Thanks to Barbara (Mar) Van Eynde’71, her husband Phil Van Eynde and theGolf Committee members, the 2008CHSAA Golf Scramble was resurrectedafter a two-year hiatus. The seventh-annual CHSAA Golf Scramble wasconducted Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, atthe Willows Run Golf Course inRedmond, Wash.

“Beautiful day, great golf course, lotsof fun and great friends,” said Jack Avery,a first-time participant.

It was indeed a beautiful, brisk fallmorning, and 45 CHS alumni and friendsof CHS gathered for a fun-filled day ofgolf, renewing old friendships andmaking new friends.

Once again, the scramble format wasused. A new twist this year was using a“licorice rope” on the greens. The teamwas allowed to use the length or a portionof the licorice rope to save a puttingstroke on an individual hole. Thisinnovation made every team competitive, added another strategy to the game, waslots of fun and was a tasty snack. Thecaveat was you could buy extra ropes toenhance your chances of victory.

Another innovation this year was asilent auction. This was very well-receivedby the participants.

There were several thousand dollarsof prizes and awards. Once again, we hadclosest to pin, longest drive, straight driveand putting contests.

The entry fee was $100 and includedgreen fee, golf cart, lunch, awards andprizes.

When all was said and done and allthe bills were paid, we had a profit of$2,000 for the CHSAA Scholarship Fund. This will be matched with a grant wereceived for $2,000 from the state.

Following is a list of winning teams:

Eagles in flight

Mr. Dolstad was my junior and senior high school, homeroom teacher, classadvisor and my typing teacher. The impact he had upon my life has left animprint never to be erased!

I remember feeling shy and lacking in confidence when I entered ClevelandHigh in the seventh grade. But that would soon change. Little did I realize myworld was about to be turned upside-down by a certain teacher. I would never bethe same during those six years [or] after my 1958 graduation.

Each time I met with Mr. Dolstad for different reasons, he took time toinstill confidence, hope, encouragement and a purpose for my life. He investedhis time in me and believed in me more than I believed in myself.

Knowing my parents were divorced when I was a young child and [that I]didn’t have a father influence, I think Mr. Dolstad made up special meetings justto help me feel special and to discover I had something to offer. Because of hisinfluence, I wanted to contribute and even somehow make a difference. Hepushed me to work hard, to learn how to organize activities, to be a leader andeven [be] the president of my sophomore class!

I never dreamed something like that would happen. Under protest, Mr.Dolstad placed my name on the ballot just to prove to me I could win theposition of the president. And I won!

He became like a father to me, a father I never had to lean on. He was mydad at every father-daughter banquet. He made me feel important and special, and I was so proud to be with him —just like a daughter should be with herfather!

Everyone needs a special teacher to help make a difference in the life of astudent, a difference like Mr. Dolstad made in my life. If he had not been myteacher and mentor, I would have remained uninvolved, shy and a stay-in-the-background kind of person. But God blessed me with a teacher, a teacher namedMr. Dolstad, who valued me, and he, in turn, became a treasured gift I continueto value to this day.

What a great ride high school was —so many memories.

Our class did an historical retrospec-tive of the area called “DuwamishDream,” which explored how the areafrom Elliott Bay to Georgetown wasdeveloped. I had a small role. However, Iplayed second lead in the senior play called“Too Many Dates” (boy, we were tamethen). All I can recall is that we did asketch in the play where one of the maleactors dressed as a female, and I dressedas a male. I remember we were sitting in atoy car onstage, where we made fun ofdating mores of the day.

One of the jobs I had (aside fromgetting good grades) was being the“banker” for our class. Remember whenwe collected money from the kids whoparticipated and took them to a centraldeposit near the gym? These deposits

were then transferred by a teacher toWashington Mutual Bank.

I was Miss Walthew’s assistant in herclass and secretary to the vice principal fortwo years. Once a week, my schoolmateand I could afford to stop at the EaglesRoost nearby and have a lime sherbet icecream cone — a nickle. Money was suretight back then. My allowance was $1 aweek. Wow!

The scariest moment was in Septem-ber 1949, when I looked at the 10th-grademath book and saw my first algebraproblem. Uh-oh! It made no sense to methat you could add up letters and get anumber answer. I ran (did not walk) tothe guidance counselor’s office and toldhim I’d never pass any algebra or geom-etry class. So he suggested I take acommercial course.

Since I was already taking shorthand

and typing, it was easy to add in book-keeping and office machines. When Igraduated, my typing speed was a gigantic45 wpm, but by 1975, it was 90 wpm.And I worked at a job I loved for 25years: executive legal secretary.

My one claim to fame is that I typedup the incorporation papers for theWestin Hotels when they opened the veryfirst one in Seattle. Did you know that’swhere the chain originated? I believe thelocation was where the old Orpheumtheater was located near The Bon Marche.

What fun we all had at the 50-yearreunion in 2001. Who could believe it hadbeen that long.

My family was poor, even by ’51standards, but I received a great educationat my alma mater — and had a wonderfultime in the process.

Thanks to all of the alumniwho supported the creation of theEd Landon Scholarship fund at theend of 2007. The AlumniAssociation matched the EdLandon Scholarship commitmentof awarding two $3,000scholarships.

This summer, four deservingCleveland students began theireducational dreams. The combinedtotal of $12,000 is the highestamount ever awarded by theAlumni Association in a single year.

Our deposits and financialinvestments are protected byFederal Deposit InsuranceCorporation (FDIC). All of ourinvestments are in short-termCertificates of Deposits varyingfrom seven to 12 months.

The federal governmentrecently took additional steps toincrease the protection from$100,000 to $250,000. Therefore, itis my recommendation that wecontinue banking with our currentfinancial institution.

There is an old Chinese saying that “Ajourney of a thousand miles begins with asingle step....” My journey began when Iwas first elected to the Alumni Associationboard of directors in 1998. During this jour-ney, I have had the wonderful privilege serv-ing you. It was wonderful watching ourorganization grow, struggle and change tomeet the needs of our membership.

Throughout my civic, community andprofessional career, I have set a personal termlimit in my service obligations. At the endof this year, I will have given the AlumniAssociation a total of 11 years of dedicatedservice.

Since 2004, I have been contemplatingtaking a less active role with the organiza-tion. However, following the sudden deathof our long-serving treasurer Terence L.Wong in 2005, I chose to fill the treasurer’srole and help stabilize our organization untilwe had recovered from losing Terry.

I leave knowing that we have built awonderful organization that is supportiveof our alma mater and is working to fulfillthe missions outlined in our organization’sbylaws. We have faced many challenges, andin the end, we have made the right deci-sions on behalf of our fellow alumni base.

A journey endsI am not disappearing entirely from

the scene. I will continue to mentor andassist new board members and board offic-ers in the future. I also plan on training ournew treasurer, whomever he or she may be.

We have accomplished much together, and we should all be proud of these achieve-ments:

•Fantastic CHSAA website•Annual golf tournament•Annual Memorial Day observance•Six years of HECB (Higher Educa-

tion Coordinating Board) matching schol-arship grants

•Scholarship Endowment Fund($25,000+ and growing)

•Scholarship awards (13 years running,for more than $60k)

•Strong treasury of $100k+ with solidinvestment plan (CD ladder)

•Great newsletters — continuous pub-lication for more than 12 years.

The most wonderful memories I haveare working together to accomplish so muchgood. Yes, we have had our differences, butthat says we are working together to solveissues.

This Eagle has finished soaring and isnow coming home to roost. I will watchyou from my perch.

My best to each of you and for whatyou do for our Alumni Association.
