Volume 1, Number 10 June 27, 2017 GFS Year in Review With the graduation celebration, yearbooks and graduation certificates delivered, and the last day of school playdate at Tucker’s Grove, the 2016-17 school year is ocially done. Whew! It’s been a great year, though a very busy one. I’m enjoying the slower pace of summer; more “wiggle room” in the mornings to get the kids moving. We’re doing some things a little dierently in August. Because the GFS all school Fall Campout is early (September 11-13), which will make the first several weeks of school really busy, we’re going to have the budget meeting for the PTA a couple of days before school begins. Never fear: there will be abundant notice of that meeting! We’re also combining set- up day with the summer barbecue. After a morning’s work getting the classrooms ready for the year, we’ll adjourn in the late afternoon to Tucker’s Grove for food and fun for the entire family. If it all works, we’ll do it again maybe; if not, we’ll try something else in 2018. A few final reminders: if you have any receipts remaining for reimbursement, please contact Rebekah Bardakos ASAP so that we can close out the year. ( Rebekah Bardakos, <[email protected]>). GFS Year in Review With the graduation celebration, yearbooks and graduation certificates delivered, and the last day of school playdate at Tucker’s Grove, the 2016-17 school year is officially done. Whew! It’s been a great year, though a very busy one. I’m enjoying the slower pace of summer; more “wiggle room” in the mornings to get the kids moving. #

We’re doing some things a little differently in August. Because the GFS all school Fall Campout is early (September 11-13), which will make the first several weeks of school really busy, we’re going to have the budget meeting for the PTA a couple of days before school begins. Never fear: there will be abundant notice of that meeting! We’re also combining set-up day with the summer barbecue. After a morning’s work getting the classrooms ready for the year, we’ll adjourn in the late afternoon to Tucker’s Grove for food and fun for the entire family. If it all works, we’ll do it again maybe; if not, we’ll try something else in 2018.#

A few final reminders: if you have any receipts remaining for reimbursement, please contact Rebekah Bardakos ASAP so that we can c lose out the year. (Rebekah Bardakos , <[email protected]>). Appreciations, cont’d…

Mark Casselman for his expert technical assistance with g r a d u a t i o n a n d f o r researching kiln options for us.

All of the sixth grade parents, for working together to make the kids’ vision for graduation come true.

Tim Burgess, for helping with graduation decoration, just because it’s fun!

William Banning, for being a fantastic superintendent for the Goleta Union School District and a tremendous advocate for GFS. One of Bill’s first acts as superintendent was to visit GFS at the Fall Campout; one of his last was attending graduation.

All of the 2017-18 Tribe Leaders: Lauré Brecher, Brian Thompson, Rosa Martinez, L e s l i e H o g a n , C h r i s t i Westerhouse, Wenda Pagliaro, Dianna Garner, Sandrine Thompson, Dina Clapinski, E r i c B a r d a k o s , C y n t h i a Anderson.

Outgoing officers Sophie Spier and Adrienne Demboski; incoming officers Katie Joiner and Mike Clapinski.

Th e Te c h Tea m : M a r k Casselman, Soeren Thust, Ted Cabeen, John Rickey.

Felicia Roggero, for being a terrific principal for GFS and Foothill.

Sometimes, when I ask for appreciations, people are afraid to do it, because of the fear of leaving someone out. It’s a real thing: any time I assemble a list, I know very well that for every parent I call out by name, there’s another one working quietly in the background—picking up trash around the school area, helping a teacher (even on a non-volunteer day), helping a child, comforting a child, playing with kids after school, reaching out to a fel low parent, cheerful ly carr ying out tribe assignments. I’m grateful for all of those acts of kindness and community, and very happy to be a part of this community. ~ Leslie

!Notes from Rebekah: We've still got a few expenditures to clear in June, including yearbooks, the UC Regents Science Camp expense, the Gaga Court contribution, and a small amount of graduation expenses.  As it stands right now, we're at 101% of our revenue budget, and 69% of our expenditure budget. Gala really knocked it out of the park, ice cream sales were great, and not having a big IT year made a difference.  On the expenditure side, the absence of the Fall Campout was significant. Once the dust settles with the June financials, it is still very realistic that the surplus we had anticipated for this year will be considerably greater than the $7,854 we budgeted. In all, we’ll be in a great position as we move into 2017-18, with the return of the Fall Campout and the possibility of capital expenses.
