People who are looking for an indoor activity this spring might consider researching their family history. One of the primary rules to follow in this quest is to start with what you know. For some, this involves verifying information that you have heard from your parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Others have no verbal background, only a birth or baptismal certificate or a marriage license. And some have no family members to ask or written documents. Those of us who are part of the Bellevue University community are fortunate to have access to two genealogical databases to begin the search. All Bellevue University alumni, students, staff, faculty, and community users can use ―Ancestry Library Edition‖ and ―Heritage Quest‖ to begin your family heritage journey. Two members of the Bellevue University Library staff recently were moderators for a workshop entitled ―Getting Started on Your Genealogy.‖ During the workshop, attendees shared initial steps and sites that have worked for them. For those of you who were not able to attend, here are some of the steps involving ―Ancestry Library Edition‖ that were shared. One of the beginning steps in researching if one is going to record your findings in a print format is to buy a sturdy three-ring binder, preferably with pockets, and at least four index tabs. Label the index tabs with the last names of your four grandparents, using the spelling that you believe is correct. This is one surprise that you may encounter; family names that you have always thought you knew may not be the legal names of your ancestors. Next, access ―Ancestry Library Edition‖ from the Library‘s Complete Database List on the home page and click on the ―Charts and Forms‖ tab at the top of the page. Click on the Ancestral Chart Download Form link to print off one copy. You now have a systematic form for recording basic heritage information. Again, start with what you know. Using a pencil with a good eraser, fill in your legal first, middle, and last name on the line on the left. Record your birth date and city, county, and state where you were born. If you are married, fill in your wedding date and city, county, and state where the wedding took place, as well as the full legal name of your spouse. This may be another surprise; your spouse‘s legal name may be different from the one he/she always uses and prefers. Now you are ready to move to the right and fill in the same information for your parents. Decide whether you will list your father first or your mother first by which side of the family you know more about. If you have more initial information on your father‘s side, list him second and your mother first. For all of the married couples, follow the same pattern. In this example, list all of the women‘s information first, and all of the men‘s information on the line below. Once you have completed all of the information that you know on the Ancestral Chart, the verification process (and the surprises) continue. Go back to the ―Ancestry Library Edition‖ home page, and click on the ―Search‖ tab at the top of the page. If your parents were born in 1930 or before, click on the ―Census and Voter Lists‖ line of the drop-down menu. If your parents are younger than that, research your grandparents. Where you go next depends on where your parents or grandparents lived in 1930. You narrow your search by clicking on U.S., United Kingdom, Canadian, or other country census. Surprises abound during family history research; family lore that you have heard for years may not be correct. You may discover that what you thought was your mother‘s first name was either Family Heritage Research — Be Prepared for Surprises! Did you know there is a group who actively promotes testing standards

The National College Testing Association (NCTA) does just that This group consists of members from over six hundred colleges and forty corporations

NCTA is the largest organization in the world dedicated to the establishment recognition and promotion of professional testing standards and practices

This organization maintains a comprehensive set of standards for test centers which administer paperpencil and computer-based tests

The Bellevue University Test Center has been a long-time member of the NCTA and was given the opportunity to apply for a professional

development grant The Test Center Manager embraced this prospect and developed a grant proposal focused on

collaboration and teambuilding The grant application was submitted for consideration

The Test Center was honored that the NCTA grant committee approved the proposal and a $500 grant was awarded to pursue this

endeavor These funds will be put to good use by the Test Center team along with several members of the Center of Student Engagement (CSE) who

identifying the activity or dates from a photo Any additional history would be a great benefit to us and to your fellow users as we do get requests from alumni

or family of alumni who would like a connection to their past at Bellevue University F u r t h e rm o re t h e archives are organized into
