ALTAR FLOWERS, CANDLES & SUPPLIES

It is time to sign up for 2016 Altar flowers, candles and supplies. Please find the blank schedules on the bulletin board across from the elevator. These are on a first come, first serve basis, so please select your dates soon!

OUR NEWCOMER MINISTRY

Our Newcomer’s Ministry is a new offering designed to welcome and involve people who are new to St. Luke’s, whether it is their first Sunday or a return visit. At St. Luke’s we want every person to know he or she can find a home here - a community that welcomes you into the heart of the Body of Christ. A Welcome Class is held every second Sunday at 9:30 a.m., meeting in the Gathering Room (upstairs). We’ll have coffee and conversation, get to know one another, answer inquiries, and take a short tour of our building. The inaugural Welcome Class will be March 13th. We will gather in the Narthex at 9:15 a.m. and a committee member will lead all upstairs. If you are “new” to St. Luke’s, we hope you will join us. Parishioners who would like to be a part of this ministry can contact Scott Sprouse at 731-420-3521 or [email protected], Berta Garrity at 731-437-0029 or [email protected], or Cody Blue Miller at 731-453-5113 or [email protected].

MARCH 20 - KEEPING HOLY WEEK THE WHOLE WEEK BY TREKKING THE TRIDUUM: MAUNDY THURSDAY, GOOD FRIDAY AND EASTER VIGIL

Holy Week commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), his Last Supper with his closest disciples (Maundy Thursday), his passion and crucifixion (Good Friday), and his resurrection (the Easter Vigil). The story of Jesus' suffering and death are at the heart of our Christian faith. Come learn how the observance of and participation in these three days helps us to enter fully into the Paschal mystery and hopefully, ultimately to experience our own resurrection along with that of in Jesus. Join us at 9:30 am in the Commons.

We welcome Mark Only as the newly elected Treasurer of the Vestry of St. Luke’s. Congratulations!! The Only family - Mark, Kristina, Ava (7) and Anna(4) are a blessing to us all!

THE JERRY HOLT MEMORIAL RECYCLE PROGRAM by Harry Ecoff

“Paper Recycle Sunday” was originated by The Reverend Deacon Tommy Rhoads and assigned to parishioner Mr. Gerald (Jerry) Holt to implement. Jerry was a retiree, a faithful attendee of Sunday services, and generously volunteered his service to the church and community. Jerry also donated his 1980 vintage, nine passenger, Dodge van for the collection and storage of the recycled paper.

Jerry Holt passed away July 15, 2014 after a long term illness and I have continued the program with Dr. Lorne Semrau. A motion was passed by the Vestry in August of 2014 to honor Jerry and renamed the paper drive to “Jerry Holt Memorial Recycle Program”.

In the beginning the program rendered an average of 950 to 1,000 pounds of paper monthly. The past year we have increased the average to 2,250 pounds of papers and 30 pounds of aluminum cans recycled each month. We added aluminum cans in 2015 because of the need and the fact we receive twenty times more money per pound compared to paper. The main purpose of the recycle program is service to the community, to conserve our resources, and a few dollars are always welcome. The actual amount of money varies proportional to the commodities market, but presently yields about one hundred dollars a month to the general fund.

Thanks to everyone participating in the program and remember … the paper and cans are collected the LAST Sunday each month in the alley on the north side of the church.

SERVANTHOOD by The Rev. Deacon Tommy Rhoads

This month’s Mission Partner focus is on the Regional Interfaith Association. When we began this monthly focus last August, RIFA was the first partner we highlighted. One of the ways we remember our mission partners is by lifting them up in prayer during the Prayers of the People each Sunday. This month please offer your prayers for the Regional Inter-Faith Association.

RIFA was first organized in 1976. In 1985 St. Luke’s Rector, Fr. Peter Magill, saw the need to feed the underserved population in our community, and with the help of the Salvation Army, started the Soup Kitchen, which continues to this day under the auspices of RIFA. St. Luke’s provides kitchen volunteers two weeks during the year. But RIFA provides many other services, and there are many ways you can become involved in their mission of ministry: by sorting food, stocking shelves, assembling snack backpacks or food sacks, sorting clothing, tutoring/mentoring, thrift store clerk, clerical/receptionist duties.

For more information on RIFA, go to rifajackson.org.
