  • 2May Day King And QueenBy Allyson Kwong 20and David Melzack 20

The May Day theme was Ka Mana`o, Ka `I`ini, a Me Ka Makia, which means The Thought, the Wish, the Purpose. This theme was to honor our Kupuna, who have helped us in many ways.

Auana and Kahiko hula dances were performed. Pomai Ogata 19, who was the May Day queen wore the crown flower because they were one of Lili`uokalanis favorite flowers. The crown flower connects to the song that Pomai danced, Kaulana Na Pua, a song written for Queen Lili`uokalani.

My friends, family, kumu, and all the people who supported me are my reasons for auditioning to be queen, says Pomai Ogata.

Pomai holds the honor of representing Punahou school in the May Day tradition. This was Pomais first year of being queen, but it was not her first year participating in May Day.

Pomai was also a princess representing Kaho`olawe in 6th grade, and a princess representing the island of Hawaii in 7th grade. Pomai spends a lot of her time on May Day, but she likes to do other things too.

There are many things that I like to do outside of May Day. Those things include Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Paddling, surfing, skateboarding, hiking, camping, piano, hula, going to the beach, and many other things. But most of all, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, stated Pomai.

Our middle school May Day king was Marist Liufau 19 who holds the honor of representing himself and his family during May Day. Marist was a King in a May Day program at his old school.

Participants rehearsed in the gym once a week to practice.

    continued on page 3

  • 3May Day King and Queen continued from page 2

Marist enjoys playing sports, and he trains regularly to become a better athlete. Sports are the biggest thing I do outside of May Day and I continue to try and use my time wisely as I am busy most times, states Marist.

The May Day king was chosen by the May Day queen. I wanted to be king because I was asked and I knew it would be a great experience leaving my middle school year, Marist says.

May Day is an important tradition because it honors our Hawaiian background. As a Punahou student, the opportunity to participate in this Punahou tradition is a treasured memory, states Pomai.

    Steroids Alex Grossman 20

Over 1,000,000 athletes have taken performance enhancing drugs, according to a study in 2014 by www.dea.gov.

Steroid use can be traced back to the 1930s. There are many different types of steroids. One of the most common is EPO. Many people think steroids are cool but they have many side effects

Historically, the synthetic testosterone helped men produce hormones for normal growth. In 1940s during the war it was discovered that the artificial testosterone could be used to gain weight and strengthen the soldier's performance. When the war was over. Athletes began to see how valuable this new thing could be. In 1956 Dr. Zeigler created a similar drug now know as anabolic steroids. Soon after Olympic athletes started using the new steroid. The Olympic committee of 1975 banned the use of all steroids in Olympic competitions. There are many types of side effects and risks when you take steroids. Some are unattractive like acne but also there are life threatening ones like liver and kidney disease. Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez were caught for using performance enhancing drugs. Lance Armstrong is an American former professional cyclist. He won the Tour de France a record seven consecutive times between 1999 and 2005 before being

disqualified from those races and banned from competitive cycling for life because of blood doping. If you even think about steroids remember the consequences that come with it.

    The Teen CarSky Shimabukuro 20

Car accidents are the number one cause in teen fatalities, according to www.cnn.com.

8% of car accidents are caused by teens who are usually driving while using their phone. In 2012 there were 2,823 teenage car accidents. This is why the new Chevy Malibu is in development.

This car is geared for teens. Parents can program a speed limit for the car and set boundaries on where the child can go. If they go too far then a text will be sent to their parents and the teen driver. The car can also inform parents where the teen is and how fast they are driving. The car keeps track of how many forward brake warnings it makes and how many forward avoidance brakes it does. The car keeps track of how far the teen has driven and has a stability control. It can also notify

parents if their teen has been racing, slamming on their brakes, or even when they get to school. Did you know most modern cars have a black box that records how the driver has been driving in case of an accident? This new technology will insure the safety of many amateur teens. Is this a smart idea or will it ruin my privacy? I think that this is a good idea because this car could save many lives.

If you dont want to have it you could choose not to. Alex Grossman says I think it will ruin your privacy. What if

youre doing something naughty and you dont want anybody to know? This decision should be up to the parents. Most parents would probably say yes because they love their kid and they want them to be safe.. I think that showing where you are is a little bit too much. The speed control is the most important part that will save the most lives. What do you think about this new technology?Sources:www.edgarsnyder.comwww.cnn.com/studentnews

  • 4What is Plagiarism? By Sky Shimabukuro 20

What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is stealing someone's words or ideas and using them as your own without citing it. It is pretty much just like stealing except with words or ideas.

One out of every three high school students plagiarize off the internet for their assignments. Plagiarizing has consequences that could change your life.

But students are not the only ones who plagiarize.

The Hunger Games is widely popular book by Suzanne Collins that sold 27.7 million copies according Publishers Weekly. Many fans of the Japanese book Battle Royale by Koushun Takami accused Collins of plagiarizing the plot of the book. In The Hunger Games, where teens are forced to fight each other controlled by an evil government. Battle Royale has a similar central plot. The teens have mentors, and the mentors in the two movies are very alike.

Vice President Joe Biden was forced to withdraw from the 1988 presidential election because of plagiarism, while attending Syracuse University, states New York Times.

Plagiarism comes with consequences according to www.ithenticate.com. Usually someone will have to pay the person they copied a certain fine. They may also be sued and the person they copied will get credit for whatever was copied. There are also legal

repercussions. A person who violates copyright laws can be sued and even serve a prison sentence. In middle school you may have to redo the assignment, your grade might be

lowered, you might fail the assignment or get no credit for the assignment.

Some schools have a zero tolerance policy for those who break the honor code. Plagiarism can lead to suspension or expulsion from school.

Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams were fined 7.3 million for plagiarism because Blurred Lines was to close to Got to Give up by Marvin Gaye.

CMS Middle students were asked what they knew about plagiarism.

Copying someone's ideas and stating it as your own. Yes, when I was little I would plagiarize because I didn't know what I was doing, Ally Kwong 20.

Tyler Sakamoto 20 comments, Plagiarism is copying what someone has said without giving credit.I've probably plagiarized before, but not intentionally.

The best way to figure out if you are plagiarizing work is to ask yourself, Did I come up with this original idea, or did I base this on someone elses work?

If you answered the latter, then you need to cite your work, otherwise, you are most definitely plagiarizing.

3 Books All Middle Schoolers Must ReadBy Leila Loose 20

These 3 books are usually categorized as adult stories, but I believe every middle schooler should read them all. They are exceptional books and should keep you intrigued. You will be glad you

    read them.

Animal Farm by George Orwell- This book may sound like a children's story, but it is written in a way that appeals to all ages. In the story, the pigs, horses, cows, and all farm animals on the Manor farm take over and drive the humans out. They then proceed to run the farm in a diplomatic society, but you must read it to find out

    what problems theyll face.

Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway- Even as a more adult book, this novel is a must-read for advanced readers. Especially for seventh graders, to follow up on the Resiliency advisory unit. In the fictional story, an old Cuban fisherman must catch a fish in order to survive. When he finally catches a marlin, he faces three days fighting the fish as it pulls his boat out to sea. The man never gives up which makes this story a work of resilience.

Men Who Stare at Goats by Ron Ronson- This novel tells the true story of a secret unit in the U.S. army that attempts to make their soldiers walk through walls, become invisible, and even stop a goats heart with nothing but their minds. These stories of super humans get a great laugh from all readers and starts out with a bang, or maybe a smack.

Youtube is Becoming a Career OptionBy Leila Loose 20

Everyone has been on YouTube at least occasionally, whether its just to find out more information on a school project or possibly obsessively watching every one of your favorite YouTubers videos. The point is, YouTube is a big part of everyones life. For some people, it is their life. These people have made YouTube their career, like Lilly Singh, Jenna Marbles, or Ryan Higa.

The amazing thing about YouTube is that anyone can make it their career, you dont need to get a job interview or compete with people for a position to become a YouTuber. All you need to do is make a YouTube account and upload a video and you can consider yourself a YouTuber.

Most people dont think its possible to make money on YouTube. Some people almost believe that getting money on

YouTube is reserved for a special group of people. But its not. Anyone can make money on YouTube.

You cant just upload a video and expect to get money though. You have to make sure ads are before, during, or in the middle of your videos. The amount of money you get is determined by the number of people that view your ads, and you get even more money if someone clicks on the ad. Now you know to do your favorite youtubers a favor and click on the ads before their videos!

If you want to have a career on YouTube, the first thing to do is make a video worth watching. Then, hope it gets viral.

But you should always make sure you have a career back up plan.

  • 6What is Easter Truly About?Ally Kwong 20

Easter Sunday is a great holiday to relax and have fun with family and friends. Although we know Easter as the holiday with candy and eggs, that is not what it is really about.

Easter originated from the resurrection of Christ, states History.com. Easter is supposed to be the most important holiday in the Christian religion. Some sources say the Easter comes from Eostre. Eostre is the Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility.

Others say that Easter is the Latin term Hebdomada, or White Week. This represents the people who donned white clothing for being baptized. This holiday is one of the holiest holidays in the year.

Over many years, Easter has evolved. We now commercialize this holiday in order to sell candy, decorations, dyes, and more, states History.com.

The tradition of colorful eggs originated from Poland or the Ukraine, according to FactMonster. com. They would usually paint their

eggs silver or gold, using wax to decorate it. A bunny or hare symbolized fertility, that is why we have an Easter Bunny.

Many traditions were formed around Easter eggs. Persians, Ancient Egyptians, and Romans used eggs during spring festivals. Eggs are a symbol of new life, confirms History.com. Easter egg hunts and egg rolls still live on to this day, according Fact Monster. com.

    Online SchoolingBy Emma Zheng 20

What is online schooling? According to Google Dictionary, they are virtual schools that have been integrated into public schools. Its a place where students sit in computer labs and do their work online. In other situations, students can be completely home-schooled, or they can take any combination of public/private/home-schooling and online classes. Studies have shown that homeschooled students repeatedly outperform their schooled peers on standardized

tests, regardless of a parent's level of formal education.

Online course can give the student the opportunity to plan their own study time for the day rather than the other way around. Student can study whenever is their peak energy, either earlier or later in the day. They can always attend by participating on discussion boards or in chat sessions, turn in their work on time, and watch lectures or read materials. Online schooling provides a more comfortable learning environment, according to Open Education database (OBED). Students wont have to fight traffic, wake up early to go to class, or miss important family time. Cafi Cohen -- author of And What About College? How Homeschooling Leads to Admission to the Best Colleges and Universities, spent two full days observing public school classes. During those days, she kept track of administrative time versus on-task time. On-task time is roughly defined as students really doing something - reading, writing, listening to lectures, etc. Cohen discovered that less than one hour out of each six-hour school day was spent on-task. The main part of the day was spent on administrative duties: taking attendance, collecting homework and reports, making announcements, passing out supplies, preparing for activities, cleaning up, and discipline - perhaps the biggest time-waster of all. • 7The Courier interviewed the Class of 2019 about their middle school memories and what they are looking forward to in the Academy. Congratulations to the Class of 2019 and best of luck in the Academy.

My favorite 8th grade event would probably have to be going to CampI will miss being able to easily meet with everyone and having (mostly) the same schedules as other peopleI look forward to learning so much more in the academy and all of the new paths that are opened for us during school and outside of school!Kai DurkinI think the one thing I'll miss most about middle school is the team spaces. You get to see the same people for school the year and get to know them. In the Academy, you probably won't be able to see your friends as often.I will be looking forward to the wide range of classes offered. You can join a class to try something new or to get better at something you do.Nyah Manuel

My favorite 8th grade event was probably the camp. Being able to spend three days with your friends from your teamspace was really fun. I think I'll miss the small, compact schedule and teamspace. Everything in middle school was isolated and very small. The communities were small and everyone got to know each other relatively quickly. Also, the area isn't as daunting and teeming with choices as the academy. I'll also miss the linear schedules too. I liked having a precise, accurate, and established schedule. Honestly... I'm not sure what to look forward to. I am looking forward to the extra time but I already know that I'm gonna spend my breaks working on homework rather than hanging out with my friends and such. I can also look forward to new classes... But I'm pretty sure that new classes bring along also new grades and pressure to stay on top of everything and submit quality work.Aaron Kakazu

My favorite 8th event was going to camp Mokule'ia. Some of the things that I will miss about middle school are the great staff that have always supported me and helped me to keep moving forward during my school year. Thanks to them so much.I am looking forward to the academy buffet!Falcon Kaumatule

I think that I will miss the middle school community the most because, here I feel very protected and there is always people looking out for you. I will also miss having a supervisor, because I feel like Dr. Komori always helped me with my problems. And lastly, I will miss lunch because in middle school there is a set time period for lunch, which is usually a time when I get to see all my friends at the same time, but next year, it will be harder to get together for lunch and see each other more, because of the schedules. In academy, I am looking forward to the freedom, because I feel that it can challenge me and make me more responsible. And as part of freedom, I like that we can do what we want with our breaks and it can give me more time to work on homework.Julia Kuba

My favorite 8th grade event would probably be the two night stay at camp Mokuleia, because it allowed me to really bond with my peers while learning and having fun at the beach. I also extremelyloved the activities we had their like flashlight tag and other night activities. Some things I will miss about middle school would probably be team space setups, since they are a great place to stay in and listen to announcements. In the Academy, I will be definitely be looking forward to the freedom of roaming around in academy, as well as the new class room setups rather than having them close together in one building.Preston Ku

Benefits of Sleep1) One benefit of sleeping is lowering your chances for heart diseases but that takes years to develop with lack of sleep. But according to one website, a shift in your sleeping patterns can give you blood glucose levels which is a sign of pre-diabetic.

    2) Less pain is the second benefit of sleep. Sleep wont stop you from getting hurt but it can help you recover. Getting sleep has shown to (in some cases) supplement medicine for pain.

    3) Improving your memory is the third benefit of sleeping. During your sleep you can strengthen your memory. When you sleep, you review what you have done when you were awake. This will help you learn faster whether it is mental or physical.

    4) The fourth benefit is creativity. Next time you are having writers block or cant think of anything to draw just sleep on it. When you sleep the brain seems to reorganize your memories then put them back together, which could be the result of creativity.

    5) Being happier is another benefit of sleep. Getting a poor amount of sleep is shown to ruin your day. You're more likely to be cranky or snappy to people when youre not getting enough sleep.

Get Some Sleep-Its Good For YouBy David Melzack 20

Nine and a half hours is the amount of time suggested for a teenager to sleep. But how many teenagers actually get the required amount of sleep? The Courier interviewed students about their sleeping habits. Tyler Sakamoto 19 said "Um I go to sleep around 11 on school nights. I like going to sleep late at night when I'm binge watching YouTube but then I hate it in the morning when I'm really sleepy because I didn't get enough sleep." I usually get about seven hours of sleep on school nights. Most school nights I go to sleep at 10:30, and wake up in the morning at 5:30. I dont think I get enough sleep because Im tired during the day, says Jamie Shimamoto 19.

I usually always sleep within the range of 9 and 10 oclock and wake up at 6 during school nights. I make-up sleep over the weekends, usually going to bed at 8 or 9 and waking up at 7 a.m, comments Sydnie Maiava 19.

I normally get around 8 hours of sleep, it seems like a lot, but often times during the day I get very tired, states Misha Tasaka 19. When you dont get enough sleep you cant focus right, can lead to other diseases and an even age your skin faster. Your mind is not as sharp when its not fully rested. Your attention span becomes small too. Not sleeping for the full nine hours can also lead to heart disease, stroke, heart failure and even diabetes according to www.web.md. Lack of sleep causes your body to release hormonal stress, which breaks down skin collagen. Collagen is the layers of skin on your body. So the next time you have a choice between Netflix and sleep...choose sleep.

Most Personal Device Yet: Apples WatchBy Charles Yung 20 and Kauai Paule 20

Apple has just ventured into the world of wearable technology with

its new Apple Watch. Other companies such as Samsung, Motorola, and Fitbit have made smart watches up for purchase beforehand. Smart watches have been made to be like a hybrid between a phone and a watch. The Apple Watch enables the user to play games and download apps, for example.

The Apple Watch, dubbed as Apples most personal device yet, has a price range from $349 to $17,000. There are many features of the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch is similar to a smartphone. It currently has over 3500 apps available. There are 3 types of the Apple Watch, with many colors and band styles. There are many technological features of the Apple Watch. One such feature is Apple Pay. Apple Pay enables the owner of the watch to make payments from the wrist. You also can call, mail, and send messages. If your friend

has an Apple Watch, you can send digital drawings or your heartbeat to the person. However, for you to make calls and send messages, you need your watch to be connected with your phone. Apple Watch also comes with your faithful helper, Siri. Another feature of the Apple Watch is that it monitors all the ways you move. Therefore, the Apple Watch is very comprehensive and is like a phone, fitness monitor, and credit card.

The Apple Watch Sport is the most affordable version. The price is from $349-$399. The watch bands

come in 5 different colors. There are two different screen sizes for the Sport version. The smaller screen size is supposed to fit smaller wrists, and the larger screen size is meant to fit larger wrists. The material used to make the screen is aluminum and glass.

The second version, the Apple Watch, has a price range $549 to $1099. Here, the watch bands have different

colors and textures. Some of these band options include the same silicone used in the Sport version, the metal links, or the leather band. The reason why this version is more expensive is because the material used to make the screen display is stainless steel.

Finally, the Apple Watch Edition is the luxury version. The price range is from $10,000-$17,000. This watch is so expensive, mainly because that the screen display is made from sapphire crystal glass, and 18 karat gold. The gold in the watch is either 18 karat rose gold or yellow gold.

One Year Space MissionBy Tyler Sakamoto 20

On March 27, 2015, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko left Earth to spend a year in the International Space Station, which is double the standard length of astronauts in space stations. They plan to gather a lot of data about the human body after being in space for such a long time.

The main goal behind the mission is to find how the body of the astronauts will be after the effects of being in space for a year. Data is going to be collected for seven different categories. They will be tested on how well they can perform functional tasks, the psychological effects, and their immune system, and a few more.

Many say that this is a big step for our country. Not only are we collaborating with another country, which many hope with lead to a global partnership, but the mission also provides research that is needed to understand how the human body functions in space.

NASA says that this is an important stepping stone in their goal towards a mission for Mars. This mission can provide research valuable to scientists to prepare for this mission.

Kornienko and I are only one data point in this goal to have people live and work in space for longer periods, with the hopes of someday perhaps going to Mars, commented Kelly.

In almost an year, Kelly and Kornienko will be heading back to Earth, with lots of data for scientists to analyze about the effects of human body after being in space for longer amounts of time, and possibly get closer to the goal of getting to Mars.

Why is Diet Soda Bad for You?By Emma Zheng 20

How many people do you think have lost weight from drinking diet soda rather than regular soda? According to Authority Nutrition, probably not many. That is because if you choose to have a healthier lifestyle by drinking diet coke, its absolutely useless. The only difference between them is that the regular one is sweetened with ordinary natural sugar while diet soda is sweetened with a another type of artificial sweetener commonly aspartame. Some other sweeteners may be Splenda, saccharin, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium, giving the drink fewer calories.

One reason why diet soda is bad for you is it confuses your body. Artificial sweeteners have a much more intense flavor than regular sugar, so over time products like diet soda dull our senses to naturally sweet foods like fruit, says Dr. Brooke Alpert, author of The Sugar Detox in an interview with Fox News. What is even more troubling is that some studies have shown that the sugar stand-ins have been shown to have the same effect on your body as regular sugar. Another theory for why diet soda is bad for your body is, it may throw off your metabolism. When you drink diet coke, your body starts to release hormones to begin processing the sugar. But if you continue on a habit of consuming artificial sugar, your body may become confused and not respond the same as to regular sugar. So researchers think that this change in hormone levels could contribute to increases in how much we eat, says Susan Swithers, professor and researcher in Behavioral Neuroscience.

Diet soda may be calorie free, but it wont necessarily help you lose any weight. Researchers from the University of Texas found that over the course of about a decade, diet soda drinkers had a 70 percent greater increase in waist circumference compared with non-drinkers. But the crazy thing was, participants who slurped down two or more sodas a day experienced a 500 percent greater increase. Researchers found that diet soda and artificial sweeteners trick the body into thinking that it is consuming real food and sugar even though it isnt, which can lead to overconsumption.

    Vestibulum ante:

    Why you SHOUDNT

Case Middle School is saying goodbye to three amazing teachers who have collectively taught more than 100 years at Punahou.

Mr. Vic Copeland has been working at Punahou for 43 years. He has taught math and science to over 2,500 students from the 4th through 6th grade.

In one word...Congenial, Reliable, Enthusiastic, GenuineWhat will you miss most about Mr. Copeland? His willingness to invest so much of himself to ensure that kids have a positive experience. Coordinating lunchtime volleyball and ping pong tournaments likely consumed more time than anyone knows, and he did it all with a smile.-Mr. KoshibaHis good sense about what is a balanced life for children. They need respect, humor and a sense of fairness in competition. -Mr. TamI'll miss Vic's smile and unwavering positive attitude. I know I can count on Vic to see the bright side of any situation and to always be laughing with his colleagues and students. He takes on extra challenges and work (lunchtime volleyball) with grace and gratitude. He loves his job, his students, his coworkers, his family and everyone in between. I'll miss his sincere kindness and the constant support that he's always willing to hand out.-Ms. EisoldVic is the ultimate "Game Master." No teacher can create and organize a game for 6th graders the way he can.-Mr. Eliashof

What lesson have you learned from Mr. Copeland? Its not important to win. (Although to try to win is very important) As a teacher we have the unique opportunity to teach this to children. -Mr. Tam

I learned from Vic that working at a school means doing whatever it takes to support the students from being the best classroom teacher you can be to helping keep the grounds clean.-Mr. Koshiba

I learned that exposing yourself to everything helps. I used to think that some of Mr. Copelands hobbies were meaningless but after trying them out, I got to experience

it and it was actually fun to try out new things. Although it was seemingly pointless at rst, it was fun to try new things.-Aaron Kakazu 19

What is a special memory you have of Mr. Copeland? He dressed up as Harris with overalls and a bandana hanging from hi pocket. He was absolutely focused on Harris Fest.-Mr. TamWhen I was in 4th grade, he was the cool teacher. Legend has it that he built this huge volcano in the middle of his classroom that actually erupted. -Mr. KoshibaVic made our Harris Fest a real joy by creating fabulous barnyard games for the children to play. He got out there in his overalls and straw hat and ran the showAlso he taught me how to play cribbage and if I am lucky i will inherit a few boards so that I can start teaching my class to play.-Mrs. Robles

Mrs. Kai Nelson 67 has been working at Punahou since 1991. She is passionate about history, culture and literature.

In one word...PassionateDedicated virtuous humble thoughtful KindWhat will you miss most about Mrs. Nelson?I will miss Mrs. Nelsons lessons. She always made us look at question from a different perspective.J-Rod Nelson 19

I have shared a breakout room with Kai for 6/7th of my Punahou teaching career. As my teaching partner, she has encouraged, inspired, listened ... I admire her high standards and kindness. I will just miss her.Ms. Lyons

Ill miss her passion for the subject and determination to teach each and every one of us-Melia Waring 19

What lesson have you learned from Mrs. Nelson?I learned from Kai to be more thoughtful. She is always thinking of others first.-Mr. SalgadoMrs. Nelson taught me so many things. The lesson that stands out the most was facing adversity. Mrs. Nelson always encouraged us to be the best we could be and to never give up no matter the challenge.-J-Rod Nelson 19

I learned how hard work pays offShe always fits as much as she can into every class. Even though it feels a bit stressful sometimes, I learn more in that time than any other english teacher taught me.-Melia Waring 19

Choose high standards .... don't ask anything of anyone else that you aren't willing to examine in yourself. Reading that, it sounds very severe and cold. That is the opposite of Kai's approach ... but what I mean is Kai expects and requires her students to work hard; however, she is the hardest working teacher. She constantly asks questions and considers every possibility ... that is a lesson that I will always work on.-Ms. Lyons

What is a special memory you have of Mrs. Nelson? I will always remember Mrs. Nelson for her amazing style of teaching. The countless hours spent on papers and memorizing passages was worth it. The large workload was difficult but the lessons from the work was stuck in my brain. I enjoyed being apart of Mrs. Nelson english class.-J-Rod Nelson

Kai is such a great sport. While she is exacting in her expectations of students, and rigorous in her teaching .... she is a bit of a goofball, and I love it. Every Halloween she dresses up. Have you seen the "Biker Chick" or "Piratess" -- I have literally done a double take walking past her classroom on Halloween. She also has a fantastic laugh and a great sense of humor.-Ms. Lyons

Coach Ken has been at Punahou since 1973. He has taught 5th grade math and science, then middle school boys PE. he is famous for his green smoothies.

    In one word...talented generous ConsummateRenaissanceMan

Positive Special inspiringWhat will you miss most about Coach Ken?You know that adage that people will remember most how you make them feel? That's Ken. I always feel like I have the potential to be an Olympic Athlete (despite my preference of COFFEE drinks over Green smoothies, or my complete clutziness ...)-Ms. Lyons

What lesson have you learned from Coach Ken?How to reinvent yourself as a coach and teacher, to better educate and train your student athlete! Also how to be resilient when adversity comes your way!-Mr. Lum, 2nd Grade TeacherAthletes make great polo players, not just fast swimmers.-Mr. Young-Kingsbury

I learned from Ken not to stress so much. -Mr. Salgado

While Ken is master of much, I think I am inspired to embrace the desire I have to be "tryer of much, and work on mastery of some..." because I am inspired by the peace he obviously finds in pursing his passions. When I am

eligible for sabbatical, I think I just want to follow Coach Ken around for a month while he works on all his projects! I swear I learn something new about him every time we chat!-Ms. Lyons

One lesson I learned from coach Ken is to get comfortable being uncomfortable. What this means is to be ok with getting out of your comfort zone and do something difficult or challenging to get better at whatever you are doing.Noah Weldon 19

What is a special memory you have of Coach Ken? A special memory I have of Kai and Ken is when we all dressed up as the Punahou Globetrotters for Halloween two years ago. We all had so much fun performing our basketball routine in front of the kids together.-Mr. Salgado
