We have a ton of events coming up so please get in the mood for summer fun with your fellow boat club members.

OUR CLUBHOUSE SURVIVED IRMA UNSCATHED!

COME ENJOY FALL AT OUR CLUBHOUSE!

At long last, cooler weather is upon us. Many Florida residents view the Fall season as having the best weather of the year, although we still have nearly two months left in hurricane season. Attendees at recent events at our clubhouse, including the Gratitude Party on September 22 and several events during this past weekend relating to the Dunedin Cup, were treated to wonderful weather and sunsets. In addition, the efforts of many members at the Work Day on September 23 add to the beauty of the clubhouse.

The 33rd Annual Dunedin Cup, a Gulf Series Boat of the Year Event, which benefits the Dunedin Youth Sailing Association, was a great success. Nine boats competed in the Gulf Race in Clearwater. Although it appeared that the weather during the first race would force that race to be shortened, and, perhaps, eliminate the second, both races were completed. On Dunedin Causeway, more than 100 boats in several classes competed on both Saturday and Sunday. Sunday was simply fantastic, because of the weather and the enthusiasm and energy of the young sailors.

We have a ton of events coming up so please get in the mood for summer fun with your fellow boat club members.

There are so many people to thank, both members of our club and of the Dunedin Youth Sailing Association, who took part in the event, from managing the logistics of the boats on Dunedin Causeway, to serving as a mark boat or a committee boat for the races in the Gulf and on the causeway, to coaching the young sailors, and organizing the food and beverage events at our clubhouse and on the causeway. There are simply too many to name here; however, I wish to recognize our Life Member, Carol Elwood, chair of the Race Committee, for her tremendous efforts in planning the Gulf Race and implementing it. Carol has posted results of the race in her race report in this newsletter, along with her commentary regarding the Dunedin Cup, including her thanks to many people. In addition, make sure that you view the many beautiful photos on our club’s website and facebook page that were taken during the Dunedin Cup, both at the Gulf Race and on the causeway. Remember, the Dunedin Cup Regatta Ball and Auction will be held at 6 p.m. at the Bon Appetit restaurant on Friday, October 13. Visit dunedincupregatta.org for information regarding this great event which helps support the Dunedin Youth Sailing Assocation, and to purchase tickets.

Also, mark your calendars for these upcoming events: 1) On Monday, October 16, at 6 p.m., there will be a dinner at our clubhouse, just prior to the General Meeting at 7:30 p.m. and 2) On Saturday, November 18, at 6 p.m., the Chili Cook-off will be held at our clubhouse. As always, I encourage you to visit our website frequently to obtain the latest information regarding our club’s activities and to attend as many meetings and events as you can. I hope to see you soon.

What can I say except thanks to everybody who helped make the Dunedin Cup Regatta a day of smooth sailing? Some people had boats with problems yet others stepped up at the last minute, mice ate holes in marks, boats wouldn't start but somehow we got it done. A big thank you to Rod Collman, Committe Boat, Sam McVicker, Mark Boat and Sandy Cowling, Pin Boat for the use of their boats, and to George Schott who transitioned from the bay races to the Gulf in order to run Sandy's boat, our Commodore Blair who at the last minute came up with the use of Sandy's boat in order to have a Pin Boat and found someone to run it, Randy and Rebecca Morgan and Chris Gattas who helped on Sam's boat. The races were great Boat of the Year races due to the professionalism of our PRO Fairlie Brinkley who was most ably joined by Paula and Ken Shur. Tom Kennedy ending up having an emergency appendectomy the Friday before the regatta and Dave Kelly stepped in to tie up all the loose ends. Steve Sosa took some great pics in the bay of the Sunfish fleet.

Waiting for the wind to pick up before the first race of the Dunedin Cup

Gulf RacesThe first race started in light air having the race committee anxiously deciding whether they needed to shorten the course but wisely

let us do the entire course within the time limit. A refreshing breeze picked up for the second race.Somehow, Dennis Bosi, despite the fact that he had two teenage girls dreamily sun bathing on the deck and was at the back of the pack, ended up first overall in his division on corrected time. Who gave him that rating any way???Here are the results:
