Dear LHS staff,
Please find some updates on the LHS redesign and Accreditation. Next week I will release the SY 17-18 calendar, and will provide specific information on the LHS campus facilities plan and upcoming summer moves – the last of the LHS redesign process. I hope you enjoy your well-deserved weekend!
LHS Pathway Design Team UpdatesThe members of the Pathway Design Teams (PDT) have begun exploring ways for LHS students to gain more academic and real life experiences in the five career pathways. Specifically, the PDTs are working to design feeder courses, exploratory tools and interdisciplinary investigations in order to provide students with a solid foundation for their college and career choices.
Over the course of the next two months, Design Team Members will work with students and industry professionals to recommend future elective course offerings and sequencing which will provide our students with a solid foundation of knowledge and experience in one of the pathway areas. One important aspect of the teams’ work is to expand opportunities for our students o meet and learn from industry professionals. The team will also create capstone projects that will provide students with the chance to display their learning to an authentic audience.
While the teams’ work is focused on the Upper School for the new school year, they are also thinking about how to introduce and support these pathways in the 9th and 10th grade. The teams will present their preliminary ideas to a panel on May 11th from 3:00 to 4:15. They will present their final products in June. Preparing for the Shifts
As you know, we have been working with TLA (Teaching and Learning Alliance) this year to grow in our understanding of the Common Core standards. In particular, we have focused on the shifts required in our instruction in order to meet the high expectations of Common Core. Teachers across campus have worked individually with our TLA consultants (Kelley and Chris) or participated in group trainings and PDs. In February, teachers and coaches from the Curriculum Review teams began to

work with Kelley and Chris in order to become Lead Learners. Many of these teachers will attend the Summer Standards Institute as well as targeted PD here on campus. The goal is to build a strong community of teachers on staff who can support our continued growth in Common Core and to provide support and guidance to all teachers this fall and beyond. More details about this group’s work and additional opportunities for other staff will be shared in the coming weeks.

ACOSTA THROWS NO-HITTER
On Monday, April 24, Lancer Baseball brought home a big win over Tewksbury. Pitcher Abel Acosta kept the batters in check and delivered a no hitter. Leo Romero helped bring the final score to 6-0 with his two run homer.
MAYOR RIVERA PRESENTS GEAR UP SCHOLARSHIP!
Gear UP set a goal this year of 100% participation from the Senior class to complete their FAFSA, the financial aid applica-tion for col-lege. Mayor Dan Rivera learned of the goal and offered some additional motivation.
Yesterday, the Mayor made good on his promise to give
$500 to one student if Gear Up attained their goal. He selected a name from the over 600 stu-dents who par-ticipated and the winner was Ashley Rosario, a senior from HLD. Congrat-ulations, Ashley and Thank you, Mayor Rivera for supporting
our students!

Coaches’ Corner: John Delaney, LHS Softball
Because of my passion of the sport of softball I want to pass that on to my players to teach them the game so that they have the same love of the game I do. I want to watch them grow as athletes and or individuals. For them to be accountable and responsible and discipline people on or off the field. My experience of the sport was I played in a men’s softball league when I was done playing college baseball. I have coached in the recreation town leagues and the travel A softball circuit for years. My love of this sport is because of the fast pace this game can be played and how fundamentally sound it is. Goals for my softball team to achieve this year would be by seasons end be better than we started and to achieve this would be to work as hard as they can daily and with that being competitive in every game we play to never give
up. To hopefully contend for a league title and/or a state
tourney berth.

The story of the Dolphin Club
By John Griffin and Matthew Blanchette
Cam Brien from Lawrence came to me and asked if I would help recruit students from LHS to vis-it the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine ME. He talked about how his career was so great and he wanted to pass that on to the students of Lawrence. Cam worked for me at the Greater Lawrence Com-munity Boating Program and graduated from MMA. I was introduced by email to High Porter, the Ad-missions Direc-tor from MMA. We developed a plan for taking ten students on a two day tour of the school.
Working with one of my stu-dents, Maria Romero, we formed the Dolphin Club which would allow us to meet after school with the students. I met with Michael Fiato, the Principal of Lawrence High School. I got per-mission to start the club. Maria and I made fliers and put them in my wing of the school, Health and Human Services (HSS) and Business Management and Fi-nance (BMF). Soon we had eight students and increased to about fourteen. Gradually through attrition we ended up with eight students:
Maria Romero, Cariany Tavarez, Francheska Molina, Giannina (Gia) Guillermo,Pamela Sanchez, Elvianna DeJe-sus, Johan X, and Nathaniel Garces all from Lawrence.Joining me on the trip was Matt
Blanchette, I recent hire at BMF and a long time friend.I approached some of my friends, Paul and Kathy Huard, John and Donna Sytek and Bob and Kathleen Brown, all of Salem, NH and asked each couple of $100.00. The Grif-fin’s chipped in as well. So, with $500 in the kitty I rented a van and bought snacks for the ride.
We drove to Bath ME, which is home to the Bath Iron Works that builds the Navy destroyers. We ate breakfast at the Star-light Diner and headed up Rt. 1 North through some of the prettiest coastal towns in Maine.
Upon arriving at MMA, we met Hugh Porter and Cam Brien who spoke to us over lunch about our planned itinerary. And what a trip it was going to be!
We toured classrooms in the school, including a model of a transport barge which emulates the filling of liquids on a real barge, and a planetarium which in-cluded a cool show about the constellations. We saw shops for sails, fiberglass and engine repair. It was amazing how many students were actually doing the work.
A big favorite was the piloting simulator, two of them side by side, which had a realistic wrap around screen that made you feel like you were actually driving a tug or other ship. The students all got to drive.
After a great dinner, we went to the pool for a SCUBA les-son that was also a hit with the
students. We were all exhausted and went to bed early.
On Wednesday, we had another great meal and said good bye to Hugh who had to pick up another group for a tour. Cam took us aboard the State of Maine, a training vessel that is over 300 feet long. We went all over the ship on steep ladders. At the bottom, we saw the engine, as big as a room, and felt the cold Maine
waters through the hull. Climb-ing upward we saw the living quarters, showers, mess hall, bridge and more workshops. The students from MMA were very involved everywhere we went. Our students were de-lightful, polite, enthusiastic and fun. I greatly enjoyed our time together. Not to be outdone, Cam took us aboard a former fishing vessel and the captain let our students drive the boat for about 10 minutes each. Of course we had to have another fabulous meal before we said goodbye to MMA. There were a lot of sleeping teens on the way home. I am gratified that I got involved in this trip and hope a few of the students end up at Maine Maritime.

NHS presents at State Conference; Volunteers at Earth Day
Members of the Na-tional Honor Society presented at the NHS Spring Conference held April 5th at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. The conference drew over 200 students from NHS chapters from across the state of Massachusetts. LHS presented a work-shop entitled Con-fronting Privilege to over 40 of their NHS peers, and were rec-ognized by the state Chapter for their ef-forts.
On Saturday, March 10, members of the National Honor Society joined over 1,000 other volunteers for the annual Ground Work Lawrence Comcast Cares Earth Day Clean Up event. In honor of Earth Day, volunteers cleaned parks, sidewalks, and playgrounds around the city, to make it a more livable and sustainable place for all its citizens. Other LHS students from JROTC and Robotics also par-ticipated in the event.

LANCERS AT STUDENT GOVERNMENT DAY
By Nick Beauchamp: On April 7th, Brianna Medina ’18 attend-ed the 70th annual Student Government Day program at the Statehouse in Boston. This event is designed to give stu-dents an opportunity to learn first-hand about state govern-ment by enabling students to participate in the legislative process through simulated committee hearings and House and Senate formal sessions. The event brought together almost 400 students from 195 schools across the Commonwealth. The day began with an address from Governor Char-lie Baker and key state officials from a variety of offices, including Senator John Keenan, Repre-sentative Carole Fiola, Secretary of Education James Peyser, Speak-er of the House of Representatives Rob-ert A. DeLeo, and Associate Justice Mark V. Green of the Appeals Court, among others. Stu-dents also heard from their peers, including the Student Governor from Nor-ton High School, the Student Senate President from Ralph C. Mahar Regional School, and the Student Speaker of the House from Winthrop High School. Af-ter hearing from their state offi-cials, Briana and other students delivered testimony before a legislative committee and de-
bat-ed legislation on the floor of the house and senate centered around two bills currently before state law-makers — one requiring driv-ers use hands-free cell phone devices, and another pertaining to the privacy of student data. Finally, students held hearings
and
then vot-ed on the two
bills. As a result of this program, Briana gained a new perspective on the importance of state government and civic engagement.
