It is our honor to bestow The Spirit of St. Vincent de Paul Award to Sister Virginia O'Donnell of the Congregation of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament on Auction night. Sister Virginia O’Donnell was born in Ireland in 1930. She left Ireland to join the Sisters of the Incarnate Word in 1949 and began her teaching career while in first vows. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of St. Thomas, became a certified teacher, and pur-sued a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Hou-ston. Sister Virginia served as an elementary school principal for twenty-five years at three different Houston area Catholic ele-mentary schools. She pursued additional graduate studies at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkley, California, and was certi-fied in Theological Studies.
At the request of Monsignor Jim Jamail, Sister Virginia was sent on August 18, 1987 to assist in the ministry of faith and spiritual growth at St. Vincent de Paul Church. She initiated several sub-ministries, including ministries to the active and homebound seniors, the hospitalized, the terminally ill, and grieving fami-lies. She also advocated for the installation of automatic doors and wheelchair ramps throughout the parish for the elderly and disabled. Most recently, she has been an active champion of the Guayaquil Mission in Ecuador, living Christ’s call to teach and care for the world’s poorest of the poor.

Sister Virginia resigned as the Pastoral Administrator of St. Vin-cent de Paul Catholic Church in 2012 when her community elect-ed her as Local Superior of the Motherhouse Congregation. She nevertheless remains an active, engaged, prayerful, and comfort-ing presence to all who are blessed to cross her path. We at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School gratefully honor her for all she has done over the years to make our parish and community a bet-ter place through her lifelong, humble service in the spirit of the Gospel Beatitudes.

Dear Parents,
I want to wish all of you many blessings in the
New Year. We are beginning the second se-
mester of this school year and I am sure it will
fly by just as quickly as the first. I would
impress on your children that they should
make the most of every day here at school.
They should come prepared to make the most
of the numerous learning opportunities pro-
vided by our dedicated teachers. Great pro-
gress is accomplished in baby steps as they
put forth their best efforts on a daily basis.
Academic success is a marathon not a sprint.
I am constantly amazed as I visit classrooms
at the high level of teaching in all subject
areas.
Spiritual development instills hope and
strengthens us to face the inevitable challeng-
es the world brings us. You can give your
children the greatest gift ever by strengthening
their spiritual foundation which will support
them throughout their lives. This is what we
call developing the whole child. Nothing is
more gratifying than attending the children’s
Mass or liturgy service. Parents are welcome
to join us as we celebrate together.
Construction of a new maintenance facility on
Bradford Street should begin soon. Once
maintenance has moved into the new building,
renovation on the current facility will begin.
We plan to move art and band into the reno-
vated space. This will give us an entire build-
ing dedicated to the further development of
our already strong fine arts program. This is
an area of great strength for St. Vincent de
Paul Catholic School. We are unique in being
able to provide such a high level program that
helps to showcase the many talents of our
students.
The parish is celebrating its 75th anniversary
year. Numerous activities are planned to com-
memorate the founding of the parish and
strengthen the spirit of a very strong faith-
filled community. The Weekly News along
with the parish website will keep you up to
date on the monthly events the anniversary
committee has planned. The parish supports
the school financially and spiritually. I hope
you and your family will join in the festivities
as we move through this historic year of the
parish.
One of my favorite quotations from the Bible
comes from Jeremiah. It is my wish for you
in the New Year.
I also know the plans for you: plans to pros-
per you and not to harm you, plans to give you
hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
Happy New Year!
Carolyn Sears M.Ed.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL...
The SVdP community is full of tremendously
talented people. All the students benefit when
those talents are shared with the PTO, in support
of the mission of SVdP Catholic School. PTO is
also a great way to meet other parents.
Please consider joining the PTO Board.
Nominations for the 2015-16 PTO Board will begin
in late January/early February when a link to an
online survey will be provided. Please take time to
nominate talented people. Self-nominations are
also encouraged.
(The survey is anonymous, so don't be shy!)
If you have questions about the nominations pro-
cess, please contact Heather Montoya, PTO Past
President. For questions regarding PTO Board
positions, please contact Teresa Bogatto, PTO Pres-
ident. Further information on the nominations
process, and on PTO Board positions, can be
found under the PTO tab of
www.saintvincentschool.org.

Grandparents’ Day and Christmas Program: PTO Per-
forming Arts Directors Rachel Bush and Olguita Santiago
Rodriguez provided volunteer coordination and production
assistance for these fantastic School-sponsored events.
Breakfast with Santa: Patricia Sayegh and Jennifer Vis-
intine organized “Breakfast with Santa and the Elf on the
Shelf” to begin the Christmas season with a morning full of
crafts, breakfast, and great shopping. Thank you to Santa
for making the trip from the North Pole for some photos, to
the Knights of Columbus for serving a delicious breakfast,
and to the SVdP Choir for lending their beautiful voices.
Christmas Gift Collection: Thank you, Room Parent Co-
ordinator Esmer Vale, for spearheading the Christmas Gift
Collection for our faculty. In addition to the Christmas bo-
nuses that the PTO provided to all full-time and part-time
school personnel, a monetary Christmas gift was also given
to our wonderful faculty, thanks to the generous contribu-
tions from SVdP families.
Please mark your calendars for Cabrini Festival (March 25 –
27), where we will focus on The Holy Land. Style Show
(May 3) will honor the eighth grade class and it is open to
the entire school community to attend.
There are many events and services sponsored by the PTO
throughout the year. I am honored to work with each of the
members of the PTO Board (listed on page 4). I am hum-
bled by their dedication, and grateful for their friendship.
Thank you to all of the volunteers, committee members, and
PTO Directors.
Parental involvement is the critical component to the success
of these events and services organized through the PTO.
Thank you all for everything you do! If you have questions
or want to get involved, please contact me at 713-562-5774
With gratitude,

Teresa Bogatto, PTO President
Dear Parents,
I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming “Swing
into Auction 2015” Gala and Auction on January 31. Auc-
tion is the biggest social event of the school year and the
PTO’s most important fundraiser. Many, many thanks go to
our Auction Directors, Cathy Hollerbach and Ana Patrick,
and to their dedicated Auction Committee members. Due to
their collective efforts, “Swing into Auction 2015” will grant
our faculty and parent community the opportunity to come
together for a night of celebration for our beloved school and
to support two lasting projects: the Legacy Wall and our
Adopt-A-Student Program. Thank you, friends, for the in-
credible work you have done.
The volunteerism present in the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic
School community is impressive. We have a beautiful, high-
ly functional mix of new and experienced volunteers. It
seems clear that the habitual volunteers have found joy in
giving, and that volunteering fulfills them emotionally and
spiritually. On top of that fulfillment, volunteering offers a
tremendous opportunity to meet new friends – those whose
children are in other grades and who we may not otherwise
meet.
With that in mind, please consider nominating yourself or a
friend for a 2015-16 PTO Board position. The nominations
process will begin shortly with an online survey. The survey
is anonymous, so please do not be shy about nominating
yourself! Thank you, PTO Past President, Heather Montoya,
and the Nominating Committee, for ensuring that this is a
fair, smooth process.
Since the last issue of Tiger’s Mouth was published, we have
had many events and services organized by the PTO, all made
possible with the help of many, many volunteers. We are
grateful to the following Directors and their committee mem-
bers for bringing these events to life:
Tiger Pride Day: Enrichment Directors Lisa Gasper and
Maria Jose Redondo Nieto have been instrumental in high-
lighting the many talents of SVdP students, and for honoring
the teachers, too.
Book Fair: Mildred Bautista and Gentine Meagher co-
directed this beloved event, supporting SVdP’s library. “Get
Caught Reading” earned over $5,500 for the library, plus over
675 new books were donated to the library, classrooms, and
counselors for SVdP students’ use.

School Board News
Congratulations on completing the 2nd quarter of the 2014-
2015 school year. We hope everyone had a wonderful
Christmas break and is energized to start the new year. We
hope you will join us in supporting the school and the PTO
at the Gala & Auction on January 31.
The School Board plays an integral part in planning the
direction of our school’s future. We held a special week-
end session in January to hear from Monsignor Bill regard-
ing his vision for the school and to review next school
year’s budget. In November, the Communications Com-
mittee hosted a Focus Group session with several moms in
order to get feedback on the school’s direction. We plan to
hold another Focus Group in the spring. The Student Af-
fairs Committee has been working with Beta Club on ser-
vice initiatives for the students.
We have finalized the school’s Strategic Plan and you can
view the document on Edline under the Contents section in
the School Board folder. The School Board is committed
to being as transparent as possible and is publishing its
monthly meeting reports and presentations on Edline as
well. The School Board meets monthly on the 2nd Tues-
day at 7:30am through May. The meetings are open to
those who request attendance in advance (except occasional
confidential discussions). If you would like to address the
School Board with an issue, please contact Joe Louis at
[email protected]. The School Board relies on the ex-
pertise and support of parent volunteers. If you have a spe-
cial qualification and an interest in assisting, please contact
the respective chairperson.

Grandparents & special friends joined the SVdP school
community for a morning of celebration on the last day of
school before Thanksgiving Holiday. The SVdP Choir
began the program with beautiful renditions of “God
Bless America”, “Child of Peace” & “Angels Among
Us”. The primary and intermediate students followed
with “Turkey Trot”, “Glory Bound”, “This Little Light of
Mine” and “Lean on Me”. The Bell Choir rang to the
tune of “Breathe” and the Drum Line’s rousing finale
concluded the program.

At St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School, it is our tradition to serve
others and take care of one another. Our Adopt-A-Student
program is a shining example of how we care for each other in
our school community.
What is the Adopt-A-Student program? It is essentially our rainy
day fund. The Adopt-A-Student program provides
financial assistance for current school families who encounter a
financial hardship – the loss of a job, the loss of a family member
or even an illness - that would ordinarily force students to
withdraw from school.
A financial hardship is difficult for all family members, but St.
Vincent de Paul Catholic School is committed to minimizing the
disruption in a child’s life by keeping them enrolled at
SVdP. The assistance process is confidential and the school is
typically able to help four to six grateful families each year. On
average, $25,000 is given in tuition assistance each year.
The demand for Adopt-A-Student assistance increases each year,
and now is the time to join together to take care of our communi-
ty. Help St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School continue our tradi-
tion of caring for others. Paddles Up for Adopt-A-Student!

National Catholic Schools Week
is the annual celebration of
Catholic education in the United
States. This year CSW begins
on January 25 and runs
through January 31. Schools
focus on the value a Catholic
education provides to young
people and its contributions to
our church, our communities
and our nation. Catholic
Schools Week activities at St.
Vincent de Paul Catholic School
will include student and faculty participation during Sunday Masses
on January 25, the 8th grade CCSC shoe drive kick-off, and will culmi-
nate with our All School Mass and Academic Pep Rally on Friday, Janu-
ary 30. Throughout the week, additional cross curricular activities will
encourage students to focus and reflect on the benefits of attending a
Catholic school.

Alley Theatre artists presented Oskar and the Big Bully
Battle during Power of One Week. Oskar’s new, very white shoes belonged in a museum of GRRRReatness! Or, at least they did until Frank stepped on them. If apolo-gies had happened right then, this playground mishap would not have escalated into a wild adventure illustrating the roles of victim, bully, bystander, and upstander. This comic assembly helped students understand the multiple perspectives involved in an escalating incident of bullying and how to respond when they are involved in their own playground mishaps.

Many thanks to all of you who have contributed to this
year’s Wine Pull! Those of you who are new to St. Vin-
cent de Paul Catholic School and the Auction & Gala may
be asking yourself, “What is the wine pull?”
Each year, one of the most anticipated events at the Auc-
tion & Gala is the Wine Pull where for $100 you have the
opportunity to “pull” 3 corks which each correspond to a
bottle of wine. These wines are donated by our generous
parents and are valued at a minimum of $25 each.
Many times, bottles that are difficult to find in retail out-
lets and bottles that have received stellar ratings have been
donated and you could go home with well over $100
worth of wine!
Questions? Please contact any member of the Wine Pull Committee: Erin Ayers at [email protected]; Janet Cunningham at [email protected]; Alexis Kennedy at [email protected];or Vivian Scott at [email protected].

There is no other place you would rather be on Sunday, May 3 than at the Saint Vin-cent de Paul Style Show! Please join us at the 2015 SVdP Style Show as we bid a very special farewell to our Class of 2015! In recognition of the great friendships and great times our 8th graders have had at Saint Vincent de Paul, our theme will be “No Place I’d Rather Be” based upon the hit song by Clean Bandit.
Our guest of honor will be the one and only, Mrs. Joey Mann. Mrs. Mann began her teaching career at West Uni-versity Methodist when her daughter started school there. In 1990, when her daughter started PK at SVdP, Mrs. Mann decided to follow her daughter and joined the Saint Vincent de Paul staff as a 3rd grade teacher. When her
daughter graduated and left for St. Agnes, she teased her daughter and told her she would follow her to St. Agnes, but Mrs. Mann loved working at SVdP and she could-n’t leave. For 25 years the children, parents, and staff at SVdP have been blessed to have Mrs. Mann teach our 3rd graders.
Be sure to congratulate Mrs. Joey Mann on her dedication to the Saint Vincent de Paul community.
This year’s Style Show and Luncheon will be held at the Houstonian on Sunday, May 3 at 10:30 a.m. Teachers, 8th graders, and their siblings will be modeling fabulous fash-ions from Dillard’s. This special event is open to the en-tire school community. We hope to see you there!

Book Fair - Get Caught Reading
Breakfast with Santa & the Elf on the Shelf Patricia Sayegh and Jennifer Visintine chaired the annual Breakfast with Santa event on December 6, 2014. The School Choir performed Christmas songs while families enjoyed pancakes and breakfast tacos courtesy of the Knights of Columbus. Children wrote letters to Santa, decorated cookies, and made reindeer food while
adults enjoyed shopping in the holiday market. The highlight of the morning was a special visit from Santa Claus. It was a wonderful way to spend the morning in the Christmas spirit.
Gentine Meagher and Mildred Bautista chaired a fun-filled Book Fair. Author Kelly Milner Halls delighted classes with her presentations about dinosaurs and shared lunch with lucky contest winners. Middle school students participated in book club discussions on the Wefie Q series, culminating in a chance to dine with creator Eric Laster. Author Kathy Duval kicked off Family Night with a reading from her book Take Me to Your BBQ. Family Night also included the chance to meet Eric Laster, a lively magic show
(sponsored by the Dad’s Club), and a performance by the School Choir. Author Chris Cander signed copies of her book Word Burglar at Parish Morning. Over 675 books were donated to the SVdP library and class-rooms during Book Fair week. Classes with the high-est attendance for Parish Morning were Mrs. Max-well’s kindergarten and Mrs. Uruqhart’s 2nd grade class. The class with highest attendance at Family Night and winner of a pizza party and story time with Mrs. Sears was Mrs. Sprague’s 3rd grade class.

Dig Pink Faculty vs. Eighth Grade
Girls Volleyball Tournament
In support of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the faculty took on the Eighth Grade Volleyball District Champions in a tour-nament organized by Tiffany Leyendecker. The faculty won the first game 25-23, lost to the girls in the heated second game 26-28, but pulled it out to win the final game 15-12.
Preston Smith made some killer shots and the co-ed faculty team of Coach Mike DeLeon, Coach Andrea Nucete, Coach Marion Jones, Coach Ivory Young, Coach Mikki Burns, teachers Ashley Acomb, Keri Meyer, Victor Tan, Stephen Shaw, Tammy Ducote, Mr. Caram, and Mr. Gartrell gave it their all facing students Lindsay Bevers, Allison Clark, Delaney Kelly, Caroline Kherker, Kathleen Leyendecker, Katya Smith and Hannah Streitman. Coach Mike DeLeon’s play-by-play commentary delighted the crowd "...and there's an underhand serve from the faculty. I haven't seen one of those since the seventh grade!" and Su-san Kherker (parent of 8th Grader Caroline) also did a fantastic job as referee. Coach Young stepped in to coach the girls as they faced their coaches as competitors.
Teachers that helped work Admissions and Concessions in-cluded Ms. Tanner, Mrs. Mann and Ms. Asselin. Door prizes went to Hannah Streitmann and Caroline Kherkher, who each won INSTAX Mini 8 pink Polaroid cameras with film. Stasie Smith won the coveted Clarison-ic with Obagi facial cleanser.
