist each other in achieving musical excellence, and facilitate the exchange of ideas among us all.

Happy fluting,

Sally Ann Hart

I recently spoke with internationally renowned flutist Bonita Boyd, Professor of Flute at Rochesterʼs own Eastman School of Music and guest artist for Flute Fair 2013. I asked her for a sneak peek at the program for her November 1 recital and

her eyes twinkled as she answered, “I’m selecting my very favorite pieces; those that have special meaning to me and have been significant to my career.” One of those is certainly Poulencʼs lyrical Sonata for Flute and Piano, featured on Ms. Boydʼs recording Flute Music of Les Six (named Record of the Year in 1983 by Stereo Review). “This is one of the jewels of our repertoire- it has such artistic depth. Thatʼs why I like to play the pieces I play. And the wonderful pianist Barry Snyder will be joining me.” Professor Boydʼs critically acclaimed New York debut in Alice Tully Hall was a career highlight, and her performance of the dazzling Paganini Caprices was a technical tour de force. “I was riding in this small plane with (conductor) David Zinman and he asked me what I was playing for the debut. ʻWhy don’t you do something outrageous.ʼ he suggested, ‘Something no one else does- like play all the Paganini violin caprices on the flute?ʼ ʻReally?ʼ I thought. ʻWell... why not!ʻ I spent the whole summer memorizing those things and, you know, I never listened to the violin recordings- not once. I wanted to think of them as being for the flute.” She will be performing a group of the caprices just for us on November 1. Bartokʼs dynamic Hungarian Peasant Suite, another of her favorites, is on the program. “And,” she smiled, “Iʼm especially excited to play here in my home base. That gives me the opportunity for some surprises, possibly some chamber music with friends- we’ll see.” And for us, the opportunity to hear Rochesterʼs own world-class flute virtuoso performing her favorite pieces in the intimate surroundings of Hatch Hall is a treat not to be missed. -Anne Harrow

Walfrid Kujala in Masterclass

In this Flute Fair featuring “homegrown” artists and teachers, there is good reason to include Walfrid Kujala, retired principal piccoloist of the Chicago Symphony and professor emeritus at Northwestern University. He received his bachelor and master of music degrees from Eastman with Joseph Mariano, and was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic from 1948 to 1954. During his tenure in the CSO, Mr. Kujala also taught at Eastman from 1973-1975. All of these ventures lead us to claim him as Rochester-grown!

A word very often used to describe Walfrid Kujala is “gentleman”. After studying with him for four years and keeping in touch with him at National Flute Association conventions, that is still the first word that comes to mind. He is a gentle teacher, though very precise and interested in every detail of the music. When I was at Northwestern, we were fortunate to be using his original hand-written exercises which later became his popular The Flutist’s Vade Mecum. These pages of scales and arpeggios are beautiful to look at, as well as proven to be effective for establishing good technique. One of my fondest memories from those years is having sectionals in Mr. Kujala’s studio: we would sit in a row in as an orchestral section while he conducted; we wore large headphones as he played recordings of the repertoire and we played along with the Chicago Symphony.

We welcome Mr. Kujala back to Rochester to give a Flute Fair masterclass where participants will be able to learn from his many years of experience with the orchestral piccolo highlights or piccolo solo repertoire.

After an overwhelming response to the Yoga for Flutists workshop with Margaret Rowley at last year’s flute fair, she will be offering two classes this year. One from 9:00-9:50 am, and another from 10:00-10:40 am. As a flutist and a yoga teacher, Margaret’s class is specifically aimed at flute players. Her focus will be on pranayama (breathing) exercises to open the airways and facilitate

breathing with ease. She will talk about wrist flexibility and spinal alignment, with a special focus on how good posture can encourage deeper and better breathing. If possible, bring your mat and wear comfortable clothing!

The RFA is pleased to present Rebecca Gilbert in masterclass on Saturday, November 2. Most of us are already familiar with Ms. Gilbert’s virtuosic playing, having heard her perform as principal flutist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Ms. Gilbert will be working with some of the area’s brightest middle-schoolers, providing them with a unique opportunity to perform and learn from one of the premier flutists in

the area. I had the pleasure of studying with Ms. Gilbert as a portion of my collegiate studies. Her kind, gentle persona, combined with an unwavering dedication to excellence, made a positive and immediate impact on my playing. Performers and listeners alike will benefit from Ms. Gilbert’s vast wealth of pedagogical and performance experience. She is yet another example of the breadth and depth of talent and resources we enjoy here in the immediate Rochester area!

During the week of July 8, fifteen flute students participated in the RFA/Hochstein Flute Camp 2013. Each day the students played in small lesson groups and rehearsed with flute choirs named after Taffanel and Gaubert. After an audition early in the week, four students (Katie Dessert, Francesca Niven, Katie Erickson, and Lauren Morehouse) had the opportunity to play in a masterclass with RPO principal flutist, Rebecca Gilbert. Campers also enjoyed a faculty recital, a tour of the John Thomas Library, lunch time with snacks and the ever popular Flute Bingo game, and a fascinating presentation by Jan Angus on flutes from around the world.

The week concluded with a concert on Friday evening, including a rousing performance of Ian Clarke’s flute choir piece Zig Zag Zoo. Two scholarships were awarded to students who had auditioned in June – the Alleen Fraser Scholarship to Katie Erickson and the Steven Finley/FluteFX Scholarship to Lauren

Morehouse.
