of cervical cancer cases in this countrycould be prevented by the human papillo-mavirus (HPV) vaccination. Three dosesof HPV vaccine are recommended forgirls and boys at 11-12 years of age, butthe vaccine can be given up through age26.

The HPV vaccine is safe, effective andproduces better immunity when given atthe recommended age. However, as ofOctober 2013, only 30.1 percent offemales and 7.5 percent of males ages 13to 17 had received the entire three-dosevaccine series, according to MichiganCare Improvement Registry data.A simple, affordable and easy-to-admin-

ister screening test for cervical cancerhas been widely available for 70 years.Still, more than half of cervical cancerdeaths are seen in women who haveeither never had a Pap test, or have nothad testing in more than five years.Along with a lack of screening, the mostsignificant risk factor for cervical canceris infection by the HPV. In fact, 99 per-cent of cervical cancers are caused byHPV.

Screening for cervical cancer is recom-mended to begin at age 21. Under theAffordable Care Act (ACA), women’s pre-ventative care — such as mammograms, screenings for cervical cancer, prenatalcare, immunizations and other services— is covered.

Vaccines for Children (VFC), Medicaid,MI-Child and most health insurances payfor HPV vaccine. If your child does not have health insur-

ance, or does not have insurance thatcovers these vaccines, ask your healthcare provider or local health departmentabout the VCF program, which providesno-or-low cost vaccines to eligible chil-dren ages 18 and younger.

I wanted a kayak. It was a simple request Irepeated repeatedly. I talked about how wewould go kayaking this summer on the lake. We’d have a blast making family memorieswhile building our triceps and getting a tan. Icommunicated as clearly as I could, inEnglish, which is the language they speak. Iwanted a kayak.

They got me a blender. There was a reason for their actions. They

like smoothies. And, despite the allure of asleek kayak cutting through the cool, clearwater, it was a distant vision. In my climatezone, you can’t kayak in the winter. You haveto wait until summer. Smoothies are availableall times of the year – for those with themachinery to make them. Months of waitingfor warm weather or immediate gratification:the choice was obvious.

To their credit, they didn’t get me any ordi-nary blender. They purchased one with amotor capable of powering a rocket to themoon. This thing doesn’t blend food. It pul-verizes cells; turns them inside out and super-charges the nutritional value like no blenderever dreamt of doing. Well, that, and it makessmoothies.

I appreciated my supersonic blender, I reallydid. But you know how it is with some giftsthat aren’t kayaks. They sit in the living roomfor one week, then two, until we sort ofbecome oblivious to their being there at all.

My boys were dying to make smoothies, ofcourse, but they didn’t dare remove my mega-tron blender from its packaging. They left thatprivilege to me. They can be surprisingly con-siderate to the needs of others in the mostunexpected ways sometimes.

The box sat unopened because (it wasn’t akayak) and I’ve never been much of a smooth-ie kind of gal. I like a little crunch in my food. But, somewhere between weeks two andthree, I got tired of stepping over my non-kayak, missile blender and carried the bad boyinto the kitchen.

My kids reacted with a one-word exclama-tion: “Smoothies!”We revved up our rocket and shot out frozen,

ice cream laden, calorie-laden smoothies likenobody’s business. The kids were happy. Itook a look at the literature in the box, whichoffered healthy smoothie recipes containing asmall amount of fruits accompanied by lots ofvegetables only a guy like Popeye could love.

Call me crazy, but I decided to give it a try.

I threw in leafy greens by the handful andadded minimal fruit and water. I hit the switchand watched the cyclonic action take my normalfood and transform it into a nutrition explosion.I poured the mixture into a glass and was wor-ried. Then I took a taste.

It wasn’t half bad. Surprisingly good, in fact. Ididn’t mind drinking it one bit and have blend-ed similar concoctions every day since. I’mhaving a blast while becoming the epitome ofhealth. (Or so I like to think.)My birthday is approaching and because of the

thoughtful gift of the atomic blender, I’m look-ing forward to being in better shape this yearthan last. There’s just one birthday gift I canthink of that might further enhance my newdietary routine: a method of exercise. Youknow, like the kind you can get with a kayak.

Quite remarkable. At Saturday’s Chamber of Commerce gath-ering, Dee Mulligan informed the crowd about several of CassCity’s finest achievements. One that stuck out in my mind ishow our local community has rallied around Pinktober.

Since its conception 3 years ago, Cass City has donated over$17,000 to the American Cancer society, including a whopping$10,000 in 2014.

Editor,

Wouldn’t it be nice ifRight to Life (RTL) wasreally about — LIFE?Sadly, the truth is thatRTL is all about power. The power to tell womenthey have no right tochoose what is best forthemselves. The power totell women someone elseknows best regarding theirhealth care and reproduc-tive issues. It’s an age-old“women can’t” storyparading as RTL.

If this group has theirway, women who getpregnant will stay preg-nant, period.Circumstances, family sit-uations, age — no matter. They know what’s best —trust them. And thewomen in RTL? They arethe same types of womenwho opposed women’sright to vote, play sportsin school, and the EqualRights Amendment, etc. These women “stand bytheir man” and not ontheir own.

If RTL was about life, their organization wouldbe leaders in promoting

comprehensive reproduc-tion education every-where. Their legislativeallies would support freeand accessible health care, daycare and early child-hood education programs.

If RTL was about LIFE,they would demand con-tinuing education andtechnical training jobs pro-grams. Their legislativeallies would demand a“living wage”, and easerestrictive adoption redtape. If RTL was aboutLIFE, they would not sup-port candidates who talk“sanctity of life”, then actto cut food stamps, unem-ployment, Head Start, andchild health programs.

But, RTL is NOT aboutLIFE. They are aboutpower. The power to tellwomen they have nopower — someone elseknows what’s best forthem.Haven’t women been told

this old, sad story longenough?

Thanks,

Jack AdamsDeford

I considered writing about Justin Bieber this week, for lack ofa better topic during what feels like a never-ending winter herein the Thumb, but at the last minute I happened upon somethingmuch more interesting: bovine flatulence. In fact, this idea just might solve Michigan’s reported shortage

of heating fuel. Well, as long as propane can be substituted withmethane. I couldn’t say if that would be more economical oreven possible — I’m a reporter, not a scientist.

Let me explain. The Associated Press last week published a story out of Berlin,

Germany, where it seems a herd of dairy cows nearly lifted theroof off their barn when methane released by the bovinescaused an explosion.

Yes, this was a real story.Anyway, the authorities reported that a static electricity charge

apparently triggered the detonation, and a spurt of flame, on aMonday at a farm in Rasdorf, which is located in centralGermany. The roof was slightly damaged and one cow sufferedminor burns. No people were hurt, according to the story.

“Police say 90 cows are kept in the shed and it wasn’t clearwhy quantities of methane had built up,” the story stated.“Bovine belching and flatulence releases large quantities of thegas.”

I’m thinking that last sentence goes without saying. But only90 cows? Geez, we’ve got that beat in the Thumb (and thensome) at several dairy farms. Seems like all that gas could beput to good use. Maybe we could even lure another majorprocessor to Cass City — one with the ability to manufacturemethane into some sort of fuel that could be utilized in fur-naces?

Okay, so the story is silly. But after several weeks of no sun, arctic cold and enough snow to carve out a life-sized sculptureof Florida, it made me laugh on a gray Thursday afternoon.

That’s more than I can say about my reaction to the blitz ofmedia reports about a certain 19-year-old Canadian who maynot be forced to grow up until the crowds of teeny boppers andhis money are finally gone.

Yup, this story has a much happier ending.

Thumb National Bank officials lastweek announced that the communityraised nearly $17,000 in contribu-tions for the annual “Giving Tree”program in December.

Serving 87 local families and 226kids, each child received an averageof $75 in gifts from this year’sGiving Tree effort.

Thumb National Bank has beenhelping local children and their fam-

ilies through this program for morethan 20 years.

This year as the program grew andthe needs of local families becamegreater, Thumb National partneredwith Scheurer Health Care Networkand Agri-Valley Communications tohelp meet all the needs.

“Between our three companies, wewere able to provide local familiesand their children a special holidaythanks to the generosity of our com-munities,” said Thumb NationalBank Chief Executive Officer JayDubey. “By placing a ‘Giving Tree’at each of our businesses, with abrief card explaining the family inneed, we were able to get communi-ty support in the ‘Giving Tree’effort.”

Staff at Scheurer Health CareNetwork, Agri-ValleyCommunications and ThumbNational Bank worked together toidentify the families in need, andregister each family regarding spe-cific information on the children ineach household. These individualfamily cards were then organizedand hung on the ‘Giving Trees’,which were located at all three busi-ness locations.

With a ‘Giving Tree’ in each busi-ness lobby, respective employees, customers and community folkscould take a card, purchase gifts andreturn the gifts to Thumb NationalBank for distribution to the familiesand children in need. Because of thelarge number of gifts this year, all the

gifts were transported to theScheurer Professional Center wherethe families could more easily pickup their gifts.

“Without this program many kidswould have to do without aChristmas or at the least have a veryminimal Christmas,” Dubey added.“As the economy continued taking ahit, the need kept growing. We can-not say a big enough ‘thank you’ tothe people that help to make this asuccess every year, especially thosethat take a card and shop for the kids, and our generous staff for the time, care and commitment they make tomaking this a special event in ourBank and our community.”

A Tuscola County man’s staterecord white perch, caught back in2002 in Lake Huron, was bumpedfrom the top spot last week in west-ern Michigan.

Michigan Department of NaturalResources (DNR) officials con-firmed a white perch landed Tuesdayby Aaron Slagh of Holland is thestate’s new record at 1.93 poundsand 13.25 inches in length. Slaghwas ice fishing with a spoon onMuskegon Lake in MuskegonCounty when he landed the lunker.

CASS CITY VFW Post 3644 Post Commander Joe Merchant recently hon-

ored two Cass City students whose essays placed in competitions sponsored

locally by the Cass City VFW post. Above, Jared Blattner, seventh grade,

placed third overall in the Patriot’s Pen contest in the 10th District (Thumb

area), while senior Anna Bagnall finished fifth in the Voice of Democracy

Essay Contest.

The previous state record wascaught in Lake Huron by Kyle Ryanof Reese July 13, 2002, weighing inat 1.88 pounds and measuring 13.25inches in length.

Slagh’s perch is the second newstate record reported in January.

DNR officials verified a new staterecord flathead catfish Monday, Jan.13, in Cass County.

The catfish was caught by DaleBlakely of Niles, who was fishingfor crappies on Barron Lake when hehooked into a monster 52 pound flat-head that measured more than 46inches in length.

The previous record was caught inthe spring of 2012 on the St. JosephRiver in Berrien County andweighed in at a hefty 49.8 pounds.Prior to that, the record hadn’t beenbroken since 1943.

State records are recognized byweight only. To qualify for a staterecord, fish must exceed the currentlisted state-record weight, and mustbe verified by a DNR fisheries biol-ogist.

“This winter, despite the extremeweather most of Michigan has beenexperiencing, is shaping up to be agreat time for many anglers,” saidDNR Fisheries Division Chief JimDexter. “This latest state recordagain showcases the quality of thestate’s fisheries.”

“Things didn’t go our way tonight.Akron-Fairgrove shot the 3-ball real-ly well,” said Hollocker.

Brett Morrish recorded 20 points to

top Owen-Gage, while Ben Goodchipped in 15 points and 18rebounds.
