St. Luke's United Methodist "Thoughts and Reflections..." “You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.” 2 Corinthians 9:11 Thanksgiving depends on us. I’m not talking about Thanksgiving Day dinner; I’m talking about cultivating an attitude of gratitude that produces thanksgiving to God. What does that look like for us? I believe that when we are grateful to God in all situations, God allows generosity to live and grow in us and as Paul writes, it is our generosi- ty which produces thanksgiving to God. When we practice an attitude of gratitude and become more generous in every aspect of our lives, God experiences thanksgiving. In this way, thanksgiving is not a spe- cial day in the month of November; it is an active way of living out our Christian discipleship. Our United Methodist church membership vows call upon us to be generous with all of our gifts…our finances, our prayers, our service, our witness to Jesus Christ. When we prac- tice generosity in all things, we are actively thanking God for God’s movement of grace in every aspect of our being. It is not about us; it is about God. “WE GATHER TOGETHER”

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2016, AT NOON

FELLOWSHIP HALL

The church will provide turkey, dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce, bread, and drinks.

We ask each family to bring two (2) of the following:

salad, vegetable, dessert. Reservations should be made no later than Monday, November 14, 2016.

Sign-up sheets are located on the lighthouse in the narthex, or you may call the church office.

Please join your St. Luke’s family for a time of “Thanksgiving” as we praise God for the countless blessings He has shown us during this year.

NEWS FROM THE ALTAR GUILD

We will decorate the church for Advent on Tuesday, November 22nd. All who would like to help, please meet in the church sanctuary at 12:00 noon. Poinsettias will again be offered In Memory of or In Honor of a loved one, and will be used to decorate the Sanctuary on December 4th and 11th. Please use the enclosed form if you wish to order Poinsettias. Older Adult Poinsettia Delivery Poinsettias will be available for delivery to our shut-ins starting 9:00 a.m. till noon on Monday, December 12th. A card with the name and address of the shut-in will be attached to the poinsettia. Your help is cru-cial in order for our shut-ins to get their poinsettia in a timely manner, so they can enjoy it during the holi-day season! Please! do not remove, leave, or exchange the cards on the poinsettias.

Once again, you will have the choice of sending Christmas cards through the church’s mail center, or by making a donation to the church, and writing your own Christmas wish to the congrega-tion. These Christmas wishes will be printed in a special insert to be included in the Sunday, December 11th bulletin. Some of us find it difficult to address cards due to arthritis or other ailments. Others

have difficulty getting out and shopping for cards, and others have time restraints. A Christmas wish in the bulletin insert is a way to express your sincere feelings for the congregation and a means of contributing to the church’s gen-eral fund budget. The DEADLINE for submitting your Christmas message is 9:00 A.M., MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28TH.

FROM OUR CHURCH COUNCIL CHAIR THANK YOU

GRASS CUTTERS – St. Luke's has been blessed again this year because members of the congregation stepped-up and cut the grass and edged the church yard. A huge THANK YOU to Dennis Blackstock, Glenda Boswell, Bill Cook, Larry Davis, Sherman England, Patty Gann, Mark McKinney, Sherrill Pickeral, Bill Raines, Duane Rohlfsen and Perry Taylor. Each of these members gave of their time and energy. The money we saved by doing this ourselves is over $11,000! MILDRED DORMAN – Thank you for sharing your talent each Sunday morning by playing the piano. Hearing both the organ and piano adds to our worship experience and the beauty of the service.

CHRISMONS Bev Nixon and Patty Gann attended the Chrismon Workshop at Ascension Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 15 and made the “Jesus Cross”. This is a beautiful three dimensional cross with pearls tucked inside. The last 2016 workshop at Ascension Lutheran is scheduled for November 12 at 9:00 a.m. Please call Ascension Lutheran at 792-5795 to register. We will have a Chrismon Tree in the Chapel for the Advent season.

BACKPACK MINISTRY As of October 19, we will be preparing backpacks for forty-three kindergartners and fifty first graders. What a wonderful and fulfilling ministry this is for the members of St. Luke's. Janice and I continue to explore ways and means of raising money for backpacks. We are working with Wendy's to sponsor a Night-Out for the Backpack Ministry. A percentage of the sales at Wendy's that date would come to the Backpack Ministry. Watch your bulletins for the date. For a child to receive a backpack, their parent or guardian has to sign the child up for the ministry. A child may enter the program at anytime during the school year. This means that children that transfer into the school, their parents/guardians have the option of having that child receive a backpack on Friday.

Experiencing God In the summer and fall of 2014, members of the church opted to participate in a study titled Experi-encing God. One of the principles in this study was that as a person and as a church we should be willing to meet GOD where he is at work in our lives or in the life of the church. To me this means I pray and listen for God's guidance rather than going my own way. To me it speaks of trust and faith. Do I trust GOD to provide for me and will I be faithful to his direction. Please pray about meeting GOD where he is at work in our lives and in the life of St. Luke's.

Patty ELECTION DAY COMMUNION Tuesday, November 8th, at 7:15 p.m. Fairview United Methodist Church

WELCOME TO OUR ST. LUKE’S CHURCH FAMILY On Sunday, October 23rd, we welcomed Joe and Marie Minter, and Scott and Ailsa Price into our church family. Below is an introduction to our newest members. Joe and Marie Minter: Joseph and Marie Minter have been married for 22 years in November. They have 3 children at home, Zoe 17, and Sarah and Sean who are 10. They have two sons, Jonathan of Patrick County, VA and Jeremy of Rolesville, NC. They also have 5 grandchildren. Joe retired after more than 41 years in general commercial printing. Marie worked with many aspects of Computer Science for 29 years in Banking and Accounting. They are enjoying being retired, and have lots of time to spend with their children who keep them busy most of the time with dance, soc-cer and Tae Kwon Do. Joe was previously a member of First United Methodist Church, Martinsville, VA and Marie was a member at Winston-Salem First in Winston-Salem, NC. They became acquainted with St. Luke’s, through Scouts and the After school Program. Joe’s moth-er also attended the Church after her move to Danville. They have always felt comfortable and wel-comed by this congregation and look forward to their recommitment of faith and the blessings of hav-ing a permanent Church family. Scott and Ailsa Price: Scott and Ailsa Price both grew up in scenic Ashe County, NC. Scott’s parents are Douglas and Belinda Price of Boggs, NC. Scott was a member of Round Knob Baptist, where he attended ser-vices with his grandmother. Ailsa’s parents are Michael Greer, of Fleetwood, NC and Geneva Shep-herd of Miller’s Creek, NC. Ailsa's family did not routinely attend church. However, she was able to attend Ashe County Christian Academy during high school. Scott and Ailsa met through a mutual friend, and they began dating on Ailsa’s 16th birthday. They were engaged by December 1997, and married at Midway Baptist Church on August 8, 1998. Kiley came many years later, in October 2006. Scott and Ailsa moved to Danville after she took a teaching position at Twin Springs Elemen-tary following her graduation from Appalachian State University. Scott has three degrees in IT, and he has worked in the IT department of Abbott labs in Altavista for 8 years. Ailsa has three degrees in education, and she taught special education students in grades K-5 at Twin Springs Elementary. Unfortunately, after 13 years of teaching, Ailsa had to resign due to chronic pain and fatigue associ-ated with autoimmune disorders. Despite this, she feels blessed to have the opportunity to home-school Kiley in a Christian home and be a positive Christian role model for her troop of Girl Scouts. The Price family visited several churches in the Danville area off and on for years. Ailsa has been a Girl Scout troop leader at St. Luke’s for over three years, and Kiley is in her second year of St. Luke’s All God’s Children program. In the fall of 2015, Stacy Goldean encouraged the family to at-tend a few St. Luke’s services. St. Luke’s ended up being a perfect fit, and the Price family has at-tended St. Luke’s services and activities routinely since then. They say that they already feel like members of the church, but it will be nice to be “official” members.

In September and October We have been learning the fruits of the spirit. There are nine fruits of the spirit and we have nine members in our youth group. Each youth has picked a fruit that he or she feels they represent and hope to build and learn more about. We participated in the Prison Ministry walk and Crop walk. We are also finishing our youth room transformation. We have had several paint days and hopefully our room will be finished by the time you receive this newsletter.

There Are Angels Among Us!

Our St. Luke’s Youth will be sponsoring an Angel Tree Mission Project. For a $10 donation, a “Wing” may be placed on the Angel Tree in memory or in honor of a special person in your life.

Members of our Youth will be in the narthex each Sunday, November 13-December 11 before and after the 11:00 a.m. service to sell angel wings. One hundred percent of proceeds benefit youth in our church and community. Please support this mission and St. Luke’s tradition.

If you have any questions, please contact Sherri Garrett, and thank you!!

Thank You!

“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you. I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel…” Philippians 1:3-4 Phillip Winstead and Virginia Frost for graciously inviting the youth to the Winstead Cabin on Sunday, October 16. They provided food and wonderful fellowship. Thank you to all the parents who helped finish painting the Youth room on Saturday, October 15. Thank you for giving your time and assisting in beautifying our room.

Thank you to St. Luke’s UMC for all of your support and love for our Youth.

WE NEED YOUR DATE OF BIRTH

If you do not see your birthday listed in the monthly birthday calendar, please contact the church office so that we may update our records.

To My St. Luke’s Church Family, Words can not express my appreciation for all the love shown to me at my retirement luncheon, and also during my twenty years as sexton at St. Luke’s. The luncheon meant so much to me and I will treasure the many cards and gifts given to me by each of you. I will miss being at the church working each day, but will see you at church on Sundays and at all the many special occasions. Love, Jimmy (Gillie)

Thank You Dear St. Luke’s UMC Thank you for your generous gift of $250.00 in sup-port of the Henry Fork Service Center. As undesignated, your gift will go into the Center’s operating budget which supports Afterschool and Summer programming for over 70 students. Thank you, J. Anderson

Thanks to all the members of St. Luke’s UMC for their prayers, cards, phone calls and visits during my stay in the hospital and Riverside Nursing Home. I had to have a complete hip replacement and it will take a few months or more before I will be able to move around a lot, but at the same time I am improving. I want to give a double thank you to three (3) members of our church who came to see me in the hospital and at home (they are just 90 plus years old.) They also made me a cake. How lucky we are to have members of our church like these 3 members. Thanks again for your support. Bob Worley

Thanks So Much for Your Help A little kindness makes such a difference in a day...

Your thoughtfulness certainly made a difference in mine. Thanks for the use of the Church Bus. Bobby (Johnson)
