President’s Report

July has been a cold month and it has been pleasing to see that the club has been able to maintain its normal functions. The run to Glencoe, on a slightly warmer day. was most enjoyable. Thankyou to the organisers. The coffee run to Hollicks was reasonably well attended and the Market day was fantastic – the best one for quite a while. It was great to see so many members enjoying the pizza night. Daphne did a great job of putting it all together. The Exec. Committee is awaiting tenders for the Caterpillar 8R tractor which is now out at Hank Bunniks, where I think it is comfortable. Next month is our AGM. Please let the secretary or president know if you are willing to stand for a position. (if you hold a current positiont and definitely don’t want to continue it might pay to let us know that too), Regards for now, Graham Henschke.

Glencoe Shearing Shed – Sunday Run – 27th June

Quite a few turned up at the Glencoe shearing shed. Some came via Penola coffee shop and

others followed the Shouksmiths. The weather was great for lazing while eating lunch.

Inside the shed the old fittings of the wool shed are still there. No overhead shearing plant has

ever been installed. Only blade shearing has ever been used. In 1844 two brothers, Robert and

Edward Leake came to the area from Tasmania, bringing with them Saxon Marino sheep. There

holdings stretched from Mt Muirhead to the region near Penola Rd. They built their first home

near Lake Leake. Robert died in 1860 and Edward continued managing the property. When the

flock reached 50,000 sheep he decided to build the woolshed. This was opened in 1863.

The building was hand adzed, with cathedral like arched blackwood beams. The supporting

beams are also sawn blackwood. To assist in their assembly, the roof timbers were laid on the

ground and marked with Roman numerals. The doors of the catching pens were originally

pivoted on an English penny and were closed with a weighted cord.

In its heyday there were 38 shearers as well as roust-a-bouts, wool-classers and shed hands.

Shorn fleeces were gathered and spread on the wool table, skirted and classed. The wool was

then baled and taken, by bullock wagon to Portland. Then shipped to England for auction. The

drying shed at the rear was half the length of the woolshed and allowed the breezes to blow

through and dry the wet sheep. This shed was later bought by Coola Station.

The most sheep shorn in one year was 53,000. They shore 2,000 per day and employed an

extra 100 men.

Edward Leake died in 1867 and the property was bought by George Riddoch who sold it in

1901. Later it was bought by Mr Kennedy (Scotty) who later donated it to the National Trust. >>>

On the way home some members called into the Nangwarry Forestry Museum. Some had been there before but wanted to see it again.

Thank you to the MacDonalds for arranging this run. We look forward to the next one.

PIZZA NIGHT What a fabulous night this was. Over 30 members had a great time socializing, telling jokes and eating. Thanks to Daphne who did most of the organising and purchasing for the night. Daphne has been running mini raffles on meeting nights and to show her appreciation for member support decided it was time for a social night. Thanks again Daphne.

COFFEE RUN

Our Coffee Run on July 13th was to Hollicks in Coonawarra. About 15 members enjoyed the drive. The little coffee shop was not really equipped for our larger group and it was too cold to sit ouside so we took our coffees and eats into the main building. The food, by the way, was excellent and varied. The coffee was Mahalia and great. They told us to make a booking next time. I had tried to make them aware of a larger group but the girl said they didn’t take bookings. It must depend who you talk to. Some members did some wine tasting and bought some bottles. Next time we’ll book.

John de Frederick 1932 – 2021 as told by Mike Hornabrook

John became involved in the NHVC early on and with one exception served as president

continuously from 1980 to 1994. His wife Lorraine filled the arduous post of secretary from 1986 to

1994. John has been made a life member of the club.

In his childhood John and his sister Rosilynd attended Mount Light Primary School, riding their

bicycles from their home on a farm near the Naracoorte Caves. Previously their father, Charles,

had been farming close to Kaniva, until serving in the army during World War two. Both children

later went on to Naracoorte High School.

John remembered, as do I, being in Naracoorte in 1943 during school holidays, when the

monstrous, very noisy, RAAF Lancaster bomber “Q for Queenie” twice flew very low along Smith

Street. This was to stimulate contributions to War Loan Bonds.

When war ended in 1948, and after his military service, Charles de Frederick applied for and was

granted a Soldier Settlement block in the Mundarra Estate, South East of Apsley. Mundarra

homestead and other blocks were accessed from the Edenhope/Langkoop Road. The furthest was

de Frederick’s. It became known as De Frederick’s Road. When the house was completed and

painted the family move in in 1949.

Early in 1955 I began managing our family property which was immediately west of de Frederick’s

Road. A few weeks later a disastrous fire ran from Langkoop through Poolaijelo to Dergholm.

From then on I got to know the de Frederick family and remember helping John’s mother in her

“old Chevvy” when it bogged in the sand on the road to Apsley. My contact with John and others

continued through the Langkoop Fire Brigade.

As well as old British-built cars, bought at clearing sales and brought home on his trailer, John

acquired a Field Marshall tractor to supplement the useful Nuffield tractor. He had these running

on dam-sinking and other jobs. As the vehicle collection grew, John built a substantial shed to

protect them.

While still a bachelor, John was hospitalised for from something. The word got around that he was

looking for a good woman with the usual domestic skills and mechanical ability. Lorraine stepped

up and she continues to get pleasure from their daughter and grandchildren.

Here is the Langkoop tanker being serviced at Sherwood farm,

Moorooduc when homeward bound from fire-fighting. John de

Frederick is holding the can. John loved Austins and all things

British.

Editor’s note: During his lifetime John served in the Langkoop

Fire Brigade and fought fires in the Victorian Alps/Gippsland

area. He was also a member of the Apsley RSL. Mike

Hornabrook has more details of their fire-fighting experiences

This is the Caterpillar 8R tractor that the club has no room to store anymore. At present Hank Bunnik, who has done a lot of work on the tractor is happy to have it at his property. According to constitution it has to be offered for sale. Tenders close on the 31st July. (Box 807, Naracoorte).
