gas, electrical and water usage for each building. The first build-ing to be so automated is the prestigious 404 Wyman Street building in Waltham, MA, which in the past won the Judges’ Grand Design award from the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) as the best overall project for its sustainable design and unique approach to cooling the building through thermal ice storage.

The Superior Controls design will use Iconics’ Energy Analytics software, and will continuously collect real time electrical meter-ing information from 78 separate points, lighting usage informa-tion, and gas and water metering information from multiple loca-tions throughout the building. This real time energy information will be displayed for tenants on flat screens in their lobbies.

Superior Controls Funds university labSuperior Controls has provided resources to refurbish the Process Controls

Lab for the University of Mass. Lowell Chemical Engineering Department. In turn, theUniversityhasrenamedthelabthe“SuperiorControls–ProcessandControls Laboratory.”

Superior Controls has formed a close relationship with the university over the past 18 years and has provided automation equipment, engineering support, guidance and funding. Four years ago, for example, Superior Controls provided the funding to purchase 22 personal computers and refurbish the entire chemical engineering computer lab, which was aptly rechristened as the “Superior Controls-Chemical Engineering Computer Laboratory.” In addition, SuperiorControlspresident,RickPierro,isthelong-termcochairmanoftheChemical Engineering Advisory Board and current chairman of the Advisory Board for the College of Engineering at the university. Pierro also gives a talk every year to the incoming engineering class about why he studied chemical engineering and what types of automation and engineering projects are imple-mented at Superior Controls.

The benefit to all is that more superbly trained and capable engineers graduate from our local universities and contribute to our economic growth and future.

Dr. Al Donatelli (Left), Director of The Chemical Engineering Department at UMass Lowell, congratulates Rick Pierro, president of Superior Controls.
