British ScientistIs Appointed toNew Inco Chair

The establishment of a chair inchemical metallurgy at ColumbiaUniversity, New York City, by Inco,Inc., has been announced by Dr.Grayson Kirk, Columbia's presi-dent.

Dr. Kirk said that the univer-sity's trustees have designated thenew chair as the Stanley-Thomp-son chair in honor of two out-standing alumni of Columbia'sSchool of Mines, Robert CrooksStanley, who was chairman of theboard and chief officer of Inco un-til his death in 1951, and JohnFairfield Thompson, chairman ofthe board and chief officer sincethat time. Mr. Stanley receivedthe degree of E.M. in 1901 and thehonorary degree of doctor ofscience in 1939. Dr. Thompsonreceived his B.S. degree in 1903,Ph.D, in 1906, and an honorarydegree of doctor of science in 1950.

In making the grant, Inco presi-dent Henry S. Wingate explainedthat the Company wishes to sup-port fundamental research in thesurface chemical and physical as-pects of many problems in mineralbeneficiation and extraction metal-lurgy.

"The demands made today forimproved practice in the extractionof metals from their ores, particu-larly necessary in a period of gen-erally rising industrial costs, callfor a better understanding of thescientific bases of this technology,"said Mr. Wingate. "We hope thatthis chair, the work of which willextend beyond many previousstudies on the properties of inter-faces, will encourage researchcontributions to basic knowledgein this important field."

Appointed to occupy the chair isDr. Jack Henry Schulman of Cam-bridge University, England, whowill begin his Columbia teachingduties immediately. Dr. Schulman,an outstanding British scientist,reader in surface chemistry atCambridge and a fellow of TrinityHall, Cambridge, has resigned hispost as director of the Ernest Op-penheimer laboratory in the De-partment of colloid science atCambridge University.

During World War ii he was ascientific advisor to the ministry ofsupply and helped to developspecial weapons for the BritishWar Office. He has been a direc-tor at the British Smelting Corp..Ltd, and scientifle advisor to sev-eral large British Coninionwealthjoining corporations and industrialconcerns.

Dr. Ward Joins Info's Toronto Staff

Ingo Metals at WorkIn Temperature Probe

As the new supersonic inter-ceptor streaks through the upperatmosphere at higher and higherspeeds, air friction on the skin ofthe craft sends temperatures soar-ing. This is the "thermal barrier"that engineers and designers arestriving to conquer . To study thisaerodynamic heating on newplanes, scientists employ an in-strument called a total tempera-ture probe. Platinum , gold, andchromium - nickel stainless steelcombine to make this tiny but im-portant unit possible.

The probe is mounted on theforward skin of the craft and, asspeed increases , feeds into a com-puter information on frictionalheating. This total temperature isessential for computing true airspeed. Rosemount EngineeringCompany of Rosemount , Minne-sota, design their model 101 tem-perature probe for speeds up toMach 3 (three times the speed ofsound) where readings above 630'F. are expected.

Including its threaded connec-tion, the body of the instrument isabout 4 inches long and tapersfrom a 5-inch diameter mountingring to a head 112-inch long.Chromium-nickel stainless steelwas selected for the body of theprobe because it is non-magneticand easily withstands the tempera-tures encountered. Joined byRosemount Engineering Companywith high temperature silver sol-der. the "18-8" stainless steel bodyhas the necessary strength toresist the severe vibration of jetaircraft.

A platinum sensing componentis located inside the head of theunit. This precious metal was

chosen for its stability at hightemperatures and because it willgive accurate readings over andover again. Built around the sens-ing element is a platinum-goldalloy radiation shield to prevent itfrom losing heat and giving incor-rect data.

Originally, the temperatureprobe was employed only on ex-perimental craft whose flightcharacteristics were not fullyknown, Now, since the newestoperational planes are regularlyattaining tremendous speeds, theunit has become standard equip-ment.

Goggles Saved Coniston Man's Eyesight

As it was he received only slightburns to his face and hands but there is no doubt he would have losthis sight if he had not been wearing goggles. Four others, workingnear him, who were wearing approved eye protection, also receivedsuperficial burns but no eye injuries.

.4 Strange Brew for Blasting -- but a Good One:

'First thing you know they'll beblasting with oatmeal," grinned theblaster, glancing briefly at hispartner to see if the humor wasappreciated. It was.

The scene was a bench at Inco'sLawson quarry, and Bill Gibson'sremark was prompted by the bagsof ordinary commercial fertilizerthat had been unloaded at the drillholes. These were to replace con-ventional blasting powder, someonesaid.

Well, Bill had blasted hundredsof holes and broken thousands oftons of quartz with good old BRXblasting powder, and you wouldhave to show him that seeminglyharmless fertilizer could shatterthose walls of rock.

But shatter them they did, andBill is now firmly convinced thatwhile oatmeal may never do it,fertilizer certainly can and does!

Ammonium nitrate fertilizer, anagricultural product, is the newvoice of authority in open pitblasting operations. Mixed in thedrill hole with a specified amountof fuel oil and a charge of powder,it works like a charm and thesaving in cost is up to 50' of thatfor conventional explosives.

The loose granules of ammoniumnitrate, known as prills, are dumpeddirectly into the drill hole fromthe bag, and by the addition offuel oil are converted into a mildlysensitive but highly efficient ex-plosive. The ratio of oil to nitrateis approximately one gallon per80-lb. bag. The carbon in the oilsensitizes the ammonium nitrate,which in itself is insensitive.

herent water resistance and cannotbe used without protection in wetholes as it will dissolve quitereadily. So bags of BRX blastingpowder are first placed at thebottom of a drill hole to a depthabove water level, on top of whichthe paper lining from the powderboxes is tamped in to form a drybase. The fertilizer and fuel oilare then poured in simultaneously,completing the pocket load of ap-proximately 15 feet. Two or threedeck loads of explosives are spacedin the remainder of the hole toassist in fragmentation. For spac-ing between the deck loads finelycrushed quartz is used, and, finally,the upper 15 to 20 feet of the holeis filled with quartz to eliminateilyrock.

Primacord is used to detonatethe BRX charge, which in turnserves as the detonator for therelatively insensitive fertilizer. Likethe stubborn mule, the fertilizerneeds a good kick to get it going.

Ammonium nitrate has been usedas an ingredient in the manufac-ture of commercial high explosivessince about 1867; most commercialhigh explosives made today containsome of this material. It firstreached prominence in World WarI, when it was widely used inmilitary explosives production. Inview of its high nitrogen content,efforts were made after the warto introduce it as a chemical ferti-lizer. At that time, however, it wasavailable neither in sufficient quan-tity nor in suitable form to findwidespread acceptance.

The discovery that ammoniumnitrate constitutes a powerful ex-plosive when sensitized with car-bonaceous material, such as finelyground coal dust or lamp black,or by hydrocarbons such as fueloil, was made only recently. Themixture is quite cafe to handle anduse, as it is not sensitive to initia-tion by shock or friction, or evenby commercial blasting caps, high

explosive or blasting agent primersbeing required to detonate it. Inthe confines of the drill hole hightemperature decomposition of am-monium nitrate proceeds at anexplosive rate, and it is this charac-teristic that forms the basis of itsuse in blasting.

Experiments with ammoniumnitrate as an explosive were com-menced by Ineo last summer atLawson quarry, and proved so suc-cessful that it is now in regularuse there. It has also been in-troduced at Frood-Stobie open pitwith marked success. At the presentstage of its development, however,it is not practical for use in under-ground mining.

There are two kinds of dis-content in this world: the discon-tent that works, and the discontentthat wrings its hands. The firstgets what it wants, and the secondloses what it had.

Gay Crowd Enjoys 8th Anniversary Dance at Carson Club

Handsome couples , good music , and a cabaret atmosphere made the 8th anniversary dance at the Inco Employees Club in Garson another worthyaddition to the long line of successful events that have been held in this popular hub of community activities . Many Inco MenBonspiel Winners

The second 8-ender in the 70-year history of the event was ahighlight of the annual bonspielof the Northern Ontario curlingassociation. Walter Dydyk ofCopper Cliff skipped the rink thatbuilt the perfect end, and his mateswere Art Carbone, Jack Medd, andPhil Forster.

As usual, Inco men were promi-nent among the 'spiel winners. Aconsistently strong NOCA per-former over the years, GordMcLean of the personnel depart-ment at Copper Cliff, led his mento victory in the Cochrane-Dunlopevent; with him were Tom Crow-ther, Vern Tupling, and J. Krystia.Walter Dydyk was runner-up inthe Cochrane, and El timphersonwas runner-up in the Algoma Steel,Dr. Charlie Jessop of Levackskipped the winning rink in theChapman Brothers, and Art Silverof Stobie, another consistently cool

A record entry of 96 rinks , allow-ing a perfect draw, made thebonspiel one to remember. Nine-teen curling clubs were represent-ed. The NOCA president, A. E.O'Brien, spoke highly of the workof the various committees handlingthe arrangements, and thankedprize donors for their outstandinggenerosity. One man who came infor special praise was the hard-working bonspiel secretary, TomCrowther.

Host club was Copper Cliff. withSudbury, Sudbury Granite, andFalconbridge also lending theirfacilities to provide a total of 19sheets of ice.

Helping the handicapped enjoylife is very rewarding work, asErnest Cornford of Inco's geologi-cal research department, will gladlytestify. One of several Sudburyindividuals and groups who regu-larly assists handicapped personsin some recreational outlet, heteaches members of the WhiteCane Club to square dance.

Twice a month Ernest and hiswife Doreen instruct a group ofdancing enthusiasts of limitedvision. Sessions are held in thebasement of the Church of theResurrection on Regent Street,with two and sometimes foursquares in action. Some of thedancers are totally blind and othershave up to 3017, vision, but all haveone thing in common - they enjoy

Despite their handicap manyhave developed into quite proficientsquare dancers, their teacher says,adding that a marked improve-ment in self confidence is alsonoticeable in those who havestayed with the group since itsinception some two years ago.

Teaching square dancing topeople of limited or no vision re-quires patience, tact and perse-verance. Explicit word picturesmust be given for each step. Con-tact figures are preferred over freefigures, the couples in a squareretaining physical contact through-out the dance. The tempo of themusic is slower. Those with somevision help the less fortunate.Apart from that they just go aheadand dance and enjoy themselves,according to Ernest.

The Cornfords have been squaredancing in Sudbury for over fiveyears. They were one of theoriginal couples who started with

His Father Cut Pulpi Wood on Elm Street

"My father cut pulpwood in Sud-bury from the post office cornerup to where the YMCA is today,"said Joe Lapointe, recalling thathis family moved from Montreal toSudbury in 1898. Although he wasquite young at the time Joe sayshe remembers that Sudbury wasn'tmuch of a place then, mostly mudroads and bush. His family movedto a farm near Garson, and whatwith the work to be done there andlack of facilities, Joe never didget around to going to school.

Be-tween new track, maintenance andrepairs Joe estimates that he wasresponsible for laying close to 100miles of track at Frood and Stobie.In 1945 he moved to Murray andhas laid more than 20 miles oftrack there, all 80-lb, rail too, headded.

Joe married Emelda Rouleau atChelmsford in 1916 and they havea family of five. Their daughterIrene is Mrs. Bill Urich of NewSudbury; sons Simon and Ger-main both work in the smelter atCopper Cliff, and Leo and Florentwork in Sudbury. They have ninegrandchildren.

Joe is more than happy to spendhis retirement years in Sudbury.Chores around his big home onElm street west give him a dandyopportunity to keep active, and thiscoming summer he and the boysplan on building a camp at Nepa-wassi lake.

In good health, he is enjoyinghis retirement to the full, and hasevery intention of making that aregular habit.

An innovation at Sudbury Public Library that has proved popular witha steadily growing number of music lovers is the Record Hour held everysecond Friday evening. High fidelity recordings of the operas are playedin the auditorium . Shown above chatting during an intermission afterlistening to Act I of Verdi's Aida with Renata Tebaidi singing the titlerole, are Ted Easton of Copper Cliff smelter, Jan Robertson , a nurse atSudbury Memorial Hospital , Ruth Geddes, of the Sudbury staff of theV.O.N., and Art Shaw, of the iron ore recovery plant . They said theythought the Record Hour an excellent project. and hoped it would becontinued.

Chappy Daoust onDisability Pension

Helping Fraser Brace build thebig Eddy dam back in 1927 gaveChappy Daoust his first introduc-tion to Inco. Liking what he sawand heard, Chappy hired on as afloorman at High Falls in 1929.He stayed there until 1942, thenJoined the RCAF and saw prac-tically all of Canada in his fouryears of service. Upon his returnto civies in 1946 he went to workwith the fitters at Copper Cliff.

He became a 1st class mechanicat the mill and for the last fiveyears worked at E station.

He retired in December on dis-ability pension with almost 29years of service.

Born at Papineauville in 1904,Chappy attended school in Hull.From 1921 to 1924 he worked onboats plying the Ottawa river be-tween that town and Montreal. Hewent with Fraser Brace in 1925and shortly afterwards qualified forhis stationary engineer certificate.On the Big Eddy job he ran thelocomotive from Turbine to HighFalls, transporting much of thematerial used on the project.

Inco has been a good place towork. Chappy said. and he ad-mitted he was sorry to leave. Heparticularly liked working at HighFalls where he said Geor,e Hart-man was like a father to him.Tom Strong at the mill also camein for favourable mention as afine supervisor.

In 1927 Chappy married Laudi-ane Charron at Hull_ Their threechildren are all married now:Huguette is Mfrs. St. Laurent ofHull, Paulin Mrs. Bazdel of theSon and Maurice is a plumber in

Sudbury. They have four grand-children.

Since most of their relatives andmany of their friends still are inHull, the Daousts have decided tomove there to live. Awaiting themove, Chappy is relaxing, recover-ing from the Christmas festivities,and generally enjoying his leisure.His many friends wish him well.

London for a visit and was met atthe airport by newsmen. "Goodmorning Chief," said one. "Didyou have a comfortable flight?"The chief made a series of rau-

"And how long do you plan tostay?" asked the reporter.

Prefacing his remarks with thesame noises , the chief answered,"About three weeks, I think."

After the now standard oink,honk, screech, z-z-z. the chief re-plied, "Short wave radio."

Raising Chinchillas InterestingHobby of Bob McMaster

Raising chinchillas as a hobbyhas given Bob McMaster a gooddeal of pleasure. A long timemember of the Frood carpentershop, he retired recently on dis-ability pension, and will now beable to devote full time to his base-men "ranch".

Bob brought the first pair ofchinchillas into the Nickel Districtback in 1945 and believes he is theonly one still raising them in Sud-bury today he said.

The royal chinchilla should notbe confused with the chinchillarabbit, Bob said in discussing hishobby with the Triangle. Develop-ed some years ago, the chinchillarabbit has fur similar in colour tothe true chinchilla, but the rabbitis one of the cheaper furs whilechinchilla ranks with the most ex-pensive. It is used for trimminggowns, and for capes and oc-casionally coats, the latter at al-most prohibitive cost.

Bob's first pair of breeders costmore than $1500. That was in1945, there were partners in theventure, and all thought theywould make a fortune. Today agood pair cost less than half thatsum and everyone knows there areno fortunes to be made. In acouple of years the first herd in-creased to around 40 and the part-ners sold out. Bob retained onepair and began raising them againat his Minnow Lake home. "Youdo get sort of attached to them,"he said.

At present Bob keeps about 20of these interesting little animalsin his basement and once a year"pelts" any excess. Originallyagents made regular calls andbought up all available animals inorder to establish them as breedersin other parts of the country. Few

skins were taken then, Bob said,but today they are produced insufficient numbers to market. Thechief source is the large chinchillaranches, and few individuals raisethem commercially.

According to Bob the chinchillais actually a rodent that originat-ed in the Andes mountains. It isamong the smallest of fur bearinganimals but one of the most high-ly prized. Considered by many tobe the finest in the world, its furis very light and fine, and silkysoft to the touch. In fact thefur is so fine that unless one iswatching it is difficult to tell whenthe hand comes in contact with it.

All pelts go first to Hamiltonwhere they are graded and match-ed for colour. The Montreal andNew York markets take them fromthere. Highest price for a peltlast year Bob said, was $56. Theaverage is around $30. A pelt isabout 8 by 12 inches. If the furis prime an animal can be peltedat eight months but full size is notusually reached until about 18months. The fur is bluish grey in

In theearly 1920's, however, an Americancaptured a few of these Andesdandies, brought them to Cali-fornia by slow stages to adjust toclimate changes, and in 1923 thefirst commercial chinchilla venturebegan. Today, according to thebreeders' national association,chinchilla breeding is an integralpart of the Canadian fur industry.

Bob says his animals require verylittle attention, are scrupulouslyclean, and have few diseases. Fleasor other parasites are unknown.They are amusing to watch andinteresting to raise. They usuallylitter twice a year, with an averageof two kits a litter. They are bornwith their eyes open and ready togo. They weigh about two ouncesat birth and 20 to 30 ounces atmaturity.

According to Bob their require-ments are simple. A wire pen,ventilation, some light, and clean,dry surroundings suffice. Sincethey are herbivorous their foodis commercially prepared pelletscontaining alfalfa, grains, bonemeal, etc. They are fed once daily.A sand bath helps keep their fur !in condition. They can live inbelow-zero temperatures if a littlestraw is provided for bedding.

Resembling both a rabbit and asquirrel, with big ears and bottlebrush tail, the chinchilla may behandled by either appendage. Iftaken young they make a nice pet,Bob said. He enjoys working withthem as a hobby and not as acommercial enterprise.

Chinchillas have been known tolive over 16 years but Bob hasfound that after eight to 10 yearstheir life expectancy is uncertain.He has one mature female whohas been breeding for more thaneight years, which he said is un-usual. Controlled inbreeding ispossible but fresh stock must beintroduced regularly. Bob is amember of the National Chinchilla

Raised on a farm near Colling-wood, Bob has always enjoyedworking with animals. Beforestarting to work at Frood in1933 he had made several harvestexcursions, operated a grocerybusiness in North Bay, and soldbrushes in Sudbury. At Frood heworked first in the yard, then wentunderground to escape the cold.He transferred to the carpentershop in 1934 and worked threeshifts on the gainer and framerfor the next 12 years.

In 1929 he married Iola Andersonin Stayner. Gardening is a favor-ite hobby with both of them, inaddition to the chincillas.

Joe Had a Big Season

The thrill of competing in theplayoff at Fort William for theright to represent Northern On-tario in the Canadian curlingchampionships was this season'sbig dividend for the copper re-finery 's Joe Harrison . He's seenon the right , above , conferring withhis skip , Milt Moran . Other mem-bers of their Sudbury Granite Clubrink were George von Zuban andSam Craig. After winning the dis-trict playoff at North Bay theywent on to give a good account ofthemselves before bowing out tothe hot Ron Redding quartet fromKenora.

Hi-Fi Fastest-Growing HobbySince Photography Invented

High fidelity, they say, has be-come the biggest new popular hob-by since the invention of photo-graphy.

Its appeal lies in its amazingability to create the illusion thatthe music you hear from record orradio is being performed "live"right in your room. The hi-fl wordfor this is "presence".

Bert Souch of the geological de-partment has a recording of thescreech, clatter and blast of apassing train. When he plays it onhis highly sensitive hi-fl rig, withthe power turned up to give fullrealism, it does everything butthrow cinders in your face. Youalmost jump back to keep fromgetting run over.

Less than 10 years ago, Bert toldthe Triangle the high fidelity in-dustry was confined to a few smallmanufacturers, working in garagesand lofts, who turned out queer-

looking electronic gadgetry whichthey sold to a few thousand cus-tomers called "audiophiles" - per-sons who love sounds.

The audiophiles assembled thestuff into spectacular phonographrigs which they put to odd uses.For example, they liked to turn thevolume up full and flood the neigh-borhood with a magnificent ren-dition of a rumbling summerthunderstorm. "In those days 'highfidelity' fans were such rare birdsthat if you heard a man complainabout 'flutter' or 'wow' you prob-ably thought he had a hangover,"Bert said.

Then music-lovers discoveredwhat high fidelity equipment coulddo in reproducing the sound madeby each instrument, from the glit-tering highs to the shadowy lows,distinctly and in total realism,giving them magnificently articu-lated music.

Frequently a person who hasnever heard hi-fi before can't be-lieve his ears . One man , hearinga record of Hayda's "Military Sym-phony" in a hi-fl salon for thefirst time , refused to believe itwas the same as the record hehad at home.

Swiftly the popular appeal of hi-fl spread from a comparative fewto thousands. Manufacturers keptpace by producing equipment tosuit every taste and purse, includ-ing do-it-yourself kits that havemade a tremendous hit amongpeople who find themselves beingintroduced to a fascinating newhobby in addition to musical en-joyment they never dreamed of.For the Sunday tinkerer, or radioamateur, hi-fli offers endlessamusement.

Dr. Jack Sturtridge, of the Incomedical staff at Copper Cliff, isanother of the steadily growingnumber of Incoites who have be-come hi-fl fans. "There is ofcourse a great deal of machinery inhi-fi, and there's ever more mysti-fication about what it does," hetold the Triangle. "Actually, a hi-t rig has the four major com-

ponents of the ordinary radio-phonograph: a record player, atuner , an amplifier and a loud-speaker. But in a high fidelity seteach component is a superbly pre-cise instrument.""Well what does high fidelity

do that an ordinary phonographdoesn 't?" he was asked.

"It simply does everything somuch better that the effect on thehearer is like taking off ear muffs,"was Dr. Jack's answer.

"When a musician plays a notehe makes the air vibrate. If heplays a high note the air moleculesdo a jig; if he plays a low notethey perform a more stately dance.For each note there is a vibrationrate, or 'frequency'. The bottomnote on a piano, for instance, hasa frequency of 27 .5 cycles per sec-ond, while the top note has afrequency of 4,186 cycles.

But if music were only a matterof frequencies, Dr. Sturtridge ex-plained, we couldn't tell one in-strument from another, for thefrequency of any note is the samewhether it is scraped on a string,blown through a horn or producedby the human throat. What en-

"Even for the hi-fi beginner it'seasy to realize what a differenceextremely sensitive and accurateequipment can make in reproduc-ing the most delicate overtones aswell as very low and very highwiggles of musical sound not nor-mally picked up by the humanear," said the doctor. "Musictakes on a brand new meaningThat's what hi-fi does for me."

From a hobby point of view hi-flis equally satisfying. There areso many links in the sound chain,including psychological factors,that no two people hear or "per-ceive" music to the same degree.As a result, no two hi-fl hobbyistswill agree on any single system. Asthe fan becomes immersed in hishobby, adding individual com-ponents to his initial installationin striving for still more faithfulreproduction of his music record-ings, he finds himself in a brandnew world of fun.

Al Hughes of the research de-partment, another Into hi-fl en-thusiast, told of one fan he readabout in Popular Science Monthly."He started with a rig that had asingle speaker. It wasn't quite goodenough on the low tones so headded a woofer, or low-registerspeaker. That left the high toneslacking, so he put in a tweeter totake care of them. That still wasn'tquite high enough fl so he put inan extra middle-range squawker.He now has something like 22speakers and isn't satisfied yet."

That of course is an extremecase. The average amateur willsettle for an outfit a good deal

more simple, and be quite satisfied.He'll find that the manufacturersof the self-assembly kits have an-ticipated a lot of his troubles, evento the point of color coding cablesso he can make the most difficultconnections by matching the colorof a cable to a socket. He also hashis choice of building his owncabinet, or buying the pieces readyto put together.

Hi-fi will be even higher whenthe industry perfects equipment forusing such great advances asstereophonic sound - a processof recording in which the sound ispicked up by microphones at twoseparate points, much as your twoears pick up slightly differing im-pressions of the same sound. Whenreproduced through two loud-speakers, its "presence" effect isfantastic. This third dimension insound is now available in tape re-cordings, but their reproduction re-quires much more than the aver-age hi-fl outfit. When it has beenperfected for easy-to-get disc re-cordings, music lovers will beushered into an almost unbeliev-able world of realism and enjoy-ment.

Lay Cornerstone of Coniston Curling Rink

A great event In Coniston 's history is recorded above as smelter super-intendent Fred Murphy, assisted by Gino Sartor , officiates at the layingof the cornerstone for the community 's new curling rink. Thirty four-somes from the Sudbury district took part in the bonspiel celebratingthe official opening of the fine big rink , which was built through theco-operative efforts of the citizens . A Copper Cliff team skipped by DougGathercole won the lit event.

Annual bowling championships have again been decided at the CopperCliff Club . In an exciting see-saw playoff of which the outcome wasin doubt until the last frame or two , Mrs. Peter Duffy's team won theRosemary Ovens trophy. Above are the happy champs , Mrs. CecilMathews, Mrs. Duffy, Miss Sandra McNeill , Miss Clara Simmons. Theother finalists were captained by Mrs . Malcolm Finlayson.

Defeating Cecil Coo's quintet in another close final match, DonMacLennan 's team won the Bert Flynn trophy, which they are seen herereceiving from Miss Katherine Flynn . On her right are Harry Phillipsand Don MacLennan , and on her left Bobby Phillips and John Gifford.She brought the good news that her famous father is making excellentprogress at the Copper Cliff hospital , where he has been a patient forseveral weeks.

Was a Rolling StoneUntil He Joined Inco

Clarence Brown, who has retir-ed on pension from the CopperCliff works, was raised in New-market and got his first job at awood factory in that town. "Wemade everything from pencils tobuckets to bookcases", he said.Deciding to see more of Canadahe left the pleasant routine of thatjob in 1925.

He spent the next couple of yearson fishing tugs out of Killarney,then from 1928 to 1930 worked as afireman on Great Lakes steam-boats. Laid off in midsummer atPort Colborne he headed west andin Alberta spent two years cuttingmine props in the bush. This paid$1.00 a day, he recalled, which waspretty good money during the de-pression.

Returning to Newmarket in 1934he worked for a time on road con-struction and at odd jobs.

In 1937, with $1.35 in his pocket,he started hitch-hiking for Kirk-land Lake, was picked up by twobricklayers who were working atCopper Cliff and within a matterof hiurs uas waiting in the Incoemployment office at Sudbury. A

friend he met unexpectedly stakedhim until he got a few pay chequesunder his belet, a good turn he hasnever forgotten.

Starting on the stripping floorfor Frank Wolfe he worked 11years in the Orford building beforemoving to the sinter plant wherehe was a machine operator formany years. When his heart start-ed giving out warning signals lastfall he decided to accept a dis-ability pension.

In 1937 Clarence married MaudeGamble in Newmarket. They haveone daughter Susan, aged 4.

His friends at the plant hopehe'll take things easy and enjoylife.

The pretty protagonists arenearly all members of Inco's officestaff at Copper Cliff. There aretwo teams, representing the pur-chasing and accounting depart-ments. In a two-game total-goalseries played recently at StanleyStadium, Purchasing topped theirfriendly rivals on the round, 5goals to 2. Zero Temperature Fails to ChillEnthusiasm of Scouts at Camporee

Inaugurating what it is hopedwill be an annual event, districtBoy Scout leaders were enthusias-tic about the success of their firstwinter camporee.

Held on Millard Lake , back ofBurwash , February 8 and 9 withaccommodations and services pro-vided by the host scouts , 1st Bur-wash troop , it drew more than 40scouts from eight troops. In chargewere adult leaders assisted byRover Scouts from Capreol andSudbury.

Emphasizing the "out" in scout-ing, practically all planned activi-ties were held outdoors despite zerotemperature , and the boys ' train-ing in pioneering and survival wasput to a real test. The group wasdivided into patrols of six or sevenscouts each , and activities were ona competitive basis. No. 2 patroltopped the rest of the field collect-ing 100 of the possible 120 points;scouts from 2nd and 11th Sudburytroops made up that patrol. No. 1patrol was formed by 1st and 3rdSudbury, patrol No. 3 by 2nd and4th Minnow Lake, patrol No. 4by 1st Waters, and patrol No. 5 by1st Copper Cliff.

First test of the day was a two-mile hike to the camp site, withpoints given for the best methodof packing gear into camp. Uponarrival sleeping and bivouac areaswere assigned each patrol and thenthe camp was officially opened, Thecamp was then put into shape withspecial attention given the kit-chen where the noon meal wassoon in preparation. All agreedthat Scouter Mitchell of Burwashperformed yeoman service as chiefof fire, water and food.

Afternoon activities led off withthe bivouac building competition,

with each patrol allotted 30 min-utes in which to provide adequateshelter for themselves. No. 2 patrolwon this. In the tree-felling con-test young Sandy Kippen (son ofFrood shift boss Stan Kippen)dropped his tree right on the markto cop that event for his patrol.

Semaphore competition follow-ed, then work began on the patrolcamp kitchens, which were built ateach bivouac. Later patrol cooksdrew rations from the main campwhile others cut wood and gener-ally prepared their camps for theday's big event, cooking the even-ing meal in the open.

As shadows lengthened the firstflicker of firelight appeared andsoon the crisp winter air wasfilled with the wonderful aromaof pine smoke. As flames leapedhigher pots and mess tins werereadied, clean snow put on to melt,potatoes prepared, soup heated.Then, as the crowning touch,generous steaks were set to sizzlingand browning in smoking pans atthe five separate fires, each ofwhich had its circle of ravenousboys.

Supper over, utensils werescoured and fires carefully ex-tinguished, then all returned tothe main camp. A rest period,games, canteen and a huge outdoorcampfire completed the eveningactivities, with the 10 o'clock cur-few finding all sleeping bags oc-cupied.

Sunday morning saw an earlybreakfast, and at 8.30, in a nose-nipping north wind, the ice-cut-ting competition got under way.Other activities included fire light-ing, compass and pacing, and skiand snowshoe races. Religious ser-

was dismantled and cleaned up,presentations were made, flagslowered and by 3 o'clock all wereready to leave for home, feelingthat they had had a wonderfulweekend with excellent food andfun. This coupled with the op-portunity for scouts to preparethemselves for the more advancedproficiency badges made the out-ing just about tops.

Camp chief for the occasion wasassistant district commissionerSteve Burns. He was assisted byScouters Francis, Easton (Frood),Moncion FFrood), Dixon (Creigh-ton), Neal (Copper Cliff) andPierce Plus the Rover Scouts. Allagreed that for a first attemptthere were very few miscues andthe experience gained will makethe next camporee that muchbetter. Future plans include the

possibility of spending a nightunder canvas.

In local scouting circles winteractivities are becoming more popu-lar and several troops have spenta Saturday or Sunday at theWindy Lake camp.

The decision to hold one big an-nual wing-ding for all copper re-fining division employees retiringduring the year, instead ct a sep-arate party for each man, provedto be a popular one. The firstgathering of this nature was anunqualified success.

More than 300 friends crowdedthe Caruso Club, Sudbury, to givetheir departing workmates a rol-licking sendoff, and it would bethe understatement of the year tosay that everybody had a goodtime. A delicious chicken andspaghetti dinner, professional en-tertainment, and the presentationof a gift to each departing memberrounded out a fine evening ofgood-natured ribbing and revelry.

Sandy McGillivray and CecilMathews well deserved the acco-lades they received for the way theparty was arranged. Master ofceremonies was Jack Latreille.

Presentations to the guests ofhonor were made by Ernest Ra-beau, assistant to the manager ofthe copper refining division, andFred Sheridan, superintendent ofthe casting department.

The Old Iron MineNot So Bad at That

Although working in an ironmine in Luxembourg during WorldWar I was no picnic, it did haveat least one compensation - thewater was so bad the men wereforced to drink apple cider, allthey wanted!

Authority for this is Stobie elec-trical department's Marcel Schu-macher. Marcel was an apprenticeelectrician in both the mine andadjoining iron works and recallsthe "hardship" quite clearly.

After the armistice Marcel wentto Liege in Belgium and worked {with the Ingersoll people theremaking compressors.

Joining a cousin in Canada in1927 he hooked up with the BellTelephone company and spentseven years helping instal tele-

phone exchanges In Montreal. Hewas laid off in 1934 and workedat several jobs for short periodsbefore coming to Inco in 1938.

He started with the electricaldepartment at Copper Cliff, andrecalls teaming up with BarneyHamilton on one of his early jobson the roasters. He was transferredto Stobie in 1948 and worked thereas a maintenance electrician untilillness sidelined him.

In 1932 he married LorettaI Beausoliel in Peterborough. Their

son Tom works in Sudbury, andtheir daughter Margaret is mar-ried to Lorenzo Noel of Frood.They have one grandchild whoMarcel says is a real going con-cern.

Many years ago Marcel spottedsome nice farm country near ThreeRivers, P.Q., and is now seriouslythinking of starting a chickenranch there . At present he Isoperating a pilot plant at homewith the little female finch heimported from Belgium. A raredomestic bird in these parts, theonly mate Marcel could find forher was a broad -minded canary.She has laid two eggs, one tooclose to the edge of the cage un-fortunately , and is at presentsitting on the other . The blessedevent is awaited almost as eagerlyas another grandchild . Marcel haspromised to keep the Triangleposted on what this Fincan orCanfin looks like, so there may bea later bulletin.
