August 6, 2017 Volume 14, Number 32 Good morning, Northside Family. Last Sunday was a great day as our Elders introduced Conner Smith as Northsides new Youth Minister. Conner was raised in Benton and at Northside, the son of Kevin & Suzie Smith. Conner is a graduate of Benton High School and Arkansas State University. He spent two summers during his college years interning with the ministry staff at Northside. During both of those summers, he impressed the lead- ership with his diligence, his organization, spiritual maturity and compassion. And, Conner has hit the ground running by leading our teens on a day-long hike at Pinnacle Mountain yesterday, complete with a time of devotion. Join me in praying for and encouraging Conner as he begins to make a real spiritual dif- ference in the lives of our children. The fundraising outreach dinner with Jase Robertson, sponsored by Supreme Fixtures, Inc., is just nine days away! Chris & Tammy Givens have graciously volunteered to provide childcare at the church building for our parents with young children. Also, ladies, the committee planning this event is asking for help with desserts. If you could assist by preparing a banana pudding, chocolate cake, or two dozen cook- ies (chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, or sugar), please let Chad or Trena Slaughter know. You can also sign up on the bulletin board next to the church office. At last Tuesdays monthly Elders meeting, our Shepherds decided that beginning September 10, our morning start times will move up 30 minutes. Beginning Sunday, September 10, our Bible classes will begin at 9:00 a.m. and worship will begin at 10:00 a.m. Also on that day, we will kick off our Fall Semester of LIFE Groups. Billy McLain has done an ex- cellent job this past year organizing our groups and creating curriculum for our discussions. Each fall, we reorganize our groups for the next 12 months. If you would be interested in leading a group or hosting one in your home, please let Billy know today. More information will be forthcoming about sign up for a fall group. This fall will also bring another three-month, 13-week session of GriefShare. During the fall and spring, 2016 and 2017, 52 people from our church family and community benefitted from GriefShare groups. GriefShare will begin on Wednesday, September 6 and run from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. each Wednesday. If you have experienced a loss and are struggling to cope, GriefShare will be of great benefit to you. Even if you havent suffered a loss, but wish to better understand what grief is and how to help oth- ers who grieve, then you are welcome to join us also. Good morning, Northside Family. Last Sunday was a great day as our Elders introduced Conner Smith as Northside’s new Youth Minister. Conner was raised in Benton and at Northside, the son of Kevin & Suzie Smith. Conner is a graduate of Benton High School and Arkansas State University. He spent two summers during his college years interning with the ministry staff at Northside. Billy’s Thoughts Looking down the road a bit, I thought I’d preview three late summer and fall activities that I hope will aid you in planning your schedule. Thursday, August 17 at 11:30 a.m. is the next potluck for our Joy Group. The Joy Group is defined as any-one and everyone 55 and older here at Northside, especially those of you who have retired and are available during the daytime, but non-retirees, too. These potlucks are a fun time as well as good food. August’s meeting is im-portant, since we haven’t met since May, and to plan a few things for later in the year. Please come with your ideas for this ministry or future activities. Typically, we meet on each third Thursday for a potluck. September is traditionally the Harding University Lectureship. This year, the theme of the classes and key-note lectures is, “Righteousness from God – the Revolutionary Message of Romans.” Another tradition is the La-dies’ Lecture series on Tuesday, simultaneous to other classes open to everyone throughout the day. I will plan to take one of our church vans on Tuesday morning, returning around supper time, for anyone who would like to go together. October 6 & 7 is the date of the Northside Men’s retreat. This year, it will take place out at Corin Read Christian Camp. Jim Martin will share some words of wisdom; back in the winter he did a great job sharing with the elders and ministers (also at Corin Read). It’ll give us men an opportunity to relax for brief time. My favorite time when out at Corin Read, after all is said and done, is just sitting by a fire in the fireplace and talking or not. I’m excited for Northside and our youth as Conner begins his work as Youth Minister. May God bless you, Conner, and may He also bless our teens and their families with great spiritual growth in the years ahead! Amen!

Conner’s Contemplations Well here we are! The beginning of my tenure at Northside! I cannot express how excited and humbled I am to be here and have this opportunity. For those who do not know me very well, I grew up in this church. I went through the youth group back when Jimmy Mitchell was the Youth Minister, and I loved every moment of it. When I graduated high school I went to Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. While I was there, I studied Strategic Communication, and Spanish. During two of my summers there, I came back home and was the Youth Intern under Rick & Keely Treadway. It was during that time that I learned my passion for working with the teenagers. Howev-er, I did not know at the time that my calling was to be in Youth Ministry. Yet the Lord has brought me home, and given me the drive and desire to work with our Youth, and hopefully make an impact on their lives. To take a sharp turn from me, and to focus back on the youth group, I want to give the parents and members a peek into some of the ideas we are already working on for the fall semester and the following year. My intention and, several of the youth, is to make some quite large changes to some of the youth group activities, classes, and trips coming up. First of which, is the Fall Retreat. I have talked to Rick and Keely and we have decided to plan it together. This year the youth group will be returning to Timberlodge Ranch (September 29-October 1) and learn about the topic of “Love First.” It will be a needed break from school, and hopefully every teenager will leave uplifted, and knowing they are loved by such a large group of people! The next big changes will come in the form of service pro-jects! These were such a huge part of my time here in the youth group and they brought me not only closer to Christ, but to my friends and the community at large. My idea is that these service projects, whatever they will be, will help us reach out to our community and learn a little more about serving like Christ. My final bit of information is for our Youth Group Parents. I’m sure many of you have questions, ideas, con-cerns, and advice! I look forward to hearing all of them! That being said, we will have a meeting after school starts for all of the parents to sit-down with me and discuss the youth group and its general direction. I look forward to working with the Northside Youth Group and all that comes with it! In Christian Love, Conner Smith

Dear Northside Family: Thank you from Terry and me for all the prayers, calls, visits and thoughts over the past cou-ple of weeks. His surgery went well and I appreciate Mari-lyn Wilson for sitting with me at the hospital. Also thanks to Jennifer and Jarrod, Callie, Josiah and Sawyer for supper! Thank you Billy for visiting us both while Terry was in sur-gery and I was in the Cath lab. God worked everything out perfectly so that Terry was healed enough and I was treated in just the right time to prevent a possible heart attack or worse. We are lucky and blessed to have our human family close and our Christian family just as close! Your out pour-ing of love is greatly appreciated! Love Terry and Jan
